promity to troons
closer a design 's creation process is to a troon the more likely the chance that thr design will be shite

Characteristics of Good Character Design

Clarity and Readability
The design is visually clear and easy to understand, even at a glance.
Shapes, colors, and silhouettes are distinct and communicate the character’s personality, role, or abilities.

Memorability
Unique features, strong silhouettes, or distinctive traits make the character easy to remember.
The design stands out among other characters and feels iconic.

Functionality
The design serves the story or purpose. For example, a villain looks menacing, a hero looks inspiring, and a comic relief character appears approachable.
Practicality: Details like costume design match the world’s logic and the character’s abilities.

This. Distinctly masculine or feminine. Chun-Li is a stronk muscular badass, but there is not one shred of doubt about her being a woman

I am not an artist but i'll give you my hint as a consumer.
>what's the difference between good character design and bad character design.
The same difference between good writing and bad writing, it is memorable and recognizable. It's fun and engaging.

Pic related, you don't need me to show their full image, i know pretty well who these guys are, their silhouettes are unique, they have a unique style and way to transmit what they are onto me.
But gumball? Gumball's "big chin" head can be mistaken with steven universe, it can be mistaken with sans from undertale, we also need to take into account how famous they are, which means if steven is more famous than gumball the silhouette makes me think about steven first.
Also this is another example >>7440166 TF2 characters are easy to recognize, each of them has a unique shape that ALSO makes you know when some other character from another franchise is just a rip-off of them.

At least this is how i view it. Of course i understand it's not easy to make a new style/design just like how it's not easy to invent a new dish in a restaurant, or a new machine in engineering. It's art after all, people keeps copying each others until some faggots brings something new.

Meme answer. Take a look at one piece characters. Their silhouettes are unique and recognizable, but they're still ugly.

Perhaps, i focused on silhouettes too much.
