The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work. That said, everyone is welcome here.Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something). Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.Previous thread: >>7404732Some resources:/asg/, our stylistic sister-thread series for those focused more on illustration >>>/ic/asgBooks:Understanding Comicshttps://e-hentai.org/g/2042453/83e7da6ed0/Making Comicshttps://annas-archive.org/md5/d55168f7579c1e23275d1fc9f0a2255dManga in Theory and Practice: The Craft of Creating Mangahttps://annas-archive.org/md5/2877da11e2f852d220853e9944e6ea49Story: Substance, Structure, Style and the Principles of Screenwritinghttps://archive.org/details/RobertMcKeeStorypdf/Even a Monkey Can Draw Mangahttps://kupdf.net/download/even-a-monkey-can-draw-manga_58b9ca16e12e89233badd376_pdfThe Shonen Jump Guide to Making Mangahttps://mega.nz/file/i81imLpI#GcheJ9Jjk3lw1RE9nQWgL4RG4wEBNOcRmgA-iaU6WpgVideos:"Manga Senpai/Tokyo Name Tank", "SMAC! I didn't expect last thread to last through the day yesterdayso a bit late, but I managed to crank out a last second little Christmas manga
>>7414396Adorable
Drawing on my phone is a pain in the ass, so I had to go buy a notebook. I'm gonna use this time away from home to come up with some character design ideas for Sunburn
>>7414412Forgot the pic
>>7414412unfortunately thinking of art supplies, my current plans include returning some to the store
>waiting for the r/a/dio anons to come
>>7414412I don't know what sunburn is, but a notepad is the best alternative when you don't have a tablet.
>>7414598>I don't know what Sunburn isOh that's my manga/comic
>>7414630Ah its you, ok didn't have a title. Your pen/paper work looks much better
>>7414396pages are -> but panels are <-?funny little comic anyways, I loled
>>7414996I did consider trying to format it to match reading order, but I just said fuck it and left it in regular page orderfigured it would be easy enough to follow anyway
>manga making generalhow did you guys year in manga making go?what are your plans for this year?I did dismally in 2024 but I plan to do sugoku sugoi next year.
>>7415070I don't know if it counts if I only started this month but I'm attempting to make my very first comic. I usually draw by painting directly onto the sketch so I'm finding it very hard to stick to a fully monochrome format. Are most people in this general only making comics rather than illustrations or nah.
>>7414569If you're the anon that recommended coming here for advice, then I should thank you. I doubt I would have found this place by myself. I'm the anon who that mentioned that rough draft idea. I'll be lurking around but if I'm having any trouble getting started I'll know where to ask at least. For now I just need to brush up on my drawing skills and hopefully get to travel aboard for some research for the setting.
>>7415070Wrote and drew 3 stories, first store was one page, second one two pages, and third one also two pages. I started drawing manga a couple months ago. I'll have more to show by next year I'm sure. Here's a random page of my (5) completed pages.
>>7415070Went from storyboarding to actually drawing and in terms of actual inking I've gone through page 1 to page 70 (so about 60% done). Currently working on page 71; these complex panels with everyone in them interacting with one another can be such a bitch sometimes lol. At least I've got about 15 pages of a fight scene coming up tho, so that'll be exciting.>>7415150Very nice and very cute. Love her outfit.
>>7415140Glad you make it anon, yes it was me, and i hope to see your advances, and don't doubt to ask anything, will be glad to help
>>7415070>set deadline to March 2nd>finish august 15th>fail miserably on November 1st>still struggling to draw moreAt least i almost finish the new cover
If I step back now I may keep what is left of my sanity
>>7415257OMG it's maya!!!! And ta-chan
>>7415259maya is about to plap plap get pregnant
>>7415181How long are you spending on the cover? For my first 2 covers they took multiple days, each.I hate that. So I now try and limit a cover to 8 hours of drawing, not including the idea phase. And I hope to turn that 8 into a 5 some day
>>7415070It's been alright. A slow growth in readers, but some of the readers I do get seem pretty vocal and DM me haha. Here's a spoiler for February
>>7415300You shouldn't count on me for a good answer, due my phisical condition i take way too long to draw things, this cover sketch is from the last week of november, and the picture i post was done on december 18th, i had been bit bussy too and had to take some days in between to rest my arm and i also draw slowy too
>>7415350I thought those were onesies
>>7414569I'm also here but I'll be mostly lurking around. Thanks for pointing me here.
>>7415350You get dms?
>>7415350you get readers?
