does it really surprise anyone that the digital art we find most impressive are just the most effective emulations of traditional mediums? What does that say about digital art? (p.s. I'm only half trolling here and I am genuinely curious if you have any insights on the matter or would like to offer a counter example of digital art that is both pretty good and not reminiscent of traditional art)

Half of what makes a digital artist good is being able to emulate what trad mediums do without effort. It's arguable digital requires more skill in that regard.
