Anyone has read any books that has helped their art improve but whose subject isn't art? As in not a book about techniques or art history but something else? I'm kind of in a need for a break from art theory and have personally found that systems or ideas unrelated to art can still be applied to it for interesting ideas, so I'm curious if any of you have any cool suggestions.

HAHA yeah for sure, that hair was drawn real quick just so it wouldn't be a bald head. I agree on the features, have to get a feel for sharp features without making it a horse face or other errors. The JJK dude looks good but I wonder if it's the face doing the work or the F1 driver neck.

I am! it just seems to stretch into everything I create
I have a great scene idea in my head, go through it, the conversation, themes, etc, then I get to a piece of paper or a computer and what comes out is like three sentences of horse shit
it's all so tiresome, but there's no option other than just pushing onwards. my mother was complaining that she has no artistic talent unlike me and my sibling, and I told her I don't have any talent either, I just keep trying and occasionally learn something and improve, and she denied it, said I can draw and she can't because I have artistic genetics she doesn't
some ppl are really devoted to the idea of talent vs skill, and while it can be tempting idk I don't want to let it stop me from doing what I want and if eventually I stumble into drawing better than that's great

Look, hun, this won’t get better. The only thing you can do is practice your art fundamentals and eventually feel out your personality and what you’re drawn to. Being able to draw exactly what you see in your head is a myth. Even Kim Jung Gi had a consistent style among his works. Anyone who says they perfectly replicate the ideas in their heads esp on the first try are probably lying for attention.

What is it with permabegs and blue period?
>acrylic painting
It is inbetween watercolors and oils regarding investment and potential.
Dont hurt as much as oils so you dont need special equipment and space.
Arent as flimsy as watercolors so you can be very versatile with them.
Get some tubs of primary Liquitex (mix your own colors) and go HAM. They arent expensive so you can experiment a lot.

Acryliques are fun and vibrant. Don't know about the price. They do dry a bit quickly for my speed, in like an hour. Which is great if you're doing layers, but you have to keep mixing the colors since they keep drying on the palette. The first time I tried oil it blew my mind that my palette was still wet after a literal week.

Like the other guy said, get Blue, Yellow, Red and then Black, White and you'll be able to make basically any color. Mixing is fun when you get the hang of it.
>>
>>7721260
Looks like monkee
>>
>>7721281
I wonder if the drying speed of acrylic will get extended if you live in a humid shithole of a house lmao, might be a bonus. Every time I bought notebooks for school or whatever they always deform into waves an hour or two in the house, they kind of stabilize later but not completely. I think they also suck up more ink because of that.

Do you construct the torso with 3 forms or 2.
I’m never sure whether to make the stomach/waist its own form or let it “emerge naturally” from connecting the ribs and hips. I feel like it’s different in every drawing I look at. It’s driving me crazy.

the upper snout and nose is too small, look at baloo for example, if youre going for a cartoon route, you should try to make it recognizeable. the eye is also way to outward and big for a bear. you could also try to make the head a little larger, the hat smaller so you can put the ears in a more recognizeable bear spot. i think the underlip being so big and cartoonish in the first place is what throws it off. just try again and make it look closer to a bear

This is great advice. It's likely the easiest way to construct anything from sight. I recommend learning gestures first, though. I've probably done hundreds upon hundreds of gestures before I started doing construction. I'd recommend Hampton as he explains it quite well. Basically, don't focus on getting it 100 percent correct, just try to capture it to the best of your ability. After roughly what is roughly 150 hours of just copying the drawings and reading the text on my lunch breaks at work, it clicked. It was boring most of the time, but I wanted to improve fast, and it worked for me.
I'm currently I'm currently working my way through Tom Fox's book on anatomy in perspective, and I'm enjoying it so far. He uses boxes and cylinders extensively. I'm at work, but here's a screenshot of my latest session from yesterday evening.

Basically, yeah. Don't just draw from imagination, that's a trap. When you're a beginner, it's easy not to challenge yourself and stick to what you know. If you need any encouragement, here's my first few hours trying to copy Hampton. I still suck, but it's better than what it was, which is most important.

I'll hope it happens some day, though it's going to take a while. Normies will normie. I believe artistic skills should be like how people treat bodybuilding. 99 percent of people don't earn a single penny from it, but people still enjoy it. Drawing should be for your own sake first, I think.

I prefer books to courses, but there's a ton of his on youtube. I get caught up in trying to follow the artist's lines rather than looking at the form i'm trying to replicate, so I don't bother with video courses until later. I chose to read Figure Drawing: Design and Invention. He's not going to give you a step-by-step in a traditional sense like Loomis, just remember that.

Brother, how will you understand what shape to make the forearm if you cover it in lines?

Try to figure it out using less lines or lighter lines then darker when you do.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w98CbYAX0N4

See how Jim Lee expresses his arms with clarity eventhough he's being a bit sloppy? Maybe switch your medium so you can be more cautious about line placement.

I redid the study from yesterday, but it still looks bad, though the pose is more accurate.

