Loomis haters turned Loomis appreciators, what made you finally come around?
Who cares time spent making this thread and image could've been spent drawing.
>>7370446Let's be real, nodody here is drawing anyway
realizing i need to learn construction to get better. you can only go so far with symbol drawing. i'm still trying to unlearn symbol drawing, it's hard.
>>7370777Try life drawing. Just do 1 a day. That'll help a lot
>>7370785i did lol, i drew lots of plasters/vases/nude figures in some elective classes in college. lots of contour drawing and not drawing what i see, largely a waste of time for me. i only improved this year after starting loomis/hampton/morpho + perspective books though i'm sure life drawing would be more effective now since i'm guessing less. will probably do some at some point.
>>7370444I spent 5 years learning Japanese to set my hands on rare, sacred, Japanese drawing texts, but in the end, I discovered that it was all Loomis, all the way down.
>>7370794sasuga
>>7370444Reading it instead of avoiding it to spite the memers.
>>7370444I was never a loomis hater but I never bothered to read his books fully. However recently I went to check his paintings and I was blown away by them.I thought the guy was just good at penciling things but I'm amazed at his ability to paint 3d forms, rendering with vibrant colors. His talent was in painting all along and I never knew, because all everyone talks about are his pencil drawings and proportions.I just bought Creative illustrations book online and I'm waiting for it
I feel like most people who foam at the bit over Loomis don't understand it's meant to be a basic way of internalising the proportions for beginner artists, and you're supposed to build on it with more advanced techniques.I've seen too many people say "FUCK the Loomis head, use this technique instead!" and it's just a Loomis head with more detail. Not mention the twitter users who criticise it for being "too idealised and caucasian" when the whole point of the construction lines' layout is that it's adaptable and modular for any facial proportion.
>>7370790You probably reached the point of diminishing returns and the change of pace was what your creative muscles needed to develop. Like imagine if you were working out by only doing squats and bench presses: it would be a well rounded exercise regime but eventually you’re not going to be gaining muscle because your body acclimates to the motions.Still, when it comes to broad artistic fundamentals, figure drawing with living models plus critical peer review represents the best bang for your art development buck, just like bench pressing can form a key component of your work out routine
Still not a fan of him. I do love his head drawing method. But otherwise I still think he teaches correct information very very poorly.I am not debating he knew his stuff and that he was a great artist. But he was a very poor teacher. The only thing I concede is great is his head drawing method.
>>7371527>But otherwise I still think he teaches correct information very very poorly.I haven't gone through Loomis with any great depth, so I wouldn't know and am not asking from the standpoint of a "fanboy," but what makes his general manner of teaching poor? any examples in particular?
>>7370444I found out that the anime and manga industry wouldn't be the same without Loomis-Sensei, Jack Hamm and Morpho.
>>7371531I have a lot, but the one I always mention is how in Fun with a pencil he fails to explain that before even atempting to draw his "blooks" you do need to be able to draw primitives, elipses and cubes and a complete /beg will fail HARD without that knowledge. That's why you see many people in /beg failing to draw them. Loomis defenders will mention he sorta mentions this one the page before chapter 1.But I inisist this is poorly explained as he just assumes you already have that knowledge. This little omission filters people HARD.
