this is less animation more motion graphics

i think you might be able to do it through davinci resolve, it's a free video editing program. I havent used it for that myself though. what i do is animate in tvpaint then import it into CSP because i like the CSP camera tool

Hello anons of the animation thread general
Do you have any advice for someone looking to animate but all they have is trad materials? Too poor for digital.
Besides materials, gimme the exercises that have served you best.
I've got some sticky notes and I've been doing various ball related activities with them, but they're actually really hard to use because of how tiny and fragile they are.
>>
>>7375069
I'm not sure digital is actually more expensive than traditional.
Aside from sticky notes to make flip books what specifically do you have access to? Do you have a computer? Do you have a smart phone?
>>
>>7375097
>I'm not sure digital is actually more expensive than traditional.
I guess it's more proper to say too poor to afford a drawing tablet.
I've definitely seen that trad has a lot more hurdles and expenses, but I've always drawn trad and it's what I naturally gravitated to before realizing that sticky notes would not cut it lol
>Do you have a computer?
I have an old laptop on windows XP. It runs pretty slowly with modern programs, but there are always older versions.
>Do you have a smart phone?
Yes

Going to be out of college with a BA by 2026, how is the job scene looking? Should I be learning any specific programs besides Harmony right now to better my chances? Would grad study be a smart idea?

That is a very grim statement my guy. Well, then again, it just looks grim from where we are standing. Maybe some good stuff will come about because of TAG in the coming years, but as it stands, if you're doing animation, work on that portfolio, network, but just keep in mind you'll probably gonna have to be doing a lot of independent work and that the market is currently in a big drought.

you'll need a cheapo plastic transparent drawing pad, a portable light bulb/torch, and one of those tables with a drawer under the drawing table
voila ya got the ingredients for a rudimentary light table
i used something similar back in highschool
most animator's did it this way before tech
to compile n render there's a stop motion app for android
that lets you take pictures n align them yourself
might have to build a makeshift stand to get them consistently tho
on paper/ink you'll have to experiment with what you have available
i used the cheapest thinnest paper for rough pencil stuff
then sightly better paper with black ballpoint pens for cleaner renders
depending on the light source i'd reccomend limiting work time to avoid damaging your eyes
best of luck anon god speed

>>7375230
have an impressive portfolio n you'll find work
if not then you wont as simple as that
the purpose of college isnt for your growth
its to filter out the NGMI's from GMI's for the industry
be competitive n dont get complacent

This one is a bit harder, but also great advice. I'll work towards making some tools. I've got an idea for a peg board.

Thanks anons, now if you have any great exercises you'd recommend, please give them too. I've already read a few of the OP links and have started reading animator's survival guide (thank you for the links cat bird devil thing >>7375994 )

Godspeed anon also remember to have fun
Fun havers dominate over those that only work hard
Stick to the Animator's Survival Kit for now
read the pdf and download the video series too there's a lotta good info in there with seperate animated example videos for reference
Then you can branch out into whatever animation specialization you prefer be it character acting/effects/action/etc
There's plenty of resources here and they're not going anywhere don't download and hoard everything at once
Take what you need for now and get through it first
Even if any of the links go down I've got them all on my hard drive so worry not I'll make back ups
they'll always be accessible : DDD

Anyone here use Moho? I have some questions relating to vector line styles for a rig, if I want to try and replicate the look of a show's lineart as close to identical 1:1 as possible. I believe the show was originally drawn digitally, just obviously with a completely different flow/tools used.
inb4
>vectors are shit
Of course flat default vector stroke rounded end-caps are shit. This is a question about adding effects to the linework so that it looks better than cheap vector shit you see pumped out on YouTube Kids.
I know about "line boil" and while that's awesome, I think it changes the linework every frame and makes some of the line densities inconsistent.

I've been doing some cheap animating for a bit and feel like my process is very damaged, and wonder if theres better software or a better way of doing things. idk any standards for doing this and this is what I've settled on doing having no prior knowledge
>Draw/color every frame separately, reusing some assets from last frame only if it works
>Import that file with all the frame layers to photoshop
>Animation is me turning on/off the groups of layers to get each frame.
>Create new frame, turn old layers off, turn next layers on, create new frame, so on
>>
>>7398568
that does seem like a clunky way to do it. when youre drawing and coloring it before, are you flipping between the frames, or are you treating it like a series of illustrations and only see the timing after importing to photoshop? unless it's very simple stuff like eye blinks i'd recommend doing the drawing part in something that will let you preview it in motion earlier. csp is better than photoshop for animating imo
>>
>>7398588
I flip between the frames while in the drawing software yep, it would be nice to get them to play in sequence as I go but I can get a sorta alright idea of how well it looks in motion just by turning them on/off as I work. Then yeah when I bring in the photoshop animation window I adjust their individual timings.

