Worked on this some more. It was a bit of a slog but its sharpening up.

Had to reduce resolution to be able to post
I blame canada for this,

Feel free to critique, repaint, modify, mock, meme , reference, photoshop, photobash, or whatever you wish to do with this.or to this.

Her expression doesn't fit the mood, feels like something surprised her.
Also this seems ambitious for the quality of the drawing, tightening up the linework would help your image, but also make you more responsible for the detail and perspective in your BG.
It seems good as a starting point to a more finished piece, although being honest I don't find the situation or place that interesting at the moment. Maybe consider using some of the BG to the right as a place for resting the eye, normally using a clean sky would be a decent starting point, but for the tone of your scene (I'm thinking combat, danger, or skirmish) you could use some darker tones, maybe some smoke to imply there's a battle happening around them.
Just throwing some ideas, do whatever you like.
>>
>>7827614
Thank you for the critique. I really do appreciate it.

Unfortunately I did not make it clear. Im still working on it.

The quality is a little joke of having to downgrade the resolution. 99.9% of time it effects nothing just a bit of an annoyance

>Not finding the situation interesting

Fair enough. I tryed something , maybe it works, maybe it doesn't , seems like it didn't this time.
as i (hopefully) get better, i will (hopefully)make more interesting scenes
Hopefully.
I hope

Spoilers ahead??? I think.

I was thinking that the background be an abandoned ruin of a fortress or something like that.

And nobody came prepared for a potentially lethal encounter.

The ork taking an agressive threathening pose armed with a rock, and a wooden (and hefty) window cover (need to add latches and rust, wearing a pot as a helmet (i need to pronounce the handles, i seem to have painted over them , oops) trying to scare off the intruder.

And

The axebarian not expecting a shrek with arms the size of her torso jumping out of... nowhere. They are on a bridge where could he have hidden,
in retrospecti didnt think this through.

I was scrathing my head about what to do with the right side. A simple sky with a bit of a subtle gradient ought to work. Thank you for the suggestion

It was a slog because i was trying to get a startled pose while the character is prepairing for a swing. Most my instincts had me going, duck the head and show agression. But i liked the original idea so i spent too long trying to get the pose to work intead of just. Making her angry.

I see, taking from this
>And nobody came prepared for a potentially lethal encounter.
It'd make sense she's surprised, and that's partly what threw me off a bit, it'd make sense if she had her back turned to him, or she hasn't pulled her weapon, as a sign this is some sort of ambush. I guess it's a matter of timing, there's only so much you can show from a single character in a single frame.
I thought perhaps having a 2nd character to communicate this "surprise" or "shock" could help sell the idea, like a mule/squire being shocked as he lacks combat experience, while the axebarian seems more composed with her eyes wide open but already in the middle of a swinging motion, similar to yours, but with a little more force behind both her arms and a bit of a wide open, focused and with murderous intent, something out of pure reflex and survival instincts as a warrior.
There are plenty of possible interactions, like the ork grabbing her arm with his other arm ready to smash that rock on her head, while she's holding her weapon ready to counterattack, some of these interactions will keep you guessing based on timing, is she surprised? is she reacting? is he about to smash her head? is she gonna die? all of those scenarios can be depicted in a certain way. I think it's harder to try to communicate more than 2 at once, that's how I see it at least.
Also, here's an example of color palettes affecting the mood for a single scene, I think it helps keeping that in mind for context.

if i did that, id be drawing something i don't care for, and would be 10x more lazy. if you want to do something different, it has to be something different that you love doing, or your heart won't be in it and you will just waste effort.

at the time, i was struggling to make anything i liked at all, because it lost its soul, style, and charm, and looked too proper. I couldn't draw with love. imagine if you accidentally and automatically just started drawing in a style you hate all of a sudden, and you didn't know how to stop, your heart wouldn't be in it would it? it would be painful, you wouldn't even want to do it anymore, that is why i am trying to get back to normal, i want to draw with love and focus and skill again.

you're supposed to play to your strengths, its retarded to try play to your weaknesses. that is the worst thing you can tell someone. there will always be things you can't do outside your comfort zone, focusing on only fixing what you're bad will only exhaust you - and many things aren't meant to be fixed, just avoided. the whole magic of improvement comes when you focus on what you're good at, not exhausting yourself trying to fix everything you're bad at.