>>7415300NTA you were responding to - while I see what you're getting at, my personal stance is that while a slow project can with active and diligent work eventually become good, a rushed/compromised project will likely come out not as good as you wanted. If you're not under a publisher's deadline, don't kill yourself over worrying how long something takes.>>7415400>>7415410You don't? I don't have as many readers as other comics/mangas do but even I still get DMs.
>>7415424Which sites do you post
>>7415424All the usual ones listed from time to time on /mmg/. Mangadraft, Mangadex, GlobalComix, INKR, Tapas, Webtoons, MangaPlus, Pixiv, social media sites, Comicfury, etc.
>>7415431Whoops, >>7415434 was meant to respond to you.
>>7415070pretty good, got a huge spike in followers from my other art which is trafficing more eyes to my work. I also got lot of really cool reviews from random people and made new fans. I didn't get to finish my oneshot due to a lack of supplies alongside awful holiday timing but it's all good, I will catch back up with that one soon. Besides that I hit a lot of new milestones, made some stuff I really like, and have made goals to make some cheap printed stuff to share around next year.
>>7415495>cheap printed stuff to share???
>>7415502Floppy paperback magazines, printed on cheap paper. My plan with this was to do a bit of rogue marketing but also to just give to friends for free or sell at some of our local shops.
>>7415507Exactly my plan as wellWe need a Western doujinshi market scene, a convention
>>7415507>Floppy paperback magazinesFilled with various stories you've made or...?
>>7415070>wrote story>planned out panels>got 4 pages sketched>hard drive death in october>lost a shit load but not all work on those pagesI just haven't had the heart to return to the project since. Still come here every so often to lurk
>>7415257First time using screentones, I should've used it more before.
>>7415567Just have a backup somewhere anon, we talked about this with you then at the time too. >>7415568*squints*Altarusia anon....?
>>7415568Screentines are like cheating. They make anything look good
>>7415571>Altarusia anon....?
>>7415573Might as well say anything that isn't manual hatching is cheating then, at that point.
>>7415568Looking good anonSuch a shame my mc doesn't wear his full school uniform, because is based in the seven sister one
>>7415579The best uniform in the series in my opinion
>>7415547Yes? I'd happily use it to promo my friends works too if they had any. I would have had 3 different stories to round out the content but I ran out of paper ._.>>7415514We have comic con! ha. But really forget manga- I don't think we don't have enough normal american comic artists for that sort of specialized event. That's the dream though. I'd really just love to meet more comic artists in general.
>>7415070Professional career is finally taking off, but personal life started to collapse and take time away from drawing manga. Somehow it always feels like I'm racing an invisible clock to get the hell out of this place before it's too late.>>7415514You mean indie comics? There is a scene.>>7415573I wish.
>>7415628>but personal life started to collapse and take time away from drawing manga. Somehow it always feels like I'm racing an invisible clockSame here but for different reasons as I'm not trying to make it as a pro, I just might have significantly less time to draw my story, which still really stinks.
>>7415628Patreon is not a scene. I mean a place like comiket where independent creators get the spotlight instead of being stuffed away behind all the billion dollar corporate propaganda
>>7415070My art and comic making abilities improved a lot. Followers I got very few but I did some friends.
>>7415578I'm just saying that screentones have a specific look to them that is very pleasing to look at at. I wasn't demeaning that anon's work btw
>>7415640>I wasn't demeaning that anon's work btwNah no worries mate I didnt think you were going at that angle lol.
>>7415635Why would you assume only Patreon? That might be one of the worst instances anyway. Crowdfunding like Indiegogo and Kickstarter are way better for indie comics, and even anime conventions where you can set up to sell your stuff there too.The issue is that there isn't really a dedicated space for selling original works. In the west, people talk about how they really want to support small, independent artists and creators, but it rarely actually translates to foot traffic and sales. Especially since, while people SAY they want to support small artists, they're often the same people who would rather just pirate or read stuff online than actually support it anyway.
2 more pagesI need to draw something else after this chapter, I want to draw cute girls.
>>7415695>I want to draw cute girls.Another one for the mmg- Marvelous and Merry Girls- Club
>>7415657To support indie comics, there would have to be indie comics worth supportingIf all they offer is>liberal propaganda grandstanding horseshit (it's -insert superhero-, but a BLACK WOMAN!)>conservative reactionary trend grifting (EVS and his buddies)>Shallow, cheap bumper-sticker fodder (Abraham Lincoln but he's a VAMPIRE HUNTER! lol XD )>droning, boring, navel-gazing autobiography about depression and the author's dad dying or some shit>Naruto/DBZ/One Piece but badly drawn and with the serial numbers filed off (mostly south americans here)There is nothing in the indie scene that deserves money or attention
>>7414377Does anyone have a time-lapse of a manga page being made by a pro?
