I drew something I'm decently proud but there's still a lot I can work on, the background is simplistic and there's a ton of perspective issues. Lines are cleaner than I usually do them but they can still use a lot of work, the pose is pretty damn stiff and shadows are all over the place

im still proud of it though

measure everything by heads, ideal torso is 3 heads long from the top of the neck to the bottom of the crotch, the thigh is 2 heads, same with the the shin down to the heel, arms are 3 heads long including the hands. These are for conventional proportions that mostly work on masculine characters, for women or smaller characters, shorten the legs to 3 & 1/2, arms to 2 1/2 and body the same, and make the head bigger

>>
>>7877534
NTA, I'm a beginner who just started a week ago, but so far the two sketches I've made were pretty close in proportion to the 8 heads because I kept it in mind. I sort of eyeballed it, but here are other proportions to keep in mind:
>the distance between the top of the shoulder and the elbow is the same as that between the elbow and the metecarpals (the knuckles)
>the elbows line up with the navel
>the hands reach the mid-thighs or the trochanters of the femur
>the knees are midway up from the ground and down from the pelvic bone (the crotch)
I myself am surprised at how well it came out on my first attempt, especially because everything looked like shit when drawing boxes. I recommend the Morpho books.

In other words, if you know pretty closely where each part of the body should be theoretically, you won't stray too far from their proper place and thus you won't look too out of proportion.
Personally your drawing doesn't look that disproportionate to me. If anything, I think the upper body looks too thin and flat. Make it more voluminous (give her tits), and maybe make her head a bit bigger.

It is used to transfer scale to your working medium, (paper, canvas, cardboard, etc). It's just a very basic and general measurement aid, like, to figure it out where's the middle of the object, face, or figure. What's the size of the head in relation with the rest of the body, or the nose. The ways to use it as a measurement tool are infinite, depending on your method of use.
You could add some even spaced marks to you pencil to make it a better measurement tool.

Anyone with experience in 3D? Am trying to climb up the uncanny valley, but also do anatomy somewhat well. It looks really creepy when I define the line between the "moustache" area and the cheek, and trying to give curvature to the 45 degree angle, where the cheek bone protrudes, recesses, then the chin curves outward again some definition. It looks skeletal though, and so I kept the roundiness to the face. Any tips would help
>>

It's mostly down to grinding. I've spent basically all my time drawing on linework and form so far. I'd say keeping a narrow focus on what you're studying helps a lot. Over six months, instead of trying to improve at everything marginally, I've tried to improve at a small number of things by a lot.

Maybe I worded that wrong. I meant that I've mostly done lineart when I draw, and try to make make the 3D forms clear with just lines alone (lineweight, how they overlap). It's less for me to focus on for as a beginner, and I don't like it when a drawing looks really flat without shadows or highlights.

You have the same IQ as a normienigger, so yeah i guess you are extremely fucked, at least you are not a left brained retard.

Do a quick test, prompt around 100 pictures and don't only change the artists/character (front view, nude, naked, collarbone, navel, by (x) , etc) , then quickly inspect them by holding right, you will realize they all look the same. Now go to danbooru and you will realize that 90% of the shit that gets uploaded to the booru are 3DPD/AI copies.

People think that there is a fight against AI, AI wonned a long long time ago , the average and below average artist is dead.

>>
>>7878101
I know you're just a crab, but I'll answer earnestly anyway. I'd like to make animations eventually, so studying animated characters seems like a decent exercise.
I guess there's the more ontological interpretation of your question of 'why do anything now that AI can do it?', but I don't really find that all too convincing either. With or without AI, in 150 years almost all evidence of you and the life you lived will be forgotten, at best the dregs of it will be digitally archived in a forgotten corner of the endless landfill of humanity's digital footprint. So why do anything at all?
To answer to both of those questions is, I draw cute anime girls because I can and I want to.

Thank you. I draw these for someone that I like. She is the first real friend that I have had since my last friend, who was my best and only friend at the time, committed suicide three years ago. I quit drawing after his death. When I met her, three months ago, I dusted off my sketchbook and looked through it, about 12 years of art in it and then I got back to work.

