Trying to get back into figure drawing. I’m trying things from different masters, critique is more than welcome
>>7827805>critique is more than welcomeThat's not what a nose looks like.
>>7827805I think you're doing well. Just keep drawing and studying. There are a few areas you can improve but it's mostly just more anatomy and polish.
Today’s practice. I’m not sure about the arm length or head size, so let me know>>7827808I mean body-related critiques. I wasn’t practicing faces, but I gave it a try here.>>7827928Thank you, yeah, the grind never ends. I just finished Hide’s figure course and was planning on copying Morpho’s simplified forms. I’ve been trying to escape whatever hell I’m in right now for a couple of years.
I'm starting to feel like my brain just can't process 3D shapes at all even looking at references. Just keep beating my head against a wall.
>>7827974Sometimes it's just impossible without the experience this is why figure , gesture drawing and copying your favorite artists is so important, you just have to grind the shapes until you can rotate them on your own. Never give up.
>>7827541Try to capture the figure as a whole, seems like you draw it "part by part", also work on those lips and hair, they seem too stiff and out of touch; thanks for the ref tried it too ^^

>generate random pictures, random angles random rotations, zooms???Basically a practice drawing tool? But just splatter you with pictures, no timer, you can just...clickthru. or whatever do you need to add up to six digit traffic?
>>7827986>seems like you draw it "part by part"im not sure what you mean
>>7827986
>>7828380In reality its not that forword tilted, camera distorts reality.
>>7828380....my intent isn't to draw it 1by1.I rather try to capture the form and understand the what i'm looking at.....i drew that probably in 8 min. if we count the shading maybe 10 min..
>>7828384sure, I'm just going off of the reference in OP's post>>7828386>I rather try to capture the form and understand the what i'm looking at.....I'm not quite sure what you mean, as there are simple yet meaningful differences in the cast and your drawing which show a lack of understanding of the form and the placement of features. I'm just pointing them out.
>>7828390i understadn your concern, ofc. i lack in form but i rather draw 10 drawings in 10 hours (which may lack on some aspects) than 1 drawing in 10 hours (in which i took my time to measure everything just to "copy" it 1:1)..... i did that in the past but...na not my cup of tea atm., maybe for intense study-subjects in the future... but for now i rather enjoy just drawing. ^^
>>7828386>I rather try to capture the form and understand the what i'm looking atsounds like cope, to be honestif you would say, it a rough, quick sketch, okeybut i dont see any deeper understanding of the subject, proportions are off, form is off, face features are off.i spend already 2 to 4 hours on the drawing, comparing and measuring and i think i gained a deeper understanding of the subject, than you did.>but for now i rather enjoy just drawingthat sounds more like truth.
>>7828393that's fair. unless you (the general 'you', not specific 'you') have to draw/paint something for someone else, you're free to do whatever. in part I just like analyzing people's work for my own eye, but also in the (perhaps rare) case that someone else sees it and gets something out of it.
>>7828428:/ well, it's not like i can't do that what your talkin' about; =.="if you gained a depper understanding of the subject than the your next subject with the evidence.

>>7864748be mindful of your proportion. Because of the angle it seems like the limbs are a bit long and the head seems small compare to the body. For hatching watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_zGIgeh1IQ
>>7864997where would be the best place to upload?
>>7865016as in a file sharing site? I use gofile but for that you would have to zip your folder to make it easier to download. The other problem you might face is that all of the refs sets will be overs 10s of GB so if you don't have the space you need to break up the files. Also I think they have videos so it might take days if you are going to upload everything.
>>7864989Ngl I find value in learning how to draw ugly people
>>7865012Thanks for the video! It’s kinda frustrating because I was extra diligent about measuring and noting landmarks, yet this 3ish minute gesture I did has more accurate proportions
>>7865278thats where timed gesture could help, it forces you to focus on the basic form before adding details. I am assuming the live drawing session was timed.
>>7864563i just think youre at the point where you would benefit if every now and then you treat those constructions with the care you would a finished drawing, just to test (and hopefully further) your understanding of basic forms and proportions

>>7865974plane changes = turning edges. if you dont feel like you can handle more than a vague sense of finding that stuff then dont worry about it. just keep practicing figures, measuring proportions from reference until you feel more comfortable.

>>7866654Her arm is fucking huge
>>7866654Her head seems to be a little bit small
>>7866659I thought the same but the reference had a long arm. So I just went with that.As >>7866660 said, I now realize I made the head too small which makes it seem even longer.
>>7866118Ok, thank you. I gave it a try- the results.. as you can see. It's probably better to work on my awful drawing speed before I think about getting a sense of volume.
>>7866663>>7866654you dont have to follow the ref exactly, make it better than the ref, if something looks strange, idealize it
>>7866700I think you need to squeeze stuff a bit more, in the right side of the torso, the buttocks and left shoulder you could use some, along with overlapping and darker shadows. And I don't think you should try to draw faster. You get faster when you know what you’re doing, then you naturally take less time. You can do timed drawings to improve it if you want anyways, but focus more on gesture.
>>7867587>you need to squeeze stuffIndeed, I forgot all the pinches.>darker shadowsMy values are all over the place. The pencil brush I like is awful for building up dark areas. In trad, I see they use the flat of the pencil to make soft edges and values, but my tablet doesn't have tilt and all the brushes I tried only have a soft edge in one direction and they're all super dark. What do you guys use?>And I don't think you should try to draw faster. You get faster when you know what you’re doing, then you naturally take less time. These >>7865420 took 30 minutes each and they look like 5 minute gestures. I'm pretty sure there's a problem in my process, like I rush too much or don't do enough in the early stages of the drawing and have to spend time correcting it later. Revisting gesture sounds good.In any case, thanks for the feedback.

