Tried to start an art project with my friend, but he has these random streaks of depression where he becomes despondent and I'm left going solo for days. Is it weird that this fucks my work flow up a bunch and I hate it? I have the skillset needed to make the art alone, but mentally switching from collaboration to solo all the time is really frustrating
>>

Yeah some things ended up looking wrong. I started with a small sketch to fit the vanishing points and the room inside the canvas. But after I did the basic shape of the room and main objects, but after that I resized the room to fill the whole canvas and stopped using perspective all around. It's a very bad process I guess.
>>
>>7850661
I think that might be a good place for you to progress. In Keys to Drawing Chapter 2, there’s an exercise where you draw a box (not what you think), and you draw a spectrum of different shades from total black to total white. It’s a fantastic way to get into shading, and I think it might be a good next step for you.

You can find a PDF of Keys to Drawings online, or by reading the sticky.

Also, you can see the distinct pencil lines in your drawing. Try to make it look like one distinct color. Once again, KtD Chapter 2 has a great exercise for this where you copy a black and white photograph of a woman.

I have tried something other than boos.
Still doing circles in boxes and practicing lines.
She was surprisingly hard, both because I referenced an NES sprite that I had to represent with more clarity and because I could not do the hand and arm properly.
I also tend to view my drawings from a more zoomed out perspective and when I post them opening them to their full size tends to blow them up really hard

I'm starting to feel a bit ashamed of myself currently, because I'm not taking more than 15 minutes per drawing most of times. Even though it's mostly sure it'll give me a better result if I spend more time on it, I think I feel some kind of insecurity of it not being worth the time or fear of losing interest in the drawing middleway.
But everytime I look at your drawings it makes me itching to try being more patient.

Gotcha. Having consistent perspective would make those diagonal walls much easier to figure out. Also, I think the vanishing points you picked aren't the best. I tried mapping it out and at that scale I kept running into distortions. I'm not that experienced with perspective and don't know how to fix it, sadly. The points I pick are always really awkward unless I copy from something.

I used a 2 point perspective for it so the room ended up a little distorted. But that wasn't the issue. I just really got lost at some point. The fuel tanks are all a little wrong in some way or the other and I'm only now noticing I forgot a pillar on the left wall. There are some other mistakes too that I was too lazy to fix, but what's done it's done. This is only meant to be a reference sheet/concept art after all, not a final product.

Thanks anon. I really like these drawings, but I really think it would go a long way if you tried to make drawings like pic rel that use boxes/forms to draw these animals. I see a lot of potential in your work, more so because you draw a lot, but you have to take the time to sharpen up your fundies. Like think about how much more powerful those beaks could be if they were a box with texture around it

>amputees running for energy while guarded by police
The idea comes from Frank Miller's Batman, when Flash is condemned to run on a giant wheel to create infinite energy till he dies. The amputee thing comes from a mistake, I thought an anon did an amputee figure that it wasn't, then a very weird movie called Boxing Helena that I hated but mesmerized me in a traumatic way: The idea of a man imprisoning and destroying something that he loves. But also from the cruelty of our reality, where people are subjected to this authoritarian violence by the judicial and prison system: Legal BDSM violence perpetrated by "institutions of law and order". I'm a very sensible person, cruelty traumatizes me, and I can only cope with this medieval reality we're all living in, by turning all this horror into erotic fantasies. Confronting in fantasy the contradiction of a man subjecting the object of his most sacred desire and life meaning (a beautiful woman to fall in love with) to the most cruel treatment just because a normative orders it. Those horrors in our present time drives me insane, to know that I have to live in that world, I can only turn those horrors into lustful fantasies to exorcise them, or break down in a tearful depression in a dark corner.

With the bodies you’ve got the right idea, they jut need to look neater and more proportional. Work on your lines, circles/spheres, and cylinders. Just try to warm up with everything you’ve drawn here, but as individual elements. Try to also draw your shapes and forms as a consistent size, like for example some thighs are much wider and longer than others.

The post description elaborates a bit further but it's basically just using the eye tilt at the center of axis as a reference to build the other elements of face, since one eye will mostly always be close the center of the head when not in front view or something.
Although I do it for front view too because it somehow works for me.