I eventually want to go out with her and date, but, we are both busy people. She likes anime a lot, so I do it often, usually adapting her to an anime of choice, but it is like Andy Warhol and his cans of soup and pads of Brillo. Slight alterations to the art style... Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure Orange Road, Yawara, etc., before I know it one blends into the other and now I keep a spreadsheet, but to her, each one is unique and she cherishes them (her words, not mine). She loved my drawing yesterday in particular.

I use pictures for reference, because I have issues with originality and execution in drawing.

Would you perhaps make some suggestions of things to draw? I like animals and flowers.

Have this, adapted from a picture of an animation cel from Rurouni Kenshin, the hair was changed, as is the bokken (it has been shortened). The robe was simplified. Again, little originality, which is why I like the birds more, it just takes more effort for those. I hope this does not reveal her identity.

The others should share more, I wish not to take up too much file space.

man, having someone to draw for and having that person enjoy what you do is some of the best motivation you can have, I'm happy to hear you found someone that makes you happy, anon :).

On what to draw, there's so many cool birds out there I feel like you could draw your entire life and never run out of bird species. Have you tried drawing a Kiwi? More of a ball with a beak than a real bird but still a cool fella.
Also whatever this guy is, reminds me of a flamingo in short.

Egret or Ibis of some sort. I see egrets frequently where I live, but development has been driving them away, not to mention that there was a wildfire last week. Those are both good suggestions.

Someone that I know on-line suggested to draw a tit (her favourite bird). On the one hand, it is not a bad idea, but the name is unfortunate in English (which is not her first language). Seeing the file name, are you from Croatia?
>>
>>7878229
I'm from germany actually, I just downloaded the image and didn't change the name haha. Actually I should try drawing some more birds, I tried it a bit a few threads ago but got stuck after the contours, alot of feathers and details can be pretty overwhelming.
>>
>>7878213
Most of the time I'm not drawing anime girls, this was just a lower effort and more fun form of study for me. Studies like this, where you're doing pure observational drawing (looking at something and trying to recreate it as accurately as possible) is a good beginner exercise because you need to train yourself to see proportions accurately, but getting really good at observational drawing doesn't really make you good at drawing, it just makes you good at seeing and copying. After that, you need construction and gesture in order to make things look good without references. That's sort of the stage I'm currently working at, where I'm trying to learn to construct full figures in poses that look good without relying on pose references.
Take my advice with a grain of salt, but my take on the path a beginner should take:
1. Get decent at observational drawing. (You don't need perspective, construction or gesture to get good at this)
2. Learn perspective + basic primitive construction
3. Learn more complex constructions by drawing them from reference and then from memory. (This is where I am)
4. Learn gesture if your figures are rigid and sad.
5. ???

>>7878217
>>7878218
I don't use AI for anything. I graduated college before AI was a thing, so I actually had to learn how to read and write unlike most retards on the internet today.
>>
>>7878230
Kek. I was trained in realism with a focus on birds, fish, trees and flowers, when I took art classes. If you want to get good at drawing birds, start by drawing fish the only difference between scales and feathers is the difference between scalloped and straight lines.

Additionally, you want the outline down first. Birds are easy to do with the outline. Small birds are pears, larger birds are more complex. Imagine drawing a squash for waterfowl, crane, peafowl, etc. They are not completely squash shaped, but the top of a squash is like the neck of a waterfowl.

I am not sure if this is helpful, but natural forms generally occur in patterns. That is what I was taught. My instructor was very good about breaking down forms. Despite this, I still struggle with a lot of mammals.

For 2, pick your poison. I'm not a fan of Drawabox, but works for some, but it's very brute force, like memorizing multiplication tables instead of learning how to multiply numbers. I did Krenz's from the resource thread and it was fine. There's a trillion perspective courses out there though, just learn how to draw cubes and circles/ellipses in 1-2-3 point perspective and how they change by moving the vanishing points around, and you're pretty much good to go.
3. Recently I worked through about half of Human Anatomy for Artists by Xiao Weichun. The translation is garbage, but art books are for the pictures anyway. Helped me learn how to construct and draw a skull or head from any angle. Lotta people say good things about Hide's head drawing course as well.
The big game changer here for helping me 'learn' a form was to draw it from reference, then draw it from memory, and then finally draw it at arbitrary rotations. Once you can reliably do that, you've learned the form and can move on.
4. Michael Hampton has a good lecture on gesture that I watched, but I'm not really an expert on it.