The first was done with 5 hours or so of sleep, the second with at least 8 hours. I think the second one is neater and more accurate in parts (not the breasts I completely didn't care for even making those look more convincing).

The reasons the hands look bad is this, for those who will scold me for being a shitty perma /beg/...I didn't care. I wanted to draw other things today and didn't want to spend forever on this. So I rushed the hands and that's why they look like symbols. Only have 4 more hours to draw today you see.

My main goal wasn't so much the detail or making it look rendered, but rather just figuring out how to construct the body and proportions. Hence why it looks so flat and undercooked.

I'm probably no longer going to post these kinds of rushed studies because there isn't a point, even my brain recognizes how bad these are now. From here on out I'll only post things that aren't just glorified warm ups before I draw the fun pictures. Feel free to call me GPT bro or Perma/beg/ if you want i just really want to improve but I feel I never have enough time to actually do it.
>>
>>7721602
The reason for the shitty lines is a lack of understanding of anatomy
>>
>>7721604
What I mean by the last part is...I will simply put more effort and time into the studies I share on here, ones that aren't glorified warm ups. And I'll make time to actually draw the drawing books you guys all recommend so I can actually learn to construct like Michael Hamptom someday.

it'll take a long time if you only ever draw simplistic cartoons that go after a certain "style". It seems that a lot of new artists nowadays are either impatient or think they know something other people don't and skip learning anatomy, shading, realism, et cetera.

>Maybe the advice to draw with pens is legit

When working with ink it forces you to

>simplify what you're trying to draw
>Think about the stroke you're about to make before putting it down
>Not hide mistakes in value and extra lines so much

All beginners should work with pen, it's tough at first but then so much fun because the gains can be ridiculous if you're paying attention.

And sometimes you are pretty bad at times anyway for a while even if you sometimes make good stuff. For instance, I drew this >>7721604 earlier on. Pretty awful right? Well I also drew the pic you are seeing just now (and what a coincidence it's also Hornet!). It's no masterpiece at all but still.

I used a reference for the pose. I just cared more about this pic than the boring study I did earlier. But despite that, I am still gonna do the boring studies as they help you feel anatomy more even if they are boring as hell.

Funnily I did three more right after but allowed me to start over once per study and I immediately got way sloppier. So even though do-overs are possible with ink, it seems I only naturally draw this careful if I restrict myself even further. Gotta work on having that mindset all the time.

>all beginners should work with pen
I don't really agree, and exactly for the reason you mention: you need to pay attention, and I don't think everyone has the drive to hyper focus right from the beginning. I certainly didn't
Once you've built up some confidence though, yeah sure, seems like it's an amazing training tool.

tried doing a quick study while waiting for the bath to fill, ended up biting off more than I could handle so it ended up pretty rough
still fun though

>>7721908
could be any number of factors
for me, depression and anxiety both sort of hinder progress where it's hard to focus enough and be present enough to draw precisely
also I've gotten into the habit of drawing whilst drawing a bath, and not really outside of that. I do sometimes draw in my room, but that space is so overloaded with other things that it's not a pure space for drawing, like my thoughts get knocked out of place by environmental disruptions, even passive ones. same issue with writing
ultimately I think it boils down to needing to dedicate a time and a place to do the work of drawing, while still letting myself doodle outside of that
that way I'd have a place for it which should improve focus and the creative flow, which I'd also want to do with writing
problem is, I live with family and have essentially only my room in terms of places to do things. might go to a public library for writing, as long as nobody is reading my stuff over my shoulder I'll be ok
I wouldn't want to draw sadomasochistic gay romance there though
>>
>>7721891
I thought you were trolling at first, but I see what you mean. I definitely messed up the perspective and proportions.

i always draw in pen lately (shown here, though these suck lol due to being drawn without any care and my pen dying)
unsure if it's helpful or not. i do think it forces you to think about contours more and forces you to accept mistakes but you need to not get as accepting of your mistakes as me lol
also with ink pens use multiple, one of my biggest issues is because I only have thin ones atm I can't really utilize line weight

>the drive to hyper focus right from the beginning

You don't need to hyper focus in the beginning. I guess I should've said All beginners should have a period where they work with pen. Not from the start.
>I immediately got way sloppier.

I'm the opposite, I usually learn from my mistakes, I usually come in over confident and jump straight in it only to be humbled by my skill level, which makes me stop and think about what I'm doing. You ought to have some basic observational skills (establishing landmarks, basic knowledge of proportion and knowing how to use plumb lines) in place before using pen. The problem is people hiding behind chicken scratch or erasing so much the paper is peeling. Refining is ultimately what you will do in art but ultimately it's about communicating ideas clearly using your tool of choice.
>>
>>7721932
eh I fucked up the eyes on every figure because I was drawing too quickly without thinking and a bunch of other stuff haha, an issue with drawing with pen is you can't correct your mistakes so if shit turns out wonk, it stays wonk

The lack of patience can be from upbringing. Being hyper stimulated all the time can warp your brain to be impatient. The good part is you can train your patience, the bad part is that it will never feel great doing so. I haven't figured out how to not get distracted, seeing how distraction is the best solution for being patient.
>>

>>
>autist
>artist
hmmm
>>
>>7722049
How do you train muscles?
By putting yourself in situations where patience is required. You get the dopamine hit for actively doing something you never do. I usually do it with lines at stores, I despise waiting in line and will go home empty handed if a line is long enough. Doing it there made me realize I can do it in other areas of my life where it's required, but the way I do it is distraction, endurance while doing a task also uses distraction but usually it's seeing how much I can do in an alotted time or how much I can refine something.