Hi, I just started drawing this week. I wanted to do a colored picture to get a feeling for every step of the process to start out with, but needless to say I have to do a ton of practice on all fundamentals.
One thing that bothered me is that I am reasonably happy with my sketches, but once I try to do the lineart, it all goes to shit. It's like all the flaws in perspective and proportions suddenly become apparent.
I guess my question is if that is simply the normal experience because my brain autocorrects for the already present flaws in the sketches, and finalizing it simply removes that benefit, or if there's something else I am missing.
In any case, I will go back to grinding sketches, but any specific tips or suggestions are welcome.

You are better than the frog poster. It is easy to draw birds, insects, frogs - because the observer is more forgiving. The human form is under extreme scrutiny and requires much more skill to get right.

Frogs have their own geometry, which is just as hard to pull off. It's roughly the same amount of skill, and it's easily transferable and translatable. Besides, he's posted a lot of other stuff numerous times. His art is great. He mainly just likes drawing frogs, and that's okay.

A: Hip crotch area challenge: good lighting exposing Hip flexor attached to the hip and abductor attached to the groin area below, plus difficult meme angle face position.

B: Gesture Challenge and stylization design, notice her face is not necessarily visible, her lower lip and a slight hint of her eye are enough to express a beautiful face in a hard angle. Shoulder and Hip extreme opposing slant results in extreme appeal of the figure.

i feel like my boxes and perspective have become decent enough (bad, but basic understanding, my boxes are all correct and I can draw basic 3d structures that work in perspective when checked) that the real thing that's keeping my human figures flat and formless is i don't know anatomy for shit and have never studied it because all of my drawings are "gestural" so combining the perspective and ability to draw shapes in 3d with my zero anatomy knowledge is either turning up with hideous blocky bodies with poorly aligned features/proportions or I just don't use 3d at all and it turns out formless. regarding this, saying I know boxes and bare minimum perspective, who would be the simplest author to start with for getting anatomy down?

So basically if I'm better at anatomy and perspective I can be intermediate at least?
And once I'm able to complete a single piece I can work on becoming advanced ?
Honestly if you guys would post examples of each tier it would help a lot. At least the intermediate to advanced and pro. I'm assuming pro is DaVinci or lee bermejo or something right ? I'm guessing advanced would be like maybe Jim lee tier ?

Your clothes and folds are very good, that's clear. That would definitely be qualified as high-beg to low-int. Nevertheless, your anatomy is off (though on a good track to become better), and you'll definitely need to work on your perspective. That's the weakest part of your drawing, and it flattens the whole image. A mix of low-beg and low-int, in all honesty. You've got some good stuff, but there are flaws.

Firstly, drawing from imagination when still a beg is not a good idea. Doing studies from ref is a must if you want to become better.
Secondly, why do you care where others place you on some arbitrary leveling scale? Just draw stuff and become better.

>>
>>7851626
Asking for a complete curriculum is not really possible if you're self taught. There's a famous social scientist, Lev Vygotsky, that places learn in three stages. First, the stage of knowing, which means what you're able to do on your own. Second, a stage for when learning using aid (a teacher, fellow students, books, etc), which means slowly acquiring skills to assimilate into what you've already learned. The last stage is the place of not knowing, which is what's not possible at all. Aiming for what's not possible by managing the second stage is one way of teaching yourself in any subject. Try placing stuff into categories of what you know for certain how to do, like how to draw a straight line, a circle, a cube in 3D (be critical, anon), and another category of things you don't know. Building a bridge between the two is the key.
Also, if you want to find other people to draw with, seek out a Facebook page based in your country, city or community. Then say "I love to draw, and I'm interested in learning more and becoming better. Are there anyone here up for that?"
It's that easy.

How do people apply base color on things that are not uniform or enclosed by like a big thick line? Like for example, hair that are being blown over by the wind, with tiny strands of hair blown all over the place. Some of the things I have seen are selection tools, magic wand, or just drawing the borders of the tiny hair with like a small brush to enclose it.

