Last time, Anon told me my lines were very shaky and I should focus more on that. I've been practicing my line work, and I also want to start shading. I'm sharing the sketch here before I ruin it with shading. I also hope you can give me some advice or pointers on what I should work on more.

the eye placement is a little off though. Personally I also prefer when the nipples aren't fully detailed out. - But that's just personal preference.

these are basically old master sceneries, depending on where you are at grinding bridgman can be a starting point. Old masters generally almost all studied from greco-roman sculptures at some point. So bridgman is right up that alley. try to get into painting from life as soon as you can starting with simple still lifes like the clichée fruit bowl, waterjug or statues.

Just put the pen down and do random shit, or do figure drawing without thinking much of it, or follow a course where you copy wtv the guy does without thinking much
Not needing to think much is really the big idea here, since it'll get you to start drawing in an uncomplicated manner, and then you get motivation for more complex stuff

Yeah you did, I agree that you should draw for yourself, just give yourself a healthy amount of leeway to fuck up and a certain amount of curiosity to correct mistakes, even if you can't spot them at first glance or after a week. That chart is very useful thoughever, and I'd recommend keeping it in mind while drawing your characters, in your case keeping the construction lines visible and not letting hair get in the way would be useful. If you have an OC doing the head rotating exercise would be good to make you think about the form of your character, as if you were imagining a 3D model of it.
Here's a video on hair, maybe it will help you.

you just need to match the angles of the limbs to the original more closely. the arm shoots straight out, and you have it angled down. this means the knee can't be placed correctly. the legs are also basically in like a full splits type position so they should flow in one straight (ish) line essentially, until you hit the knee.

Fair. I was thinking it was measured along these lines too, since I've seen artists intentionally draw shit styles and gain more notoriety despite being far more talented (Picasso) or artists that I've seen countless times fly under the radar yet seem to have mastered everything I aim to master. Insanely talented people, yet nobody mentions them EVER. picrel is from an artist (You) probably have never heard of, which breaks my fucking heart.

why not now? even as an advanced artist, there's only so much you can do and practice within 15 minutes. even if it's once or twice a month, doing longer studies are a good way to allow yourself the opportunity to more fully realize what you're capable of and see what you know, see where you run into errors, and where you can (additionally) focus on for improvement.

By the time I get to drawing the hands and arms I realize that I fucked up the torso which means the hands can't be positioned right without fucking up the proportions of the arms and everything is just fucked
>"that's why you draw gesture beforehand, to get the proportions right!"
It doesn't fucking help because I can't tell if the proportions of my squiggly lines are actually correct before I actually do the whole rest of the drawing
>"just gotta practice more and feel the form then!"
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>>
>>7817250
I usually see it when it is like "omg the mangaka drew this face and it is like this stock image, the details are the exact same! So it is bad, despite it not being a trace"
Or there was an ad recently with an anime girl holding a wicker bag and everyone frealed out because it looked obviously referenced pose and outfitwise from a different non-anime a that came out at some point. They were not mad about the lack of originality, they were mad it had a reference
Or seeing people go "hmmm this picture looks a lot like this other picture" and will show it near a reference pic, and it is obviously not traced but is obviously based off the pose of whatever photo was found to be used, and then that artist will be accused as if they are a tracer
Are these like not scenarios I should pay attantion to, or it is okay? I want to be able to have reference images show up in my speedpaints and not clench my asshole autistically finding a way to edit out the ref image or not ever use them in speedpaints
>>
>>7817293

>>
>>7817293

Actually knowing that your shit is fucked up mid drawing is a good sign though and if you're keeping your sketches loose and don't go into details too early you should be able to adjust or redraw certain parts of it to fix it. Even pros make small errors and adjustments during the thinking phase of a drawing. Just watch any timelapse video and you'll probably notice them shifting and redrawing things.

I want to be able to do it all trad. I know it's possible, I've seen great trad artists do it. I'm willing to put in the work until I get there. (Of course even the best artists still make mistakes, but the best ones are willing to just erase a whole head or body and do it over when they see it's not working because they draw so fast anyway.)
>>7817301
Yeah, I just need to keep practicing until I get into that fluid mindset where the mistakes don't bother me because I'll have the confidence and skill to be able to correct them.
>>
>>7817392
It's not about learning, it's all about expressing your artistic voice for whatever reason you see fit. People out there throw random splats of paint on a canvas for fun and call it art, and other people buy it, but they don't buy it much for the "artistic skill", they want the larping experience, they buy the easy "fun part" of being into the "art world".
Why would you stop yourself from having your own fun a whatever level you are?