>>7415711True, but those are really only all you find all you're looking in is the puddle that is /co/ and reddit. That's why some sort of indie convention or some such would be nice, but how do you get people (ie: Potential buyers interested in the stories) involved or interested. The biggest problem is the first two, especially in the US, but also by extension, the west, because every single movie, comic, book, cartoon, etc. seems like it has to be vetted over whether it has some political agenda or message attached to it. That's why so many (more) people turned to anime/manga in the first place, because the East is far less beholden to those shallow political ideologies which largely exist to one-up the other side for cheap "gotchas."Your third point is whatever, and I don't think those examples are as prominent and you're making them out to be.Fourth point is mostly just the doomer, le quirky reddit/tumblr/twitter comics that are more like newspaper strips geared to a "relatable normalfag" audience.Final point....well, you could find a lot of people who will tell you that modern shounen (Demon Slayer, CSM, modern Dragonball) is already poorly drawn and heavily derivative of the shounen from 15, 20 years ago, never mind the actual amateur stuff coming out from indie hopefuls.
>>7415711>>7415728But anyway, a lot of that is to say that if there were some sort of actual "scene" for indie creators to come together for some sort of convention, or even put out anthologies or zines, or books collecting the works of a bunch of creators, that'd be cool. Unfortunately, for as many people as would say they'd like that, I just don't think there would be the turnout of readers/buyers. Stuff like this always gets thrown out there as a possible prospect, but lots of artists just don't seem receptive to the idea, and consumers on paper and in theory say they want it, but then don't actually want to buy into it.VIZ at one point in the early 2000s started bringing over the Shounen Jump magazines, which you'd think would be something kind of near and people would be into, but I don't think it really translated into sales of that type of format so they shitcanned it after just a few years, IIRC.Its like, everyone loves the idea as theory, but when someone tries to put it into physical practice, artists, contributors, and even the buyers/people interested all seem to back away for some weird reason.
>>7415711>Shallow, cheap bumper-sticker fodder (Abraham Lincoln but he's a VAMPIRE HUNTER! lol XD )>tfw that's essentially what I'm doingWelp...I'm already in too deep.
>>7415695>I want to draw cute girls. You motherfucker, you send me on a loop, now i wanna draw my villainess with her worn out suit, bite mark on her tits, pubic hair here and there, and sweaty, with drops of baby batter all over the placeHope you're proud of yerself

>>7415773take responsibility, a bow if you willthe image THAT anon put in my head is great, and he put those words out cuz of you
>>7415434>MangadraftLooks like I'm making a French version of my comic. Thanks for this anony.
datass
>>7415695>I want to draw cute girls. One of us! ONE OF US!>>7415728>>7415711There is also the underlying issue that many people are in love with the idea of supporting indie scenes/artists but when it comes time to open the pocketbook suddenly they're all skint and come up with a million and one reasons why they can't give money right now. It's infuriating since it's not like we're just sitting on the side of a roadway begging for free money, we ARE making actual products here. The ease in which your average person can just open up Twitter and the like and get virtually infinite free art via comparison really kills us here.>>7415786>making a French version of my comicYes, if you're gonna be uploading to Mangadraft do be sure to actually get it hosted in French. Don't do what I did, which was host my comic in English. French people being French people, they immediately turn their nose up at the slightest hint of English and your comic ain't gonna pull those views.
>>7415795>frogs being pretentious faggotsNothing new there
>>7415573As someone who cant shade, I 100% agree.Made my beetle look a helluva lot better
>>7415795>>7415797Nta but i hate french so much, that i started to think i was one in my past life
>>7415847Maybe you were once beheaded at the behest of Robespierre.
>>7415857Wait a minute i havee shit teeth and i like tea
>>7415578Pointilism is also allowed under the rules.
>>7415795>>7415797>>7415847I will be the devil's advocate here and say Japan is also the same but you dont hate it for doing that
>>7415876Japan earned it, what has France ever done for anybody?
>>7415882They did good things like spread bureaucracy and women rights across the wor- Oh, nevermind...
>>7415876You know what, one of the main reasons i hate France, is exactly because people often glorify liking france, but you are weirdo weeb if you like japan
>>7415876I'm half japanese.
>>7415922finally, half chink mutt solidarity
>>7415956I was raised semi racist against the chinks, but mostly towards filipinos So we cool.
>>7416051unironically how bad are the chances of making it if one is full chink, do they really hate them that much over there??
