What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly, keep discussion at a civil level.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

Also the artist was Naoko Takeuchi… nabbed her latest art book and really enjoyed how she threw beads and glitter on her work while making it look good!!!

Well as derided and overly exaggerated as it is now, at one point I appreciated the shape language of that style and at times it can still be fun. Thankfully I’ve got more ability than JUST that style, since I’m getting the impression that it’s not your respective cups of tea

the only reason im redlining anything is because this is already rlly good so im nitpicking details

i think the upper torso is a bit too long for her proportions, also a detail but the staff overlaps her ear creating a weird tangent so maybe u can move it a bit so it reads more clearly, otherwise this is already looking good

Westfag here
I'm going to be honest, I regret not being into anime. I realized that westoid art is holding me back. All of my favorite artists on the internet are anime inspired but I was too dumb to notice it and try to emulate instead I was using western cartoons. In short, I want to become a weeb.
Now obviously, studying and copying anime is a start, which I'm doing. However, I want to change my entire identity. I want to stop being a western cartoon autist and become an anime one.
What are some good anime series and manga to get into as a complete adult novice?
I posted in the asg thread but still

I'd recommend reading more manga than watching anime (unless you want to get better at animation too) just because it's much more reliable to copy panels than frames, which obviously vary in quality. But I don't watch much anime so I might be a little bit biased. Stuff like One Punch Man, HxH and JoJo were my entry point into anything manga related, so I'd recommend them to you too, but also just look for stuff with an artstyle you like or a plot you find interesting.

Regardless, for anime I think anything from Trigger/Gainax is super soulful and stylish. Yoh Yoshinari is awesome. Lots of 90's/early 2000's anime is super sick too; Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Akira, to name a few.

I saw this a few days ago but really wanna ask, what exactly is fully attracting you to the style? To me it seems like an act of desperation for popularity, especially with the words you're using like
> want to change my entire identity. I want to stop being a western cartoon autist and become an anime one.

I'd say not to be ashamed of your love of western toons but to find that happy and loving medium between east and west like-
>Lupin The 3rd
>Little Witch Academia
>Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt
>Trigun
What I'm trying to say is, how volumetric shapes can turn certain cartoony designs into something appealing. Look at Japanese fanart of western cartoons and really study what works.

Look at how good pixel artists pick a palette. Actually just copy one for study purposes. Lot of crossover with cel-shaded styles, less can be more, and it can be a jumping-off point to a more painterly look.

Thanks man. SAI might be worth returning to, always felt easier to paint in than CSP.
>>
>>7181164
I've actually been working on a side project to replicate SAI brushes in CSP. I've developed a very accurate SAI watercolor brush (every other one seemed a little off) that I haven't released yet and a pen brush that feels as free and lightweight as the SAI one. If I remember correctly you use a square marker brush with opacity to paint, right? If I get around to it, I'll do that one too and DM them to you if you'd like.

When it comes to improvement and fundies
How do you anons go about it?
Pic rel not mine obviously
>>
>>7183961
You don't "go about it". That shit grows inside you like a virus or disease, what I mean is that it is an organic process. You need to put yourself into an standardized daily habit to let that thing naturally grow and develop. Yes I mean, DRAWING. All the time, anytime, everyday. You will acquire the natural skill, you become what you do. It's that simple. Just do it. Start drawing. "What to draw" "What guide to use", "What tools", it's all excuses. Everything is available today. You can copy anything you want, references are at your disposal, digital free tools like Krita are free. If you have the will, you will have the prize.
>>
>>7183976
Based

I'm not that good, but right now I'm on a grinding season, what I do is chill for a year and then one month of grinding, so when the grind comes, I start by recognizing what I struggled the most with, or what was more negatively seen in my art, basically my weaknesses, and start working on those hard, when you know your enemy, you can strategize to rape them, take care

A bit of both, adding too much red on the cheek area or going way too dark and saturated with the blush on the nose.
Like you can make a lot of very expressive painting with subtle color changes, playing with edges and saturation rather than just value.

Thanks! Im not planning anything concrete here, I just saw the Miiverse buttons going trendy and thought it would be a fun exercise to replicate the original "Yeah!" button. So far it seems Im the only one who made these the closest to the Miiverse originals.
Not only I managed to get a perfectly sizable button (done with vectors in Illustrator), but I also got a bunch of other buttons done (in SAI because it's more comfortable), with possibility of opening commissions for these (I already got one today).

I feel like you need to commit to either full painterly or full colored linework. The mix you have right now with messy lines and messy painting is way too muddy and just in general not pleasing to look at. Especially with your rendering; the unblended and sloppy brush strokes are probably the first thing you should improve on. Use more hard edges, a lot of your strokes just taper off and don't convey any form.

Your anatomy is also very wonky but it could work, in a Baki-esque sorta way. I still recommend you study it more before distorting it. Either way it's the least of your problems.

If you REALLY want to stick to keeping those messy lines in, then at least try and clean them up. Go slowly and really think about the purpose of each line. JGGenesisKeys is a great example of having rough but clean lineart; it doesn't distract from the whole image but still provides an outline for the forms. Only one or two lines are used for each curve in the linework.
