Well first picture of the year, and it was a sorta redo of a pic from March last year so I decided to put them side by side.

I still have a lot of issues with the new one, parts of the pose feel a bit off and the hands still look bad, but it just feels a lot nicer looking and the gesture and proportions work better.

I still have a long way to go however but I am pleased to see my progress, though I dunno how my ability to pose/gesture improved despite not practicing it much.

what if we make a public magma where we can draw together? idk i just need some kind of way to contact you when ur actually online, can be any program. Or maybe a public server on drawpile or on flockdraw. I guess I can just talk here.

desu you're already on a good path and I won't need to teach you too much, mainly just meme advice to avoid that you seem to be influenced by, and to confidently continue doing things your own way, fk what everyone else says.

Do you guys notice wild variation in your skills depending on the day? Some days I'm fairly descent and have precision in my lines, but sometimes I can't seem to do anything right. This thing is an alien from a story I'm writing, they are eon old beings whose society has mutated so heinously they've lost all that was once natural to them. They take an obsessive interest in humans, sort of like a twisted vicarious way to feel something again. Their technological scraps revolutionize human society, and once these things are gone, it will lead humans in a similarly unnatural path of civilizational "evolution".

These bioengineers, as the humans in the story call them, are more like gods than aliens, really. Don't want to go into autistic detail here, but their very presence distorts space due to the power of their intellect exerting their will on reality passively. Pic related is an idea of their ships, or outomated constructs that hold their inner domains. They're not vessels in a traditional sense, within are pocket dimensions. Also, is the name "bioengineer" used in Alien? I don't recall that.

First artwork of 2025. I don't think I'm gonna make it bros, I'll try again next year.
I also did a study of a hand. I watched a youtube tutorial of how to study a few months ago and I don't really remember it so I proably fucked up the steps.
The first thing I did was just looking at the hand and just trying to draw it. Then I drew a bunch of lines over the hand and then tried to just draw the shape of those lines instead of the hand as a whole. Then I drew over the shape one to try and clean it up, I don't think I did very well though. I also wrote down where I fucked up like the thumb. I was supposed to do a final drawing where I only kept in mind my errors and not look at the ref at all but I'm pre-beg and a little bitch so I didn't do it.

Yeah it do. I spell it as such due to another aspect of the story, which was called Yig. Before I thought of including the tree of life and its artificial copies after coming up with Yig, and I'm linking the concepts. In my head it was subtle, but now that I'm called out it does seem pretty hacky.

>>7424081
I'm too tired to describe it in depth rn, and it sort of defeats the purpose of the story to outright explain it, but Yig is "the aspects of rebellion against what is Holy". a quick study
>>
>>7424321
Rulers are a tool. A tool for creating perfectly straight lines. If you need to create a perfectly straight line, use a tool designed for making them. If you less than perfect lines you can draw it free hand. Being able to draw straight lines free handed is a useful skill to have, both for drawing straight lines and developing your hand-eye coordination and mark-making skills.. If you rely on a ruler to draw a straight line every single time, you won't ever fully develop these skills.
Rulers can also be used for measuring. This much more quickly becomes a crutch, you should train your eyes so you can measure by comparing various angles, alignments, lengths, plumb lines, etc.
In this video, Robert Watts demonstrates the many uses of a straight edge.
https://youtu.be/Hbxk9elO2Z4?t=230

Rulers are great for architecture but when drawing characters you only use them for props or some unusual shit.

It's not that hard here is what you can do.
Do study on torso you don't need to go to big details it's okay if you know 3D shapes.

Then learn torso from reference and try to draw it, if you don't understand the shape try to simplify it into 3D basic shapes or you can watch some tutorial on it but honestly you can learn simple torso in few hours of course it's not going to be accurate and everything but you only really need to know the curvature of spine and how to draw along of it so your pose dosen't look completely stiff.

