For the sucessful artists here, how did you guys start getting followers and commissions on social media after starting from absolute zero? I don't want tips on how to do it, I just want actual examples.

Why should I share my secrets to competitors? Especially in this economy.

join a big artist community and interact with everyone

all of these and making friends

i got my followers from just posting my art every day and drawing whatever popular shit appealed to me, interacting with people especially other artists = they glaze you and retweet you and it starts a spiral that gives you 10k followers before you know it
essentially:
>actually fucking draw and especially shit people actually want to see
>be social
>?????
profit

You can say this, and maybe you're right. But more artists is arguably better , because the field becomes more popular.
People will spend more money on art then.
It's hard to say which is right . But the second option sounds nicer.

I went through a period where I would post a drawing literally every day. It hurt my improvement but I grew quick. Then I slowed down, made more complex drawings and took fewer, better paid commissions.
You end up with a bit of follower base being dead, as your art changes so does your public, but thankfully no social media punishes you heavy for it except youtube.

>post le funny memes that people want to see
Welp, I'm doomed.

Literally posting my shitty art every once in a while in twitter, using some hashtags at the beggining, although it doesn't help much

I interacted with anons on 4chan too, I think that's what got me commissions more than anything

I spent months trying to grow from 0 and I'm finally starting to get traction using the following method. You don't have to post memes or follow trends, you don't have to play nice or be fake, your art doesn't even have to be good, you just have to be a little patient and consistent. This works on Twitter and Bluesky, I don't know about other platforms:

>first you need to RESEARCH, make a list of subjects/franchises etc that you personally genuinely enjoy and would like to draw
>check the hashtags associated with this franchise. But you need to keep a few things in mind
Simply put, you need to target the autists. Aim for an active, established franchise with a cult following because these have established autists who will always retweet you.
To give you a concrete example, check #limbuscompany. There are new posts made with this hashtag every day, art posts seem to consistently get between 10 and 300 likes, every post gets at least some attention and the biggest ones get upwards of ~5k likes. That's the perfect climate to grow your little baby account.
AVOID TAGS THAT ARE TOO MAINSTREAM. For example at the moment #BLEACH or #GENSHIN seem to be doing crazy 80k+ likes but that's only because the people posting that shit are already popular. For these big franchises, instead check which specific characters have good #s to post under.
Obviously don't go after a completely dead #s or #s that cover very broad topics (#fanart #oc), it won't work.

>narrow it down to a SHORT list of 3-6 hashtags with these qualities. Make them loosely related, for example all related to vtubers or all related to a specific gaming genre, you want them all to be in the same general plane of existence. This is important, because while someone who likes Dark Souls will probably have an interest Sekiro too, in comparison the chances of someone being into Dark Souls and Hello Kitty at the same time is tragically small.
So you have these precious #s. What now?

You need to perceive your audience as bunch of animals with a very specific diet. You don't feed horse meat to pandas, you feed them bamboo only, you HAVE to be 90% bambooposting or the pandas will get annoyed and not care about you. You're the bamboo guy, your niche is bamboo, target the bamboo autists.

So get posting under these #s (never more than 2 per post). Trial and error, see what works, what doesn't. BE CONSISTENT, post twice a week, even if its a shitty doodle or a WiP, somehow these can even end up doing better numbers than your ebin finished piece you spent 12hrs polishing. Always answer to people interacting with your art.

But wait there's more!
>once every day, go through your #s, sort by "newest" and interact with the posts you find there.
Leave a like, retweet or comment. A simple "Nice!" or "I like the way you drew their hair" is enough, show your genuine appreciation when you feel it. If you're into the same franchise you WILL find people whose work you will enjoy. These people are your new peers with whom you will rise out of the muck of anonymity, your equals, so treat them well. After reaching out to them a few time, they'll follow you back and start reposting your stuff too.

>but anon what if I wanna do OC shit?
Find a franchise that has a vibe adjacent to your OC and spam the shit out of it. If you're making a comic heavily inspired by Scott Pilgrim, then make a ton of Scott Pilgrim art and gradually mix your OC shit in. Get it? Some of the animals in your audience won't like that you substitute their favored slop for something very similar, but chances are that a lot will stick around and eat that too.

I keep seeing anons who believe you have to draw shit you don't wanna draw to grow an audience but I've had more success drawing fun things I had a genuine interest in, I just had to do a little research and narrow it down to a couple subjects.
Do your research & go for the autists. That's all. Good luck, fellow attention whores.

Thank you, your tips seem actually useful. I like how you went into detail instead of just being vague.

>show your genuine appreciation when you feel it
I hate everyone and everything and most of all wasting time on giving compliments so I'll skip that, but rest of your tips were gold; thanks for spelling it out for me like that.
