Not really an artist, but on a whim a little while ago I drew shitty picture of Xiao from Dark Cloud for a /v/ thread, and then today did it again just to see if I could do it better since she has like almost no fan art anywhere since her game is old and obscure now. I had the hardest time with the shoulders, collarbone, knees and arms, it's really hard to keep them in proportion so that one isn't longer then the other. I spent a lot of time just cropping hands feet and limbs and dragging them around to make them look a little less fucked up. Regardless I'm pretty happy with the improvement from the left to the right, but I'd like to know how some of you guys figure out how to build those parts of the body, be mean I can take it. I feel like I'm just going to keep practising drawing Xiao cause her design is pretty simple, but if I can help it I want to make her look more like how Murata draws Tatsumaki in OPM then the loli she kind of ended up as on the right. I don't have the skill to make her body more defined.

I took a crack at the closer foot. I'm just a beg and this is my first attempted redline, but I've been studying legs and feet all week, so I thought it would be a good exercise for me.

I made an earnest attempt, but this is a really tough foot pose without a reference. I'm still not happy with the external side plane, but hopefully this is a useful starting point for ya. I'm sure there's a footfag around here somewhere who will instantly spot the issues.

Gonna do that later, or used limited values. This is just a small piece so I don't want to spend too much on rendering/colour and focus more on the ink to canvas. Thanks for the opinion and tip on the crossing. The designs have them pinned to the characters back but for the sake of coherency I'll cross em.

How do I observe fast and correctly? I can't get the gestures' proportions correctly. I just randomly see and draw but this doesn't work I think. Should I try counting with head units and drawing grids?

>how do I observe fast and correctly

Add life drawing alongside to what you’re already doing. Doesn’t just have to be humans, just practicing observing from life regularly and your observation skills with ref images will skyrocket. Also, try focusing on larger shapes first such as the rib cage and pelvis shape. You did good with breaking the limbs down into simple shapes and forms but the torsos need that attention too because it’s easier to connect the limbs to the torso once the bigger shapes are established

You learn by doing new things and challenging yourself. "You just need 'draw' for 10000 hours and then you'll be a master" is a begtrap. It's hours spent learning and challenging yourself that matters.

Lines and geometric shapes are useful to train muscle memory... for a few days maybe? You need to actually move onto other things if you want to improve. You're trying to master writing by doing animal flashcards.
>>

Trying to "cheat" out line weight. I'm using krita. Is there an option or tool to make my brush cursor snap to a lower layer opaque sections? Like how you can make the brush snap to perspective grids but rather to my plain linework layer. For me it's a balance. I try to consistently challenge myself, but if I only challenge myself, I'll start to lose motivation and can burn out. If you're feeling motivated/confident, do something outside your comfort zone. If you're a bit demotivated and need a break, do something fun that builds confidence. I don't think it's a case of all of one or the other. Doodling seems like the most productive way to deal with hitting a wall I can imagine.

>Finally give up after years of trying to control my jittery-ass hand and go for MS paint
>Can just make blobs of color/lines that are too thick and carve out the correct shapes/shave off the dogshit from the lines
Why didn't anyone ever tell me about this? You can literally just do whatever and it's fine. And using a trackpad or low speed mouse takes away all that stupid fucked up hand nonsense. I feel so happy, man. I don't even care if it looks a little crusty, I'm just happy to be able to make something that doesn't look entirely like ass.

It might seem a bit odd, but it will help you differentiate between muscles. Otherwise, your brain will try to cheat you and smush the details together. There are different versions of the same book. If it's just a one-off, I would wing it, but if it's too complicated, draw it to the best of your abilities and move onto the next one.

Thanks. I want to produce short form indie comics some day, maybe in a year or two. I'd also love to be less reliant on construction and my design skills are pretty rudimentary at this point in time. Those things are a whole other skillset. For now, I just really like to draw stuff, and it's only become more fun the more my skills compound. Lot's of transference revelations. Drawing a foot can help understanding hands, and a dog looks like a wolf. Inorganic forms are my bane, though.
