I saw a tweet about art school students not improving past eighteen. That seems a little too early, surely there are artists who improved later in life, right?

Its astounding how bad I am on digital. Everything I draw looks like a page from a coloring book.
I posted a drawing on both pixiv and deviantart but for some reason pixiv has a much better like to view ratio on this particular piece and I don't know whyIt has 25 views and 6 favorites on pixiv but 230 views and 7 likes on deviantart. Is it the character choice or something? do certain characters do better on pixiv vs deviantart?
I will draw tomorrow. I just don't have it in me today to draw for hours.
>>7357444Pixiv counts the view when the thumbnail is clicked, Deviant Art counts the view when the thumbnail is visible to the user. So in Pixiv you know the person has clicked your work to view it while in Deviant Art you only know how many people has seen the thumb nail in their home feed or in search feed. For example my average view in Pixiv is about 1000-3000 while in Deviant Art the views are in 10k-30k
>>7357474ah I didn't know that, cool to learn I guess. It explains why some of my art has much higher views on deviantart compared to pixiv while having pretty similar like counts
>>7356667This is only happening because you dont want to line things up with a ruler or digital equivalent (aka a ruler).Learn the alignments on the anatomy specifically. Its not hacky to use construction/guide lines, even as a pro.
>general venting is not allowed nowthanks jannies!
>>7357340When i draw traditionally i can get one image out every day, with digital it's like one image per week
I hate it when I look back at my drawings and realise how inadequate they all are and I come here for solutions but get even more stressed out >>7357340so true, doing digital just makes me not wanna draw
almost every time I think I've made significant progress, I end up getting jealous of other artists who are more successful than me and it kills my passion for art. I can clearly see the divide, whether it's their skill, style, commission frequency, or the positive attention they get, there's something I wish I had and it can make me sick ruminating about it. even though I know they have up to a decade's worth of experience over me, have worked hard and networked to get where they are, and ultimately deserve their success, I can't help but compare and hate my art and myself for all I lack. it also doesn't help that I started late in life and my drawing time is limited, so any failure or delay on my part is that much more impactful since I'm already so far behind. I've even considered finding a less demanding and paying job just so I have more time to draw because I want to reach my art goals asap, or else I feel like I'm never going to get there. I hate that I have this weak, jealous mindset and it's embarrassing to admit, but I keep falling back to it even though I know it's only hurting any potential to succeed. it's so much easier said than done to not be crushed by the overwhelming apathy, I don't know how to get over it
>>7358690If you're anything like me, you're a rush drawer who gets frustrated by your own expectations of yourself and ends up hating whatever comes out on the page. Maybe pyw so we can see where you're at, but I'll go ahead anyway. If you want to improve faster, focus on drawing slowly and mindfully. It takes a lot of brain power to build up and maintain the concentration required of top tier artists. But learning to draw properly while being deliberately slow-handed turns it into a physical issue rather than a mental one, from which you can learn to put more feeling behind your drawings than just yourf haste to reach your goals. Definitely limit distractions like music and social media. Sleep properly. Dropping sugar really helped steady my focus, otherwise I'd get distracted by my own heartbeat. Just fix the extraneous things as best you can so that you make the most of your time.I get that work cuts things short, but force yourself to draw slowly, enjoy the process, and appreciate whatever comes out of each session.
>>7356346I haven't drawn in 2 days. Yet I feel as if I had wasted years... Today, I shall draw!
my sfw submission doodles have gained 50 views in one day on pixiv. what are good numbers to get on sfw stuff?
>>7358806thanks for taking the time to answer earnestly. This issue has been festering for awhile now and I know it won't end well unless it's fixed.>Maybe pyw so we can see where you're atSorry, but the only work I have right now is identifiable to people I talk to regularly who use this site. I really am embarrassed to have this problem, so I'm posting anonymously here.>If you're anything like me, you're a rush drawer who gets frustrated by your own expectations of yourself and ends up hating whatever comes out on the page. Not exactly, but I appreciate the perspective. I take forever to finish any piece (1-3 weeks for full pieces, 1-2 days for refined sketches) due to the lack of time and experience I have. I know I've at least gotten faster and improved since I first started, but my frustration usually comes after I finish something I'm proud of. I might ride a high for a bit, but after that wears off, I see what real success looks like from the same artists I talk to on a daily basis: efficiency, high quality, depth of knowledge, large interest and demand, etc. They really are on another level than me, so it's hard to share my work without feeling a bit patronized.>the restgood advice. I usually just have music on if anything, but work has and will be rough for awhile, so my sleeping and eating habits haven't been the best. I'll give it all an honest shot to fix those areas.
>>7358898Now I REALLY wanna see your art.Nah its cool. I usually hit something in my ramblings, but the fact that you're acquainted with these artists is not something I've experienced. Just don't be too hard on yourself. Whatever goals you're aiming at, Im sure you'll reach them in time. Good Luck.>>7358808Amazing

