Obviously you can draw whatever but if you don't intend to reference something actual then you don't actually need reference. You don't need to understand things that aren't important, but if the dark fantasy aesthetic is important to you, you should understand it.Here's a picture of a gargoyle. You might not know this, but they were used to remove rainwater from the roof and move it some distance away from the building. They are decorated spouts. With this information, if you ever want to place grim looking devil statues on a building, you'll know their proper placement and posture. You cannot learn anything to this level of accuracy from a system that generates bullshit.