Instead of trying to fix your limitations, embrace your limitations and work within them. Try to build your drawings out of the things you already know how to do well, and shamelessly avoid the problem areas and things that give trouble. im telling you to hide the hands, and do the easier pose, and if anything is annoying, run away.

If you restrict yourself to only drawing what you know (what I call "staying in range") this will of course... force you only do what you know... which is very limiting and annoying - thus it forces you to study how to know new things, so that you can finally be allowed to do them again. I don't want to have to hide the hands, but im not allowed to do them until i find a way to make it easy!

The difference between this method and the normal way is, you don't waste effort doing things you don't know, or uselessly use a bunch of refs to fill gaps in your knowledge learning nothing. instead, you very intentionally try to learn new things from memory so you can be able do them with such ease. you stay in your comfort zone the whole time and have fun while you improve, its not hard to imagine how a naturally enjoyable process could be far more effective in practice.

in other words, its good to stick to your comfort zone - or as I would say, its good to stay in range of your ability, and stick to what you know.

it does! if you look at this video, you'll see my drawing didn't take much effort, and came out right basically first try. I did it from memory with no guidelines, in 2 mins 20 seconds. it was fun and not a horrible struggle like it used to be. the big benefit of my method is that it makes everything so much easier. I can draw a lot more than you can, because my process is painless and light, and i actually enjoy it. (well, besides recent problems making things awful.)

you want to say im shit, but try compare to me to the old me who stagnated for 6 years, back when I did things your way. I was so heavy and clumsy, winning was pure chance. I could only make like 1 decent drawing a month. then i rapidly start improving when before there was never anything - it was clearly my reforms in thinking that lead to my improvement. I'm not giving you meme advice right now, i really am just telling you stuff that got me out of the hole, these are hard won lessons.

>>7839301
every fundy grinder hates drawing and is miserable and worn out, and you want to say this is something enjoyable and effective. okay buddy.

https://voca.ro/1kz8cbFm9XO0

i stopped because i realized it was either teaching something I wasn't actually using in practice (so no point), or it was about something i simply didn't care about (like skull studies, which i wasted my time on because people like you gave the impression it would be useful, it wasn't!) or because it was clearly not actually giving me results (like how i'd still spam ref studies, even though I no longer felt like i was learning anything from them).

You learned the wrong lessons, bud. I don't care how long it took you to draw that, it's not good. Expedited shit is still shit. Look, I'm not trying to be (too) mean here, but this is some Sonichu OC shit, it legitimately is not good whatsoever. >>7839378 I drew this in about 2 minutes. I did over 100 drawings this month, probably this week to be honest, I don't really keep count. But, who actually cares?

You know what makes everything *really* easy? Actually learning your fundies. You have no clue how easy it is to draw *literally anything* if you actually understand how drawing works. I can draw whatever I want! Zero struggle! Wild stuff.

And I'm not miserable! I love drawing. Drawing random shit is fun. Because I like drawing, the doing things part, I don't just like the result.

drawing anime girls in the void isn't all I have ever drawn, but as the anon you are critiquing is saying, if your heart isn't into it, who cares?