I'll look into CSP's animating tools, I just used PS to finalize it all because it was what I had

Are there any good shortcuts to make frames for parts that just rotate a bit while keeping their shape besides sucking it up and redrawing? For instance I want to make some locks of hair bounce or sway lightly, but any type of rotating or scaling in an art program would introduce some amount of visual degradation
>>
>>7409806
Bite the bullet and redraw, it's good practice either way. That said, if you use a vector-based program you can do a lot with the transform tool.
I'd recc using the transform tool when doing your roughs, then cleaning up your lines on the second pass. It's easier to trace a sketch than draw from scratch

lovely. stuff like this is why i keep coming back to hand drawn 2d.
every once in a while i'll spend weeks doing r&d in 3d so i'll never have to think about perspective or cleanup or ink & paint or keeping on model again, but stuff like sliding clothes, surface interaction and volume preservation is nearly impossible, and even when it does work it only does with physically-based rendering (no line art) and conventional interpolation (auto tweening).
after i hit enough walls i'll put it aside and draw some tits bouncing in 5 frames that looks better than any 3dcg.
hopefully someday ai will be able to do the cleanup & paint.

Hi everybody, I'm a complete novice with animation. Most I've ever done was a classic balloon-flying-away-and-popping on sticky notes as a kid. I'm an alright illustrator though.

How difficult would it be to make something like what the lofi girl youtube channel does? Just a person sitting in a room occasionally taking a sip of a drink and maybe typing, maybe a pet with a flicking tail + ear, with some alternating lighting. I imagine I can just draw up the room itself and then place the animated portions on top of it all right? Use the same background through every frame and just maneuver around it? How hard would this be for someone with okay experience drawing but no experience animating?
>>
>>7409552
Sorry for late reply. Hate 4chans new method to "log in" to post. Takes too long that I'll often say fuck it and leave.

Downloaded the resources and looked up some examples. looks like one of my issues with my animation is that the smoke isn't expanding past the initial explosion. Its not rising. Working on that right now. thanks for the feedback.
>>
>>7410450
With anything new its going to take longer than someone who knows what they're doing. Call it the newbie tax where a 4hr job becomes a 6 or 8hr job because you don't know what you're doing.

You have the right idea on how its set up. Read up on some animation books like 'Animators Survival Toolkit' to get the jist of some basic principles then start chipping away at what you want.
>>
>>7410450
If you're familiar with layers it should be fairly intuitive, you basically tell the animation program which layers to show on what frames
>>
>>7410450
Should be fairly straight-forward, everything would be loops; just a matter of intermittently switching from the main loop to a variation and back again. It might also help to separate elements of the picture into different loops so it doesn't look weirdly synchronised.
>>
>>7409899
All you really need is flats, just look at 99% of golden age animation.

>>7409935
Skewing rather than rotating the hair would probably suit that movement better. Free transform where you can move the four corners independently is also great but takes some practice. Of course you'd want to transform the whole chunk of the hair, then transform each curl but it's a time-saver for minor motion that isn't the centre of attention. After that doing the clean pass by hand will naturally make it look more organic.

>>7410040
For me it's an issue of having to slow down your lineart process to make sure every tiny gap is closed, then still having to switch to the brush tool because of a bunch of microscopic gaps that're only visible if you zoom in 5000%. The gap tolerance option is too much of a hassle because it doesn't fill in tight corners or narrow areas.
It's not so bad for short loops, but it's mind-numbing if you're working on a longer project. I'd far prefer going looser with the lineart for a more expressive animation then colour a few key/smear frames and let the program fill in the rest.

>>7410063
Fuck yes!!! This is good!!!

>>7410170
Lower the colour profile and embrace the dither or use the web colour palette.

>>7410450
I'd recc doing a base sketch of the average pose and then doing your animation sketches over that. Maintains proportions and gives you a baseline to go back to when they're switching to another action.
e.g. Base Pose -> Looks out window -> Base Pose -> Sips Coffee -> Base Pose etc.
Also if you are a complete novice look into keyposing. You basically start with all the main poses, fill in the midpoints of the movements between them, fill in the midpoints of those, and keep going till it looks smooth.

had folders for each loop, and premade avisynth scripts for different frame rates that i'd copy into each folder.

the initial path is still too slow and static, and afterwards there's too much wiggling.

This thing is suppose to ultra fast not continuous, UNLESS you are doing some kind of lightning spell cast or something.

It makes more sense when you understand they aren't 'animated memes' they are memetic animation, rather than depicting existing memes the animation itself is the meme, the video inspires other people in that community to replicate it.
So they'll reuse the music and the broad motions and theme of the animation.