I'm tired of being tired. I just want to draw ffs
girlfriend is making an art booth with some friends and wants me to submit my art too.feels bad cause im bad and im just going to be embarrassed with it in there.
>>7356562>Be bad at a hobbyI play the recorder fairly average/below average and I have no desire of taking it seriously, I just like playing my favorite video game music while watching sythesia vids it's kind of like guitar hero. But I respect art too much for it to be my hobby and I do not treat it as such, I clock in daily, track my time and invest in it. If I'm not hitting my deadlines I see what I need to adjust or learn to get there and I definitely don't let how I'm feeling get in the way.
i notice i'm sometimes afraid to draw because i can't get my childhood dreams out of my head. i really wanted to become an animator kek, or a character designer. every time i come home from my soulless tech job and start studying i have this weird sense of being in my perfect life. of course i'm just daydreaming, but it hurts
I just realized today i can disable touch in csp (ipad) not only with the gestures but the entire interface…so now i don’t have to worry about my palm pressing into the menus anymore. Feels right at home with my wacom.

Drawing on paper is great for making improvement. If I fuck up with pen/marker it motivates me to do a second full attempt after finishing the first rather than being able to just erase and redo sections on a digital canvas
How do people draw for 8+ hours every day? I can't do more than a hour and a half. I will never be good at this rate
>>7361563Work up to it. Aim for 1.5 hrs consistently as your bare minimum
I have to overcome the hurdle that is having time to draw, but not actually drawing. I could go for 4 hours a day when I don't have any work to do, but I go for 1, sometimes 2 at most.

>>7362565Shhhhhh nothing matters, rid yourself of this unnecessary stress.
>>7362528Maybe deep within the ToS if you check the little box “send my info to help Mozilla dev team in case of a crash”. It’s the bookmark feature on Twitter and I don’t think the artist gets notified when someone bookmarks something. They do get notified if they’re put on a public list.
>>7362528the websites can't know. only hint hey get is that referrer is missing, so it looks like you typed it into the url bar. unless you're thinking about some addon that manages your bookmarks, that is, in which case data is most likely being sold off to someone.

I am autistic about a very specific thing and whenever I draw something related to it, more often than not I get discouraging replies about it. Meanwhile, there's this /fag/anon that is way more autistic than I about his specific thing and he gets his autism encouraged instead? No shade to my fellow /fag/anons, but what the shit. So much for not sticking to a general, I suppose.