Also what i would recommend is use some 3D poser like posemy.art and just draw, rotate draw, rotate it. etc. It doesn't need to be perfect the whole point is just to get shape of torso in your hand once you get it from different sides and few poses you will be able to draw good enough torso. So don't care about clarity of lines just pratice shapes.

>love doodling and drawing for fun throughout my life, nothing serious. Just on napkins and newspapers to kill time
>even did some nautre paintings bob ross style but it's a bit pricey
>bought a tablet and got downloaded some books to try my luck digital
>the fun suddenly turns into frustration
I've been thinking of attending maybe an irl course where someone can mentor/teach me, anyone got experience with it? Generally in life I worked the best with someone’s guidance as I can always ask them for feedback directly, explain them my thought process and then have them help me unravel with what I struggle with.
When I learn on my own I just feel lost and alone with my thoughts. I could ask some friends that draw for advice, but I don't want to bother them with my stupid questions constantly.
Pic as proof. a tyranitar I tried to copy.
>>
>>7424436
If mentoring works for you then great.
I have opposite problem i need to study alone and really understand what i do and do it slowly. Thing with mentoring is i would start asking mentor probably after like i would have questions or would try to get something on higher level let's say colors so i would give him questions and then some lectures. Because it's gonna cost you money and not a small amount if he will have to teach you everything if that's even possible because you will have to draw on your own.
>>
>>7424424
this is my work where is yours?
>>
>>7424436
It might be the smoothness of the tablets surface.
>>
>>7424436
put your brush's stabilization to 50 or 60, depending on your tablet the glass surface might be too slippery
>>
>>7424436
Spend a few hous playing with most the default brushes, and get familiar with some basic shortcuts, pick a neutral color for the canvas. I find thick textured brushes to be a little easier to get started with. And please dont be afraid to ask your friends about stupid shit.
>>
>>7424437
That's why I was thinking more of a course environment. It just feels like the beginning is a herculian task, but I imagine once I would get the hang of basic stuff I can continue on my own..
>>7424447
>>7424448
>>7424459
Thank you Anons. I use clip studio paint (got it on a sale) and it's honestly a bit overwhelming. I kinda realized i'm not just learning how to draw but also how to use the tools and the tablet itself. It's some wacom one I also bought on a sale.
Should I really be pushing the advantages that something like CSP gives me? Or is that considered a bad habit? It almost feels like cheating compared to drawing on paper. On the other end it also feels different. Like, on a piece of paper I can just naturally turn it the way I like to draw lines but it feels so unnatural on a tablet.
>>
>>7424465
Limit what tools you use until you feel like learning new tools to do specific things.
People go years without not knowing what certain tools do, sometimes even regretting it because it could've made certain tasks easier.
Time spent drawing is never wasted though, find your own workflow and don't worry too much about the other fluff.
As for getting used to a tablet, just draw moar lol

So how do you guys place your references on a drawing tablet?

I drew this the other day, not particularly impressive (though it does look like the subject, sorta, I was coming off drinking alcohol too) and obviously unfinished, but the main issue I kept having was I would draw a bit, but then need to move over to the reference image, then try to copy it, but constantly getting details wrong, and it just turned into an awkward game of drawing wrong, looking at it, then looking away and drawing it wrong etc. etc.

How do you guys place your references to avoid this kinda shit happening?

You'll escape being a "formlet" if you stop mindlessly turning everything into inaccurate boxes and cylinders and frustrating yourself. Just draw like the very first drawing on the left. Start plotting down plumb lines before you draw and even while you draw, study simple anatomy so you know what forms to pay attention to and connect rhythmically, and think while you're drawing.

>>7424487
Depends on the reference. If it's something I want to copy accurately, I put it next to my drawing. If it's something like a landscape, environment, or outfit I put it on my second monitor.
>>
>>7424487
as close to the drawing area as possible, you want to beable to throw a quick glance at both, if you have to turn your head to look at another monitor or alt tab to another window or something, then you've failed.