As for pic related, I drew the santa lady and the encompassing doodle after someone else drew in the little elf with the boner.
>>
>>7839532
i do find what you said about being able to draw everything because of fundies bit strange though. to my knowledge, hardly anything is generalizable in drawing, everything is highly specific, you have to learn each thing individually. for example knowing how to draw a t-shirt will not make you able to draw a dress, and knowing both doesn't translate into being able to draw a coat. no generalizable principle or fundamental gets around that. if you care about making things beautiful and charming and worthwhile there are no shortcuts, its one at a time until you figure it out, so as you can imagine it takes a lot of experience to be able to do everything.

like... you're planting that seed for a while before it before it starts giving you fruit, and each plant is unique. you don't get both pears and apples from the apple tree, you just get apples. maybe your skill with the apple tree might help with raising the pear tree, but you're never gonna get a pear until you specifically plant it.

(well... i'll admit as i got better it became increasingly the case that i would do something i never did before and it magically work out for me anyways, but that isn't exactly something one should take for granted lel. like thats not from fundies, thats from gitting gud.)

(also i guess technically using a reference is a general thing that can do everything, but thats like being a ref-bot just copying without understanding. you might as well be a photographer or ai.)

There's nothing special about a dress vs a t-shirt. They're both just cloth drapery. Fundies are ALL generalized, that's why they're fundies. Everything is in perspective, everything has form, everything has lighting, everything has color, everything has value, you're not escaping it.

nta but yeah, if you can draw a shirt you can draw a coat. It's just learning materials, soft, fluffy, rigid that are different.

This was actually an epiphany for me learning to draw, realizing it DOES translate from garment to garment

Good shit anon.
If I may, can I suggest trying one thing? Give it a shot if you feel like it to see if it works or not when actually put into practice, but, perhaps you could try giving some parts of the lineart more weight i.e. make them blacker and thicker, this way you might be able to increase the sense of depth by making some elements "pop out" more where appropriate. See the hand for example: currently it almost seems to be blending with the rest of the subject, however if you were to increase lineart weight for the contour of the entire hand that may be rectified. Same goes for the face, those braid looking things, the hat; the idea is to establish some sort of visual hierarchy by increasing lineart weight on the largest or otherwise most relevant elements in the subject.
Mine's all theory anyway, I could very well be talking right out of my ass. Whatever the case, keep up the good work anon, you have skill

My problem isn't with that he only draws 1girl1void

It's that he, in combination:
1. only draws one thing
2. complains that he's not good
3. deflects any and all advice to 'it's my style' (despite #2)
4. acts like he has his entire process figured out (despite #2)

You do not get to simultaneously act like you've found the secret sauce and complain that it's not working at the same time, and expect no one to call you a retarded hypocrite.

why are you always picking fights with permabegs and schizos who don't want your advice and will never take it no matter who's giving it? i swear i see you fighting at least once a month if not more frequently, at least whenever i visit the board. surely you have better things to do, and i mean that sincerely. even giving harsh crit to begs that are receptive would feel better if you want to be mean. i've seen you be helpful and even friendly at times, i don't know what sets you off to fight schizos
>>

I get bored okay. KSP takes too damn long to load.

But seriously, it really doesn't take that long to type out a comment, and I'd rather vent here than fuck with my Twitter algorithm.

I stopped being nice and helpful because the response is the same either way, and being a big meanie makes me feel less like I'm wasting time trying to play altruist. Trying to help /beg/s is a minefield, most of them are this guy. I can give as much legitimate helpful advice as I'm physically able and say all my little pretty pleases, but they're not going to make any attempt to listen regardless.

In the end shouting at a brick wall is better for the soul than pretending I'm not entitled to an opinion.

but is your heart really in it? you haven't even posted a single finished drawing or at the very least a slightly polished sketch that would take you more effort than 5 minutes
when i'm drawing things i like drawing, i find myself much more motivated to finish my work rather than just making a 2 minute doodle and calling it a day. but when you get to the point where this is all you can do it might be worth considering that this is something more than laziness and there's something wrong with your brain that you should be trying to fix. i'm not saying stop drawing anime girls in a white void entirely, but there are steps you can take towards leveling up your strengths to make better looking art of anime girls in a white void, and it doesn't even have to involve grinding fundies all day
>>
>>7842200
I think limiting yourself to grayscale because your not "good enough" for colors isn't the right mindset to have. Colors themselves intrinsically have their own values.

