Tonkers may have betrayed my trust, but I think he was really saying, "whats the point of finishing tonkventures if we already know the ending of the only character that matters". Which I'm inclined to agree with. He already spoiled the happy ending for the best girl so it's pointless to build up to it anymore. But anyways, I think the interesting part of Tonkventures is not so much the ending that did happen, but the endings that could've happend that were avoided. It's this thrill of being on the edge of a bad ending that's almost as exciting as the sweet catharsis at the end of a well written story.Well, in any case, I'd like to explore some of the endings that could've been realized at any given turn.
In this ending tub ends up in the human world or something, however the human world is flawed and is far from a fairy tale ending. Tub normally has a pretty introverted and immersed personality, and really only opens up to tonkers besides that. Well, the ideal ending has her be more active with her emotional engagement and in this ending though she's still pretty, she remains an emotionless introvert. Worse still though she gets prettier(subjective opinion), that beauty only removes her personality altogether, so instead of progressing she only regressed. Not a fitting ending for Tub and very poor writing. Additionally, she develops that hideous red nose you would see drawn by blue hair feminists on twitter or something. Idk why but that red nose they drew was always so repulsive to me and others I know. I prefer regular Tub over this version. And also she has two sets of ears? Like wtf? I don't even think Inuyasha had two sets of ears when he evolved. Just bad character design imo. Not a very good ending for tub in the end.

In another ending, Tub gets trapped in a tunnel that Tonk can't save her from. Being trapped in there forever she ends up turning into this hieroglyphic monster or something like you'd see from Yugioh. I think the tears must represetn her sadness that she felt while trapped in there. It must've become a permanent fixture of her spirit and manifested her into this form. Her eyes look like the eye of Horus for what that's worth, but honestly I just don't want to look out my window at night and see her floating there looking at me. I feel like those pitch black eyes would trap my soul inside them, that's probably what this monstrous form seeks in this end.

This ending of Tonkventures is probably the best one. It's when Tonk and Tub succeed in creating the best world for everyone rather than just for Tub. This is a techno-topia world that succeeds in realizing the Y2K influences that underscores the aesthetic influence of Tonker's art style. However, as we all know, perfection doesn't exist, therefore it would lack verisimilitude for Tonkers to have written this ending in, and therefore this ending will remain the future that never was and can only exist in your dream.>>7356501Coincidentally, had this happened we may be in a techno-utopia right now. In this ending, Tub ends up digitized to save Tonkers from the facility blowing up(or something not so generic). Unfotunately that means tub will never find true happiness. But it's not all downsides. The fortunate consequence is that Tub gets to live forever now, although she never gets to grow up, which brings a tinge of sadness to the situation.. It's a bitter sweet ending that would've been an intersting ending to say the least. Tub finds herself having turned into a cake in this alternative ending. Her hair is made of icing and her nose made of candy. This may seem like a tragic ending but in fact she's quite content and happy. No psychological trauma or misgivings of any kind. The twist though is that she gives me the sense that she WANTS to be eaten! And you have no choice in the matter. In fact, she seems quite certain you'll eat her. Not the ending I want for Tonkventures to say the least.
Lastly. In this ending tub falls into a shredder and is torn to pieces, red liquid drips out of the machine as Tonker stares in horror. Except... Tub is sitll alive? Yes. That shredder was magical, I think, and it turned her into a paper construct. The red was her previous color having spilled out as red ink, and now she's turned blue because she's sad. She can never stand in the rain or get wet again and because she loves water she's eve more ad but her tears are paper not water so her tears dont hurt her.