>>7848515back againbeen doing some non-figure painting stuffI mentioned in another thread I was fond of some of the nude sketches of Gustav Klimt. Also how it seems that many old painters and draftsmen did little to no construction and seemed to focus entirely on contour and silhouette. So here's some sketches inspired by Klimt's, done with little to no construction. They're not as lively or confident as his but I think it's time I move away from constructing figures. It's way more engaging to draw this way.
>>7858285>>7864748>>7865012This week’s life drawing. I tried applying the advice about cross hatching and think it turned out pretty good! Still lots of room for improvement though. The pose was a nice challenge, trying to make the back look interesting.
>>7869037>I think it's time I move away from constructing figures. It's way more engaging to draw this way.do you not worry about messing up proportions and anatomy, or have you put in enough mileage constructing to where you feel confident enough about those aspects? and does it still feel more engaging when drawing that way without reference?
>>7869754you made it look like she has a hairy back
>>7870764>do you not worry about messing up proportions and anatomy,I do but it's all a matter of the way you practice. I think if you only train to have good anatomy and proportion with construction then that's all you'll be able to do. I want to train to see those things without it.I never really draw without reference. Even if im not copying something 1:1 I still pull up a bunch of reference material as a guide.

/fig/uary I’m not sure what to focus on this month. I’m thinking hands and silhouette/ overlap.>>7868706>I'm not 100% sure I understand what I'm doing,Do not worry this is expected. If you ask n people what gesture is, you will get n+1 answers. It’s one of those things that nobody knows exactly. I think of gesture as the culmination of your current knowledge on abstraction, composition, perspective, anatomy etc.One of the things I don’t like about Hampton as a teacher is that he skips too many steps in his process, things that are obvious to someone with his experience, and he doesn’t really talk about what he’s thinking. That’s why I like the book Gesture Drawing for Animatiors by Walt Stanchfield. He doesn’t focus so much on how to draw his gestures; he goes into what he’s thinking when drawing gesture. Steve Huston does something similar, but not as well as Stanchfield. An exercise I like is to draw a line, then draw two cuboids on each side and connect them in a way that makes the silhouette read as volumetric as possible.>>7868114Start with rendering gradients and learn how to define value systems.

When figure drawing and you're not sure of how a part connects to another, is that when you check out an anatomical figure? I'm really not sure if I should focus on getting the general shape down or if I need to start drawing muscles. I am studying anatomy but jeez it's tough to put my head around, even if I'm looking at insertion/exit points and connecting stuff to the bone, it's silly-looking when I draw it.

>>7872377Day 2 - I like this model>>7872540The honor is mine pink guy>>7872563Yeha i might drop it, too much to draw so little time. But its kind of a tradition for me now, so i feel a little guilty>>7872566I think the croquis cafe guy made it up. Larry withers or whatever his name is. I miss those videos. I’m too cheap to access through the paywall
>>7872638>>7872377these look great. do you do any polished pieces as well? got a blog etc?
FUCKING CANT DRAW HANDS FAAARGH FUUFUCK NIGGGER FAGGOT
>>7872944Can you draw a spider? One circle and eight lines coming out of it, try that.

>>7872638nice to see you back.btw, is the VioletClover Server still going or did you also get purged ?
second day, fun session>>7872377I'm>>7872400take 3 steps back, focus on simple shapes and try morpho simplified forms.>>7872621nice figures, while it looks like some kind of canny edge detection the effort behind it is impressive. good job.>>7873085pretty nice very graphic, looks like toguro the younger. I like it
>>7872638Day 3 - i cant be bothered to fix these faces, i have other shit to waste time on>>7872916Blog here https://x.com/tableguyart I was posting in /draw/ but i think they resurrected /alt/ so I’ll probably move back for my next drawing>>7873003Oh i dont know good question. I clicked the join link like a month ago and looked around and nobody was there and i havent looked back since then.>>7873241You cheeky contracting bastard
>>7873330>>7873330>Blog herethanks! very cool art
Some older sketches I haven't posted yet
no progress yet
quick session, I don't think this is sustainable kek.>>7873330>You cheeky contracting bastardthanks?great contrast your blacks are really good>>7873480cool work, skin folds are hard>>7873750The torso is a little ambiguous. If you focus more on the centerline, I think you can solve most of the things you’re having a hard time with. Good job
>>7873241>take 3 steps back, focus on simple shapes and try morpho simplified forms.I will check out morpho ty.What do you mean by focus on simple shapes? Like try to copy shapes I see on the reference as if I was tracing?
>>7873840> Like try to copy shapes I see on the reference as if I was tracing? No, because what you are doing right now is some kind of symbol symbol drawing, you know you need to simplify the subject but don't know how and why the abstractions you are using work. For example, your boxes, it looks like you saw that you need to abstract the ribcage and pelvis as boxes but don't know how or why, so once your reference deviates from what you have seen you seem to struggle. So what I suggest is to do morpho simplified forms, try to understand the abstractions, try to find a simple contraposto pose in the book and search a reference of that pose, just 1, and focus on the reference for a long time, more than a week
>>7873330Day 4 - i thought i was going to draw this bitch for the whole figuary, but she is actually really boring to look at>>7873750I’ve missed your self deprecating posts>>7873835You got this, it’s only day 4, there is plenty of time to double up. I think one year i did all the figuary videos in one day> your blacks are really goodI dont usually draw people of color
This one was incredibly difficult, but at least I think they look like they’re in the same plane… I think>>7873954>I dont usually draw people of colormiscommunication I was referring to the darkest values, they are really good.
>>7873835thanks mano. salvaged that fig somewhat>>7873954my anguish is your amusement...