I feel like every time I did use like selection tools, it always had like uncolored spots or going over the lines. A lot of the coloring tutorial I see from courses just skip the actual base coloring process and went toward shading. Is there a trick? Do I need to mess around with the sensitivity of the magic wand / selection tool, or maybe I’m not handling it correctly. I am especially curious with those no lineart artstyle because I couldn’t imagine how you do base coloring without lines.
>>
Admit it, I'm the best here.

Did you use a ruler to make such long straight lines? I always struggle with them when doing similar exercises, but I doubt whether I should use a ruler or not. Idk if it's whether it's something that I'll be able to do with more practice and therefore should persist without ruler, or if the long guiding lines not being perfectly accurate defeats the point of the exercise altogether?
>>
>>7852528
Yea I did. I practice lines without them, but when doing perspective studies in particular, they make things easier because

1. They reinforce how to draw a straight line
2. They’re quicker, so you finish the study faster without having to deal with the pressure of making lines that aren’t straight

I think with perspective studies, you should use a ruler. If you’re drawing from life, ref, etc, maybe try to freehand. It’s really up to you, but work on doing them without one either way.

Here's my Keys to Drawing 3rd Lesson: Drawing a green pepper.
>>
>>7852576
Yea knowing how to start is hard. You should start by asking what type of art you want to make and how much information is necessary to do that. For example someone learning anime doesn’t need as much anatomy knowledge as someone making a marvel comic. Once you have a good idea of this then moving forward will be easier
>>
>>7852495
Seconding the other anon. These do look good, and they’re a very interesting approach to Loomis. Keep us updated!
>>

>>
>>7852579
>>7852591
Thank you! That style is actually from one of the FWAP pages but is only shown briefly. I assume most people overlook it because it's needlessly complex, but I feel like the extra details and separation of the face from the head gave me a better point of reference than simplifying
>>

I can see that you incorporated shading into your drawing; bonus points there! It also looks like you're avoiding symbol drawing, so that's good.

However, I think that you could bring out the edges of the pepper a bit more. Also, the light reflecting on the pepper isn't as apparent as it could be, IMO. Additionally, some of your shading seems to either go outside of the bounds of the pepper or not quite reach the bounds. Looking back at my attempt at this exercise (pic related), I did the same thing.

it varies, normally 1-2 times but other times it can go up to four or five
it's partly bc it's emotionally regulating, I run the bath hot so it's painful getting in but doesn't cause any lasting damage. I also feel gross in my body so bathing helps ease that discomfort. it's probably psychologically unhealthy, but it keeps me clean even when depressed so I'll take it

I tried to use my experience drawing boos and circles to draw a different circular character
I tried getting that effect I see in pictures where light reflects off of a polished surface but that stuff still escapes me. I think I should probably just stick to working on my linework for a bit. Or maybe finally read a book like loomis which keeps getting recommended to me

how do you all approach fixing underlying flaws in your process? for example, when i draw faces, i find that i often skew them because i draw the center line off or dont catch how one side is just way too big. i like adding the facial features and rendering the details, but it obviously doesnt look as good as it could if i caught those flaws earlier on.
should i be splitting my time closer to like 70-80% studying/grinding to overcome the flaws? i do find it mildly discouraging putting in more than an hour into something and it not coming out as good.

I already did, not sure what else you would want me to post. I don't have any finished work other than prebeg stuff from 3 years ago. You can have two recently failed sketches from imagination, first one is from a few days ago, second one from two months ago and I used a ref for the hair on that one. And I guess a failed value study also from 2 months ago and a Len sketch study from exactly one year ago, since those are the most "finished" drawings I have from last year.

