>>7307756>>7307758>>7307759>>7307762These look really cute! Of the basic programs you linked what do you actually recommend for someone to animate? I've done very few animations in the past using Gimp and Sai (with Sai Animation Assistant), so I'm looking for a game-changer. Synfig, from experience, is not going to do that. What about the others?

What is a keyframe
>>7310940A drawing which can't be an in between.Rather lemme put it like this: if a character moves from one pose to another, the key poses are the ones that guide the inbetween artist to fill in the gap.Say a ball bounces onces and comes to rest then the initial start pose, the contact with ground pose, the highest point of the bounce and resting pose are keys If we didn't draw the contact pose key or the highest point key the inbetween artist might not realise it's a bounce and add inbetween s in a straight line from initial to resting pose which will look like the ball is floatingTldr a key pose is the point at which the subject changes its direction of motion completely
>>7310940each keyframe is a new drawing in the example, the ball on the left is at 24fps, meaning it has been drawn 24 times per second, that's 24 keyframesthe one on the right is at 12fps, meaning it has 12 keyframes. the reason it's the same length as the animation on the left is because each keyframe is held for the duration of two frames. this keeps them lined up, but is noticably less smoothtypically you want to animate on twos, which means each keyframe is held for two frames, but it's good to be flexible with it
>>7311255anon you decribed frame rate and the difference between drawing on one's (24 fps) and drawing on two's (12fps)please donot confuse newfags like this every individual drawing is not a key framesfew of them are Key frames the rest are Inbetween(frame)sthere's also Breakdown frames but those are used in more complex motions/cycles

>>7314019I can't I need the credits
>>7311187It depends on who you ask, since there's actually two different sets of animation terminology being used today: Western and Japanese. Which leads to confusion with people getting definitions from one or the other mixed up.First is the Western terminology, which is where the English phrase "key animation" originates from. Traditionally in Western animation, an animation is split up into Keys, Breakdowns, and In-betweens.A Key, also known as an Extreme, is the start and end of an action.A Breakdown is any drawing besides the keys which defines the movement. An in-between is anything, well, in-between the Keys and Breakdowns. Here's another way to put it: Keys and Breakdowns are any drawings that can't be defined with a time-chart. Likewise, in-betweens are any drawings that only require a time-chart to fill-in.In the Japanese animation industry, you just have two kinds of drawings: Genga (原画) and Douga (動画). "Genga" refers to both Keys and Breakdowns. Japanese animators don't really distinguish between the two. BUT, genga is usually translated to "key animation" in English, which is where the confusion comes from.Douga, as you can probably guess, refers to in-betweens.

My personal process has them done on the same layer for the sketchy rough figuring it out as I go phase that I posted there but refined cleaned up version has them on different layers.>do the specific colored line have different meaning? For me red means highlight, blue shadow. green and purple a change in colour not related to lighting (for example his facial scars will be a different shade from his skin tone). JP studios might not use the exact same colours every time but have a similar idea, blue and red being used for shade and highlight is very common.>anyone here got a explanation/guide i could reference?Dong Chang and Tonari Animation youtube channels have videos and streams with comprehensive explanations and demonstrations of JP animation methods in English.https://www.youtube.com/@TonariAnimation/streamshttps://www.youtube.com/@DongChang/videos

>>7325285start with the basics to get a feel of the principles and how to apply them you don't have to linger on it though just do them then start trying to consciously apply them in your personal stuff
>>7325304Thanks anon, that's probably the best way to start
working on this
>>7325417Unless the camera is looking up at her, why does she shrinks when she jumps into the air?Did the jumping up images get zoomed out or did you intend for it to be that way? Also add a slight overshoot and settle to the extreme poses of the cheering cycle it feels a bit stiffAlso consider using a smear frame for the inbetween of the cheering cycleThe key drawing themselves are nicely proportioned well done
>>7325473thanks a lot for the help, anon! the shrink was a mistake, i hadnt intended that.the overshoot frame definitely helped!
>>7326219it was a ballsy decision to pick an assymetric costume it's a pain in the ass to do right even for seasoned animatorsyou did well keeping it as consistent as you did, good job : DThe chin was too sharp, the overlaping strokes made the tip look extra pointy, so i rounded it out a bit on most framesThe overshoot i felt didn't go far enough so i added another overshoot frame and two in-betweens to smooth it over, also added slight secondary motion to the boobsThe trick with overshoot is to draw what you feel is appropriate and then exaggerate it a bit moreIt might look off initially but it works out in motionThe air time frames felt stiff so i added an inbetween there tooAlso i changed the exposure for some frames, held the static grounded poses for 3's and the smear/overshoot frames for 2's, and some of the air time frames for 4'sWas this an animation study or did you make it yourself?
thoughts?
>>7327143woah, thanks a lot for doing those corrections!!i especially see what you mean with the overshoots now.it's really clear how much more i could've done i still feel like i got a lot to learn in regards to proper animation timing.the design is from a vtuber but the movements were all from imagination.
I was gonna make enid more present but rendering couldn't handle it.