I think in terms of your shading, your light source in this picture alone is all over the place. In addition, it looks like you're a little scared to commit? Instead of having a good range or dark or mid tones, your picture is 80% the base color, 10% shaodws 10% highlights. Which /could/ work for some like anime style, but I think you need to practice figuring out a light source first.
>>
>>7842410
yeah, i do see what you mean
there is a feeling of unnatural studio lighting to it
i never did light source studies so i guess now might be a good time to do that. my workflow in general is very wonky because this is maybe my 2nd time ever doing a fully rendered piece like that
>>
>>7842237
>but is your heart really in it
haha... thats the problem, it really isn't, its awful trying to do anything. i've lost my passion, and im a person that has always relied heavily on my obsession, its my reason for drawing. im not normal anymore, things don't work like they used to, i am honestly kind of broken, and im just trying to get back to normal again. i had depression which made me feel nothing, which killed my passion, which never came back, and then i had brainfog issues which made it impossible to focus, and even after these things fixing, the whole thing has been very disorienting, its like it shifted me out of place and i can't do it right anymore.

you say improve improve, put effort. the thing is, there isn't even anything i like or care to improve to anymore. there is no better. better means getting something you like more, i don't like anything anymore, barely. its difficult to find what i love, when it used to be all over the place i was crazy for it. people don't draw what I love anymore, they used to but everyone's style changed and now it doesn't appeal to me the same. you're getting a very, chronically uninspired me right now. unlike before when i had no energy, now i actually can put serious effort, there's just nothing worth putting it in for, but either way i took a vow against hard work so i wouldn't anyways haha. Maybe its my body telling me i need to stop playing with toys and do real work instead.
>>
hey are you >>7829120 >>7829136

>Maybe its my body telling me i need to stop playing with toys and do real work instead.

I won't lie to you thats up to you. thats kind of the thing, I understand you because i was you at some point. i would say your work ethic and passion might be misaligned, but dont worry so much about that right now. if it feels right or wrong, the nice thing about drawing. you have proof of something for the rest of your life no matter how much you put out there and didnt work/appeal to everyone.

the fire from the blade is barely casting light on the characters
if you make the whole background much darker and light up the center it will improve the composition immensely
the halos are also confusing, especially the demon one. they are supposed to be a circle fixed on the back of the head but you represented them as simply something that stays in the back of the head in relation to the perspective of the observer

nta (obviously), but you really have to be selectively realistic about things like this because it looks pretty bad otherwise. Like, imagine watching Star Wars where the lightsabers constantly peak the fuck out of the camera light levels and overpower every other light in the scene. That shit would suck. I feel like it looks much better with the halo and blade as semi-symbolic elements and makes it feel more like fantasy.

He's saying you should use your comfort zone as a baseline to learn other topics on top of. BUT YOU HAVE TO ACTUALLY LEARN NEW THINGS. DRAWING A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT OUTFIT DOESN"T FUCKING COUNT.

You are not doing that. You're drawing the same thing over and over again hoping you'll somehow magically get better. That's retarded. Stop making excuses for why being a dumbfuck is a justifiable position.

yes, you expand to new things while staying in range. reread my post, i said it right here
>If you restrict yourself to only drawing what you know (what I call "staying in range") this will of course... force you only do what you know... which is very limiting and annoying - thus it forces you to study how to know new things, so that you can finally be allowed to do them again.

(pic related was made august 2024.)

you're not wrong though, i barely do anything new or any studies anymore, even i would like to find some way to get myself to do more poses and to color more, but i actually do experiment a lot within my restraints, i am trying all sorts of things trying to fix my issues.

I've been looking at places in norther Spain and southern France on google street view lately for landscape inspo. A lot of it looks similar with rolling hills, fields and isolated trees which makes it kind of easy to paint. The place in the sketch is just made up based on that.

