What are some manga that excel at world building and unique concepts in general that aren't 30+ volumes long series?
>>7868585Drafting the next two storyboards. A lot of pages need dialogue that isn't placeholder. chapter 21 doesn't have any dialogue. just some visuals and background references laid out. I'll share rendered storyboards when they're doneit was kind of staggering being told I need to do more backgrounds last thread when I already knew what I was in for in these upcoming chapters. >>7868671Gunslinger Girl! Yes, I'm very biased. But it's true. Teenage girls turned into cyborgs and used to fight terrorists in Italy. Plus, each one of them have a handler, with some of them treating them like their little sister or daughter. I think it's a pretty unque concept and it was very well explored in the manga and even anime.
>>7868671The one you make. No time for distractions.
I really hate drawing background/npc characters
>>7868921Lol background characters are who I have the most fun drawing. Don't have to worry about their designs or reproducing them, I can just draw whatever silly or goofy guy or gal I want.

I have to draw backgrounds? Says who? Why can't the readers just imagine what the environment looks like? They do it all the time when they read books. Man, FUCK backgrounds, all my homies hate backgrounds. Scenery can go straight to hell.

>>7869806I'll kneel to that.
>>7869784write all the dialogue at once AND THEN draw all the characters AND THEN draw all the backgrounds once you have the words and characters on page so you can decide which panels really need a backgroundor not!
>>7869838That's also a good idea which is why I won't do it. Also I don't work that way, I need to do everything at once per panel or else I'll forget details. What I would really like is to do those pages where it's like a VN with one picture and a bunch of text on the side for the story but that's so unsatisfying as a reader that I can't bring myself to go through with it, plus with fewer pictures I'd be expected to do more detailed images which includes backgrounds so I'm back to square one.
>>7869806Like the outback?
>>7869129Woot, the pitch got accepted. Finally back to storyboarding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>>7869858you're damn right.
I just got accepted as a manga assistant while living overseas.Trial period ended today and the mangaka would like me to show up again next week. It's a no name mangaka working on his first serialization.I still can't believe it though. In these two days of trial, the mangaka is so polite and didn't comment anything about my art nor my workspeed that I thought I didn't do my job well.
>>7869901Hey nice bro. I know if I got work back from an assistant and it sucked I'd let 'em know, so congrats.
South park or family guy kind of humor?! As someone that wants to write comedy i prefer arrested development
>>7869855Well start doing it. Its much better and once you get over the initial learning phase, you'll never go back. Having all the dialogue and bubbles laid out ahead of time will allow you to focus 100% on drawing. Switching modes costs mental energy.
>>7869784>>7869806Backgrounds are a lot of fun for me. I get to turn on my inner Bob Ross and just whittle away at details.
my faces are decent but my bodies are ass. i feel like it is going to take years before i have good looking bodies and can place them in backgrounds convincingly.
>>7869901any examples of the kind of stuff you'd put in your portfolio when you looked for an assistant gig? Doesnt have to be something that you actually showed the mangaka, just something with a similar focus and level to give me an idea of what passes the standard for entry for when I start applying
>>7869901>>7870206oh and congrats of course!
>>7870206Not anyone in this thread but:Variety I guess. Both in themes and tools used. Cartoony caricature and action pose. Pencils, inks and digital. Donald Trump, Donald Duck, Don Quixote (as you think he looks like, tell a story). And nudes, both men and women. Sex not required but drawn without reference preferable. Show that you can *feel* bodies.
>>7869876Man, your values are always super good and readable. I always find it hard to push my arts values too flat blacks. Great work!
>>7870053Based and background pilled
>>7870053I think you can greatly improve your work by incorporating line weight into your backgrounds and characters. Feel free to disregard these non all encompassing changes if you feel like they do not apply to you, but it's something to keep in mind regardless.
>>7869901PYWAnd make picrel an anime girl or boy so we can know how good you are so people can make their own judgments on the skill level
>>7869901Grats, good luck
>>7869916Early South Park imo. Stories with stakes that matter, characters are consistent and care about the world they live in and its consequences, things stay relatively grounded in-universe but has an "anything goes" and "nothing is sacred" mentality without sacrificing the setting's integrity.
>>7870090Best advice I can give is do it like those posable figures, draw the body out in shapes and tweak/add detail until you've got a character drawn. It's what I do for body types I'm not good at.
>>7870319Hey anon, thanks for taking the time to look at my work. I had thought about putting darks in many of the same places that you had done, but was worried that including all of it would make the city seem like it was too dark possibly(?), especially since it's supposed to still be early afternoon in this shot. That said, I'll definitely incorporate some of the shading you did here, especially around the windows and outcroppings at the very least. Thanks again.
>>7870344I see. The final thing I would also recommend other than continuing to practice figure drawing accuracy is that you put more detail and variety in your hair and clothing folds. Since it seems like you often struggle with those as an author, it would improve the overall quality of the drawings without too much effort.
>>7870332>Early South Park imoNah, go current south park. Just make Trump small dick jokes and I guarantee you, you will find an audience.
>>7869921I'd be willing to but I can't visualize the story unless I have pictures to go with the words.
>>7870354Confucius say: if a joke told once is funny once, that same joke told many times is funny every time.
>>7870319I agree with you and think this is an improvement but, and I know this is semantic, I wouldn't really call simply pushing your values like this "line weight".
Made a goal to finish a page a week. I finally realized it's better to leave the bulk of the work for the weekends and the easier, smaller bits to weekdays.
>>7870206Other than the obvious technical skill, make sure your artwork is "complementary" to the mangaka's.It doesn't have to be identical in genre or artstyle, it just have to support the overall atmosphere. If the mangaka's artstyle looks like Abara or Biomega, and you send a portfolio that looks like Berserk's Lost Children Arc, you still have a chance even if the genre is different, because the overall feel is similar: dark, gritty, and dim.Conversely, if you send a portfolio that looks like Knights of Sidonia, you might get rejected because even thought the genre is identical, the atmosphere is totally antagonistic. In fact, that's how I got this job.I was initially applying to assist an Isekai-Shonen-Battle Manga, but then the employee (Kodansha's editor) referred me to this Sci-Fi mangaka instead, even thought my portfolio didn't have anything resembling Sci-Fi art.One more thing, make sure you have completed at least 1 chapter of your own manga and attach them together with your portfolio.I wouldn't get this job if hadn't the editor asked me to read for my ero doujin.>>7870328Picrel is what I sent when I applied for a mangaka who will serialize an Isekai-Shonen-Battle Manga, but then I got referred to a Sci-Fi mangaka instead because the employee (Kodansha's editor) feels like my artstyle would better suitable for this Sci-Fi mangaka.