Don't get discouraged! I pulled this out of of an old portfolio. It's an exercise I did when I took an art class. We laid two pieces of paper on top of each other and tried to accurately draw them. It was hard. The whole class spent over an hour measuring with our pencils and adjusting lines over and over and by the end maybe three or four had gotten it this good.

But I'm glad I struggled because it forced me to understand perspective and measuring and how the angles relate better. Don't be scared to take long time doing this on a single drawing. You won't get any line perfect on the first go. But that's part of the process

Thank you, but it is nothing really. You would be surprised how little time it took to make these (the crane took 10 minutes to draw and 18 minutes to colour, the peafowl was 8 minutes to draw and 27 minutes to colour).

It also does not help that Chinese is my third language and the first language that I was taught when in school, so my translation could be bad. (Also does not help that my teacher was a Hokkien speaker teaching me Mandarin, which was her third Chinese dialect that she learned).

Not that it matters, but in case anyone is curious, my first two languages were English and Russian, worse yet is the fact that I live in America, but the Russian speaking side is the one who was in America for more than one generation, my father is from the U.K, which leads to a lot of confusion.

Well you see anon, A missile knows where it is because it knows where it isnt.
You first need a very concrete and solid goal for what you are trying to do and you need to problem solve to get there.
Can you pick a hand drawing of an artist you really really like and copy it? Copy it until it is pixel perfect. Copy it until you can redraw it blind. Copy it until you cant.
Drawing is like language. How can you be expected to know the alphabet if you cant write a letter?

To be sincere, I want to make my hands more cuteish and cartoonish. But once I try to go this path, there are like thousands of ways to do it and none of them seems to fit what I want to at all. So when I go to hands, I just get lost.
I'm not even interested in little details of skin too much. The best scenario to me would be if my hands looks like cute gloves instead of having things like nails and wrinkles.

The real issue is that the way you have the cars drawn throws everything out of wack. On one side of the road you have a reasonably sized green car but the otherside has cars for munchkins, and they are right across from each other so it fucks everything up.
If you wanna keep the small cars you would have to bring the cars that are bigger more towards the viewer in the foreground.
Like here in my edit I just duplicated the two carsthat were closest to us and brought those closer to the foreground. Then I took the small munchkin cars on the opposite side of the road and enlarged them slightly so that they are closer in size to the cars that are right across. The illusion comes through more that way
But you are onto something anon, keep up the work
>>
>>7878481

>>
>>7878482
Anon, what that >>7878481 anon said can help to make your piece more visually correct, but that weird out of whack uncanny valley effect is what makes your work so special. It throws your mind down through some tripping slide and that's awesome. That could be your thing, don't get rid of that tripping factor so fast..
>>
>>7878484
This is my issue really. I love doing it as it comes to me, but then it boils down to: how accurate am I being, and if so, how much of myself?
If you've been here a little bit, I did >>7873671 in the old thread. Been trying to get more variation so I improve somewhat. Thanks for your thoughts.
>>
>>7878442
"Correct" perspective is a giant meme anyway. City streets are almost never perfectly flat. Mathematically right perspective looks soulless more often than not
>>

I hope you can find a way to keep that weird visual magic ongoing.
>>
>>7878299
Thanks for the advice, anon. Yea it can be hard, but trying to improve on it and getting a little bit better here and there is pretty nice.

Do you know why it feels "flat"? I have a feeling it's the perspective of the mug, I think it should be more tilted towards the viewer.

Not to be condescending, but I can see that you aren't even trying. You're drawing circles, but you don't try to make them perfectly circular, just drawing them however it comes. You redraw over them, but your following attempts aren't trying to correct the roughness using the bad circle as frame for a proper circle. Same with the triangles.
I just started a week ago and in 1 page you can see the instant improvement, the transition from rough circles and triangles to more proper ones.

