In an artist role in a video game
I find myself drawing 8-10 different versions of every single character/armor/item and let the developer choose a favourite. This takes as much time as drawing, coloring, and rendering a finished illustration, but I do it because I'm scared of disapproval. I used to present 1-2 and it almost always got approved, but the few times it didn't it destroyed my spirit.
How many versions of a character/item/outfit is reasonable to present to a client to choose from?

1 (2 at most)
more if the developer can actually draw and isn't just trying to le choose what looks the best to him

also this is assuming he gives you precise instructions, that's what you should ask for in the first place

Not gonna lie but if you can't get over this it's gonna eat you up. Just know that when something isn't approved it's not an attack against you personally, and it's okay to miss the mark. Simply work with the director/client/whatever until you can understand their vision.
