I prefer this tutorial for painting color when it comes to using the "greyscale-to-color" method. The problem with the method is once the colors are applied on top of the greyscale render, the image looks dull and lifeless. So if in the beginning you decide to make your shadows a dark blue, then once the color layer is applied the image will have more life to it.
