When I was hanging out in NYC back in the late 80s,my then girlfriend introduced me to a painter who worked for a "big professional fine artist " called Mark Kostabi,or some such. His boss did a bunch of works,establishing a style,then hired these other painters to make similar works based on his quick sketches and sold them as originals of his own. Technically true,because they were done with his supervision and approval. The employees would accept the per hour rate and joked about how they would compete with each other in getting the signature rendered correctly.