The paper texture bugs me as well. I just gotta figure out how to make it less strong or something, because it's barely visible with the other medium brushes, but with watercolor brushes it's too strong.

Anyone good at perspective? I made my own crude 3D blockout of a sleigh to help and I'm still fucking this up.

The sleigh is just way too wide, you're not sure what depth looks like with your setup.

- Find the point on the center line that makes a right angle between your two vanishing points (blue). Here, I just made a big square and moved it around until it fit.

- Bisect that angle, or in this case, draw a diagonal onto your square (orange). Where that line meets the vanishing point is the diagonal between your two vanishing points.

- Now you can use your diagonal to construct a perfect square to use as reference (red).

I have never drawn anything good in my entire life and no one has ever genuinely thought I have either. Any attention I received on a piece was out of pity because of how terrible I am and the only viable option is to kill myself
>>
>>7849491
Excellent! Keep at it!
>>
>>7849491
Yeah I guess that makes sense.
Unless you're white, then dont kill yourself.

Here's another doodle. I didn't spend that much time on it. But I wanna learn how to color and render stuff. Or should I still continue focusing on anatomy?
>>
>>7849722
>>7849724
Sorry but you're still a beg, maybe high or mid beg. This isn't meant to be mean
>>
>>7849729
Nah it's cool. What do I need to do to get to intermediate level?
Can you point out what I need to work on
>>
>>7849729
Any critique requires you to post your work in order to estimate the value of your opinion
>>
>>7849732
I personally think you have potential, but your anatomy still needs a lot of work. Do some gesture drawings, draw hands, heads, whatever. For gestures do both clothed and unclothed to practice your folds more, and draw more dynamic stuff. This is funny coming from me though cuz my folds are a mess
>>
>>7849743
Thanks anon. I'll work on that.
Also can you tell me if I should just try hard Loomis or is there a more sensible route?
Nice art
>>
>>7849746
Honestly I don't know, I never tried Loomis or any other traditional learning method, I just did my own thing and observed. My progress was slow because of it but eh
>>
>>7849472
First off, thanks for showing me this technique with the right angles and the big square, I've never seen that before even after perusing multiple resources on perspective. Second of all, you're right in that the sleigh is unusually wide. That was for a reason, I should have clarified, a reason I won't bother to explain since it would derail the thread.

Great painting .
I dunno I have really fucked up intrusive thoughts lol
>>
>>7849831
But on a serious note how long do you give me until I become decent? Ie advanced intermediate or pro?
Like 2 or 3 years or more?
>>
>>7849851
2 or 3 years seems like a decent goal. I've personally been drawing for 9 or 10 lol (I'm 25 currently), but I goofed around too much without ever studying properly
>>
>>7849854
Same I've been drawing since I was a kid. I tried teaching myself bridge man when I was 24 it propelled me a lot but I didn't stay consistent and kept ignoring art but now I'm trying to be serious about it

It's my first time drawing without lineart. I think the broccoli stem looks good, but now I have to make the top part, but I don't know how. I had thought about making a flower (?) at the same time, but surely there must be a better and faster way.
What do you think?
>>
prove me wrong but i think drawabox is the most retarded course you can ever take as a beginner as not only it is boring but will screw up your ability to draw boxes useful for construction and perspective
drawabox teaches you to draw boxes like an engineer, not an artist
>>
>>7852182
Draw a box right now
>>
>>7851303
If I may, I don't think your question is clear. Yes, I think your stem is pretty good, but are you trying to make a photocopy study or are you willing to take artistic liberties? If its a photo copy, then you know what to do and just break down the broccoli into more manageable shapes then refine from there. Otherwise just blur the picture and get a sense of values from there right?

I think this is lovely and very creative, but is a bit hard to read. Darker line weights would make a massive difference in a piece such as this

Pic rel is concept art for the one reborn from bloodborne. Note how line weight is used to create clarity in specific areas of the drawing
