How do I know if I simply LIKE the idea of being an artist but not the actual process behind it? I don’t want to be a whiny howie permabeg, but for the last few months, all I’ve been able to think about is drawing.

Yet when I actually want to draw, I have zero ideas and just give up. It feels like a vicious cycle of pain. Yes, i have adhd but i don't think that affects me at all or my thinking

Take as much time as you need as long as you learn it. Remember, once you truly learn/master/understand something once, you won't need to learn it again. That's what will save up time in the future.

>How do I know if I simply LIKE the idea of being an artist but not the actual process behind it?

If you're not creating but talking as if you are. Starting a sentence saying
>as an artist
Lastly, you don't. That little cognitive dissonance can only go away when you have undeniable proof that you are and artist. Make sure you're in the arena. If it feels vague that's your mind telling you that you need to work. You don't have to ENJOY the process, more be willing to suffer the pain to get the results you want.

how to accept commission payment without risking my personal life on the line (or at least lessen the impact) as in

I don't want to get cancelled for my (horny bdsm) art commission that will haunt me 20-30 years later just because I said something contrarian to the norm of that particular time and space in the future. currently I'm living a double life that's a total opposite sides.

Any of you anons draw erotic art to sublimate your sexual fantasies? Does it actually work? I was a regular for a couple years, so I got the fundamentals to make something decent, but the way I see it, it could go one of two ways: either it integrates my sex drive in a way where I don't have to just kill it and live like a hermit as I've been doing for a couple months, or it just makes me terminally horny. Don't want to deal with the second option.

>>
>>7323826
It depends on how you go about it. You run the risk of combining your art drive and your sex drive in a way that’s almost like a drug. You could end up drawing a lot just to get a “quick fix” and not to actually improve. For me, it “cured” me in the long run, but I had to deal with a lot of internal conflict in the first few months to a year when it made me horny 24/7. If you don’t want to deal with that, then it’s just better not to start in my opinion. It feels like a huge waste of time even if you end up with a lot of art.

if you're using multiple references trying to draw a specific character, do the references have to be as close to the same angle as possible?

like if I had a face ref I wanted to use and a hair ref I also wanted to use but the problem was the hair ref is at an angle that doesn't translate well to the perspective of the face I wanna use, what should I do? try to make it fit and guess as best as I can how it would look or should I find a different reference that fits as close as possible?

Is animation literally just drawing the same drawing slightly differently 30 times like a flip note to make it work? I’ve never done it before.

In theory, if I wanted to animate a girl smoking, I would just draw the first image, then draw her hand and mouth moving and the cigarette getting redder and brighter at the end, then make another 5 where her hand is moving away and the cig lightens and she blows out smoke?

I'm trying to identify a "how-to-draw-comics" book with a specific subsection.
It explains how to depict impact in fight scene, over a few pages. Not just 'character A touching character B', but how to best depict both the force in the strike, and the effect on the target. Two characters, one punching another with different relative amounts of force, were depicted. One scene near the end - used to indicate super strength - involved the striker throwing a gentle blow that knocked the target away.
I'm tempted to say it was created by Marvel or DC.
Can anyone figure out what book I'm trying to recall?

Forms, like anon said. And light/shadow. Set up some kind of reference for lighting and poses, even if its digital mannequins. Learn to draw simple forms in perspective.

Read Alphonso Dunn's pen and ink book, and do the exercises from the companion book, it will teach you line control amd good techniques.

Screengrab a page of a manga, turn the opacity down, and just start inking it to learn from it. Youll have to pay attention to what theyre doing with light and shadow, heavy and light objects, forms compressing against each other, etc. I think theres an old infographic from tealguy that explained line weight well but I don't have it anymore.

Yes, also you get more tactile and visual feedback (with no delay) when you're handling a physical pen/pencil. More direct control, less guesswork about how the digital brush will respond, so you can focus on anatomy/whatever rather than micromanaging your brushstrokes.

Does drawing from the shoulder actually matter if you're doing digital? I have a Samsung Galaxy S8 and while the screen is large, I feel I get more mileage just using my wrist/elbow.

Is drawing "small" (taking up maybe ~2000 pixels of space per figure) really that bad? I've had people tell me I should aim to take up more space, but whenever I draw "small" my stuff looks way better and is easier to do.

Serious answer:
There are different levels of organization to animation based on the scope of the project. Meaning what kind of movement you are doing, the length of it, how polished you want it, and so on.

Flipbook-style animation like you described is fine for practice and making short reverse-loops. Longer things require you plan out some thumbnails and use keyframes, then draw the in-betweens. Even more complex? Plan out a storyboard. If it gets long, like several minutes then you need to break out time sheets and so on.

Think about it:
A single animation at 24 FPS has usually got 1 drawing from every 2 to 6 frames. This means 12-4 drawings per second of animation. 2 minutes is 480 animated frames at minimum (you save a LOT by reusing frames, such as in still shots or looping mouth movements.)