If I need to change the perspective for dramatic purposes I also would draw a new BG for that

>>7871090This is based on a k-mart in my hometown that has been abandoned for the last decade. The land is terrible. From what I understand it's a paved over landfill. At least that's what I was told as a kid. Every couple years someone shows up and attempts to redevelop it. They all give up.My town is a dump. You'll still see signs protesting how industry giants poisoned our land. Decades after guys like IBM left. When I was a kid these kind of local legends really fueled ideas about hauntings and stuff. Along with the intensely foggy mornings, I swear to god I live in the closest thing to an American Inaba
>>7871102Pave paradise, put up a parking lot.orBut my pretty countryside Had been paved down the middle, by a government that had no pride.Plenty of songs about this, midwest anon
>>7871108Nta but maybe it effects foundations and running pipes under the ground or something, depends on what you'd be trying to build
>>7871108>>7871133This place was chosen as a landfill by IBM because it was a swamp. IBM didn't expect anyone to build on this land. I think the town wanted to cover up this blemish sitting near main street. AKA near the local highschool, and the library. Even if it wasn't a landfill. the swampy ground is probably bad for a building to sit on long term. The parking lot and surrounding roads are warped and bumpy. its such a large parking lot that doing constant maintenance on it is impossible.>>7871115>midwest anonThis is upstate new york. For a little more history that no one asked forOur county was built off the back of a large scale shoe manufacturer called the Endicott-Johnson corp. Who had thousands of houses built to support what was a 20,000 man workforce at their peak. George F Johnson financed practically everything that our county has through his "Square deal". Our schools, Our parks, the fucking carousels in the parks. The big city in our county has an arch calling it "the home of the square deal" Their company and their employee policies were incredibly progressive for the time. And for a long time they were the pride of our county.I have framed photos of my town during that time and It's incredibly prosperous looking. These days things here are far more grim. I've met local figures who helped build what we have, and historians who dedicated their lives to pass on what those people experienced. They seemed to lost a lot of their enthusiasm for our home. The guy who founded famous local speedie-fest drove me home in an uber last year.