>>7361563they're spending 8 hours on a figure that takes you 30 minutes
>>7362658The consequence of not doing it like a flat garbage.
>>7362686well my point is spending a long time on one thing is less mentally taxing than studying different things and drawing different pieces in that same amount of time.
>>7362787that guy is being rude for no reason but you're being schizo. most people also do quick figures in addition to long studies. there's a reason why people time their figures, lots of koreans/japanese animators post 5 mins figures online and they're all incredible. and better to do quick sketches before the long study so you dont realize you polished a turd 4 hours in
I'm getting tired of getting nothing but criticism. I miss the days when people would compliment my beg art and I would believe in them. I would bekieve I was good. Now this board has ruined me and everytime I draw something all I hear is a "this is beg" inside my head.
>>7363503If that's your art, then yes that is turbo /beg/.If you practice and learn and get better then you won't be /beg/ anymore, so try doing that.
>>7363518It's mine but it's very old and it was a very low effort drawing. My current stuff is way better but I'm not ready to hear anyone call it beg as I know you will, so don't even ask me to post it cause I won't.
>>7363525That's fine you don't have to post anything else.I have been trying and failing to learn how to draw for 6 years and I'm still /beg/. I know how painful it is. So when I call other people "/beg/" I'm not saying anything that doesn't apply to myself too. I'm just being honest.I do still have some faith that I'll be able to make it some day. I hope you make it too.
>>7363526Thanks anon. We're all gonna make it.
I need to fix an issue I am having where I wake up 2-3 hours too early and can't go back to bed. I have to rush and draw first thing in the morning because I know I will feel shit and unfocused by noon due to sleep deprivation.
>>7363503I understand how you feel, anon. This board does something to you whether you see it coming or not, it did things to me as well. You got to stop giving the board, embodied as an /ic/ guy stuck in your head, power over you. Bear in mind this place is full of crabs and nitpicky twats that will always find something to bitch at you, not everyone, but most people are like this. Use that thought to remind yourself to not bother pleasing the "/ic/ guy", allowing you to draw for yourself and have fun while you're at it. Af for the compliments part... This may be harsh, but I see your works and you dont have much going on, other than being /beg/. Im not dissing on you for that or anything, its just that, if you want compliments, you must have something that speaks to people and you dont have much at the moment. Just be patient and focus on grinding at your own pace, you will get to the point that people will find themselves complimenting your works even if it has its flaws. I should know, I was there too.Good luck, anon.
man I have ZERO confidence when I draw. Every line I wrench out of my hand is just me desperately begging for something good.
>>7363972Are you sure you know about my work? I thought you couldn't tell which anon I am from that pic
>>7363994not that anon but are you that manga guy who drew the cat girl frying eggs? because i agree with his sentiment. you're far from the worst artist on the board, but people usually give /begs/ compliments to encourage them to get better and to point out the positives in their work. it doesn't mean they're not /beg/, but being /beg/ doesn't mean you're dogshit and should give up.
So John, have you been been doing any painting?

Another night of failure and suffering.Anyway how are you guys doing?
>>7364739Doodling and not learning anything, I'm thinking its over.
Is drawing really just one of the hardest things you can learn?I can’t think of another field where so many people struggle with the basics for so long.
>>7364834Learning guitar is pretty hard too. You can a learn a single very quickly with a teacher, but actually mastering techniques and being able to play whatever you feel like in the moment is something most people aren't capable of