>>7365570ill try to give some critique, even if i may be not 100% suited to do so because of my own lack of experience, so take everything with a grain of salt..Shape language:i see that you try to follow a general feeling of big medium small with the mushrooms as an example, but you could extend such a principle to the overall composition of the piece, or at least play around with the weighting of the elements within. the tree, skull and fog part are all similar in size, which makes it harder to focus on a distinct part of the piece/ know intuitively what it is that you want to communicate.Within those categories, you tend to repeat sizes again, be it the flowers, the mushrooms, the fog, the leaves of the tree and their surrounding negative spaces next to the tree trunk and so on, And within those shapes, the grouping of the leaves within the larger clumps are almost the same sizes, as are the leaves of the flower, or the curly parts of the fog, which have all very similar widths and lengths. Oh and last thing in these repeating shapes, even the background repeats its sizes of blue highlights quite often..Continuing to another aspect of the shapes, and that is the lack of interplay within them, most things are neatly separated, and often even so with distances similar to their own size. Overlapping shapes are especially good in implementing depth to the piece, although such a thing can be achieved through other means too. Examples are the mushrooms on the left, whos stem in the middle is almost the same thickness as the space to the neighboring ones. also no cap overlaps any section, maybe the leaves overlap the pink mushroom, but because of the same colour and the small region affected, it more so looks like a tangent than anything else.
Which results in my eye perceiving the order on the left as: flower; skull; blue bush(?); three mushrooms. which is a shame, as before that there is a visible depth to the piece, fading away more and more you go closer to the edges. (the roots of the tree are another example, they are all somewhat similar in size and end above the flowers, shortening one in the middle, maybe having the other next to the go beyond the flowers and signal that they are below them, could create for a more interesting interplay between the segments)The tree trunk is almost good, would it not be for the segments above the skull to be all in similar width, even the hole has the same one. but the thickness after the split is different, which is nice to observe, although the length is almost the same again..The teeth are okay, as they are a small part, but you couldve made some tooth cracked and one missing or so, but i dont think it is super needed.. although it wouldve been nice to have something break up the uniform curved shape somewhat.This all could be altered the easiest way, by implementing a perspective that focuses on the part intended by you. be it a fish eye perspective that looks onto the skull, a downwards 3 point perspective to the tree, or the opposite with the viewer only seeing parts of the rest through the fog. all of those would have a different narrative to what you have currently intended tho, but im unsure what it is that you want to achieve. Right now it strikes me as very illustrative for a purpose of confusing the viewer or just seeming hallucinative. i know it doesnt share the same colours or even shape language, but for me it has for whatever reason the same effect as an illustration from the voynich manuscript. Noisy, flat and a bit confusing.
If you dont intend on implementing a stronger perspective to the piece, you can still try to be more careful about the placements of objects within, be it the slight rotation of a flower in the skull, or those that spring forth from the mouth. but the biggest example could be one of the mushrooms, because capped mushrooms like these tend to be flat if viewed from the side, they currently have the effect of being viewed from above, as the curvature is downwards for the top of them, which seems very confusing if you combine the position of them. this could only work if the stem is being rotated towards us slightly. (which may be the case, but we have no indication for that within them) If they are rotated to us, and the stem is straight, we should see the stem not only behind the skull, but start on it, resulting in it overlapping and breaking up the shape a bit. if they start behind it, the curvature of the cap should go upwards, with us being able to look under it (obviously then with the stem stopping in the middle of the new shape created). You could rotate mushrooms and order them accordingly in depth by deciding which direction they should look towards, and then layering elements of the mushrooms in the z direction, to reinforce this.Colours:Ill try to keep it a bit shorter than the one before. as this is a very personal topic for me and can wildly different from one person to another. i prefer to give colours and the alterations between them a depth component, and especially a focus. this can be achieve by first of all deciding which components are in the focus, and therefore stick out the most, be it them being unsaturated or ,more saturated.. funnily, the skull is right now the focal point, because in all the colourful chaos, it is not swallowed, but strikes out to be as the extreme. it has the power to lose this by tinting it slightly by the surroundings, but that would make this piece even more noisy.
Buuut, what can still work, if you have no visible lightsource, and which i especially like to do in more flat pieces, and what i see you have done too, is sort the colour by depth, you have done this in the fog parts at the bottom a bit, by darkening the regions around the outline, which makes sense if one would consider occlusion and the fog to be maybe more hardsurfaced than i would imagine (maybe it is no fog after all and im tripping like some faggot). What i want to say anyways, is that you could decide for 3-4 colours within the orange spaces, and then create steps within them to give a sense of depth, with the lightest tone overlapping the spaces that are darker, and then slowly layer these parts on top of each other. even better would be if one hue shifts these orange tones to blue the more they are in the background, as they would then assimilate more easily. you dont need to shift the value of the orange, but could just change the saturation, which is perfectly fine and i always do in pieces with a perspective too, especially on house facades or long stretches of surfaces that are lighted the same. segmenting these spaces can still give a sense of depth, but that usually works because of the air having a hue to it, and the more air is between you and the target, the more the colour would swallow it up. depending of course on the thickness of the atmosphere. a yellow greenish mustard gas in the trenches will devour the soldiers within stronger than the light air on top the alpines. What im saying is that you could either make the fog in the bottom uniform and let it swallow the flower and or taint the skull in its shades. or make the background swallow up the pieces in the front to create a sense of depth by colouring everything farther back more towards a shade of blue. As an example on how one could colour the skull the easiest would be:

separate it in 4 colours. start with the most front part, the upper edges of the nose. then the cheeckbones, upper jaw. the forth could be the back of the head and the third covers the rest then. Of course those most likely would look like shit if not properly segmented. also one should most like make more than 4 colours, maybe 5 or 6, and use the ranges from 3-5 to add to the skull.Using this method can make a piece look very cloud shaded tho, especially with rounder objects, thats why i would only use it in combination with stronger lighting to break up the shapes, and only use it sparingly with the atmosphere in mind, it shouldnt be the only source of implementing interest through values. and if so, i would rather only use it very sparingly, like only darkeneing the back of the skull poking out below the cheeks.And this will be the last segment: colours have a purpose.That should be quite obvious, but i just want to point out the fact you made the teeth yellowish, which is good for seperating it from the skull, but i cant get over the fact that this guy didnt brush his teeth. same goes for the different colours in the flowers. you neatly separated colours into their different topics, which can work pretty well imo if used for a narrative. but why are the flowers on top the eye sockets orange like the fog and the mushroom, why is there one mushroom with the same colour as one fog, and why do the flowers below the mouth share the same colour with the tree? the single coloured spaces lose their value if not distinctly used for one purpose. the piece loses its narrative because of this.Sorry for the spam.. its an interesting piece nonetheless. sorry that i mainly only critique, but i dont like compliments myself, so i usually just focus on the negative too with others. i wish you good luck with drawing and hope youll stick around. if i wouldnt care or hate you, i wouldnt have taken my time to write this retarded take. thank you for reading and have a nice day.