I dont want to fuck up the proportions. If I try to make the torso longer to accomodate for more more fat then she ends up looking long like a snake.
You can get away with it from the front because big enough breasts fool the average coomer but from behind it is more difficult
>What else you got?
In what sense?
>>
>>7424558
her left hand is on backwards, the pinky shouldn't be facing the body. her left forearm is too long.

you're also pillow shading, and none of the light sources agree. her face seems to be lit up from the top left in front, her hair from the back, her right hand from the left, her left tit from ? somewhere ?, her left hand from the top right, etc. consolidate your light sources and it'll already read a bit better
>>
>>7424646
If you don't want to make the torso slightly longer, perhaps tweak head size. I still think if you're subtle enough you could change the torso length, just don't overdo it. I don't think the ass size is that much of an issue as it is to be honest, I'd instead work on the sideboob there, make them the same size or closer to it. Also remove that line at the top of the buttcrack.

This is by no means a serious attempt, it's more of a doodle since I haven't practiced drawing in god knows how long, so yeah it's shit. For drawing a semi-realistic comic however, can a semi-realistic face even be done at that size? (The head is about 1 3/4" in this pic). I am trying to avoid drawing cartoony/manga. I presume it can't be done with a full figure on a page/a pinup basically? This is 9x12" paper, I also have 14x17" paper but still. Is the only real way to draw the head much bigger for it to look semi-realistic? I haven't tried simplifying yet, which I've never tried to do before to be honest.

Yeah I got that upon second reading. In the context of the story these concepts are more tangible (yet hidden) aspects of reality, is what I meant. As technology evolves beyond the mundane it goes back to the occult esotericism of forgotten eras. Yig is not mere hubris, it is elemental rebellion against what is Holy. Yig has a counterpart which is not necessarily profane, a way to break from the cycle without malice, but I forget what its called. I'd need to read through my old notes, and I ain't doing that today.

I feel like I could've progressed 5x as fast if I hadn't focused so much on doing master studies of dead master painters, and dedicated some of my time doing master studies on comic artists, illustrators or more modern references. No use crying about it, 'tis the way of modernity. What we can do is find ways to make our art work. all I ever heard while trying to learn drawing and dropping learning it several times over the years are these "fundamentals". Drawabox, loomis, Draw Like a Sir, random tutorials etc. all talk about these fundamentals of "just practice", "simplify complex things into boxes and circles", "just learn perspective", "practice simple forms", etc. I'm tired of hearing the same things over and over and over again. I've drawn several sketchbooks worth of perspective studies, simple forms and line/circle practice everyday yet nothing ever works. I have since learned that some people are simply made for some things and not for others.

From gesture drawing over anatomy to backgrounds and values or materials or even texture to even the most basic of folds and wavy things to not understanding lightning and shadows. All topics I've spent hours doing studies on. So forgive me for I must say it, Drawing is, in fact, not something that is learnable.

Both? You can do a quick game with no talent and no resources, but the over-saturation reality is unavoidable. Do you already have an idea? Is it gonna be a VN? How long? Do you have an idea already? You could do a VN in 5 minutes , then what? Put it on Steam and get all your accounts banned? Put it on DLSITE and censor all of your images in the game? Put it as a walk through in Pornhub?

OK. I will make incremental efforts towards doing the best I can within this year and then kill myself before i turn 25 if I fail yet again. My longer term goal if I don't rope is an ecchi pokemon style rpg where you collect and battle monster girls with lewd move animations. I hope that I'll still be here to see it realized

DA is a good start for a BEG trying to put himself out there. But have into account that the problem with DA was that it was a bubble of artists talking to each other, an echo chamber. That creates artistic endogamy, resulting in the present aberration that DA is. What an artist, (who's goal is to "put himself out there") needs, is to use normie platforms like facebook, twitter (now not so much but still works), instagram, tik tok, YOUTUBE, etc. You need to interact with the consumer population if you wanna be "consumed". DA is for artists, you all gonna be doing and expecting the same from each other. Just have that in mind.