I think I'm gonna test the waters and try doing comissions next year. I'll have to learn how to paint properly and practice more dynamics poses and angles. If I actually make money from it, I will finally buy a tablet. I'd have to take a break from my manga too... I hope I have improved more until then.
I'm beginning to see improvements in my drawings and I want to ink some of them, but when I use a ballpoint pen, the graphite from the draft sticks to to the ink and I have to either apply excessive force or do multiple passes per line. As I understand the problem is with the pen itself, so if I were to use something else, what would that something be? Ideally I want something that would, once the ink dries, allow me to erase the pencil marks. Also, I can't believe it took me almost a year to start feeling this way about my drawings :/
Has anyone tried Swedish Death Cleaning their art? I am going through my traditional art and have already thrown away my lewd sketches. Next week, I should scan my favorite beg sketches and throw them away. Currently, I have 5 boxes, I plan to frame my best works and leave one box of sentimental art. The thought of someone else throwing my art away after my death angers me, but I can't blame them there is so much shit. Instead, I decided to do it myself. I never look back at my old drawings anyway, so it should not be too hard. The hardest part is looking at my art all at once, I realize I haven't accepted my disease and am still grieving myself.
Just how do people maintain more than one creative hobby at a time? I just finished a long commission and I feel like the fatigue of it is preventing me from drawing and it's pushing me to write instead. Before that, I couldn't bring myself to write because I was deep into drawing. It's like a hourglass where I have to wait for the respective side to empty in order to properly get into one hobby or the other. Currently I'm at the "writing side" of the hourglass.I'm going to take the chance to actually finish my fanfic's chapter 4 and possibly complete it, but man, I wish I could easily swap between hobbies.
>draw>ctrlZ>draw>ctrlZ>draw>ctrlZphew, that's my mandatory hour of drawing for the day! Lets see the magnificent piece I comp-
>>7364857Use archival ink like everybody else. Like Sakura Microns.
>>7365086>Just how do people maintain more than one creative hobby at a time? It's called prioritization. If you decided this quarter to focus on drawing until you reach a certain point (something like until my eyes look better, or I've leveled up my understanding of lighting) You can work on that for the majority of your free time then only write to maintain the skill. So 3+ hrs drawing and max 1hr writing, then if you feel that writing needs more attention you can flip it. You can also have themed days- which I'm not a fan of because I like to be obsessed in whatever I'm working in but people do so. Maybe one day you're not really feeling like drawing no matter what you do, that's a perfect chance to switch to writing see what comes out.
>>7364066>3AM today>Baking in the sun for 12 hours>Back at the work camps at 3PM>There's no waterI think I aught to just kill myself already. Is life like this really worth living? I'm so immensely jealous of people living in beautiful, temperate/cool countries with freedom and rights and human fucking dignity
>>7365144ah fuck, I forgot about those. Thanks mate
Can we have just one website for artists that isn't so censorship heavy? It feels like the Internet in regards to content moderation is split in two opposite sides that are completely divorced from each other. On major sites like Pinterest, YouTube, Twitter, deviantART, (even Pixiv), having access to your account is left up to chance until you ultimately lose your account for violating some arbitrary rule in the ToS. I just lost my Pinterest account because I saved a pin in my collection that "promoted self-harm," whatever that means. On the other end of the spectrum, a lot of websites that have little moderation are porn websites, but I'm not a porn artist. I want an art website where all can be welcomed without having the need to walk on eggshells because they might get banned. Maybe it's just impossible for edgelords and normalfags to be in the same place? I don't know, if all other options fail I'll just make my own website.
>>7365868I was also banned from Pinterest, so I started using Bing for reference images. They do not give a FUCK what you look at or save. There's no social aspect to it, though, if that's what you're looking for.

Everything I drew this year was complete garbage. I thought I had a grasp on things and could start drawing with more confidence, but looking back this year, everything that wasn't a study was a complete flop. I hate looking at them. I'm worried I'm getting too old to go back and relearn everything I thought I knew and essentially start over, but I need to get out of this ugly phase.
>posted something perfectly non-sexual on pixiv>it gets rated, probably because lines indicating breasts under clothes were to strongWell, time to get even more anxious about accidentally making too lewd art.
>>7368294Similar problem here. I fell in love with figure drawing when I took a life drawing class and it really changed how I see myself and the body in general. I love small things like creases and folds, the way muscles change shape with extension and flexion, how everything is connected into one whole. What I hate though is having to censor or tag my figures as "NSFW," which puts my work in the same category as gay furry porn. I thought we got over fig-leaf censorship. It's annoying and I wish we had alternative art websites or different levels of moderation to help with these distinctions.
>was excited to get home from work to draw>everything i did was slopman
>>7368308your painting raises the issue. How do you make an image host of any kind that allows nudity in art but doesn't allow obscenity? I mean, your painting shows nude underage boys. How do you tell if it's art or CSAM?picrel even the MET had to go on the defensive because censors wanted it taken down
>>7368372>How do you tell if it's art or CSAM?It's really not that difficult. Justice Stewart said: "I know it when I see it" and I think he's right in what he said. Pixiv has three categories for tagging nudity and sexual imagery: "Safe," "Moderate," and "Explicit." "Moderate" is just another way of defining nude or sexual imagery that isn't explicit - so unfortunately figure drawings can be lumped in with erotic pin-up drawings. The problem (I think) is an issue of moderation and putting all tagging all "nude" works as "sexual" because so many of us are used to equating nudity with sexuality when that just isn't true. This is also a major issue with CSAM in art because someone may want to paint a nude Ganymede or Cupid, but that doesn't make that person a "shotacon." As for the painting you posted, I don't know the intention of the artist nor have I seen their other works, but the gap between the legs with the contrast of the light and shadow is painted in a way to draw attention to the viewer, so it definitely does seem suspicious.