You did good, but I'm sure you're aware of some issues on the stance. The legs need some tweaking, he seems to be sit on something instead of being on a crouching fight stance.
Keep at it. you can do the same pose again and again till you get the legs right. Find a good ref for that pose.
>>
>>7878907
>I'm sure you're aware
I'm still in the hellish limbo that is being aware that there's something wrong with it, but not knowing exactly what. Can you tell me what parts of the legs are making it look like he's sitting instead of crouching please? Like I look at the image and know SOMETHING is wrong with it, but I can't pinpoint what. I know the solution is to just practice more, but I really dislike the feeling of not even being able to tell what's throwing it all off.

It's called the "Horse Stance". I couldn't find the exact angle of your drawing, wich is quite tricky. I think the "secret" lies on the shin angle, from the front the shin appears to bend passing the knee, but from the side, it clearly goes behind the knee, obviously otherwise you would fall lol. Your pose shows a bit of both angles, that's why it is tricky to draw. That's just my interpretation of your pose with out a proper ref. But you I'm sure you can make it work. I should look into Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee refs, I forgot about that.
Anyways I hope it helps.

i read the right figure as feminine, but admitelly I had to take a closer look when i saw it at first.
as i said before i am very beg, so my advice might be bad; i am sorry if it comes as rude, but as an enthusiast of buff guy/skinny girl, your style and drawing were imediately really pleasant and cute for me

i made some blue lines in what i think might help achieve a more feminine shape without breaking your style and everything else. I think her right hand was quite big for her size and in comparision to the other one.
Her form also feels rather rigid if this makes sense? introducing more curves and making it more shapely give me the impression of femininity, instead of just being plain lines.

one thing i've noticed is that your guy has very extreme proportions (not bad, i really like it), but the girl feels plain in comparision, with just the lines. play more with her shape too, don't be so rigid with it.

i hope this is helpful and makes sense, once again i am sory if this comes as rude or anything

Not much feedback to give. Your faces look somewhat off but that's normal since faces are arguably the hardest part of a person to draw. The top left drawing is very well done though with clearly defined and easily readable shapes. Bottom right face is also pretty good barring the eye sockets being a bit too high and wonky in terms of shape

Easy to lose sight of perspective, notice how you changed the angle on the bottom of the sleeve where it should loop around the arm and instead it appears like we're looking straight at it? Top of the sleeve also should loop while it appears flat, looks like a different angle the way it slants.
>>
>>7879318
Yeah, I do that a lot. I don’t know what to do about it because it happens with every one of these. Maybe just because it’s timed, where in a less rushed study I’d be trying to measure and setting up at least a sketch before painting. Maybe I need to flip and and step back more often.
>>
>>7879319
Establish a grid or a horizontal/vertical line, think of how what you're drawing would fit on the paper and not beyond it, find something on the subject that fits say 1/3rd of the paper then simply measure where it would be on the paper.
Looking at negative spaces and just focusing on the bigger sillhouette first instead of details to see if you didn't botch stuff.

I think you did a great job especially if its timed.
>>
>>7879325
Thanks, I’ll try that next time!

I'm sorry anon, I'm too retarded to understand what you mean here. Is the knee not in front of the knee that's facing forward? I drew it assuming that was the case, so if it looks like that, then I'll take it as a win, but I want to properly understand what you mean. Your drawing looks correct to me, and I guess it's because the leg pointing towards me isn't perfectly vertical; is that what you mean? It also helps that he doesn't seem to be as low as my guy, so it looks less like a sitting position.

thank you for asking! I find borderreloaded's art quite unappealing, but his drawings are 'understandable' to me. he draws lots of figs in a consistent/low-rendered style, and I can reasonably deduce what steps he takes to do that. I'm studying general shapes and construction from him, not the style. the more expressive/gestural drawings I like, I can't deconstruct them in the same manner. also it's been quite a fun challenge, making his figs into something I find more appealing

SORRY I MISSED YOUR REPLY! Yes, those are Monka and purple anon, the one in the middle is the main guy of the story. It could be the Shibari anon, but he may better be the "shibari master", or he could be both, a young and an older version of himself. I think you should be more concerned with accuracy than shading right now. Your proportions are pretty off the (admittedly artifact ridden) reference. But if you're working through keys to drawing or whatever book it is then just continue with it. Mileage is the most important thing at the beginning after all

Not to be a jerk, but anon is correct. Pretty much none of Peril's drawings are "sexy" at all and the only reason why their art is interesting is because of the weird situations and dialogue. Only pieces I remembered that was even remotely erotic was the cowboy and Native American flash but it was still had the same problems.