There are very likely several other videos of other OCs bouncing around in the same way to that music.
>>
>>7418947
>yes, maybe depends from a person to person basis really but cant hurt

Fuck I guess there is no other way. It's like 3 almost 4 months alone on my roadmap if I go at a normal pace and not kill myself in the process.
>>
>>7419353
Scratch that. I'm noticing my fav artists aren't using anything too complicated with linear perspective, it's mostly about the characters. Therefore a general book would do for now.

CSP's timeline and playback are complete shit, would not recommend it at all - can't speak for Krita.
Blender's Grease Pencil is one of my favorite of the free open-source animation softwares.
>>
>>7419571
i use krita and i both love and hate it
its really simple and straightforward for frame by frame but it lacks shit like tweening implementation which can be useful for storyboarding and backgrounds. also might be a personal issue but playback lags like shit when the resolution gets too large, it just drops frames and is completely useless in that case. i usually do roughs in krita and then the final pass in blender with grease pencil
grease pencil has its own suite of issues but its free and mostly simple so fuck it
>>
Grease Pencil is good, if you're already an experienced Blender user

It's designed in a way that is somewhat similar to how an animator would work traditionally.
Retas Studio which is by the same company is like that too, so the transition wasn't too hard for me..

as someone used to sony vegas timelines with video editing it took adjusting. I really wish I could (or have yet to discover a means to) just drag each frame's borders to adjust how long it is, and pull elements from the layers into the timeline.

Forgot to mention the only downside to greasepencil is it starts to chug when you're doing longer animations but the way it's set up makes it really easy to split things up into multiple files as you go along, it's good practice to separate shots anyway

How do you guys approach copyright? There are a couple of songs/music that inspired entire stories I'd like to animate, I've already started with one, but I still don't really understand how this copyright thing works? Can I still be copyright striken even if I don't make money out of it? I just really want to tell a story?
Can someone hold my hand and walk through with me like I'm a toddler? Please.
>>
>>7424109
if it aint monetized its fair game
beside its less about the song itself and more about the cover
one workaround of grouchy copyright musicians was using fan covers of the song
if u have a music freind you cab have them whip up a remix or some such
odds are tho if the song is mainstream enough there's plenty of fan cover/variant available
just ask for permission to use their version and ur golden

Any tutorials on using Csp for animation?

any other programs recommendations?
>>
>>7427402
the main thing to know is if you want it animated, tun on the animation window and in that click"new animation folder". everything you want to change frames needs to go in that folder. things you want to keep static stay outside it. and you can make multiple animation folders to sort different moving elements easier.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8F9eJjDkvtE

>>7427494
I got a somewhat basic understanding of it, looking back on some stuff ive made, keeping the static things outside is something so basic but it escaped me

It's nice! Can you logically explain why you use 'blurry and grainy' strokes? Or is it purely an aesthetic and intuitive choice ?

I haven’t looked into it deeply but I get the impression that the lack of 'hard edges' allows for a greater range of flexibility and 'brotherhood'.
>>
>>7432171
i've used grease pencil a lot, just sketching for myself.
has the potential to be the best software for hand drawn animation -- the way brush strokes are sampled points like bitmap instead of bezier curves like vectors is novel -- but even after 10 years or however long they still haven't implemented a "blob brush" or a functional eraser tool that works with fills. idk how they've done so much development and gotten so much attention from the industry without fixing those basic functions.
there was a big internal revamp in 4.3 that broke a lot of features and addons but didn't really implement anything useful for the end user who's just doing hand drawn, so 4.2's more usable for hand drawn right now imo.

I think he's saying you're nothing special compared to most internet animators but you're the strongest animator in this general.

i love this formulae japs tend to use
of extreme face close-up > debris from off-camera obsecures screen > character is fully posed/at end of their motion
they occasionally swap things around
but over all its very comfy to look at

Is there a way to sort or categorize multiple animation scenes in CSP's timeline? Like I'm going to have 4 camera cuts for 4 different scenes and each has its load of layers. Is it possible to separate each of them somehow, or is there no way to stop the timeline from being absolutely massive with the amount of animation folders of all 4 combined

I put every shot in a separate file so im never looking at more than a couple hundred frames at a time, usually much less. Keeps the timelines manageable and doesn't bog down performance.
>>
>>7439865
But to answer your question, I don't thinks it's possible.
>>
>>7440036
How do you then combine the separate shots later if I may ask? I'm sorry if this is basic knowledge, I'm trying to learn
>>
>>7439865
What >>7440036 said, multiple separate files in one folder
I combine them with my torrented copy of sony vegas
>>
>>7440069
I use a video editor to put everything together at the end. It's a bit tedious to manually export all your shots but there's no way to batch export animation files as far as I know.
>>
>>7439865
At this point you'd probably be better off using software specifically designed for animation rather than fighting with CSPs hack job.

>I combine them with my torrented copy of sony vegas
Do you find that better to use than premiere? I'm thinking about switching
