If you had to choose only one book to learn to draw/art, what would you choose ?

For me it'll be, Cour de dessin (Charles Bargue and Jean-Léon Gérome) because it helped many old painter that I like to do art (like Van Gogh) and I learn by mimicry and copying (=/= tracing).

I don't know. How to Draw by Scott Robertson is pretty good, but I would rather like to have something about figure construction. I haven't really found a book which I like about that tho. I just want to get better at drawing figures from imagination. The rest is not really in my interest atm.

It's annoying to actually do the Bargue plates.
1. The book itself is sold out in a lot of places. Possibly out of print? Used online bookstores don't ship to third-world countries like mine.
2. The pirated book scans on the internet range from really bad to meh quality.
3. The correct plate size is supposedly around A2. Do you photocopy + enlarge from the book?
4. The Bargue plates photos/scans in the book has these brownish backgrounds. Wasting the ink, I personally don't have enough know-how to clean up the pictures. I think a B&W threshold conversion would ruin the pictures.
5. Buying ready use plates is again impossible for a lot of third-world countries. Because of insane shipping fee, duties, etc.
6. I personally don't have an easel/drawing board/empty wall that can accommodate 2 A2 papers side by side.
Of course you can just compromise, like use the "cleaned-up"
300 dpi scans of Part I that someone uploaded on the internet, or do an A4 copy, and so on.

I was a bit surprised about the situation. I thought it's public domain, and someone would have uploaded clean Bargue plates on the internet. But no such thing unfortunately.

What is the best book about body construction and anatomy? I have no idea.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/1788840445 but yes, it's pricey, even when bought used.

>3. The correct plate size is supposedly around A2. Do you photocopy + enlarge from the book?
That's a myth. The guys at https://shop.charlesbargueprints.com/en/ sell expensive replicas of the original lithographs. Plates are 44 x 60 cm / 17 x 24 in. When you have a block-in and a drawing, that's about half of that for the final piece then.

Plates were most likely never intended for sight-size though.

Printing them yourself is sort of a waste: many subtleties can't be reproduced by cheap printers. Working from a screen is not so bad of an option.

> 6. I personally don't have an easel/drawing board/empty wall that can accommodate 2 A2 papers side by side.
I'm currently doing a plate (I've done many over the years): small board resting on the desktop and laps, image from a small laptop computer screen because I can't do better at the moment, I have none of my gears.

Don't find excuses, get to work!

There are many equivalent options for "body construction", from Bridgman to Huston or Loomis. They kinda all teach the same thing.

Anatomy is too wide of a topic to be covered by a single book. Most figure drawing books cover the basics.

Loomis
There's a reason even japs and chinese only use his books in a serious learning environment rather than their own imitations

Yeah using a shitty book is definitely why you can't draw
No other reasons