Hello!I am looking for free alternatives to Live2d and Spine2d.I have heard that you can get a similar functionality out of Blender(!?) of all things. Is it true? Something about called Blender Grease pencil or something like that. The problem I see is that the vids I saw showed people drawing their images from start over there. And I was looking more into functionality where I could import my image from photoshop or Clip studio and then attach bones(?) to it and animate it.In general, what I want to do for starters is to learn how can I make something as simple as chest expanding and shrinking on inhale/exhale.
>>7330598i remember there being a free chinese knockoff of spine called dragonbones, but haven't checked on it in a few years. there was an addon for blender a long time ago called coatools, but i think it was abandoned years ago.ieira used blender for those masterpiece gifs. he made a tutorial video back in the day, might still be out there somewhere. iirc he imported a layered painting onto alpha textured planes, then cut up the planes with the knife tool and animated those meshes with shape keys.grease pencil can be animated with bones, but the rigging is total shit because you can't use an intermediary mesh. it might get better in the (distant) future after the refactor in blender 4.3, but don't hold your breath because blender devs are retarded.you should just pirate live2d or moho desu senpai
>>7330598I'll preface this by saying I'm a /beg/ who wants to do mesh deform animation in the future, but hasn't done much yet.Blender can definitely be used for this, even without grease pencil. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChqSqDGCTRA where he exports from Krita. There was also a /3/ anon that used Maya to do something similar without access to the original psd/layers https://warosu.org/3/thread/987398Like >>7331861 said dragonbones is free, but it's bug ware and end of life so I haven't tried it.AnimeEffects is another choice. It's free but incredibly bare bones. It doesn't have support for elongating bones or making calculations between bones. However, if you just want to play around without learning blender's UI it's fun.
>>7330598inochi creator, dragonbones is dead but there's a functional build out there. Opentoonz has a plastic tool and you can do something similar but a little bit more cumbersome.

>>7332284nice>Do you guys have any tips?theres no windup for his kick and there's no shift in his body either
>>7335493Oh yeah I know where it's from. It's from the final day, I remember it. Just was saying it was a very kino moment to animate. Incredibly cinematic. It played out like a scripted drama.
>>7336401anotha' onecaptcha:KHAYM
>>7328937I like the vibes. Could be the setting for a cajun horror story.
>>7332284Your timing is bad. You need to learn what frames you can omit. Think about it. Let's say you had a camera that takes 12 pictures a second. If you press that button when an F1 car is racing past you, it'll most likely only get a couple frames worth. Conversely, someone walking past you will be in every frame. With the concept of timing you keep this principle in mind. If you want your punches to be snappy and more impactful, your beginning and end will be the longest parts of the animation, the punch itself will only be a couple frames long. Since you drew every frame here, the punch looks like it's in slow motion.
>>7336858The beginning and end of your actions are also known as keyframes. You establish those, and then depending on what the action is, you create your tweens keeping timing in mind.
>>7335511I got lazy on the body shift but I’ll keep this in mind>>7336858>>7336859Thank you! I went back and messed around with showinf fewer frames in the middle and it looks closer to the snappy effect you spoke of.
>>7336401>>7336432nice pretty cool
>>7332284Practice the bouncing ball and then flour sack first. Look up those animation exercises before attempting anything else.
>>7336432>>7336401these are excellent, really economical and clever with with whats moving. reminds me of pro storyboards/animatics ive seen

i added a couple frames and color
Used some 3d models and some various Blender tricks to hide the fact they were 3d (outside the background). Still not quite sold on this workflow. I feel like my drawings would have looked a lot better, but certain aspects of the workload were quite a bit easier.
>>7354160Well, I should say that it's a hybrid style that used 2d and 3d animation. Maybe it would work better for more than a 1 off test animation as you'd be able to reuse character assets for consistency.
>had no idea what to study now because not sure whether I should grind with pencil&paper for urban sketching stuff or just keep going with digital illustrations>decided to animate something on a whim because I kinda liked doing it last time>get thisI think I'm getting close to finding my art calling.