It's the subtle things.
The mouth is stretched out a bit and curves upward too strongly in a way that looks unnatural, like a harlequin smile.
The pupils are a little too dilated, I think. Mismatched in size. Also pasted on the eye's surface like a sticker. The iris is indented, so the pupil sets back in it like a hole at the bottom of a shallow bowl. The cornea on the other hand bulges outward.
The neck is a bit thin and pinches inward.
Otherwise quite good. Kentaro Miura study?

One technique for improving is to use another artist's drawing as reference then comparing both in detail by juxtaposing or superimposing each other.
However, what about "fixing" another beginner/intermediate artist's drawings? You grab an artwork that looks off in some way, and you edit it or redraw it so it looks better.
Could this be a good method to practice and improve?

seeing the strokes and textures was something i admire a lot in art i see but i never trusted myself enough for it. so this time, i tried making them feel more significant and not blend much. i used a different brush on the blue arm to give it a different texture from the body to give it an unfitting feeling

does this makes sense? i tend to repeat myself and write too much without noticing

Talentchads like Senseifag can paint Sistine Chapel tier works of art while self-sucking and peeing and yet you can't even draw an anime girl in a white void. It's OVER if you don't have talent.
>>
>>7880750
It's not so much as talent, but you gotta understand that drawing from observation and drawing from imagination are different skills, but they are interconnected. Even when it comes down to drawing something original with reference, your brain is treating the whole thing as a new challenge because it's calculating shit that goes unused when grinding.
The first few times are going to suck, and you gotta treat it as a learning experience, but take it to the end. Go through all the motions that you have trained in your studies and try to apply them until you have something that's as finished as you can imagine (not necessarily good). It's like racing, you gotta learn both the car AND the track to have a good time.

You can draw anything, anon. What's in front of your eyes right now? You can draw that. Be it your room or yourself channing on the computer/laptop/phone.
Do you not feel inspired when seeing a beautiful flower? The glowing heavens in the twilight or the dusk? Hot women? Strong or powerful men? Cute dogs and cats and birds and mice? The wondrous architecture and works of art of the past? You can draw it, or at least try. There's plenty to draw; you don't have to create something from nothing.
It's a matter of not wanting rather than not having.

NTA, but it's extremely common for someone to get good at observational drawing and then be completely baffled when that doesn't manifest into an ability to draw from imagination. It's funny because pretty much everyone has been there, but they got past it thus can look back and laugh about it, and so can you.

It's because observational drawing and imagination drawing are- like >>7880759
says- both different skillsets, although they are interconnected and do influence each other. Observational drawing skill will give you the prerequisite abilities to see size & angle relationships and draw them as they should be, which is necessary for learning to construct from imagination. You can gain this skill via a shitton of imagination drawing, by essentially self-calibrating off of your own drawings through brute trial and error, but that usually happens when someone doodles a lot from childhood. The skill of imagination drawing is learning to create and sculpt 3D form inside the page. It's kind of like installing Blender in your brain. Everyone has an innate ability to sense and calculate 3D form from 2D visual information. If you look at a picture of a beach ball, by observing how the lines wrap around the ball you can comprehend its roundness. That's the illusion of imaginary 3D form. Of course, this is completely passive and you don't really think about it. You have to learn to reverse engineer this sense to put 3D form into the 2D surface, rather than passively extracting 3D information from 2D image. Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching is one of the best in-a-nutshell representations of the idea, particularly the exercises where you wireframe organic forms- you draw an organic shape and then draw lines wrapping around it, like you're feeling those lines across the surface of this imaginary object. You're interpreting an empty 2D shape into a 3D object in real time. This is the foundation of imagination drawing- building and sculpting form.
>>
>>7880848
I'm the same, start saving art or pictures you find interesting, go look at them when you want to draw but don't draw a copy of them, just take what you like most, or maybe copy one element that stands out to you and expand the rest of the drawing from there. You can combine multiple bits from different sources, that's probably the easiest way to start. As you practice doing this, you'll start to see more things that inspire you or give you ideas because you've been training yourself to look for them.
Also don't limit yourself by thinking creativity in art is only about the subject matter.

Simplify it retard.

