I know I already asked this in the last thread but I’m not gonna be able to sleep until I get an answer on this.
Is this sloppy? I specifically parts like the helmet or cuff not lining up. Does anyone think it’s in need of significant improvement like going back and making sure my perspective isn’t shit?

Does anyone have any advice for drawing Trunk's hair, or just similar hair in general?Trying to draw "anime-esque" hair that doesn't look super greasy or like helmets.

I think something that'll help you feel more confident is using an ellipse tool to find how the helmet and cuffs would line up.

Going off of the boot cuffs and the smaller head sketches, it looks like you're relying on 3/4's view and other "stock" angles. Using the ellipse would help find where certain landmarks should land and make it easier to build off of them. For example, the top left drawing looks like he should be facing the floor, but because it's more-so 3/4 view, he looks like he's leaning to the side. Using ellipses and maybe even your own head in a mirror as reference you can start to feel out where the nose, chin, brow, etc should go.

Asking this again because I never got a response before. I've been following some Vilppu lectures and I feel I focus too much on copying what he's doing and getting it "right" instead of understanding the actual technique and mindset he goes into it with. Is it better to just sit and watch those videos, or are you expected to follow along as he draws?

I definitely don't die intentionally to draw anon. I would never.
You really think I'd die early in the match? Just so I could sketch or work on figures?
The very idea.
>>
>>7334280
The problem is that I need to be in the drawing headspace entirely and I can't do that with the game running even if I'm sitting it out dead.
>>
>>7334267
I just throw my head against the paper and occasionally read guides.
Should I watch lectures?
>>

>>
>>7334285
Depends on the kind of learner you are. I watch lectures because I learn best when someone is speaking and illustrating (heh) the process in real time. I started with the Drawing Manual, but it didn't really work that well for me.
>>7334269
Yeah, I'm just gonna go all the way back to chapter 1 and start with gestures again. It doesn't help that I'm incredibly inconsistent with my drawing. I'll go weeks at a time without drawing because it's not something I'm always in the mood for :/
>>
>>7334284
That's probably better. I'm always splitting focus. I just like to talk to my friends. My work is solitary and long so talking to someone after 12 hours alone is hard to resist.

Kinda want to draw but i'm tired and it's pretty late.
I've been skipping out on it for over two weeks now, though.
>>
>>7334311
follow the 5 minute rule: say you're gonna do something for 5 minutes, if you don't want to do it after 5 minutes, then stop, at least you did 5 as opposed to 0; otherwise keep going. also think about yourself a month from now: are you gonna wanna go another few weeks having drawn nothing? deal with the immediate uncomfortability and you will be happier for it.
>>
>>7334232
Think about what you want your character to be doing, do you want them running, jumping, punching, shooting eyebeams etc. Then either look for ref that would fit that action or try doing a quick gesture/mannequin and then look for ref to improve it.

I'm going for a bit of an angular/cartoony style though. I deliberately make it kind of harsh and angular, I want to make my drawings more stylised in the end but I kept this Lynch relatively photorealistic

I dunno I don't want to close myself to criticism though, but I'm just saying I'm deliberately going for a somewhat angular and stylised look. Or do you think that is something I shouldn't be doing?

Just push the values more? Like, if you have a separate layer for shadows right now, duplicate it. At the very least that’ll make the shadows deeper.

issue is that the shadows are all blurry on the face, mostly. I dunno if there is a better way to shade skin in general

No, that's not a turd at all, but the "polishing" part ain't working. The drawing, lineart and composition are amazing, pro level, I would even say. But the rendering part, may need a whole new approach. The way you do the clothing rendering is not working. The wrinkles look out of place, like the drawing is amazing but the wrinkles are all wonky and weird. It's hard to explain. Rendering elegant drapery can be tricky, you may be fooled by thinking that "more is more", when actually "lees is more" in this case. Less wrinkles, less complexity in the lines and values. You will have to find what works by trying.

you did great anon! the palette on the dragon looks so nice, maybe the photo is but i find the colors dull even though the background and foreground are complementary they are hard to read, also the human gets lost having a similar color to the background. Things you can improve in your next work, 1 tonal composition 2 color vibrancy.

Apart from strict improvement of penmanship and skill, you should study what you actually find attractive about art you enjoy. Go grab art from artists you like, and figure out what specific themes run through each picture.

I didn't notice for a while that all my favourite gooner stuff had a lot of things like speed lines, onomatopoeia, and small fx that made it seems more in action. Maybe that won't fit the style you want to make, but you should analyze critically so that you can consciously choose what to use.