Keeping track of 480 pictures purely in your head, or doing it in one shot, is not something even savants can do. Plans and records help immensely with organizing such things.

Picking the color gives the hex code #2649fd , or the RGB code 38, 73, 253
Entering that into encycolorpedia: https://encycolorpedia.com/2649fd

Returns a very close color in Games Workshop's Soulstone Blue.
That's not really a usable color since it's made for translucent gemstone effects.

A bit more research messing with various paint mixing sites to try to match this hex code made me think that this blue is likely outside the normal color space for trad art. And looking at a color space chart showed this is probably the case.

You may be able to get it with a fluorescent blue, or by mixing a fluorescent blue with either of your guesses, but you won't get the exact match due to it being an eyebleedingly bright color.

Is it over? This is the first thing I ever tried to animate and just winged it off imagination and my visualization of a simple combo but was surprised by how long it took (like 30 minutes of dicking around) for just this. I know the hop on the switch kick needs to be fixed and improved but I might do that later.
>>
>>7330122
anon you need to go look at animation stuff and see how they do keyframes. all the inbetween motions should come later. and yeah animating takes a long time. even for professionals it takes a long fucking time, that's why animations are simplified with less shading and why movies have better animation than TV, because there's more budget

animation is time consuming as all hell especially when you are going at it with no experience
most animation courses start you with basic exercises such as different bouncing balls (up and down, moving, bouncing around the screen, etc) and then move up to walk cycles that start simple and get increasing complex + more detailed.

What you did, considering you had 0 experience and still cranked it out in 30 minutes, was pretty good all things considered.

Honestly, you should get a cheap tattoo gun set, gloves, and some lining and shading needles, then practice on fake skin (expensive), pig skin from the butcher (realistic and cheaper but gross), or fruit with fleshy rind like oranges and grapefruit (sounds weird but great practice, dont eat it after though).

You need to go deep enough that the ink is deposited past the epidermis into the dermis but not so deep that it gets into the fat - which doesnt hold ink, and not to mention you would hurt and scar the shit out of a real person. Definitely practice this on some pig skin to get a good feel for it, theres a certain way it looks/feels for the needles to pierce at the right angle and depth. Lines will look clear, not blown out or blurred, and not like small dots. The tattoo gun only goes back and forth in a straight line or in small oval motions, dont go side to side. Idk how to really explain this but you can look on youtube at tattoo courses.

You'll want to also learn how to use the transfer sheet and practice letters and numbers, not just drawing. Get in the habit of keeping a hygenic workspace, cover your tattoo gun in the plastic sheath, and use a small disposable cup/lid for your ink instead of, god forbid, dipping straight into your bottle and contaminating it.

Ink and certain watercolors look closest to a tattoo if you're trying to design them. Cant remember the brand right now, but theres a specific one thats really good for it.

I don't think anything but a tattoo gun feels like a tattoo gun, so I don't really know what to suggest to you other than that. Rotary style pens are easy for beginners and you can get a decent cheap one on amazon, some come with a beginners kit - I wouldnt ever go using any of these on people, only on practice material. If even that is too expensive for you, I guess you can get lining needles and practice stick and poke style? I dont recommend that but its better than having zero needle experience.

>>
>>7330945
Most printers can't handle watercolor paper at all because they top out at letter/a4 size. Even with that I'm pretty sure the texture of watercolor paper makes it useless for laser due to it needing to be pressed against a roller. You might damage the fuser or something from excess toner.

Best bet for transferring digital to watercolor is laser printing it reversed onto a normal sheet of paper, laying it face-down on the wc paper, and then using a colorless blender marker to force the toner onto the watercolor. You could also try printing it straight, rubbing the backside with chalk, and then carefully tracing the lines with a stylus.

Is hatching worth it as a shading technique? Is just so time-consuming compared to other methods. I feel like it would be best to only use hatching in specific scenes.

Thank you for the guidance anons, I took a look at some tutorials and learned a bit about key frames and drawing the most important poses to save time. I don’t know if I’ll go anywhere with it in the future but animation seems kind of neat and an easy way to draw more even if it is often the same thing over and over.

I polished my shit a little more as well, maybe like an hour or so spent on it.

How quickly can I get the ability to draw at the level of pic related starting from nothing?
>>
>>7331407
Maybe 2 extremely intensive and soul crushing years.
4 or 5 if you consistently work hard and give yourself weekends to rest.
>>
>>7331489
damn what about if I have a 9-5 job and only draw for an hour or two each day
>>
>>7331490
Then I guess you need to make the practice you can do focused. You might make slower progress, but that's okay. Brent Eviston's book is a good starting point for learning how to draw. Also if theres theres nothing stopping you from drawing when you're bored at work or sitting on the bus or something, that can be a good time to get some practice in.

So how do you start digital painting?

I can draw with graphite and pens realistically but I dropped out of school right before we were gonna learn to paint. Ive heard people say stuff like "just look at colors and shapes" but I still dont get it, whats the process? How do I make expressive brush strokes? How to paint?