Imagination = Memory
Rendering = Coloring for Adults

You can't draw because you have no fundamentals, copy pasting 3dpd or drawings from other artists is not a fundamental skill but it helps understanding them.

Hope that helps retard.

What you're saying makes even less sense and explains nothing. What do you mean by "fundamentals"? Can you define them at all? Drawing from imagination is far more than memory, because you can make up things almost entirely, invent from first principle, or even just draw completely abstract forms at the behest of your whims. Like I said, it's like learning to 3D model with your brain. As a matter of fact, the way that a computer draws images and how a person does it aren't dissimilar, it's all based off of the same principles. A person drawing from imagination is modeling objects in perspective projection. A person painting/rendering from imagination is simulating the light cast on the object(s), how their colors mix, how the light interacts with the materials the object(s) are made from- transparency, reflectivity, refraction, etc.- bounce lighting, ambient occlusion, etc.

Sprained my wrist from a biking accident, so I haven't drawn in a while. Going 35 km/h downhill with bad brakes is not a brilliant idea. Thank god I wore a helmet. I can only draw for five minutes at a time before pain, so bad gestures and light construction is all I can manage for now, while reading through bridgman.
Lot's of fantastic drawings in this thread. Can't comment on all of them, sadly. Wish I could draw and write more, but lurking is best for the next week or so.

>Thanks anon, sorry it took so long to get it lol. Also very jealous of your art, looks super cool. How long have you been drawing?
Sorry I miss your reply anon! I'm on my thirties now and I've been drawing since childhood, thing is, I've never got into art studies, because I got educated to think that "art" is a dead end pursuit in a world like this. I really believed that since very young... and honestly I may still believe it. I dunno. I do believe this shit is mine, and it is to serve only me, and my own pleasure and desires. I could say I've been drawing 20 years, but that's not true, I just stopped drawing recently during 4 months, from august to december I think. Now I'm catching up squeezing all of this "free time", till I go away again. What I think is that you need at least TEN YEARS to get good, even with talent. I mean good enough to "make it" at least to the "entry door", whatever that means lol.

I think it may be because when you're sleep deprived in the aftermidnight you don't really care that much about what you're drawing, so you just let your instincts take over: you're on autopilot and your brain takes control, and your brain knows well what looks proper and what does not, so the quality of your illustrations instantly goes up.
A solution might be to stop making strongly-conscious choices when drawing. Instead, draw from instinct, let your intuition guide you.

I just started learning about shading recently, but if you want my opinion, I think your shading is too high contrast.
You need more halftones (soft colored transitions from light to shadow or from color to black), and the occlusion (the dark shadow created by the connection between the ball and the table) should be smaller.
That said, I think your center/form light, highlight, reflected light, form/core shadow, terminator, cast shadow, and penumbra are good.

Id rather kill myself. Do you really think i stop constructing because i'm sleep deprived? I need that injection of adrenaline, the godtier second win to lock on and construct harder.

I don't even know why people that don't see tridimentionality or even attempt at building it draw, what a huge waste of time.

>it's fun

It's not. Being shit is not fun.
>>
>>7881552
Didn't read, the abs are still pointing down towards the pubis.

You will never be able to draw.
>>
>>7881557
i mog you btw, youre asking prebeg questions hahahaha
>>
>>7881558
I'm not the one that's asking questions. I accept your concession retard.

yes you are, you are fighting for his honor because you started arguing for him, so stand up straight and take the beating beggie
>>
>>7881561
i would ask you to post your work but you are brown, your art is worthless, not only that but you have no idea about basic anatomy. The diamond shape is completly made up , the abs look have a phalus shape and they go down straight to the pubis, this is basic anatomy, you don't even know BASIC ANATOMY.

>>7881560
Post your work.
>>
also never mind, i just realized the lil jeet said fighting, mandem be fighting in the art and critique chinese forum cause of his mediocre understanding of anatomy, watch him do a 180 "i was merely pretending to be retarded"

Actual subhuman behavior.

Your kind killed the site.

Why are you even trying to draw? Your probably comes from stupidity and frustration. You know can't draw, you don't even know basic anatomy or how to represent it. Back to the discord circle jerk. You behave like a 12 year old bully at school, shame it's not a face to face conversation.