To me, Loomis, Xiao Weichun, maybe Nakamura Seiich, and Michael Hampton, mostly because they teach basic perspective and anatomy, both go together, because you're using basic 3d shapes to represent the human body, so a face is a basic 3d shapes, same with the torso and the rest of the body, you learn basic anatomy and how to rotate 3d shapes at the same time
Just learn perspective, learn how to rotate a cube, then transform it, and then make 3d dolls
I don't really draw anime anymore, but learning how to draw a 3d doll is the hack
Ironically, I'm just using basic 2d shapes right now because I want to learn how to paint, and I don't know composition, so I'm just using the lasso tool, but I used to draw anime (pic related)

His shading and lineart are all over the place because he uses a brush with pressure tied to opacity and then proceeds to messily apply it causing it to have a dozen different shades of grey on a single area.
Fucker can shade but refuses to for some god forsaken reason. His work would look so much cleaner and more appealing if he picked 3 shades of grey for shading and stuck to them with a hard brush.

not a copymaster but if you want color focus on the color.
Your face is too green and desaturated. It's a hard image, but it's obvious that the color isn't similar, but you still proceed to draw eyelashes anyway.

I have a bit of a perfectionist streak so it’s better to just draw it than focusing on that specific thing for hours. Then I can just ask for help and fix it up.

Hey,
I’m trying to draw and color in a style similar to the pictures on the left
I’m not sure what kind of lineart or coloring/blending I should use and how to get that subtle texture.
I can’t tell if it comes from brush, the canvas/paper texture, or some effects later on
It seems pretty common in a lot of Japanese art I see on Pinterest.
I’m using CSP btw

Your replication uses an airbrush, while great, leaves a matte surface texture. Also, the light wraps around the leg and anatomy, which is why is especially visible on the knee cap.
That's just my two cents.
>>
>>7853265
Thanks a bunch
I'll ditch my blending brush and try the lower opacity one.
Also great colours man, it's looks really vibrant

Thanks, anon. You'd be surprised by how much you can learn by osmosis through doomscrolling on instagram. My algorithm is filled with rendering tutorials and color theory as of late. Not complaining.

at least not for the long term.

If you’re too miserable, then just draw the stuff you want to draw, using references.

>Props for the Caesar's legion poster
The rendering reminds me of late 90's overblown manga, so props for replicating that style. I'm not going to give crits to the style, that's up to taste.
There are a bunch of elements that aren't well put together, mostly anatomical. The shoulders looks like they pivot from a something like a latch or a hinge joint, the character has no deltoids to speak off, the right arm has a huge forearm and the muscles aren't attatched to anything. The breasts are somehow on top of the chest and halfway inside. The stomach has no organs, and the entire hip bone is a bowl. The legs aren't attached onto anything, and they are more akin to flabs of meat.
Also, the penis looks like it's stapled on, which I did find funny. The penis itself looks fine, though.
All in all, I would recommend reading an anatomy book and study construction a bit more. I'd focus on that before rendering. My redlining skills are shit, but it should illustrate what I mean well enough.

>>7853494
Dope sketches.
>>7853498
I like your rendition, anon. In my experience, it's better to keep it simple when learning to render digitally. A default round brush with changes to opacity from opaque to transparent occasionally is all you'll really need. Any brush with with a fixed opacity will do the trick, honestly. No pressure sensitivity or anything fancy. And going from a large size brush to small will keep the rendering more uniform.
>>
>>7853514
It’s wild how much I struggle with ears lmao. Thank you anyways anon I really appreciate it. Perspective is indeed tough, but I’m gonna grind it out until I get it

>>7853514
i just dislike coloring, brain doesn't hurt and it takes a lot of time. I think rinotuna also renders with the default round brush, it's just not a fun thing. I'd rather do monochrome until i gitgud before doing the more mechanical cookie cutter stuff.

>>
>>7853729
Look at the way he approaches construction of a figure >>7852655
I think you make it too hard on yourself with that thin line brush. Maybe you should use a much broader sketchy brush to block in the whole shape, and then coming down into the details of the pose step by step. Like taking out chunks from a stone block to uncover the sculpt figure in it. I know it sounds weird and esoteric, but everyone finds a personal way to do just that. Eventually you will find yours, maybe with the right brush allowing you to work loosely and fast at the first attempted shape, and another brush to refine it.

