This is going to sound like a dumb question, but what motivates you to draw every day? is it a goal, a habit, what?
i keep finding myself spending all day at work thinking about drawing but then I get home and its the last thing I want to do, and I have no idea how to fix this cycle.

The full length drawings may still be full of exaggerated contractedness and elongations but that doesn't mean the artist doesn't know how to rectify those anatomical issues, it mostly indicates that the style is imbalanced or unsure of what it's going for.
>>
>>7373519
A huge habit since I was 3, I filled my school books and notebooks with sketches, they literally look like deranged schizo scribbles because I'd sketch over sketches when I ran out of space. Problem is, I feel like that actually makes it harder turning it into a job. It's not like kid me cared about fundies either so while drawing feels natural I'm not that good.

I'm doing really poorly at art right now. Pic related is not mine, but basically what I'm aiming for right now. I'm really stressed about a lot of things and barely have the time to practice drawing, and when I actually sit down and do it, I feel like I'm doing everything completely wrong and that I'll never progress like that. It hurts so bad because I should only need a month or two of fairly consistent practice to reach a low level like this.

ALWAYS mark where the color bone is even if you don't intend to show it. Knowing where the collar bone is will show you exactly where the shoulders shoukd be and how the neck should behave.
Additionally for breast's mark where the breast connects to the chestthen draw the breast fat around it. While breast's vary in size wildly. Their connection point to the torso vary considerably less.

/beg/ what is your opinion on "art" like this?
>>
I'm autistic, with ADHD. I can't focus on trying to get better at all or even come up with anything to draw without just giving up and going back to looking at my phone and doing something else.
I've legitimately never been able to commit myself to any serious hobby and have gotten lazy over the years with my only actual one which is writing and the only reason I'm good at writing is because I wanted people to be able to understand what the fuck I was saying and I wanted to write good stories because I thought I'd never be able to make them in a visual medium, but that's it. I've never been able to commit to a serious routine, schedule, or anything. I just sit in my room online doing basically nothing.
Everything I try doing looks so daunting and impossible. I tried learning Source Filmmaker as a teen and I gave up immediately because it looked too complicated. I tried learning how to make my own games in game maker, gave up immediately and never touched it. Even something like drawing just looks so complex and impossible. This is what it's like for everything I try doing.

I'm nocolor and now truly inspired to try my hands at adding some to my figures...
How would I start getting this look? I understand: study it, the art is the tutorial. But, you see, I never have colored before. I pick the tool and add a new layer and paint a bit and it looks like utter shit. I cannot even get flat saturated colors right.

Maybe it's time to look into brushes. What technique did the artist here use?

It's just hard to have fun at this point. I've mostly been doing tracing exercises so far. I did that thing where you turn a drawing upside down and freehand trace it, after a while I got sorta stable then I was confused on how to proceed from there and got tired of it. Most recently I did some oekaki, I have a really old drawing tablet that I used for this. Tried to draw some Maplestory mobs, the two last snails I drew with reference but I mirrored them in my mind. It got significantly worse. I just don't know how to proceed, anything I do feels like I'm doing it wrong and I won't progress from it.
>>7373720
Yeah, it's not a super high goal. I found them while I was looking for the source of an edited photo on DeviantArt, and the artist barely posted any drawings. But I like the aesthetic sorta and that's my goal, and it feels really lofty to me nevertheless.

Sometimes taking a step back can lead two steps forward. I originally had frustration with the shading and rendering of this piece until I realized I made a mistake. I created two separate renders and collided them. I fixed it, but how do I avoid a similar error in future experiments?

But how can I be sure I'm even progressing? That's the main problem I think, I often feel like I'm doing things completely wrong in some way, ensuring that I never progress and I'm just wasting time.
>>
>>7373773
You won't know immediately, it's a slow gradual process. But you'll pick up small tips and tricks along the way and you'll notice some things come more naturally. And if you do something wrong just post here and we'll point you in the right direction. But first you have to apply yourself.

I'm currently going through a nightmare in terms of courseload and I'll probably be too stressed to do anything more. But pic related is the only thing I've ever done that was from imagination, not traced either from art or from a real-life object I had in front of me. It's a while now, I'm doing a really poor job at keeping up. But either way, I remember thinking it the one with him sticking out his tongue looked really good, then I drew the one with him holding a gun and it looked really bad and I felt down.

