So what is your stance on using references now? Do you use them? When? Do you prefer art done with references or without? How should they be integrated into a process, if at all?To me it seems as if using references is always good. If you have an image which could help you realize an idea, then you should use it. However you also have to bve able to create without reference, which can be difficult, because there is a huge discrepancy in how a drawing will look with or without refs..
>>7404821I was making a great drawing but I realized one of the hands was bigger than the other one, why? BECAUSE I DIDNT USE REFERENCES.Now I have to put all sorts of jingling keys on the thing to distract from that thing because Im not redoing the whole thing again.USE. REFERENCES. ALWAYS.Nobody will care if you did or not as long as the end result looks GOOD.
>>7404833You have to be able to draw without reference too tho. That's the only way how comic artists can draw their characters in all kinds of different scenarios for example. If all you can do is copy, then you wouldn't be able to do something like this.
>>7404821I think professional artists are able to draw a generic figure from imagination, from most angles. A generic "mannequin" if you willbut for professional work, if you want to be able to make anything interesting, you should probably use references as much as possible. not for direct copying, but for knowledge of form and visual data, etc. the combination of knowledge of structure and project specific drawings should be amazing for youMilt Kahl said in the past that Disney animation made the biggest leap forward when they discovered Edward Muybridge's photographs of walk cycles, actions, etc.
>>7404848>you should probably use references as much as possibleThere are professional artists who don't use reference tho and they are still able to create good stuff. I've heard someone saying that finding references just takes too much time. They just probably won't be able to do very realistic works but paint in a more cartoony style..
>>7404861can you name any? because it seems like even the most common denominator porn artist will look up sex poses, at the bare minimum. if you don't use references, you will probably need to allot more of your time towards studying. KJG just memorized everything, for fun, and when he worked he probably didn't need to use any references, for example with his wall drawing demos
>>7404862>can you name any?You already mentioned KJG. I've also read an interview with Trevor Brown where he said he doesn't use references. Not sure how much truth really is in this, he maybe uses references for small details, but his figures generally look very unreferenced.
>>7404867yeah, i think at some point you can get away with not using references, but at the same time, if you do that, you work will have that generic, unreferenced look. for some forms of art, like cartoony manga, that's probably fine
>>7404877Good point. I generally prefer more realistic character design, so I probably should use reference as much as possible. Some manga artists have such realistic styles that it makes me wonder how they manage to do this. They can't get a reference for every character pose in every panel. That's the problem. If you use references, then people will most likely notice when you don't use a reference. Not really sure how people balance this.
>>7404879>Some manga artists have such realistic styles that it makes me wonder how they manage to do this. They can't get a reference for every character pose in every panel.you should look up the manben episode of Shinichi Sakamoto. he literally makes his assistants dress up in victorian costumes and takes pictures for every panel
>>7404891>he literally makes his assistants dress up in victorian costumes and takes pictures for every panelKek, I haven't seen that one yet. Yea, having models is one of these privileges I probably will never have.
I refuse to use them unless I have to, like for an object I have no idea what it looks like.
>>7404837When you draw without using reference, you're actually referring to your visual library. And the best way to build that library...is with lots of references.
>>7404821If you can't draw humans and clothes without references, you're a fucking hack, period. The only time it's acceptable to use references is when you need to draw unique things like landmarks or precision machinery like car engines.
>>7404821I have a camera and a tripod with a remote shooting phone app so I make my own references all the damn time it helps so much. Also really helps me see beforehand what ideas I'm having are looking retarded or not
>>7405001you can also draw from pure imagination, if you studied anatomy enough to construct realistically- though the stylistic simplification to visualize markings is surely still referenced from the visual library, esp. if you draw manga
I’ve been drawing since last September, and I can say that using reference is great to supplement any gaps in your visual library. I approach art the same way I approach my other successes in life. Heavily relying on reference and “rules” will inevitably make you overthink things and take way more time on an illustration. Use your intuition.
>>7405196All these are no reference. Use your mind’s eye and your soul. Understand things as forms, volumes, weight, inertia. It’s how I was able to go from no illustrative skill at all to pic related in just over a year.
>>7405196>>7405204I've been drawing for two weeks this is no refs out of my head Just be yourself bro you don't even need to draw I just drive around in my sports car and imagine drawing instead of doing it
>>7405344Womp womp give up or git gud
>>7404833>Nobody will careI will care.

>>7404821I only use references to learn from. I don't copy them. Copying isn't much better than tracing them .
>>7404833>I was making a great drawing but I realized one of the hands was bigger than the other one, why? BECAUSE I DIDNT USE REFERENCES.You could mismatch sizes even by reference tho Sounds like you just didn't use good construction Before anyone assumes something fucking retarded since this is cuckchan: I use references yes