I'm so confused by people who draw the western anime semi-realism style but barely get any better. How do you draw 2000+ finished images without at least learning how the fucking clavicle works or that the deltoids are not just orbs. Is anime too saturated in colors nowadays? It's been bothering me I got up out of my bed to compare any random show from, say, 2012 and the show from 2012 has more duller, muted colors but it's exactly how I remember anime being whereas I pick any random show (that's not the top ones with high production) from 2024 fall roster and everything is too bright and flat looking.

>>7374332CRT maybe. It also doesn't help when a ton of shows pre 2010 are in 360p-480p but I'm not sure if that actually is the original resolution of those shows.Actually funny enough now that I remember, when Rinne no Lagrange's first episode came out and there were threads on /a/ the episode uploaded was in low resolution but it made the mechas and stuff look like a classic anime and it was something a lot of people were excited for...then the full resolution was uploaded. I noticed I gravitate to anime that still tries its very best to capture that muted, dull saturated look of the pre 2010s era but it's getting rarer to see nowadays. Most shows are too blown out now. There are other things I wanted to bring up but I'll leave that for the appropriate board.

why is this forum full of little sissy bitches? i swear there are more threads about random bullshit then there are actual topics. and in those threads you'll find trolls and whiny little babies who need their hand held for EVERYTHING. i swear its like 90% of the people here like the IDEA of drawing rather than actually drawing. shit started to rub off on me until i actually started applying myself. why is it like this? can't something be done

>>7382820>why is it like this?Apart from the obvious fact that this board has a very high traffic of trolls, larpers and shitposters, the issue is that the remaining problem userbase consists of individuals that are either too autistic or too retarded to function in the feedback loop that is civil discussion, either because they never learned how to learn and only look at things at a surface level, or are too entitled to listen and instead only seek to be listened to./ic/ is more akin to the MGTOW movement, which initially started as a circle of self improvement where people either succeeded (and moved on or stayed to help newcomers) or failed (either left or stayed to poison newcomers), ultimately leading to the failure mass overpowering everyone else, chasing away successful people and corrupting newcomers and turning the movement into the incel circle that it currently is.>can't something be doneUnfortunately not. Best you can do is stay in your comfort generals and ignore/hide whatever bullshit you come across.
>>7383034Most of the smaller boards saw a spike in 2020 and then dropped to like half their pre-rona numbers. Newfags were the real plague.
simply turn off your distractions and lock in, if you know what day it is and what number of the month it is, you are not locked in enoughyour only function is to study, apply, create, eat, shit and sleep
why does doodling at work give me the biggest light bulbs but when I'm off the clock I get frustrated as hell? what is this bullshit?
>>7382231>>7382247I know right, every time I tried to use construction it just ends up making my drawings stiff as hell. Maybe I'm just bad at it but I agree that drawing something straight-away instead is way better for my workflow