>>7871611wait... i dont get the panelling. does the guy pick up the helmet and put it down and pick it up again? or is it backwards?
>>7871696I guess it ended up a little confusing. This would be the right reading order.
>>7871702Oof, I don't think anyone would read it that way
>>7871707Maybe... I can just move the last panel a little more to the center.
>>7871702>that orderWait. Wait wait wait. All this time I thought you were a left to right paneling comic. Is Sunburn actually a right to left? Cos if not you can't just do a complete switcheroo like that.
>>7871714Even though it looks more like a comic, the intention was always for it to be a manga. So yeah, it's read right to left.
>>7871716I think even in manga you are supposed to read the two smaller panels top to bottom and then move to the left long panel. My suggestion is to make the tall panel be on the right and the two small panels be on the left. Then the tall panel should be him picking up the helmet, and then he'll look at the helmet in the small panel you took.
>>7871702Anon-dono...that is not at all how that is supposed to go. Rework that, please.
>>7871726OH FUCK I GOT IT WRONG AGAIN AAAAHHHHHHH
>>7871720I pressed enter too early, since you wanted the three beat scene of him picking up the helmet, looking at it, and then putting it on, you can make 3 vertical panels with the space you have. If you do 2 small and 1 tall, then him looking at the helmet is gonna be the one of the small ones, and I think you dont want to waste that nice drawing you did. So I suggest making it 3 vertical panels. But you have to draw some more. I think theres a better way though, I'm just telling you what I would have done. For extra effect, you can have the panel where he puts the helmet on include the other two in the background, showing that when he was looking at the helmet he was in his own world and when the helmets on he's back with the others.
>>7871731Thanks anon. I tried moving the panels around in a way that I wouldn't need to redraw. But there was no way to make it work. I was going to delete the first panel in which he picks up the helmet and leave only the last two. But now that I'm looking at your edit, I think it would be better to put in some more work and include all three. I'm going to... to... Draw some more...

>>7871775There are westerners who genuinely love anime and manga for what it is and actually want to contribute to it. Its people with "modern" sensibilities that want to neuter it and water it down/censor/change it to fit global appeal that need to be kept out.Besides, Japan needs some help since they are being overtaken by Korea and China as far as comics go because they're stagnating too much and beholden to tired tropes like Isekai.