im making each day's exercise from The Complete Guide to Drawing Anime & Manga the main thing i try to get done for 2-3 reps, because it feels more uncomfortable than sketching by ref, in fact prior to starting that book i dont think in my whole life ive tried to draw anything starting with just a circle and trying to fill in from there by subdivisions and ratios
ive done a couple block photo ref sketches and a couple sighted ref sketches, some prior familiarity there from a middle school art class

i decided right now to try and pencil copy a creayus drawing
>>
>>7373826
I see. well I think it's good that you have some structure in your study, something to guide you. a lot of beginners can hinder their progress by drawing aimlessly. as another anon said in this thread, you're typically not going to see much improvement more immediately - especially if you've only been drawing a few days. all you can do is try your best to vet a resource (which presumably you've done, which is why you've chosen the anime/manga guide you did), and have the confidence that it will lead you in the right direction. I know when I was first starting out it took me a few months to really see some substantive improvement. the next best thing you could do is get people to see your art to better gauge if you've been making improvements and give advice on how you can improve. it could be in these threads, if you like - and just because most people here are begs as well doesn't mean we can't see things that other begs can't - but you could hypothetically go elsewhere. hell, you could even hire an instructor if you had the means and desire. at any rate, you just need to have faith that your process is working, try to persist, see if you can get others to help see where your holes are and if you're improving, and periodically try to improve/update your study habits. once you have the evidence that you're improving, it'll get a lot easier to persist.

Also noticed I did gross anatomy errors with the right arm (ignoring other less obvious anatomical mistakes). I did not practice head and hands yet, so no surprises there.

>>7373892
better than nothing. though I would say pay more attention to the relationship between the relationships between the features and their angles. also, perhaps some anons here would disagree, but if you're a beginner I don't think minute figure drawings are particularly productive. perhaps as a warm up they're fine, but to really get a bang for your buck I would do mostly somewhere between 10 min-1 hr, but if you plan to do fully-rendered figures at some point, you should also do hour or longer figure studies here and there too.

The sub surface scattering should be more saturated and have cleaner and stronger shape language similar to the circular shapes of the highlights, that's what makes it look somewhat amateurish. That being said it's a relatively well done character illustration taking into account the theme being consistent in both the background and font, just needs to have more cohesive shape language to bring it to the next level. Keep it up good stuff anon.

Multiple questions here.
I thought I had the ink brush I wanted for Photoshop, but now I'm not so sure. It's close, though, and maybe I just need more practice. It works best at a small size, around 5-7px.
Essentially, I want the brush to start with a thickness, thin out, and then end with a thickness.

do you have a generally recommended resource for learning digital? until this week i never really tried doing inputs more complex than what MSPaint offers.

im underutilizing CSP basically treating my pen tablet as a piece of paper, which means im pointlessly handicapping myself because of the hand/eye disconnect, low stylus friction/hard surface, and i dont have a large tablet and im just realizing how small a lot of my motions are. and that's on top of just fucking around with pen and pencil.

for starters i know tomorrow ill try zooming in more often to use more of the tablet surface, maybe try rulers and grids instead of my dipshit lines

Are there any books that are "go from retard with no skill to drawing anime pretty good" that aren't just the 10 dollar books you'd buy to be a cool kid during the book fairs when you were in 6th grade?

like why is it so hard to find a serious "learn to draw manga" book? Anyone have one?

It is. I personally don't have that level of control to do it myself without relying on my puter. It will be something I have to practice.
Someone posted a cool exercise to practice line weight. I don't think I saved it.

Anyways. Here is another practice. Came out pretty nice. One thing that has been on my nerves with my work is how thick my lines usually are. I want thinner lines.

Okay fren, thank you. Here is one I completed awhile ago but messed around with again recently I included the original for reference. I have a few more but don't want to clog the thread up especially if people don't think they belong. I don't know, I just find it hard to realistically re-create skin tones they always just look....off somehow and I am not very artistically inclined or know how to draw or anything I just basically use hundreds of solid colour layers in photoshop to basically paint these photos into colour mixing different colours and opacities together.

Thanks fren, these two are properly my best ones in terms of skin tones/realism I usually struggle with them but it also depends on the quality of the original image/how close or far they are. I got a bunch of unfinished ones but don't want to clog up the thread they do look kinda cool though with certain parts colourized and the rest still back and white, it's hard to find motivation as there is not really anywhere to post them to get feedback/just discussion to want to do more. Also not a wehraboo just have the most reference images/cool high res images of Germans and it's a big pain the ass researching all the colours of different countries equipment and getting reference images.

It's pretty tedious, you basically have to use a bunch of solid colour layers in photoshop at varying opacities and stack them on top of one another to get a desired colour on the black and white photo. By the end of it you can easily have hundreds and hundreds of layers grouped into little files for like someones hand or face which can easily have 10-30. There is a lot more to it than that but that's a large part of it. This is what it looks like in photoshop, I use to do them all just with my mouse but a couple years ago I bought a cheap Huion like pressure sensitive drawing tablet with a stylus and that helps with blending the colours a lot better.

This is a pic where I am struggling a bit with the skin and stuff.

Paradoxically, heads and faces are hard because they are easy to simplify (into something that definitely looks like a human head, but doesn't necessarily look like the one in the reference). People can end up defaulting to drawing from preconceived notions of what a head/face looks like, instead of carefully observing the reference. This is something I noticed in myself and had to consciously fight when making the drawing attached to my post.

To be fair, this is essentially "just look harder bro", but it's a realization that helped me, so it might also be useful to you.