Souls? Hell? Can there be a greater hell than the one we were born into? Even if there is a God, he'd be able to peer into the human soul if he's as powerful as they say. And if so, He'd easily discern that it isn't His love or grace humans use as incentive to behave, its his power. He would know that should He ever try to test our loyalty by offering His head to us, or even if it seemed as if man could triumph over the divine, all the praises and hymns we ever sang in history would fall away to the truth, which is that man is a miserable greedy beast with no scruples.

I'm going to try and make my little VN as a sort of last ditch effort to maybe make some scraps that I can use to improve my life or just keep up with inflation in these dire times. My pain is constant and sharp. I do not hope for a better world for anyone. In fact I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape. But the spiteful thoughts of malice are a pipe dream, and I know the only comfort I'll find in this life is the cold comfort of steel as lead blows a hole in my chest in some indeterminate future point, because I'm too cowardly to do it through the head, and I'll be laying in the snow staring up at the sky, because I'll have to fly out to Alaska or another state with loose gun laws since I was in a loony bin during adolescence so it'll be troublesome to try it here. I can almost afford it today if I wanted, 2-3k for the ticket and firearm, depending on specifics.

Does drawing stops feeling like a chore when it gets easier? I think the reason I feel so unmotivated and procrastinate so much is because of how hard it still is for me to get things right. I don't have the same problem drawing easy things.

Real.
Anyways, if you want to test the waters you could get into the RPGMaker scene. Make a few (non-porn) fan games / blatant ripoffs just to see if your writing holds any weight since fans will play just about anything to get a new flavour of their favourite franchise. If they give your stuff praise then you could think about making your own plot and original characters

He's been flagged as a deserter by his govt and accepted these pirates' help for the sake of his men. LM-Rea's backstory is more complicated and I'm too unfocused atm to tell it properly in a concise way. Basically a lot of angst and desire for revenge against the one who created and mistreated her, and she joined this organization on the promise they will help her get said revenge.

Forget drawing complex things for now this will make you go only slower and actually lose motivation. Start with simpler shapes actually train traingles, squares, circles, lines then step up and go for 3D shapes and do quads, pyramids etc... this will give you a good start to actually draw body shapes since they need to be broke down into simpler 3d shapes you will learn this way much faster and you will have less struggles. Don't worry anon it's a pain in ass at start but you can learn shapes in few months then start learning how to draw different parts of body. Also don't over do it because most people draw 2-3 hours while doing studies and they will burn out and give up rather then that do hour of study then half or hour of drawing whatever you want and you will have this in bag.

The first panel shows a beginner artist holding a stack of paper. They say they've been doing a lot of studies but they complain that their drawings still look like shit. They ask if there is some secret being hidden from them.

The second panel shows an intermediately skilled artist with many more stacks of papers, piled high up to the ceiling. Instead of complaining they are actively drawing. They assure the beginner to just keep drawing and studying artists they like.

This is to show that there's no secret or shortcut, just continued practice and learning. It also shows how beginners underestimate just how much studying you need to get good.

Nothing posted here is examples of AI slop, though. If you're reliant on such superior tools as you claim, why would they be here posting? The other issue is that all the paintovers were done with a pretty good context and understanding of elements in the image, some he even changed to get a better result. If you actually knew how to draw well and weren't a stupid retard bitch boy you'd realize that AI by its very nature is random and cannot give you repeated, flexible and targeted results in a consistent style. you are in fact 100% correct. I draw a ton now because its easy and light weight for me, and comes out nice more or less on the first try so its fun and painless.

You have to figure out how to make it easier, and build using easier things (while still accomplishing what you actually want.) Doing stuff you already know is easy, and doing it a bunch you'll refine the method.

