In college it was really, really easy to get girls to model for me. They were all artists and knew what was expected so asking them wasn't a big deal. After graduating, I've only asked a few girls to model for me in person outside of model mayhem. One girl knew my work and had a friend that worked at the same studio as me and she came in to visit. I thought she was extremely cute and asked if she wanted to model. She was ecstatic to.

Modelmayhem was big in the 2010s and you could tell what kind of work the photographer did so it wasn't some scandal. Everyone I hired knew I was a photographer and part of my NDA was that no one would see the raw photos (unless they were ok with me posting them) and their likeness could be used in my paintings. My setup was pretty amateur, just a few umbrellas and a backdrop but they knew it was for paintings and not some fashion magazine.

My whole thing is sex pinup girls so that's what people see in my work. I get girls al the time messaging me on facebook or twitter "I want to be one of your girls" and they will send me sexy photos to paint from. Usually I tell them thanks, compliment them and that I might use them as a painting. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I've messaged a lot of girls myself saying "You're incredibly beautiful, do you mind if I do a portrait?" and sometimes that will lead to "Do you want to do a nude portrait too?" because girls really, really like to be painted. It makes them feel pretty. Because they are pretty.

Al you have to do is go "Hey, I'm an artist and I think you are really beautiful and would love to paint you. Here's me business card with my website and contact info. Let me know if you would be interested." Simple as.

I paint only the girls I find prettiest. Like 6 years ago all at the same time I met a german girl, a polish girl, and a girl from argentina (she posts on here even, she's a super great artist and gorgeous I did a couple portraits of her). Pic related is of a girl that sent me photos one day wanting me to paint her. I haven't talked to her in awhile though. I also have not used model mayhem in a long time so I don't know if it's still a thing or not. For a few years it was pretty big and really easy to find models in your area.,

I also use to work at a photography studio so I learned a lot about photography and working with models. One of the tricks you learn early on is to never, ever show your model one of the photos you just took of her. She will pinpoint her one insecurity (like if she thinks she has a fat arm or something) and spend the rest of the shoot trying to hide it. Only share photos that are finished with retouching and color correction and stuff like that.

Invest in a good camera. I got a nikond90 when I was in school and I still use it. Lighting is more important than the camera but it's still nice to have a good dslr that lets you change out lenses. if you want less distortion in your photos, use a 50mm. It's the closes to what the naked eye sees and is called a portrait lens for a reason.

I feel absolutely terrible about that and regret it to this day. She was a great artist too. She was just too good for me all around so yeah.

Thanks anon, I appreciate it. It's funny, because the last time I posted my artwork a crab went deep into my accounts and told me I had no appeal and my art was shit. I could tell they were clearly just butthurt but it's funny.

I have been drawing since highschool, I got a photography job when I graduated in 2005 and worked there for a year before going to art school. I got my first "real' commission in 2008 for the Beijing olympics where I designed some characters for an ad. I graduated in 2010 but it took my exactly 1 year to find a job as concept artist for EA. I worked there in studio until 2015, then did contract work for them until 2017. It sucks, because some of my best work was done for that project but it will never see the light of day because it got cancelled. I did random commissions for year and in 2019 I was diagnosed with a pretty serious mental health illness and took a long break. It really sucked but I needed it. My most recent contract work is for gameloft at the moment but I can't post anything because it's not done.

I don't do much traditional, only when I am waiting at the doctor office or something and I doodle in my sketchbook. In college, I had 4 years of figure drawing which was all traditional. I also did some figure painting there as well. At the EA studio I was at, 2 times a week they had figure drawing for all the artists that was 3 hours every session. It kept everyone fresh on their drawing skills. But now, I spend on average 8 hours a day drawing. The Gameloft stuff is only part time so I spend the rest on personal work. I would rather be working on personal stuff anyways, it's much more relaxing.

This might be weird, but what helped me improve the most is thinking of everything as if it were a video game renderer. Shadows cast shadows like they are in games and light bloom. also ambient occlusion. I do fabrics and textured things like they are normal maps.

like, traditionally? Because traditional is really completely different beast than digital. The same theories apply (color, composition, subject, anatomy, strong fundamentals) but traditional painting I found the best way to work was to do your sketch, spray it with some kind of acrylic fixative (to protect it from the next part) and do a neutral wash, like siena brown. You don't want it to be too dark but a nice mid-tone. People just starting out try to paint on their sketch directly with just a blank white canvas and a mid-tone will help a lot. It will show up even in the finished piece, it's just how light works. If you do oil, just put a blob down and use a paper towel to smear it around. Just don't use too much and the acrylic fixative will make it so your sketch doesn't smear. If you use acrylic, just use more water to thin it down and get the mid-tone that way.

After you do the mid-tone, work on your darks first. After you finish your darks, then top it off with lights and then highlights. So mid->dark->light->highlights.

I had an old sketch so I did a quick example.

Hey, I actually gave some insight into what it's like to actually work with models and how to approach people you want to paint. Basically if your work is good then people are much more inclined to be a part of it. Having a business card and carrying a few with you is important for so many reasons and this is one of them.