For followers, really your first 100-1000 are pure luck. You can post good shit every day for weeks and nothing will happen, and then one retweet will rocket you to 1000 followers

When I started I would copy everything, now with more mileage a I would suggest to do all these steps in a single drawing, make your marks lightly at first and build on them, see how some marks are strong at first but then get lighter and lighter, this is because 1. your hand is rubbing the paper as you continue to draw 2. he is erasing some parts lightly as he progresses the drawing.

the eyes are too low, the bottom of her eyes are lower than her earlobes, it looks off.
ur right about how her right eye should be smaller, but i think there should also be a sliver of her right cheek/face showing there since her face is tilted closer to a front angle than a 3/4th one.
youre on the right track with the hand, however you need to add in some lineart and/or shading to show the knuckles, especially with the pose having her hand somewhat gripping her arm, the knuckles would be prominent. always try to use references.
some other things that stuck out to me and arent really objective faults is her hair around her ear, i think it'd come down slightly further down, even for females. also her mouth should be ever so slightly higher and her nose ever so slightly lower, although thats more a stylistic choice.

Stop screwing around like a complete moron. Working is hard and stressful and it can be miserable, but it's better than making the life of your mother worse because you are too much of a pussy to face the facts. Stop lying to yourself and get a fucking job. Stop rationalizing, stop hoping and stop coping. Get a retail job, a construction job, any damn job. Stop being a leech, stop trying others patience. At this pace you will be a fucking failure anyway, so the least you can do is get out of the house and earn your own keep.

Yeah I kind of cocked up the perspective and proportions. I mainly drew this to focus on the hair so I guess that's why I didn't pay that much attention to it but it's still a big cock-up.

I feel like I tend to leave out too many details when I draw women, but I'm afraid I'll make them look old or masculine when I give them a lot of detail. I can't just draw every line like I do when I draw old men, but then I guess I take that too far and end up not drawing enough lines. I guess I need to experiment a bit more. Does Gesture Drawing ever just "click", or am I missing something fundamental?

Face studies and learning to draw portraits are easy to learn as you go, because there are countless tutorials on every tiny detail and facial feature, but gesture drawing tutorials always boil down to "start with a gesture curve and just do it"
So how am I supposed to improve if I'm not learning new techniques? Is muscle memory all it takes, and I'll eventually just get the hang of it?

>Does Gesture Drawing ever just "click", or am I missing something fundamental?

Yes and no, the thing about gesture is that it gets easier the more anatomy you understand, if you start fresh with no knowledge you will draw what you see (at best), which most of the time is deceiving because what you see is skin and fat and you can't understand what those subtle changes in value in the skin represent. The more anatomy you know, the more you will begin to understand, "oh that C curve represents the glutteus", those overlapping lines ring true because that is how those muscles and tendons overlap right there.

What I would suggest is to have an ecorché and skeleton reference at hand and refer to them as you draw, don't spend too much time overanalyzing everything, just if you're struggling in one area, take a look and see what's under the skin over there, over time you can get more specific. Or at least thats what I'm doing at the moment and think I'm getting better as a result.
>>
>>7335599
In that case i'd probably take the other anon's advice and just aim for freelance work.

>Is handwriting an indicator or artistic quality and if yes do you have any advice on how to get better?

I don't think it affects your overall craftsmanship, but I do think it affects the expressiveness, the symbols, and the workflow. For example, I can see how Charles Schulz's linework is heavily influenced by cursive script, the hands, the hair, the motion blur, everything has a cursive quality to it. I think the same thing happens in other writing systems where you have to be more precise about subtleties.

>>
>>7335652
Handwriting is a routine task that your consciousness outsources to muscle memory. Maybe by "shaking up" your handwriting i.e. adding complexity like precision or flourishes you can encourage neuroplasticity and strengenthen or form other pathways beneficial to drawing. I started doing a little calligraphy on a whim a few months ago which degenerated into long handwriting improvement sessions where I developed a sort of spencerian cursive/copperplate hybrid with flourishes on certain letters that I like. It made me realize the only difference between me and someone who can draw is that the drawer just did a lot of drawing when I was busy not drawing. So I came here and yeah I think the calligraphy and drawing pathways are intertwining. I'm vaping so don't take this too seriouslty. But to improve your handwriting just practice writing huge and slow and precise. Make every letter accurately like drawing a picture then when you speed up and write smaller your sloppy cursive is a lot better. Theres a penmanship youtuber that recommends writing with your left hand but that's too extreme for me.

Nice face, shadow shapes can be used better to describe form, the neck feels a little cubic because of that harsh shadow in the sternomastoid. Also the ear and nostrils feel way too roundish. but great job, love the texture.

If you want the characters to appear darker than they are, you will need a lighter value BG and probably a near complementary color, you can also add blue or purple to the characters to make them appear darker.

I'm an absolute /beg/. People say to start out with traditional but I'm so fucking annoyed having to erase construction marks and mistakes its getting to the point where I just want to do digital. Does digital and traditional matter for learning? Is this a problem that is just solved as I draw more?

Starting with trad is the smartest and fastest path, drawing is hard digital will only add more, this is what happens to many they start digital and start wasting time on trivial stuff like layers, brushes, blending modes, resolutions, shaky lines etc instead of just drawing.

>I'm so fucking annoyed having to erase construction marks and mistakes
you have 2 choices, 1. start light and finish hard 2. do not erase as much use a kneading eraser and just pat lightly those traces will help latter as value patches.

>Does digital and traditional matter for learning?
yes and no, you will draw more in trad than digital and thats a huge advantage.
pic is a quick sketch I didn't erase anything.