>>7425161
this is cute you should just do stuff like this. that other thing i didn't care about but this thing is nice. Maybe you need to learn to make your comics in a way you enjoy it, just like how you enjoyed making this drawing? Then your heart will be in it. Easier said than done, but its possible.

y'know i hated this one because I thought it was saying good artists have their ability because they draw a million more drawings, which is bullshit, lesser artists work hard as fuck, way harder than any good artist, (drawing is very heavy and exhausting when you are bad) but still aren't good. Its actually infuriating that they would insult our work ethic. But if its actually just saying ints draw a lot and do a lot of studies, which I mean, yeah they do, that doesn't seem bad at all, very accurate actually. I guess I didn't see the "int" arrow.

Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

you'd be going to hell even if the calvinists weren't right. Porn artists are probably all going to hell.

I can't do that. The artstyle I want my comic to have is way above my current skill level. I'm pushing myself with every panel in order to get better. I want to draw like Gamon Sakurai (picrel). So... I have to go through all this to get there.

Yes drawing manga is not easy and you basically spend drawing daily more then 8 hours.

Is just her left cheek and eye that needs some work. I tried fixing it, but it's not that good neither. Whenever you have doubts about which part of a drawing is wrong, try to guess which part it is and cover it with your hand. If you want to improve, its better to work with fun than without it. Its like how buisnesses that chase profits are better than government run buisnesses - chasing profits is intrinsically motivating to buisnesses, just like chasing fun is to artists. ppl with intrinsic motivation naturally draw more and perform better than ppl operating off pure willpower or government will. You can also see in the work when it was fun for you, and it improves the quality imo.

basically... putting yourself through shit to get to a place you wanna be might actually be a bad idea. Winning is fun, and winning teaches you everything you want to know, so It can actually be better to try win through having fun with it. Like its a bigger problem not to have fun. do u git what I mean?

however, if you want to draw that like that guy, you are probably right, his artstyle doesn't seem very fun to draw (to me anyways.) So if u wanna draw like that ur probably gonna have to draw from pure will i guess.

does pic rel have soul?

most of my drawings are practice, but I get a good idea, I find it hard to break out of study mode

I find what has soul is not focused on looking "correct" which is the case for study

>>7425865

too much detail/visual info

everything is competing for attention

use as few values as possible, saturate most of your colors

>>7426158

drawing is the hardest when you havent seen the first jump in your ability compared to when you started

if you can get through the first year or two of HATING everything you draw, results will keep compounding

so you're probably going to make it

>>7426314

improving specific fundies just takes time, even if you are exceptionally gifted, it will stake take years minimum

I was planning on doing this, just haven't been back at it for long enough to get around to everything. Been focusing more on poses and full bodies since I find those more interesting at the moment.
>its not enough to do either or
Definitely. I think most of the improvement in the quick heads came from the confidence in shading I got from the previous 4 hour study here>>7425884 .

this is the hardest part you just treat it like it's nothing
>>
>>7426376
I drew already for next thread
>>
>>7426377
Look at this >>7415559, and you'll realize it's a thread all the same
>>
>>7426379
we don't need the first 100 replies to be about OP image and how bad it is
>>
>>7426381
That seems like the problem of those anons. If they wanted a better image, they could have done it themselves
>>
>>7426379
Making a good thread image is important anon. It's too much pressure for me
>>
>>7426382
Thus I"ll leave it at more capable hands

>>
>>7426394
When did you find out you were gay?
>>
>>7426398
I'm just joking. It propably won't even get a single reply, but seeing that the last thread is almost page 11. Might as well just wait for new thread that will pop up any minute now.

It was nothing. Waiting on the timer to tick down, but if anyone wants to snipe, here's the thumbnail I'm gonna post it with. If you don't like it, you have 3 minutes to post a better one

the pose is bad, it's not you who's ngmi

Refining it with anatomical details can take hours but just getting a blob down on the page shouldn't take long, it doesn't look like the original artist ever got past this stage

Should I start learning to do shapes first and read Keys to drawing alongside with it ? Or should I jump to figure drawing and shit despite not knowing how to draw at all ?