>>7415747Thank you anon
>>7415876The main difference here is that a lot of Japanese cannot read english well at all even if you did get one who didn't mind reading an english comic, whereas all the French can very easily read English but they act like they can't at all in order to bitch some more.
>>7416112It isn't impossible. Sayori, the creator of the Nekopara games and other stuff, was born in China and only later on moved to live in Japan.
>>7414377Any Americans who can answer this question? He's a Japanese animator who just recently started making manga. This is the manga he's currently working on (a short series that runs in Harta magazine every two months)https://mangadex.org/title/be2fc198-1e57-419b-976f-6c77f3adc316/gensho-x-chotsune-gensho-sosarokuhttps://x.com/waiwaiburanko3/status/1872993010436497564

>>7416178Interesting she does the feathering first, most American inkers I've seen do block inks then feather the edges
>>7416181Does it matter for the end result? Genuine question
>>7416181excuse the rotation>>7416194probably a process thing? the comic inker (iirc) said he does it so he can do fill ins and white out/corrections to the feathering in one go
>>7416207Interesting, I have a hard time with hair and clothes but I usually fill first. I will try it the other way around to see if it's any better for me.
>>7416176They do in Europe for sure, it might be even worse in the U.S.
>>7416362In America you go to your local pharmacist and purchase what you need. That is how you purchase drugs. Pharmacists are professional drug dealers. I hope this answer helps you! :))))))))
>>7415786I might take the time one afternoon or two and use DeepL or some other software to translate my comic fully into Fr*nch and then upload it to Mangadraft. Since it's a mainstream Romance language issues with translation should ideally be kept on the downlow.
>>7416051oh I was using that as a general term for asians. I'm a half korean, not chinese. When I was a teen I was talking about chinese people with my korean student friends and they had no filter, so this little petit lady just smiles and tells me "chinese eat anything". This was back in 2009, so way before this kind of rhetoric was widespread. I don't hate the chinese too badly either, i've gotten along with chinese ive known but flips are another story. The last flip lady I knew was a piece of work.>>7416160Boichi, too>>7416207I always admire clean beautiful work like this, I have never had the mechanical skill or patience for it which lead me to leaning into drawing things messy and gritty. Love to see things like this.
>>7416471Wasn't Boichi from South Korea?
>>7416479I think that's what i'm implying yes, he's a foreigner.
Being a bifag sucks, I hyperfocus on drawing hot women AND hot guys.
>>7416471>>7415922Wait a minute. Just how many hapas do we have in /mmg/?! ARE THE ASIAN JEANS IN THE THREAD WITH US RIGHT NOW? IS THIS WHY SOME OF YOU DRAW BRETTY GUD?! SON OF A BITCH.
>>7416471I'm also half Korean B)
Too mentally tired to draw at the moment so I'm instead slowly translating all my chapters into Frog and cross-comparing the results between Google Translate and DeepL. I forget just how insanely long some words can be in other languages sometimes.
>>7416617Why someone would waste time into translating something into french instead of japanese? Why anon, why?
>>7416559>it was /ajg/ all alongBlack pilling.
>>7416646Because French is a Romance language and thus it's way easier to cross-check across various translation sites. For Japanese I am going to be working with an actual flesh-and-blood professional Japanese translator who also offers minor editing/typesetting services so that all the Japanese fits nicely within the speech bubbles. The translator has already been in talks with me and is simply waiting for me to give them the files to provide me with a finalized quote (which I will do once I am done with my current chapter).
>>7416559My parents don't know where it comes from. My mom is not really an ambitious person and there are no known artists on either side of my family. My whole life i've probably destroyed more trees than a housing development with my paper consumption.>>7416585ORLY? This is the reason I set this comic (Funny Burger) in Korea (minus the demons) my goal with this was to use it as an outlet for my experiences, nostalgia, and just wanting to rep my origins. Maybe in the future I might even squeeze in some jabs at things I DISLIKE too.Eventually I want to translate it and I have made one shy attempt, because naturally i'm nervous about how correct it it. My mom is the only person who could honestly doublecheck my translations and she's ultra omega christian so she won't even look at it. This could have been avoided if she chose to teach me the language, but she didn't so here we are.
>>7416657Isn't learning Hangul relatively easy compared to the other east asian languages....?
>>7416662I can read hangul fine, but it's just one part of the language lol. In reality the part I struggle with the most is pronounciation, which isn't all straightforward. The other part is just the lack of helpful resources compared to other languages like japanese. It's funny to admit learning japanese might actually be easier once you get past kanji.
