We are The Kollective.
We are a cybernetic art group, and we are worldwide.
We embrace digital graffiti.
We seek to reclaim digital space for the people through incendiary art.

In this spirit, we invite you to engage in our first group action.

On Thanksgiving Day, 2024, we shall stage a digital demonstration.

We intend to occupy the comment sections and inboxes of America's biggest fast food chains and food distributors. This list includes Tyson, Wendys, McDonalds, etc.

The reasons are threefold:

To bring attention to food disparity in the U.S. and World Wide,
To show direct action, protest, and reclamation of digital space is possible: Even in the face of an internet more and more heavy handedly policed by the state,
And lastly, to foster new forms of media: an art for the age of the cyborg.

Post all questions, comments, art, and poetry related to the Thanksgiving Day Parade in this thread.

This is a summary of the ideas The Kollective represents. We will break it into multiple posts.

Art Through The Eyes of A Cyborg:
A Manifesto
The distinction between a real concrete world and a digital one is arbitrary. Instead, the net should be seen as a new vector, a 4th dimension of space. It is a new realm of abstraction with its own psychic. New technological developments such as virtual and augmented reality draw attention to this fact. But we must be careful not to see these new technologies as the only means of realizing an integration of these spaces.
They are merely the latest developments in interacting with the abstract reality of the web. A method existing among many. Furthermore, the potential utilization, existence in, and expansion of this space within the limits of current technology has not yet been realized.
I can illustrate how we have throttled its growth with two constructs. They are as follows, the extension of concrete world personas into cyberspace and the prevalence of commodity in its architecture.
When I speak of personas I am referring more to the idea of an individual than the reality. A put-upon expression of who we are for the outside world that is distinct from our internal reality. In part our external projection of self is influenced by others, as well as society, and the social mores of the time. The dastardly hand of commodity plays its part in forming this projection, but its influence is so large that I’d rather discuss it more in its own section.
It suffices to say that this projection is informed by society, the individual is coerced into the performance of this projection, and it portrays an image differing from the individual's internal world. Sartre defines this type of relationship in Being and Nothingness. (more text quotes from Satre). And I shall leave elaboration to this great thinker. I mention it here because we undoubtedly fall victim to this interplay in the digital world.
>>
.Though we have the potential to reinvent ourselves on the web, express ourselves authentically, and grow in unexpected directions we fail to do so. We instead just further elongate the projection of ‘self’ onto the web. And so, we operate in the same constraints as before. This, too me at least, is a great tragedy. Instead of taking the opportunity for reinvention we merely reapply our chains in another dimension.
We could say we’ve been in these chains since birth. From social contract to our parents' expectations, we have labored to invent ourselves while being bombarded by arbitrary standards. How does one escape these chains? The internet and other technology afford us the opportunity. It accomplishes this through the synthesis of a new being the cyborg.
At its penultimate, the cyborg moves through concrete and cyber dimensions freely. However, as a species, we are still young. Having scantly existed for more than 50 years. That is if we take the advent of the computer and related technology as our birth. However, It could be argued humankind has always been cybernetic. A creature extending its reality through intellect. We as a species constantly reinventing ourselves and the world through innovation. Couldn’t it be said, that the discovery of math and the invention of the spear are early strides in cybernetics? They radically altered the ways we live and their application and concept have become indispensable to our species.
>>
I will leave this train of reasoning about the past, and return to the modern plight of the cyborg. One so pervasive, that most don’t even realize they are cyborgs, and therefore cannot realize their full potential. Perhaps, we’ve chosen to avoid the cyborg label out of fear? The media often portrays cyborgs as insidious, a part of a hive mind. But the reclamation and navigation of life through the lens of this label can potentially free us.
When a person views life through the eyes of a cyborg, one first must confront the challenge of personhood. What constitutes the individual? The Cyborg must define this for themselves. And from there, a cyborg augments themselves at will. Disillusioned with the reality of the digital age, and they can traverse both the concrete and cyberspace freely. This enables the cyborg to affect lasting change.
Viewing the world through the lens of the cyborg will be essential to preserve privacy, civil liberty, and creativity in the digital age. Unfortunately, the vast majority of cyborgs are unaware that they are such, and they continue to perpetuate their concrete personas in digital space.
The most trafficked websites do nothing to reinvent the world but only extend society's current trends to a new space. Most require an account with identifying information starting with the name a person is assigned at birth. This composite has been built on by others since our first steps/ Alternative platforms bucking this trend exist, some having greater or less success, but a majority still enforce our concrete persona. Worst of all we are complicit in perpetuating this system. We could choose to embrace new identities and build new worlds, but we choose not to. This is due to a narrowed scope of view enforced by concepts of commodity.
>>
The 4th dimension of cyberspace has always existed as an abstract. I.E. the potential to interact with it has always existed if only we had the means. With the construction of such networks as the Arpanet we acquired the means. But constructing it from a perspective of utility blinded us to its potential, and the means itself became the end.
A culture of commodity flourished on the net. Themes of capitalism and methods for rendering it more efficiently became the normative architecture. Confronted with this many cyborgs failed to realize their full potential and merely used the E-highway to maintain the status quo. In summary, we did not ask what new experiences the net could provide, only how it could make our current experiences better or more efficient.
Slick store fronts with minimalist logos are not designed for depth but expediency. This architecture only serves to reinforce the prevailing narrative in the intricate psychodrama of the web. If this seems far-fetched, one can look back at the work of Surrealist and Situationist thinkers. These men and women developed the concept of psychogeography. They studied the ways landscapes and architecture affected our mood and behavior. They looked at the effect of symbols on the lived experience in detail and noted how it guided perception.
>>
Wouldn’t we be better served if the internet wasn’t entirely composed of virtual strip malls? What would the internet look like today if we wrung it clear of all possibilities instead of moving on to the next expedient technology? How does a cyborg begin? Although the life of a cyborg is ultimately a personal project, I can still postulate on methods that bring us to a more utopian world. The method I propose mobilizes the collective imagination. It is rooted in situationist theory. It is evocative and confrontational. It forces the viewer to question the reality of their lived experience.
We have seen that Electronic Civil Disobedience and Activism can succeed. Groups such as Anonymous and the Users of Floodnet serve as an example. We can also observe through the spread of memes that art and ideas can proliferate on the web exponentially. These works are reproduced and spread by thousands if not millions. What if this force was consciously wielded? It could usher in a renaissance of digital graffiti. A new net can be built where imagination and liberty is fostered on the tagged storefronts of social networking and e-commerce sites. We can create our own absurd communal spaces. We can challenge the very concept of what the internet can be.

Hello everyone, I am an artist based in Virginia. I just got through personally emailing the entire humanities staff of Boston U, UVA, and PVCC and University of San Diego. I operate as part of The Kollective via the Rhizome net.art discord. People have requested examples of art, so I shall post some. More will come as members of The Situationist and Surrealist international as well as other affiliated artists join in.

Your cyborg is a coward and you're a bunch of hypocrites leveraging on a real world issue to accumulate support and claw your way out and extend to webspace as free ""cyborgs"" with zero regulation.
You're gonna need to use your real identity in protest for your cause to hold weight. I'll keep tabs of everyone who participates and gather personal details (I'm not alone btw).
This board is mainly for art learning and practice, if any of your members deal with or peddle technology that's meant to shake the ground human artists stand on then there will be serious consequences.
I hope yoh can stop spamming this thread now.