Never seen a guide on how to measure proportions that wasn’t a) complicated formal perspective that very plainly no one actually uses, or b) “just eyeball it”, but if you have actual actionable advice then I’m certainly willing to hear it.
>>
>>7817417
>just eyeball it
Is simply the best advice tbqh. It'll take time but you'll get close enough that no one cares anymore.

Eyeballing is the way to go, use your fingers if needed no one will care or know and or just make some proportion marks
>>
>>7817417
It really isn't that complicated. At a certain point, it really is:
1. Compare reference and drawing.
2. Fix differences
3. Repeat

As a beginner, you can do things like plumb/level lines (IE, finding reference points directly above or to the sides of another reference point and making sure your drawing matches), checking the angles between features, making sure the negative spaces match the reference, and literally just measuring the sizes of features.

You'll quickly stop needing to manually measure things out and you'll just start seeing the differences without the tedium. This is what people mean by 'eyeballing it', but if you don't have a lot of mileage drawing, you might need to do the actual measuring for a bit to develop the intuition.

That's what I generally do yeah. I'm studying faces as of current still, it's why I actively try to never do a side profile or front facing head since then it'd he too easy and I wouldnt apply anything I learnt nor learn something.

The belt things clinging to her body while she bends over like that look really weird, as if they're painted on her skin. When she's standing tall I'm assuming the belts are taut and up against her body and thighs, but when she bends over the distance between her thighs and wherever those belts anchor to her body reduces which causes slack in the belts. You'd expect the slack in the belts to hang out in front of her body in some way but instead they're running along the surface

Keep in mind that the belt and buckle are 3d forms too. For the belt you may want to add some lines to indicate the thickness of it. The rest looks good to me, the forms are clear and her pose is convincing and appealing

Forgot this website had a board for art. Been somewhat serious about learning to draw for about a month now, not really done much since childhood. Just been drawing from imagination and with reference images and was getting frustrated by the difference between what I drew and what I had wanted to draw, so I got a pdf of The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (or TND on the Right Side, for short) and did the first few exercises today. Not going to post the self portrait because I'm a paranoid retard.

I'm liking the drawing upside down, all the pseudoscience psychology (but I repeat myself) asides. The picasso actually made me frustrated and I thought I was doing shit, so I rushed the stuff above the hands. Imagine my surprise when I turned it over and the stuff below the hands was actually pretty accurate. The knight was done much quicker and wasn’t remotely frustrating. I didn’t feel like finishing the legs because I was too afraid of wasting time or messing them up and I liked the half-done look. Realise I should probably overcome that instinct.

Any advice on spotting mistakes before it’s too costly to fix them? Happened with the knight, realised too late that I’d messed up the scale of the horses chest and head and the angle of the knight’s left leg. I’m guessing this is just something I’ll get better at with practice.

Also would like to hear what people think of TND on the Right Side, is it any good? I think I’m going to stick with it but would be happy for recommendations on other books. Probably getting ahead of myself but I’d think learning how to draw anatomy with foreshortening without an explicit reference would be most useful.

These are really nice! The contrast of the evergreen trees on the right and deciduous trees on the left is interesting. If I had a nitpick, the wiry branches between the deciduous trees in the foreground don't seem to connect to the tree in a way that makes sense, compared to the ones at the edges. Maybe it just needs one more thick branch to break it up?

Thank you for the advice.

I feel I need to get better brushes for painting the deciduous trees. I find I mess them up when I paint them but I just need to just do the work and practice. I fell back on ink silhouettes for them. That is one thing I do like is the contrast with the result.
I did go way overboard on the branches.

I looked around and did not really find any other nature boards that fit landscapes in art form other than the photo boards

You don't "understand" gesture, you just flow into it after grinding through a million of dynamic pose references. It's like learning a language. If you don't know how the human body is built and how it moves, then you can not understand how to express movement. Gesture is one of the worst beg traps along with render.