How long do your works typically take you?

How do you get faster? Or am I just getting 1-shot by social media and the "rkgk" and "just a lil 15 min doodle" type posts and only freaks are fast?

When it comes to speed I don't know what the hell I'm doing wrong.
It's like at some point I just become blind to how much time is passing.

I had a warmup today that I hated, so I forced myself to put together something that I liked the look of. That took like 40 minutes to get the base sketch down. Then from there it's just refining it, adding in more detail, etc.
My -plan- was 3 characters and a background and now 7 hours since I started I'm only kind of refining character #2.
I'm having fun with the process but I feel like I'm so goddamn slow. The fun and good feelings I have just get crushed from that.

I keep hearing that "mileage is what matters" which I get it, I have for a long time
>want to get better at art
>just fucking draw and don't be a midwit
But far as mileage goes it feels like I'm just puttering along at 10mph while everyone else is on the highway.

Some people really gotta work for it, some people are total freaks. A shitty sketch takes me like 50 minutes but that's just if I'm aware of a time limit. Then as far as a sketch being "right" goes it just depends on whether or not I'm familiar with things.

I think the mass reply anon and the permanently retarded anon fucked off because anon wounded them fatally by pointing out the thinly veiled attention grabbing attitude of the former and the poinlessness of the latter's bitching. I've found out that this way of practising multiple drawings of the same reference to be quite helpfull. You notice little mistakes in previous drawings, and the general flow of the drawing can be applied to later drawings of the same subject. I'm also far less likely to give up and sulk about my beg status, so I'll probably continue to do this.

Eternal Beg here,

How do I add more values and make the colored things look real?
I mean, they look fine under flat lighting, but when I try to give them some volume or make them look more realistic, they just end up looking flat and muddy.
I’ve read a few painting guides and learned some things about color and values, but I still can’t figure it out.
How do I add more volume without making it look off?

I'm a beg at a similar stage too, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Value, from my understanding, is really just a way of describing or emphasizing form, since every value is essentially a discrete plane change. If you don't understand the underlying form, you won't be able to meaningfully apply values. Your drawings really aren't that bad, but they are ambitious and expose some of your weaknesses in form.

For example, the two boxes are not in correct perspective. If you can't nail perspective of basic primitives, you're going to struggle with the infinitely more complex forms of human anatomy. I'm not saying autistically draw a billion boxes like drawabox, but it might help to understand and focus on the underlying three dimensional shapes, drawing them from multiple perspectives, and then accurately capturing the contours before focusing on values and color. Once your confident on accurately capturing form, then spamming value studies seems like a good use of time.

Looks a lot better, chicken scratching is using short, hesitant strokes; in a messy sketch you can tell the artist knows what he's doing because the "mess" comes from dynamism/experimentation. Chicken scratching is ugly because it's the signature of the unskilled, a messy sketch otoh can be very appealing (your first try was not, anyone telling you otherwise is sabotaging your growth)

I've finally escaped from Silksong purgatory and can get back to the grind.

I decided to do some back anatomy study today, but got kind of distracted. I ended up fixating on cross contours and form. Then somewhat arbitrarily added some shading.

It took almost 2 hours, so it's a really inefficient way to study anatomy. I could have done 4-6 normal studies in the time I wasted, but I had a good time. I guess I'll do more back studies tomorrow.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to digital coloring, what's the fastest way to lay flat colors once you have a readyish lineart? Just playing with tolerance to see what level covers all those little I guess semi transparent spots surrounding the lines? The laso fill tool? Btw these spots, which I guess come from the softness of the brush, also appear when I'm using brushes with 0 softness and 100% opacity/flow such as the faux manga inker (not this one though)
I'm using sketchbook, if it makes any difference

If you have super clean lines then bucket tool but generally people just fill in flats manually in whatever way they find comfortable. Some do a pass for the whole character first to make sure there won't be any gaps

I see, thank you, it's basically what I tried to do for my first couple of colored pieces. I guess it comes down to choosing between being clean and orderly with lineart from the beginning or paying the time toll later anyway

Yeah a lot of the time very clean lines look kind of dead so people leave gaps etc for a better impression. One trick you can try is doing a magic wand selection of the canvas around the character and then inverting that to quickly get started

i considered getting one of those figures for the longest, i am not sure which ones are the best because i always heard mixed reviews
>>
>>7723684
They're either equivalent to 3d models or worse. The joints can be very finnicky and fall out of their pose, you need either a stand or hold it yourself for a lot of poses which is annoying, and trying to get pictures from more extreme angles can be tough.