>>7347832this inspired me i wanted to do my own version
hehe, titties
also made this to visualise framerates and practice the ol' walkcycle
>>7358150I could watch this forever. amazing work anon.
>>735835712 looks good and i think it can look smoother with better interpolation.
>>7358542Blessu>>7358591Actually you reminded me why I wanted to make this in the first place, seen too many lazy ass framerate "comparisons" that don't actually show how to work with lower framerates and just cut frames out of the 24fps example.
So I got to ask, what's all your end goals here? Get a job animating? Make your own films? Where do you see yourself in the future as an artist?>>7309503I don't, but krita is pretty easy and free, download, go to settings, check the docker tab, put up the animation timeliness and onion skin dockers and just experiment. I have no formal training>>7358104I loved your work on /b/ glad to see you finished it up.>>7358150Holy shit, this is incredible how much time did it take>>7358357This is amazing, I want to do a walk cycle animation for some characters I've come up with. Really play around with them. Have any tips?
>>7359215When eyes open, get rid of all but the second in-between frame, and add an overshoot frame. I think that will look a lot snappier.
>>7359260Will do, in the meantime here's more garbage
>>7359215Danke, hard to tell because I started it ages back and only just got around to polishing but I reckon about 10 hours all up, most of which was cleaning up the lines. For walk cycles there's this handy diagram that I worked from. Tough/aggressive characters tend to have more bounce/swing in their head and shoulders and less in their hips, while austere/civilised characters have the opposite, and don't forget to swing the shoulders and hips (and by extension arms and legs) in opposite directions. Other than that it's just keyframes and tweens as usual. If you get stuck on a particular body part walk around acting like your character to get a feel for it.>>7359264Hahahaa this dude rocks
just doing the basics
>>7359302Love it.On the ground hit you may want to add a bit more squish and maybe 1 or 2 more frames just to feel that bag "compressing" on the floor for a moment. Still, the swing itself is very pleasing to the eye
>>7307756Is it sensible to get into animation only after I get very confidently good at illustrations? I'm equally passionate about both. It's just that I heard getting into animation also helps with becoming a great illustrator, so the order is a bit confusing.
>>7359555>illustration...or do you mean Drawing?Illustration and drawing ain't the same thing. An illustration is a "FINAL" visual product. That's its only function. So an illustrator can take advantage of any shortcut, resource or tool available to get that "one of" image. What I mean is that he could know jack shit about anatomy or perspective, and he could use all the right references and tools to pull it off. Illustrators are in charge of the backgrounds in example.A draughtsman on the other hand, just draws, he doesn't loose time polishing images, coloring or "rendering", he knows exactly how things works, perspective, anatomy, volume, movement, etc. He KNOWS these fundamentals, he doesn't need too much reference to get the thing right quickly. He's suited to do animation, he will be in charge of the key frames.
>>7359574>An illustration is a "FINAL" visual product. That's its only function. So an illustrator can take advantage of any shortcut, resource or tool available to get that "one of" image.>A draughtsman on the other hand, just draws, he doesn't loose time polishing images, coloring or "rendering", he knows exactly how things works, perspective, anatomy, volume, movement, etcI meant both of these.
>>7359302the ol spider man pillowvery well done anon>>7359342>animated perspective shiftpeaksome feedback i'd give is commit more frames to the mid-air turn around to pace the motion better it is the money shot of the sceneAlso zoom further into the character and make her like 90% of the screen for the turn around atleast thats how anime usually do it cuz animated backgrounds are a pain in the ass to do rightgood job was fun tinkering with you doodle>>7359555if you need the go ahead from a buncha anon's online you've already failedjokes asides yes being good at illustrating will definitely helpbut these things aren't mutually exclusive doing 2d animation definitely accelerates your illustration gains
>>7359555The core skill you need for good character animation is gesture, but that's the easiest to train, just do lots of gesture studies and draw from your shoulder. Check out Quickposes if you haven't already. Construction also helps a ton for keeping your forms consistent, since you want to plan out your animations' movements with balls and boxes. You don't necessarily have to "gitgud" at either, but getting the general hang of them will make your animation process go a lot smoother

>>7361805You could do the anime thing where most of it is highly limited but with a few key moments of high effort animation.