Ngmi
Also lately I have found myself quite enjoying stuff that is scheduled by the author be it courses or books so I can just do a little bit of that every day and see improvement. It is great fun. Also I am seeing massive gains from learning about and trying to employ perspective related stuff and to be honest one of my biggest goals is to properly be able to think of drawing as just 3d rendering but laying it down on 2d. So should I try to take a perspective course considering this? I think it'd be extremely boring but the benefits (being able to do anything at all while it seems 3dmensional) motivates me an absurd amount. I think I should do it but then I'd be definitively handling too much info at once and I'd have to cut courses n books or spread them potentially too thin..

Yap. Recently I realized, I don't actually feel bad at all about others drawing better than me, if anything it motivates me and that's been true for quite some time now, but when I have people I've personal grudges with doing literally anything which obviously includes drawing then that causes a lot of mental trouble related to my art capabilities. I can't lie to you I'm honestly happy with my progress for the timespan I've been drawing now and I couldn't feel more excited to keep it going and keep improving and i need to just cut off anything that like messes up my mental and puts me out of focus. So 4chan has to go yes or yes basically. I think as long as I have a good enough and adaptable enough schedule for what i gotta do daily and keep myself busy with it next year I'll get some good gains and live a better life. Doesn't feel great in a way that I have to stop talking to people in general though because I now realize genuinely the most productive, stable and happy periods of my life are just when I'm completely alone in the zone doing my think and just thinking about doing better than yesterday and keeping it up. You know before this drawing stuff I managed to memorize like 1200 kanji and 3000+ words in just like 3 something months from 0 when I was just alone chilling and stuff. So I'm gonna do that again and keep myself on the right track. Ok blogpost session over now I post tomorrow when my decision making iq is low at night again okay bye

The most inprotant thing when it come to gestutre is that you must grasp the nature flow of the. It flow like a river. You can post your gesture drawings and i'll try to help you with them :)

Who are youu studying gesture from? Hampton or Villpuu? to be honest, I can't see the flow of the body in these gestures at all. Do you watch the teacher gestures demonstration?

Gesture can be dirty and ugly, as long as you can get the flow and over all proportion of the figure
1. Initial gesture using line and contour
2. continuning to clarify the gesture using brackets
3. continuing to crarify the gesture using overlaps

Gesture is a beg trap imo. It's for people who have been drawing for a long time like myself. I draw for like 4 years without even know wat a gesture is. Gesture is a mean to an end. Don't be afraid to makke ugly gesture.
>>
>>7819376
You're supposed to build out the cross contour of the body along the figure which is another way of saying constructing 3d forms. What Vilppu doesn't teach is following the outside contour of the figure, ie as if you were tracing the model. You can do the latter if you wish of course, it literally doesn't matter as long as you find a way to preserve the action of the figure in an appealing way.

Rounder faces tend to be cuter.I also tried to reduce the amount of hair going in every direction and make the hairstyle more compact. Feature placement is important like ears eyes and so on, hard to look super pretty&cute if the face is off. Don't know if going cross eyed was intentional but it didn't feel like it was. There are certain eye shapes that are just naturally cuter due to being big and round instead of rectangles/triangles.

it's personal preference. try each separately and both at the same time to see what you like. i like using both but with low flow (density) for sketching, good for rendering too. very low for the subtle stuff.

if what you mean by cute is kawaii type of cute, i was reading lack's book recently and according to him one thing that can help is to place the face features on 1/3 or 2/5 of the head, i think it's pretty extreme though so adjust accordingly, also what's with the quadruple ears haha

Baki is a good reference, but you'll have to tweak and simplify details (or entirely discard some, specially the faces) to reach the desired appeal. Fist of the north star figures are cool but too stiff, Jo Jo figures are great for gesture appeal but not masculine enough.. For faces stick to the yaoi style. If you can mix all of that together I think you can get a great result.

How do you draw cheeks?
>>
>>7820151
since you're copying from a reference just look a bit more at the reference you should see what you're doing wrong.
that being said, I think a big part it is the proportions/placements of the rest of the face are a bit different than your reference. I think the top of the cheek is too long, and you're making it protrude too much given the reference.
my advice is to keep drawing lots and lots, you'll develop more of an eye for these sorts of things. Another piece of advice is to look at your reference MUCHLY and really try to absorb the SHAPES and CONTOURS into your brain. it won't be perfect at first but you'll certainly notice an improvement.