Also, heads from weird angles will look weird even if you draw them accurately.

we need more of this. for what it's worth, eyeballing it the proportions and shapes look quite good overall. the only thing that really stands out is the lighter values. your light of course is going to affect that to an extent, but I would bet that you can still push the darks a fair bit further to get the contrast more comparable to the ref. perhaps you know all this and got as far as you got with the time you alotted yourself, but this could still be useful to another anon, so I'll say it anyways. also the broken, linear rendering of the darker values like on the cheek sell the value less when there's white (or simply lighter) patches in between.

Sub surface scattering is just what happens when light enters the slime material. It bounces around and saturates with the color of the material before exiting and producing a saturated color. I just made the shapes more consistent with the circular shape language. This isn't the specific style you should choose but an example of what consistent shape language is. Nice work. Impressive rendering. (Assumed the coloring/rendering was done with AI at first)

>critique
The composition is busy. Focal points aren’t well-defined. I think this is partly because of how relatively detailed and bright everything is, as well as every area basically having the same combination of colors rather than more specific color schemes within each group of subjects. Kind a too evenly distributed assortment pf blue, purple, yellow, green, pink, rather than certain colors being more rare within the piece thereby attracting attention to key points of interest.

But very nice forms, and very impressive rendering, anon

I actually think the proportions came out more or less okay, but the problem is that the initial measurements were pretty off and I had to adjust while shading and finishing up the outline

I'd like the get better at being able to take accurate measurements (but also be able to eyeball and make adjustments later)

Maybe the problem is the references are on my phone, but probably the biggest problem is lack of knowledge/experience of how to do it

I've repeated after a few guides and a dozen vids on drapery and after all of them I'm not sure what I'm missing in my current approach
Critique/tips? I can only guess that I should've made the fold-defining lines to be more transparent and/or colored closer to the shaded sections
>>
>>7374573
I would get a reference with more defined folds when practicing. There's not a lot going on with that one.

It's called intuitive perspective. When artists are good enough, they just went with the flow and eye-ball perspective. You don't need to draw perspective lines for every subjects LOL.

My younger brother is a nurse who needs to wake up at 5am in order to work a 12 hr shift.

Trouble is, this is exactly when my brain and inspo turns out, it's unironically before morning time in Japan I was born on a different countries time system as "natural" and even moving places doesn't help but luckily I may have finally solved my problem!

Where I live, they closed down the last Dunkin' that had 24/7 service. TODAY i gloriously decided, in sleep deprivation to drive to the CASINO ( i have no money just adhd) and wow I got to sit at a bar and draw (initially with coffee until someone found a pen) while qt3.14pi and her asian friend walk around in short black dresses fishing for tips.

What a fucking godsend, not to mention this is way better, more focused (i did bring sunglasses since CASINOs like to light up the place so you don't feel the passage of time)

2four seven motherfucking spot to draw. This casino was always open, i just never realised at like 4am they serve coffees FOR free.b(__ $__$)bb($._$__)b

Don't use black line art. You don't have to use lines at all, you can always add it in the final stage.
Study color theory. And light.

That’s what I figured, I’m just trying to get used to consciously incorporating it, because I’d much rather do what I’m doing now than have a piece with super fucked up perspective because I tried to eyeball it even tho I don’t know enough yet. Good thing is, I will get to the point that I eyeball it as I learn more, so it’ll be fine

>>7374630

>>
>>7374666
Nice job defining planes in some areas. I can tell this study was outside of your comfort zone. Please accept my constructive crit. You're missing a lot of midtones, your value range also goes too bright, need to bring it down slightly. Your upperbody proportions are off. You can get away with most all of it except your torso. It's too long, needs to curve to the right more. It resulted in your leg proportions being shorter than the ref and changing the body type. Overall it's think it's a good study and you should be proud that you're putting in the work. Keep it up. To keep it simple, proportion and value were your biggest weaknesses in this study.

It definitely was outside my comfort zone. My style usually isn't that painterly and I never draw males. Wanted to challenge myself a bit.

During the painting process I already noticed, that there is something wrong with the proportions, so thanks for specifying what exactly.
The colors also definitely do look off, I tried manually picking them, instead of using the color picking tool. The study was mostly done because I want to get better at values/color, I need more practice with that.
Thanks

You're losing the finer pencil detail like the shading when scanning. If you're going to scan a drawing I recommend rendering in ink first.

I know. I don't like that I have to sacrifice so much detail. I haven't gotten into inking yet and I don't really know how to do it so that it doesn't look messy. Also inking would mean I'd have to learn to turn the shading into hatching

To start, I used a 3d reference for pose, but it can be tricky. I mainly use photographic references out of fear of relying heavily on 3d references.
Second is inconsistancy. As in "I cant draw two things at the same size."
Third, I did not use photo references.

3d references can be hit or miss. I enjoy setting up scenes to get a good sense of the vibes and the theme. But 3d references can be limiting at the same time. So I only use it for posing references.