Could someone explain phone styluses for me?
I have a normal, newish mid motorola phone and I can't figure out to save my life if there are cheap styluses with pressure sensitivity.
Ordered a CiSiRUN a moment ago and now I'm finding out pressure sensitivity might not be even achievable on my phone and that I could just buy an unpowered stylus. Might still keep it in case there will an actual opportunity to use it properly, but damn I'm miffed.
>>
>>7333008
Its just not compatible. If you dont have the motorola with a stylus your phone just isnt capable of it. You can use something like the sonarpen, thats probably your best bet for pressure sensitivity.

Yeah, too pricy to casually carry in the pocket. At least I know I will have to buy a proper tablet if I want to draw seriously digitally outside. Thanks!

Work a lot on construction of basic forms so you can get good at placing them in 3d space to establish what you’re imagining. Drawing from life also helps because it’s easier to mentally recall something that you drew in the real world vs a picture imo

so the external oblique is what dictates whether or not a guy has a more triangular shape or a rectangle one, right? that and the lats/traps
>>
>>7338846
I was gonna get angry, but then I realized what thread this is. Of course you're going to get bored. You think excitement to create thing is supposed to last for hours and days on end? I don't agree with a lot of what sam hyde says but the best advice he gave was "You get to be creative for 15 minutes coming up with the idea, the rest is work" A lot of comedy animators and I guess people who create sketches in general have to deal with this because yeah what you're creating would be funny, but it's not going to be as funny to you if it takes months to create. The same thing goes for drawing, you get your drawing down with energy and enthusiasm, try to keep that energy as you pile fundamentals to make it look solid, maybe ask someone else if it still has that energy because you've been looking at it for hours and you're desensitized to it. Sometimes the idea you're excited about and spend hours on can be a complete dud when you look at it next day though, that's why seeing what other people think matters.
>>
>>7339024
No. Its going to be muscle and fat distribution. More bulk on the upper torso = triangle shape

Pic on the left at least looks somewhat real, right is awfully skinny like theyve cut his obliques off.
>>
>>7339024
Having been in the body building area, when building your contour, if you're like me and have shit obliques you have to work up your side delts to get that triangle illusion (and quads to make your obliques look smaller) In terms of drawing just draw a triangle as a gesture then add your muscle. A thin waist does contribute to it but as the other anon said it's more upper torso work.

Hahahahahaha No. That 10,000 hrs thing is a meme, of course you're going to get somewhere doing something for 10,000 hours. The best way to see progress is to have a curriculum, set standards and benchmarks, look at the most terrible person who's doing what you're doing with actual results and make that your goal, then find the second next person and keep going.

does anyone have RETARD, perma/beg/ proof guides to heads, hands, and perspective? not loomis. give me stuff you'd give dummies. i'm realizing a lot of what i want to draw can't really be achieved with anime/cartoon faces (nosebleeds and ugly characters for example)
>>
>>7343059
Sorry to say Loomis /is/ the retard permabeg-proof guides to heads. Generally people turn their nose up because they think it's too limited, but once you know all the landmarks the Loomis head can easily translate to any type of head you're looking to draw, even anime heads and creature designs. Learn the Loomis head but develop it with life/artist studies.
Bridgeman is good for hands, understanding the construction of a hand (Loomis again) is important but Bridgeman's gesture will make your hands look good. Also, again, life/artist studies.
Perspective is much easier, just make sure things further from the camera are smaller/closer together and you're set. Perspective can also be "good enough" because IRL ground is never truly flat and environments aren't laid on grids. Watch some Kim Jung Gi drawing sessions to pick up how he does intuitive perspective. Moving around basic cubes in Blender is also a good way of planning out a perspective-heavy composition.

You shouldn't specialize too much early on. The most important part is how the head, rib-cage and pelvis all relate to each other and how the spine connects them all. This is a lot to take in so we start with simplified versions. Boxy, round and more complex forms all have their uses, so you practice all of them to learn the pros and cons of each approach.

P.S is 1 hour a day too little time to make any meaningful progress? i don't mind time commitments at all- i just need a solid roadmap to make sure that i don't spend all my time on useless things that i could've moved past long ago.

few years ago the answer was if you want to see it you need to make it. ai took over now. art made by people is a tasteful subgenre now. it’s like trying to figure out if you like the sound of someone playing your favorite instrument or if you enjoy playing it yourself. you might like both. don’t be a perfectionist with art. you’re not going to get hurt if you fuck it up. drawing is not like fucking a girl without a condom hoping she won’t get pregnant.. it’s a hobby and a way to enter a flow state. try pomodoro or something idk. get a sketchbook, a physical one from the store and fill it out in 1-3 months. evaluate its importance to your life then

Usually you want a 'pencil' type brush for sketching. One with opacity and/or flow controlled by pen pressure so you can sketch lightly and slowly build up darker lines. The shape of the brush tip and texture is up to your personal preference and desired result.