>>7416559>>7416653I think some other /mmg/ anon mentioned a long while back about being half-Chinese, don't remember who...
>>7416656French is called the romance language because it sounds like if you were gargling a cock, not because it sounds romantic you dumb fuck
>>7416744"Romance language" as in it's derived from Latin, not because it's a romantic language dude. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_languages
>>7416744Anon, romance language because its from one of the languages which emerged from Roman Latin...
>>7415711protip: your "manga" is an indie comic
>>7416763I think that anon is speaking about general trends overall, not that those are the only indie comics in existence. Even if everyone in /mmg/ got together to release their works the total output would be like a single drop of water in an ocean of piss.
>>7416181It's because a assistent fill in the blacks.
>>7416773*an assistent
>>7416657Do we have the same mother lolYour art looks dope, I love that you're incorporating so much into your comic. Being half is a weird experience, man.
>>7416657I wish we had more comics that drew upon the artists culture for inspiration, instead of shit set in 'yew nork city'.
>>7416839So where does this place japanese artists depicting modern day Japan then lol
>>7416786Thanks, I appreciate that a lot, I know my artwork doesn't come across as totally conventional, my influences are not conventional, and sometimes comes off as dated by other people's standards because I don't like a lot of "new stuff". I tend to gravitate towards older manga (Blue Heaven, Alice in Hell, Ciguatera, etc those are just some of my favorite reads)
>>7416866I'm older and don't really keep up with a lot of new stuff, so I appreciate the style. Keep up the good work.

>>7417005it kinda is when series go on for like 30 years
I have two scripts and I can't decide what to draw first, I've changed my mind a dozen times this week. One is a 40 page crime drama and its basically finished. The other is a heist comedy, it's around 100 pages now but will be over 200 when it's done. I like the longer script more and I could break it into 20-page chapters, but I feel like getting the 40 page one out of the way first would be a better idea.
Chapter 1 successfully hon-hon-hon'd. Still need to export into smaller jpeg/png files for hosting on Mangadraft, but at least the translating work is done.
>>7417120Show me some other translations. I want to see how well it worked.
so earlier I grabbed this book at the storefigured it would be a fun thing to work in quicklynow I gotta actually put my brain to use to know how to fill it
>>7417136
>>7417136>>7417156And here's one more for three pics in total to give you a sense.
>>7417156>>7417159That's honestly impressive and more formal than a lot of native speakers who prefer a more informal speech. Does the "only ones" at the bottom of your second pic only refer to women? If yes, you'll have to change "seuls" to "seules".
>>7417176>more formal than a lot of native speakers who prefer a more informal speechWell, therein lies the problem with machine translations. I admit it obviously isn't perfect but I'm more doing this just to have the second language quickly available for Mangadraft purposes than anything else. >Does the "only ones" at the bottom of your second pic only refer to women?Fortunately no, but thank you for looking out for me regardless.

>>7418157Cute thus far.>witch australiaLol
I did not work on my comic today.... but that's okay! crazy how the human brain would rather goon to porn instead of draw for half as long.
>>7418176this holiday season has been killing methe desire to draw manga is building up hard, but I'm having trouble finding the spark to make it blow upmy blood is absolutely boiling...
>>7418182I'm the same, I can't take a vacation but I don't have the energy to sink hours into drawing. Just drawing for 30 minutes or something won't achieve anything as I'd have to do redo it later since there was no flow or cohesion.
>>7418193for me it's more, I drew so much for Christmas in particular, it feels like my body is forcing me to slow downI don't feel many great new ideas coming to me, I'm just trying to think of somethingmost things I draw right now feel lackluster even to me, I just feel like there has to be a breakthrough on the horizon, but I can't find something to light the fuse...it's that challenging time in the cycle, I suppose...
>>7418176I didn't draw today either - instead opted to get chapter 2 translated. Now for just one more and then I can start the exporting process into flat jpgs/pngs.
>>7418157Fun chapter
>>7418247Thank you. It's a mix of Australia and AmericaAus-merica or Am-strailia I guess.
next year, i will start my manga.
>>7418509start now
>>7418556This. No point in waiting
>>7418556>>7418563Same way with how I feel about people who actually treat new years resolutions like an actual thing. Why do tou have to wait for an arbitrary time designation to self-improve? If you need to do something, start doing it already. Don't be fucking lazy and use the year-line as a copout to do nothing.
What do guys think about ctrl c-ing and ctrl v-ing panels? If two characters are talking and they are in the same pose during the back and forth of the camera, is okay to take a shortcut ins't it, as long as it's not too obvious?