Are there any good blogs or books that get into cheats for animation. An example being how a character can start talking and you may only animate them beginning the sentence then switch to the other characters face to save yourself the whole animated sentence
>>7332931>>7362146These kick ass, is this for a music video?>>7362210Things like that you pick up through experience, annoying answer I know. Analysing any decently animated tv/web series should get you the answers you need, and like you said animating "outside of the frame" is a good shortcut and most techniques like that are self-evident. That said I'm also interested if some industry cartoonist has put up a blog on shortcuts they use.One thing that comes to mind is how Miyazaki used low framerates with good gesture earlier in his career https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SANfYqmNz6U
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/610646598/nafca-animation-industry-book-2025?lang=itThoughts on this?

anyone here with decent knowledge of toon boom? I accidentally deleted the default brush preset and I can't seem to get it back. Resetting all presets doesn't seem to help nor does importing brush presets even though I can see that the old brushes that were deleted are there
>>7354160Man, I'm really not sure about this method. I keep going back and forth on its usefulness. Like, those were some quick made models and look kind goofy, but it is nice to not have to worry about perspective or keeping the proportions between frames consistent, still, I feel like it may be counterproductive and lose some life where you can just draw it right. I also wonder if the models won't make it a bit boring and also make you rusty as instead for drawing every frame you are more or less just working as a cleanup artist. Man I'm conflicted.
cleaned up and colored some fan art i did a couple months agomost of the animation is referenced from code geass' op. the part where her head key spins and the part where she plays the violin were from imagination

>>7368512>Was gonna say can't you just make a new brush with the same settings as default?I guess, it was the default erase that I accidentally deleted I'm not sure if it would've been that simple>>7368541I do it but only because I'm required to for my classes but I absolutely hate it. >if so does it feel limiting to you?It does a lot and I don't think the end product is worth it either but I can see its uses for certain stuff>what do you guys think about tweening/rigging/puppet animation?I think it's absolutely souless and looks like shit when moving but people who really know the ins and out of it can do some amazing stuff. Like final space I think that show uses puppet animation and it looks and moves gorgeously but you do still see the limitations of this kind of animation in it at times. I don't think anyone who enjoys animating for the drawing process of it really likes it but it appeals to a certain type of guys that end up dictating industry standard so here we are.
>>7368541every few months something like this https://youtu.be/G2peEBC8svE pops up in my feed and makes me want to give it another shot, but i just end up uninstalling again because the drawing tools are shit and i'm too lazy to use multiple programs
Hello anons. I started drawing yesterday, and I was wondering at what point should I start to animate?
>>7370548Immediately?Animation is it's own skill that can be applied with drawing but is not exclusive to it.You can apply most animation principles to 3D models (or even actual models if you want to do stop motion) or crude drawings. If you want to animate disney or anime style characters you're going to have to learn your drawing fundies, but there theoretically isn't anything wrong with learning and applying animation principles before you're skilled at that.My answer would be you can start 2d animation when you can repeatably draw something consistently.
>>7370558adding on to what this anon said practicing animation when you're starting out can unironically lead to you developing and understanding fundies much faster than usual
>>7370595>>7370558Thanks, anons. I was thinking that being able to consistently draw a human figure was a good benchmark to get to. It would give me an interesting thing to animate, which would keep me more invested in it. Good plan?

Hey does anyone have clips of animated shaking/rustling bushes?Having trouble thinking about how i should go about it and google isn't helping me much.
>>7371488hey thanks a lot again man, yeah i usually post to my twitter @linkoh9.ah i think i still need a couple months of practice before i start messaging people like Kay Yu haha. i've been studying marine's MVs lately since theyre so high quality and i feel like i'm learning a lot
>>7372886No problem, holoanon. Your stuff is good and you're making visible progress, this marine study is looking really nice. Sorry I can't give critique, just don't know much bout animation. As far as animating for someone else, I still think you should give something like that a try. As I said there's a bunch of clippers out there and I bet you could message some big clipper and see if they would be willing to upload one of your animations onto their channel to gain some recognition, seeing as probably 80% of English hololive fans are clip watchers, it would probably expose you to more crowds. As for Kay Yu... yeah he's definitely on another level, but maybe you could do inbetweens or something like that? I have no idea if he is open to stuff like that or how you would get in contact with him, but I bet you could learn some stuff from that.
