for those of you who have actually made it out of the trenches, how would you recommend someone to find a job in artwork?what sort of skill level/ specific skills do you need?what level of output do you need to achieve?is previous work experience necessary?should you try to gain a following to make it easier to find work?about to turn 21 and in college for cybersec. ive already been practicing for a few years and im fine with working for a few more before i get an art job, but id like to plan for what i need to achieve to do so. im 2d focused but advice pertaining to 3d is also appreciated
nigga lol
>>7438280Where are we? 2002?
You will have more success doing your own thing and building your own customerbase. If you want to work in the game industry, you simply make a game and publish it.
>>7438334yes we need to invest in bitcoin and stop 9/11>>7438338yeah i dont disagree. about to publish my comic and i should probably make a few shitty games too. i just figure success with those is more luck of the draw than trying to get employed
>>7438280It varies by country, I'm not from a first world country so an art job here is basically impossible, all the "pro" artists here learn a bit of English and start taking commissions, freelancing because it's our only realistic choice. You're better off drawing yiff than with a degree here... Where are you from OP?
>>7438400im in the states
>>7438280Im an art director. As long as your portfolio reflects what can you do and how much time does it takes you and your stuff shows how versatile you are. I will hire you. -Build a portfolio showcasing pieces that reflect you skills. No anime, no furry shit, no random stuff, the whole of your portfolio is a single piece and should be CRAFTED as such.-Build several portfolios tailored to present them different a target employers taking into account what they do and how your work suits them.-Be truthful, otherwise if you dont perform as you promise it will hurt your reputation.-Use standard industry software, no manga niche crap soft. If you paint, use Photoshop.-Learn to use your software.-Social media presence is useless. Dont waste time on inconsecuential people validating you work. No employers browses internet looking for talent as if it were a catalog.-Approach your target employer with confidence. Present yourself, your work and your intentions.-Grow a thick skin, you are now a mercenary not an artist.-I dont care how much experience you have as long as you can do the job in time.-Artstation is good as a platform to showcase your work, behance too but this is mostly used by designers. Avoid deviantart at all cost.-Make youself a respectable Linkedin account and start adding people from the industry you are interested. (If Videogames, check game credits). Dont post stuff on linkedin nor participate in any discussion, your online persona must appear as immaculate as possible. Only talk to others via PM.Hope it helps.
>>7438955very thorough ty anon
>>7438955I work in film and was scouted from Instagram. You’re full of shit and your artwork is probably as muddy as this post PWN3D N00B
>>7438992You were "scouted" probably someone just commisioned some furry art from you while you post shit on IG and goon from your parents basement.Real people go after a job instead of just waiting one land in your lap.
>>7439261Spoken like a true unemployed
>>7438955>just draw things you don't care about while hobbyists make 10k per month on Patreon>always lie about your interests and bend the knee>subscribe to Photoshop for $60 per month (billed annually)>Don't build your own customerbase on social media, that's cringe!>Be confident! Give the ai that's rejecting your application a firm handshake.>I'm so professional, I make fun of manga in 2025>We don't care about your work experience (actually it's all we care about lol)>Use the ai-spammed "art" platform. We own 40% of their stocks>Use Linkedin to network with bots and other goycattle :)Good advice but like 20 years too late.
>>7439327Lol unironically how I read his shit
>>7439327I'm glad /ic/ is getting disillusioned away from chasing jobs in le industry, it's always been a meme and produced nothing but garbage
I would say the main criterion is consistency, which si exactly what I don't have. You have to be able to draw for hours daily.
>>7438280Going into "the industry" is historically a 95% chance of you dying as an artist and becoming a creatively dead husk; probably a 98% chance these days Art stops being about a process and becomes nothing more than a rigid goal with an even more rigid deadlineGo into it with the understanding that you're doing it for clout or money or whatever, but admit to yourself than you no longer care about art
>>7438955>-Use standard industry software, no manga niche crap soft. If you paint, use Photoshop.Of course you realize that many professional artists have largely stopped using Photoshop and prefer working with software like CSP and Procreate, and I say that as someone who still uses Photoshop as my daily driver. Photoshop is excellent software, for PHOTOmanipulation, but it has been surpassed as painting software by other programs with superior drawing engines. To be frank, your advice sounds REALLY great, for someone trying to get into the industry in TWO THOUSAND AND FIVE!
>>7438280I quit being an artist and went into construction.the money is much better and I have gained self respect. Those of you who think they will make a living as artists in the age of AI are retarded.
>>7438280Literally why should I help potential competitors?
>>7438955how many pictures should I have in my portfolio
>>7440458A 2-3 projects, but however many pictures you need to show those projects were completed. Like, a simple character design might only need a couple exploratory sketches, and one or two process shots. Something more complex like a worldbuilding concept might require dozens of images detailing individual parts of a scene.
>>7438400>I'm not from a first world countryI feel like a lot of people use "first world country" to mean USA. It's not like most European countries for example have that many art jobs either, they're just way too small to have that kind of industry.
>>7440458You want not only to show your skills but also your process. This shows not only that you are capable but also that you are organised.
>>7439327>>7440362If you guys have already made it. Congratz. And please share with the rest the formula of your success. If not, Im sorry you had a bad experience. As of today in the Video Games industry In the company I work Im the gatekeeper that decides who works with us and who does not. The aforementioned are not only my basica requirements but also my peers requirements.
>>7438955I will only use pirated Photoshop.Sorry not sorry. And yes I am hired.
>>7439327Based. Its so hard to give trust to these people who shits on everything that dont align on the semetic experience.
>>7438955>no manga niche crap soft>I dont care how much experience you haveI can tell you are full of shit, specially with how most profesionals are moving away from Photoshop now.
>>7438955>No anime, no furry shitclearly you don't understand modern markets. this is why so many western studios are struggling.>No employers browses internet looking for talent as if it were a catalog.yes they do
>>7441242I do so to. Never said "pay for software".>>7441248For a company, you are a tool. You will be doing whatever the AD or head designers have elaborated, you will do TASKS. Unless you climb up the ladder you dont get to do decisions.>>7441274Again, you wont be painting anime characters, only in your fantasies that scenario is plausible. For 2D Photoshop is industry standard wether you like it or not. If you dont even understand the reasons, you are still green.>>7441284Delusional, keep gooning to cartoons anon. I will be busy making money.ADs are easy to find, approach them and ask them how they go about hiring people.Be prepared, the fall will be hard.
>>7440939>As of today in the Video Games industry In the company I work Im the gatekeeper that decides who works with us and who does not. That explains a lot. >And please share with the rest the formula of your success. There ain't none. People who've been in the industry for decades are struggling to find work. Personally, I'm doing OK, but I know I'm lucky.>Again, you wont be painting anime characters, only in your fantasies that scenario is plausible. For 2D Photoshop is industry standard wether you like it or not. If you dont even understand the reasons, you are still green.LOL, I've seen long-time professionals, people with decades of experience, jumping ship for other software for the past 4 years. If you think I'm talking about anime artists perhaps you should take a look at some of that social media you despise so much.Have you considered that you might be out of touch and trapped in the past?>Delusional, keep gooning to cartoons anon. I will be busy making money.I knew who you were from the start, but you just confirmed it.