>>7418699The same character should have at least some kind of slight variation to show "progression" in the talking. It doesn't have to be much, but you should have something there.
>>7418699If your character does not change expression or is not doing anything else during the dialogue, then increase the size of the panel and include all the necessary dialogue in the same one.Multiple panels of the exact same (or slightly different, but narratively insignificant ) panels is an instantly turn off
>>7418699>>741876100's comics did that a lot
>>7418847>that woman's face>O_O for three panelsSo lazy.
>>7418157Fun expressions
>>7418847Coincidentally the same time comics went to shit
>>7418861Not to mention the guy looks the exact same in the first and last panel
>>7415070so-soactually, not theat great.I was going to do a lewd fan comic, but my grandpas condition worsened and I had to move in with him for a few months. Can't really be drawing that in that situation, so I shelved that for now. Then I was going to draw a full oneshot for this https://www.jump-mangasho.com/award/next-generation-battle-2/ (I just wanted feedback and the mileage), but I could barely spend more than half an hour on it most days, so I only got the storyboard down earlier this month. Since I lack assistants and skill alike I gave up on completing it in the given timeframe, but that's kind of a blessing in disguise. Without the time pressure behind me I noticed everything that's wrong with it and I can now include stuff I wanted to but couldnt due to page count limit, so I can keep this on the backburner as I do some projects that only go for 3-5 pagesd at a time
>>7418699my thought is to copy paste the sketch layer, then ink each panel separately. that will give you minute differences
>>7418899This is what I do. Never full on copy pasted, but traced over. This is what I noticed in the mangas I read did.
>>7418847I thought about doing that but I didn't want to give people a wall of text for each panel. Plus, it also looks too lazy and uninteresting. When I said I was going to copy and paste and I didn't mean I was going to do it one panel next to each other like that. The characters will be sitting at a table getting a briefing of their mission. I will make each panel using a different camera angle. The copied panel would only show up two pages after the original panel I copied it from. I'm sure the average viewer won't notice unless they're purposefully looking for something like that
>>7419007I would honestly just do a full page of the table with everyone at it and fit all the dialog onto that
>>7419011The characters will be making a lot of facial expressions and moving around, so I can't do that.
>>7419015Something I've seen japanese authors do is splice a single illustration with border panels. It gives the illusion of a sequence just fine, though it doesnt work for every composition. I wish I had a handy example of this ready to post
>>7417273What a cheesy porn plot
>>7418699Only make full copies if it's part of the joke. You're making a joke about yourself being a lazy fuck.I recall Sam and Silo being the first comic to agressively use copying machines to save artist work, and it was back in the 1970s. The artist had a template he'd run through the company xerox machine and then draw/whiteout what needed changing for the joke.
>>7419145I remember some webcomic doing the same thingIt was like 4 panels with dinosaurs, and they never moved, just the joke would change
>>7419007In my eyes the biggest problem with something like this is you're just robbing yourself of experience. You get a little better every drawing and the shortcuts will add up.>>7419096I do this sometimes. Usually to indicate a scene transition between pages. Like a fade out.
So, i want to do a little extras to post and see if i can get more readers until i can post the next version of my work, so i wondered if this is like good or funny enough-alright, you are awfully quiet today+me?... +nah, is just that i keep thinking about what happened the other day-and what was it?
>>7419374These are just the page sketches, that i haven't been able to do more since i had a little re lapse on my hand+well... do you remeber the outbreak (or any word fitting for a monster rampage) of the other day?-you were there? That really had to suck+kinda, but i keep thinking about this one guy that got caught while screaming-shhh, that has to be hard, are you sure don't have ptsd?+what?! No, i was wondering if that count as a kiss
>>7418699I have a personal rule to only copy/paste the sketches, not the line work.

>>7419458Very
>>7419458Who is kissing?
>>7419458no it isnt

>>7418866csm does it a lot too
>>7419551I thought Fujimotor drew everything by hand even if it looks the same?
>>7417137drawing rough sketches for the cover on thisI think this one is the best so far, but I still gotta get more going on it
>>7418157lol I love that you went with the simple cover art from your earlier meme
>>7419607Good catch. You wanna know what's crazy is I did that as an experiment, and I got the most views from it. Beating all the other comics in the same timeframe.Compare that to tapas and webtoons, where I used the try hard cover.... which got a combined total of 5 views in the same time period.
>>7419606Sketches look great anon. You keep improving
>>7419612I think that manga plus creators count the pages per view instead of just views, although i could be wrong.