Flat, bland, unexciting. Use irl photos or professional works as well as color theory videos to learn more. This just paintbucket application with zero imagination.
>>
>>7850585
Your line work needs more variation and the shading sometimes can take the place of the lineart. The colors used are unexciting and are a sneeze away from pillow shading. (protop: don't outline the areola, blend it a bit - it makes it look like a sticker rather than a suckable part of the breast)

I'd offer edits but I am in bed and it is cozy.

Hello everyone.
While I haven't been proud of my drawing speed last year, I would like to improve on that matter this year.

However, I still have drawn some stuff, including this piece I've finished at the last day of 2025.

Considering rendering is what has been giving me lots of troubles recently, any thing to improve ?

You can't use VPNs, or TOR to try to hide your ip to ban evade in this site. That's a relatively recent policy here. That means this asshole is burning a bunch of ip addresses, maybe a range ban won't even work. It's an attack on the site, weird that he chose this board for that. I guess he's focusing on this thread because it won't bump having reaching the post limit, so he thinks he's being stealthy. Though he's creating threads too.
Just report and don't reply.

NTA. Don't be afraid on using lines to contour lines and markers. I personally like to use them alot for mapping light and texture when I'm drawing portraits. It looks decent, but you might want to focus on linework. It drags the drawing a down, which is a shame. It could be great with a little clean-up.
Expressive linework is everything, even when it's just sketches. I'm still working on that part, too.

>Don't be afraid on using lines to contour lines and markers.
Like actually drawing circles to show light? I'm not sure, won't that make the picture too busy?
But I agree about linework, it often comes out wonky and I just end up endlessly erasing and redrawing it.

I feel you about that one. I'm gonna let it rest and see if I can spot a better solution for that. It looks a bit disconnected, which might be a perspective error on my part.
>>7854478
Here's one of my portraits, it's very light on lines, but it should make it a bit clearer. My method is to find a brush you really "fuck" with, as the americans say, and learn it to bits. Then, it's all about using it to give the impression of light, form and texture. I personally really enjoy drawing with Bristles-5 Flat and Pencil-5 Tilted.
Long strokes and using my shoulder also helps alot, mechanically, when making linework.
>>
>>7854158

I don't get it neither. These sorts of tables and categories are borderline infantile and obsessive. It really doesn't matter. Just draw and have fun.

>>7854239

People are completely delusional about their progress and the vastness of skills they do not yet possess. To compare your skill on a metric can be motivating and helps you hone your skills according to a few basic fundamentals that need to be there.

It's not required to use or obsess over lists, but they surely have a place.

It's a general contruction and perspective issue. It's not by much, but the right eye is placed on top of the skin, and it should sit inside the eye socket. Place it a bit further back, and make sure to leave some more room for the cheek bone and socket.
Also, ever so slightly, the perspective is just a bit off.

Technically, I began in october-december 2024, but yeah. That's what happens when you do nothing else but study-draw in your spare time. In this past year, I've only made roughly 6 fully original works (that are not just black and white drawings) this year (portraits from ref are just exercises to me, it's not my goal). The rest have been studies, mostly Hampton, Bridgeman, some asian artists, copies of whatever I had near me. Perspective exercises are fun too, especially in front of the tv, when I'm doing nothing else. Cubes, cylinders, etc. I treat this as learning, I'm not vibing it.
Even my social media feeds are drawing- and painting tutorials. It's never-ending.
I also read a lot of books, which is also good. To be honest, it can be boring sometimes, but having fun is a major help, especially in the beginning.
I still can't draw cars and bikes for shit, tho.

I usually try to aim for at least 2 hours of pure studies, which mostly consists reading, copying and taking notes of whatever page I've reached in one of either Hampton's or Bridgeman's books. I try to aim for only 5 minutes tops per sketch and notes, which is more than enough. It's usually not in one go, I split it into two sessions of 1 hour each. I also sprinkle in some smaller sketches and drawings in, just to have some fun and try to apply whatever I've learned. They are only 20 minutes each, maybe 25-30 if I want to iterate it a bit. My portraits take the longest at roughly 30 minutes, total. If I go beyond that, I just quit it, take some notes and move onto the next one.
It's basically observe, deconstruct, build through memorization, draw, try to remember, apply to drawing at some point.