>Is this a problem that is just solved as I draw more?
yes

Always pyw when asking questions it helps.

Please start traditionally anon. The other anon put it perfectly saying digital anons get caught up with mechanics of the program instead of the mechanics of drawing, which is obviously more important.

>im so annoyed having to erase construction marks

This is an inevitable element of drawing traditionally that you’ll just have to get used to. You get the benefit of not seeing them on digital, but that’s mitigated by the fact that learning to draw when you start digitally is much harder cuz like I said it’s a lot more to learn, which can be overwhelming. With trad, you just want your focus to be on the drawing and your material, nothing else. Once you’ve strengthened your drawing skills, THEN transition to digital where you won’t be overwhelmed by the settings AND drawing because the hardest part is already done, now you just take the tools you have and apply them to the principles you’ve already learned.

>is this a problem is just solved as I draw more

I’m glad you asked this, because trad also allows you to draw more. Sure you can bring your iPad to the park but that’s not the same as having a sketchbook, ya know? Plus when you buy sketchbooks, you’ll see blank page after blank page, which may subconsciously motivate you draw more. Plus with digital you’ll probably want to undo a lot of errors since it’s much easier, with trad you learn to live with them, and create more work as a result.

Just look at any master. Even if they’ve don’t digital work, traditional art is still apart of their repertoire, and it’s what most began with. Start trad, then transition to digital imo

Man I have no fucking talent and I can't even trace correctly. I trace so much of my art now because I just can't start drawing anymore it's too hard but even then it looks so ugly
Nor can I even make interesting art with unique poses because I can't study for shit or can I even think of anything either because im dogs but
Idk why I even go on, spent like 2 hours on this and drawing for the past 7 and they're were all so bad
Everything always looks off and I can't draw how I imagine in my head so everything is fetal alcohol syndrome

I KNOW I'm missing something everything looks so off but I literally cannot move my hands in a way to fix them
I'm 18 and have been drawing since I was 7 and I've studied maybe 8 times but it feels so over I can't draw at all fuuuuuauc
Much less anything close to what I have in my brain I have no idea how to start but I also DONT want to fucking read at all because I can't read and I don't have the attention span to because it feels like a waste of time and not something I'll understand anyways because I am clinically retarded and diagnosed with shit like autism and ADHD so my brain is always going to be stupid. But I want to draw and. Be good but I never can and I'm not even smart enough to into aisloppa

I need someone who's less beg than me to confirm this for me, but I think in your case and in that style you don't really need to do color rendering. There's already a lot of shading so it doesn't look flat, and it looks like it's done in the style of old comic books/manga which usually didn't have color rendering.

Maybe everything I'm saying is nonsense though

If my subject is wearing clothes how detailed of a body should I do under the clothes?
Can I get away with anatomy bubbles? Or am I hurting myself in the long run by not drawing the full figure?
Sorry if this is a retarded question. I have no formal training

I dig the pants and yellow lights. Actually I really like it. Her torso needs more rendering I think. When you start rendering you instantly notice the parts that are left flat

Yeah I get what you mean. This black ink style goes well with flat colors, but I've seen some artists pull off the color rendering. It's all about the execution of it I guess. Sometimes it looks really really shitty (like in the 2000s when alot of artists constantly used airbrush type tools) so its a fine line to walk

>>7336467
The values seem fine to me, although I think you're right about the torso, its a bit more difficult to pick where the shadows go since its supposed to be a flat-ish surface though. Some metallic highlights might work though. Thanks

Wiperino. I am totally lost with the legs and the original reference has some insane leg proportions I am not going to emulate
>>
>>7336606
Look at the shoulders and gesture of the figure. It's completely different to yours. If i had to describe it. The fig is like a Z and yours is like a C

Legs start separated like in the figure. In your drawing they start too close to each other.

Don't think of the skirt with several vertical creases yet. Think of it as a piece of plain cloth being held and try to render with shadows and values. Just lines will be harder due to the 3d shape of the cloth

Look harder at the figgy and try to reproduce the pose more carefully. It's a really interesting pose and you are losing a lot in the process of selectively choosing what to copy. You are not good enough yet to know that. Copy everything as close as possible and learn from it

So I have to scrap it then? Good to know.
It is just a very quick 10mins draft I sketched because I found out nobody had done the reference yet so I wanted to doodle it before going to sleep and forgetting about it.

I don't want to copy references 1:1 because it makes me feel like I am stealing from the original artist and disrespecting their work.
>losing a lot in the process of selectively choosing what to copy. You are not good enough yet to know that
itai.
What now then?
Scrap it and just trace the original ref?
When I went to sleep I thought it had potential but now I am just disappointed at how blind and stupid I am.

Don't be so defeatist. It's a practice exercise. You can just say it's X character in Y characters pose and no one will give a shit. No one expects you to make an original masterpiece from the get g

Copy, learn, apply, repeat. Until what you wanted to learn has been absorbed by your brain

>just trace
You could trace and compare. I wouldnt trash your current drawing. Just compare and try to see what were you not able to notice from the ref. You need to learn to observe better