>>7419636Maybe. It's gotta be something, because there is no way I got real views here.I had more views on MPC than I had on my old comic for 11 months combined on 3 sites.I figured it was bots
>>7419589that sounds worse, but considering how little effort he puts in, I kinda doubt it
Here's hoping next year makes more sense, this year was an endless mess.https://tapas.io/episode/3389681
>>7417316Gumroad is being an ass for me too. It wouldnt let me sub to MATI.
I did the math and it seems like I'll have around 36 hours a week to draw once I get back to work. At my current speed, I'd only be able to do a page and a half a week at most, unless I'm doing really simple scenes. This sucks
How the fuck am I supposed to draw consistent environments in fantasy setting? For modern stuff finding references is easy or you can just use your imagination/visual library and common sense... >want to draw a village from different angles>what kind of buildings do I draw>how would they be located relative to each other>how do they look on the inside/how many rooms they areNot to mention bigger buildings like mansions or castles with complicated floor plans, am I supposed to autistically research and do studies of that stuff for a year before starting anything?Even scifi seems easier to bullshit my way through.
>>7419813Anon there is A LOT of movies, tv shows and video games set in a fantasy setting. I'm pretty sure you can references for it there. Read Berserk. There's a lot of good stuff there
>>7419802Sounds like it's time to make compromises! Just like a pro!>>7419813Well, go in with a plan. Don't just wing it every time. Give yourself a rough layout to work from. Use your imagination. Make unconventional combinations. Be creative.Of course, don't go too crazy, you shouldn't need super detailed production material in the same way you wouldn't take class notes in academic prose.
>>7419802bro, if that page takes you 20 hours, you need to re-examine your process
>>7419828Lol. It's called being a begginer. I had never drawn mountains before, nor snowmobiles or spaceship wreckages. Every single one of those things took a lot of researching and studying.
>>7419474Im trying
>>7419676I gotcha anon, i had low expectation for this year, hut somehow ended being worse that i thought
>>7419676Btw anon, how did you make that pixalated censor effect
>>7420026With the pixelation blur, should be next to the gaussian one.
>>7420039On csp or other program, because i was looking into filters and none got that effect
>>7420048In my program it's filter -> blur -> pixelize. And my other options are, "blur", gaussian and selective gaussian blurs.
>>7419813>draw consistent environments in fantasy settingMy humble two cents - fantasy environments seem daunting at first since you have less immediately available to rely on but it frankly isn't that different than simply planning things out like how you'd do your characters. What worked for me personally was:>look at your characters and how they are already dressed>think about what setting they are in story/universe-wise (what is the real-world analogue, generally speaking, regarding predominant culture and technology?)>what makes sense for the XYZ place that you are trying to depict (is it grand? is it war-torn? is it a personal space? is it a town square or a grand meeting hall?)>does the architectural style match your characters, like you could really see them walking around there?>and lastly, does it look at least a little interesting such that the reader would want to know more about the place? if you think the background/environment is boring, then your reader will also think it is boring as well>Not to mention bigger buildings like mansions or castles with complicated floor plansUnless it's somehow related to the plot itself or would somehow cause an average normie reader to go "wtf", I'd think that you don't have to even remotely stress about this beyond the most cursory understanding of the general layout of the place. Besides, it's a fantasy setting - unless your depiction is beyond ridiculous/nonsensical who is to say that XYZ group wouldn't build a fantasy building in such a fashion or style?
>>74196064th rough, I think this is gonna be it
>>7420085nice detail using the screentone for the girls shadows
>>7419802That's my current speed too, but not because I draw every day. Its more like I'll have a burst of drawing 3 pages in a day, and then for the rest of the week I can't even look at my comic without feeling nauseous.
>>7419813what I do is open a game or something and take screenshots from different angles, and then keep them for reference. You only need a few, and take multiple screenshots of the same angle but moved very slightly, so you have choices when its time to draw.
cover is inkedno clue how I plan to color it
>>7419813I don't know what type of fantasy setting you're going for but there are plenty of Medieval and renaissance artists who were painting what they saw. I always prefer to use this sort of stuff over videogames or movies.

happy new year/feliz ano novo I noticed this year I drew 4 chapters in total and one unfinished.
>>7420475I did 4 and a half pages in 4 months
>>7415747It bothers me how most of these streams and timelapses are just them drawing nonstop without taking any time planning or redoing things or starting over. When I draw, 50% of my time is spent staring at the composition and trying to determine if its good or not. Then the other 40% of time is me looking for references since I will never draw the same pose twice, so I'm always trying to draw something I've never drawn before. The last 10% is actually sketching and drawing.
>>7420493They already did all that offscreen, what you're seeing is a trace with the original edited out

>Get good idea>Surge of motivation/inspiration>Find out somebody already did it>Lose all motivationhow to cope?
>>7421822What's the idea?
>manga making generaltfw too busy working at Walmart to make any manga
>>7421847I won't say specifically, but pretty much every idea I had was done from 2014 to 2019.
>>7421872That's a lot of time to be making nothing. There's a bit in James Gurney's book where he says that you should take your own reference photos because if you use google images, everyone get's the same result and you'll wind up doing the same drawing as everyone else who googled what you googled. Sometimes you have to wonder if your ideas are the same as everyone else, because you're all playing the same games and watching the same movies. I'd say developing a hobby/ interest outside of drawing that you can draw upon is a good idea if you want to make something wholly original. But ultimately it doesn't matter. There's a lot of elements to a comic, as long as you're not intentionally trying to copy someone, no one's going to notice.
>>7421859Don’t give up and make it work, anon. Most manga artists have regular jobs before doing it full time.
>>7421822make it anywaysyou're never going to have a 100% original idea, the guy who did your idea before you wasn't the first person to come up with it either

>>7422206Center that shit, and vary the size of the panelsThis aint kindergarten
>>7421879>>7422079Unfortunately I didn't start making manga until 2022. I guess I just get disheartened when I see people on /a/ always saying "This is just a ripoff of X." or "This is just a worse version of X." When something new comes out.

>>7421822Squid games and Hunger games are 2 billion dollar franchises that blatantly ripped of manga. Don't worry about being original.

>>7422388Who cares what the cavemen on /a/ think. Just draw something you find interesting or fun.
how do I organize hentai manga panels?
>>7422509Fair enough, then just rip off something that mangafags don't know about.Shakespeare? Actual novels? How to kiss a girl?
Tips on black hair highlights, i can't get it right on digital
>>7422571Yes, unironically you can do that and it will be something new and novel to the medium.
>>7422606I don't see an issue
>>7422388>I just get disheartened when I see people on /a/ always saying "This is just a ripoff of X." or "This is just a worse version of X." When something new comes out.And they could be 100% right and it wouldn't matter. The original Dragonball is a blunt ripoff of many aspects of the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West. Ffs, the main character is literally named Son Goku which in turn is just the Japanese name adaptation of Sun Wukong. If anyone acts like you need to come up with something somehow completely original (and aren't trolling but genuinely serious about that) they can frankly go fuck themselves. Phrases like "nothing new under the sun" and entire sites like TVtropes exist for a reason. It's not what you include but HOW you include it.
I have given up on the idea of finishing my manga fast. It will take me years to maybe finish a few chapters. I'm literally Niggle from that Tolkien story. And that's okay. I'm at peace now...
>>7422679Then use this time to work on fundies, or to get enough cash to stop drawing with just your mouse.

>>7422778Easiest way to set yourself apart to any degree in the military sci-fi field (regardless of how MUCH sci-fi there is) is to design some cool armor. GITS had cool armor. Jin-Roh the Wolf Brigade had cool armor. Cool armor never hurts.
>>7422788I honestly don't think that's enough... I'll have to work hard on the story and characters...
>>7422769>Everywhere I look I see manga that look just like mineThat's not as bad as you think bro. Most the stuff I see on webtoons looks like garbage. If you can manage to look like an actual manga, that's a great start imo

>>7422873>I'm almost convinced this is devilishly crafted baitI thought my sarcasm was heavy enough, but I understand it's not always clear in text.
>>7422902in my defense I've seen too many people use that line with zero sarcasm, and the whole board has been flooded with newfags for a whileI'm going to drink some milk

>>7422509>You can rip off other mediums, but not within the same one and get away with itYou should engage with more fiction. Have you never seen Breaking Bad? It openly lifts a shit ton from The Sopranos and has a million references and "homages" to it to boot up to and including reusing names (Juan Bolsa is John Sack in spanish) and even actors (Jr's Doctor and Walt's being the same guy). I'd be here all day listing the similarities and they're both TV shows that aired in the same decade. What matters isn't the concept or even a lot of major story beat; it's the execution and moment-to-moment action that people care about. See also: Marvel and DC constantly ripping each other off (Clayface/Sandman, Catwoman/Black Cat, The Atom/Ant-Man, etc).
>>7424883The Sopranos and Breaking Bad are completely different premises, one simply has some references to the other. That's not a "ripoff".This is the level of media intelligence here?
>>7425003Breaking bad literally ends with Tony and Paulie killing Walter.
>>7425107Do you know what a premise is?