>>7871782Most anime doesn't look like that.>>7871791>There are westerners who genuinely love anime and manga for what it is and actually want to contribute to it. That's fine. They really don't need help. Besides, I rather we just improve our own industry then try to get into the asian one. Concept art for a palace. I tried to incorporate the Kins (pumpkin peoples) gourd houses in the design. The common house for most of the rural parts of the Kingdom is a giant gourd typically grown on the hearth tree. The hearth tree is the cental tree every town has that remains dominant till its woken up to make various items like tables, chairs, railing, etc. The towns bid for different government contracts to use their hearth tree to create various goods. It is heavily regulated. These huge central trees also continue to grow and more trees get planted/grafted to the root systems. From these trees, large structures are formed. >>7871875He said it was only the lips. And I fixed it.
>>7871875>>7871877Actually, you're right. I hadn't seen more people had replied to my post.
>>7871863you are very good at designing and drawing buldings. Looking foward to see the finished work
>>7868585I tried out the new panel tool in the krita test build. its actually kind of amazing.
>>7871753>character gets a live one, boys
>>7871806>I rather we just improve our own industryAmerica doesn't have a comics industry. It has comic-shaped commercials for DC and Marvel but that's not nearly as profitable as manga.
>>7871900Mostly personal preference, but I'd go with thinner panel border lines.
>>7871764All you need now is some line weight.
>>7871898Thank you. I hope it turns out good. My rendering skills are iffy at best.
>>7871927the new tool uses the rectangle tool to make panels. its as easy as just cutting a square and it closes in automatically
>>7871949That is pretty sick. Also makes me think>previous page is a character about to use psycho slashing technique>this page is just a drawing of the surprised/scared character about to get hit by the move with panel borders cutting up the picture>next page is the character in pieces
>>7871877pretty sure it was more than just the lips
>>7871953Finally some sauce. >>7871764 hope you' are taking notes. Tones don't have to always be literal, the beauty of their freedom is in their ability to evoke feelings with shapes, lines and contrast!
>>7871806>I rather we just improve our own industry then try to get into the asian oneAnd I'd rather have a job today than maybe have one in a few decades if we all just try hard enough!!
>>7871949also the krita test build has a new text fill function for shapes. It seems devs have finally been adding basic tools for manga/comic creators recently. albeit extremely slowly
>>7872014What is your comic called again? And where is it hosted? Trying to keep track of all the (maybe 4) anons that do semi-complicated backgrounds. Everyone here does backgrounds of some kind, (since you kind of have to in a comic to show where the characters are) but you can tell who in /mmg/ really enjoys the background work.
>>7871953>>7871961I genuinely don't like the way that looks. I prefer mine.
>>7871962>>7871925This rhetoric is why we don't have such industry.
>>7872070>its the little peoples fault, not the multibillion dollar global media titans that we surely can boss around
>>7872014looking great!
>>7872078A japanese would say "ganbare!" and make their own industry. You know they didn't just move to america and start working for disney.
>>7872179Fucking what? The manga industry rides on the shoulders of the megacorps like Kodansha and Kadokawa. These weren't some grassroots indie groups, they are the Jap equivalents of Disney and Warner Bros. Japanese creators are just lucky that their overlords' strategies are more amicable to small creators than ours. If their publishers decided today to steer the market into the ground like America's did, there would be nothing more the little guys over there could or would do about it than us aside from perhaps their shared cultural and ethnic bond that may be the only thing keeping their corpos from doing exactly that. And judging from recent events, that may be coming to an end soon.
>>7872201>>7872179There is also a major culture difference between west/east comics. In the west, comics are taken less seriously as a medium, often seen as 'superhero stuff, for kids'. In the east, manga is extremely diverse in its stories, and people of all ages read it. Westerners are also much more averse to black/white comics, meaning indie creators have a harder time doing solo projects without a colorist (or have to take spend a lot of extra time on doing color instead of writing more story). If someone has enough capital, they could try to create a similar industry in the west, but it's extremely high risk and low reward. After all, they could simply just adapt eastern manga/anime instead for more guaranteed profits.
>>7872028It's a matter of taste! You are the author of your vision, after all.>>7872026It's true. Backgrounds aren't just a thing to me, it's where my characters live and exist. If I neglected to show that then i've failed to tell the story the best I can.
>>7872213In my experience with readers, print manga may be selling more than Western comics in the West, but the buyers don't actually read them. They are put on a shelf as decoration while they watch the anime adaptation or just listen to some tuber summarize it. I know several people who have bought entire collections of shit like Spy x Family and haven't read past the first volume. They are fans of the "franchise" and the manga is just another piece of merchandise. This is another reason it's an uphill battle for Western comic artists, because the quality of your story or art don't really mean much to audiences anymore, it's the power of marketing that makes a hit, much more than previous eras. If you can't get an anime adaptation, you can forget about success in the West.
>>7872215This is nice, some of the best in the thread in fact
>>7872215love the art style
>>7871791japan is losing to korea and china in comics because those two countries are better at making slop. There are still plenty of interesting manga being made but interesting manga does not appeal to the rest of the world nearly as much as yaoi slop or aura slop.
>>7872070No, the "comics are just a kids medium and it's all capeshit anyway" attitude of the masses is why.
>>7872213>In the east, manga is extremely diverse in its stories>isekai, shonen, boys loveWell that's more than just superheroes at least so I guess you're right>Westerners are also much more averse to black/white comicsIs that why manga does gangbusters in the west? >>7872225>I know several peopleAnecdotal evidence isn't admissible in a court of anons.
>>7872028I get the "appeal" of the change cuz the eyes of your male characters are tiny and they just look like Boomhauer. the changed ones are more proportional and make the character look younger. maybe the emotion isnt being conveyed correctly (even though the original just looks completely stonefaced. and the changed one looks more pensive)
>>7872278I don't think there's a way to shake them off of that stance. "Comics are for kids because comics are for kids because comics are for kids because comics are for kids" etc etc etc etc etc ad infinitum and it just becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.
both industries have their problems, but japan at least gave us amazing stories at the cost of some human lives. Corporations like marvel and DC don't want interesting stories because then they'd have to pay the artists what they deserve or risk the artist going solo. They want money, so they decided to squeeze comics by making them stay in the same few stories and marketing them to kids for merchendise. Japan decided to squeeze manga for every yen they could by finding great artists and working them like slaves until they drop. They at least allowed the artists to write their own stories, so its a little better. But now we're in the industry plant era where dogshit like CSM gets pushed as they prepare for a post one-piece world.
>>7872283>isekai, shonen, boys loveTry reading manga that's not out of a shonen magazine.>Is that why manga does gangbusters in the west? No, it's why the comic industry in the west is almost entirely in color. Manga does well in the west only among weebs and anime watchers.
>>7872213Please write USA when you mean the USA. My european hellhole has plenty of indie comics festivals and comics are fairly respected as an artform of their own to deal with any subject.
>>7872295Irrelevant
>>7872285don't forget comics and manga still involve reading......and please don't ask about the state of literature
>>7872285It's time you nerds learn to write books like real ADULT men, not manchildren playing with crayons.
>>7872284>and make the character look youngerThat's one of the issues I have with it. He looks younger and a little feminine.
>>7872297At this point it would amaze me if anybody is reading any comic at all in 10 years. The amount of illiteracy seems to be going up every single year and even if that weren't, everybody's attention spans seem to be getting fried. Reading a simple comic chapter is going to be considered a laudatory achievement at some point.
>>7872301Disagree. It makes him more appealing and expressive like a real character.>>7872284Boomhauer is an apt comparison. The art in KotH was not good, and the show was carried on the voice cast, which you do not have.
>>7872302>alphoomers are going to have a trend eventually about "rawdogging" a whole 30 pages without looking at their phone or second tablet more than twice per page
>>7872301Third party anon jumping in, I have to disagree as a potential reader. He looks way more appealing to engage with as a character in the redo. It's your comic in the end of course, but I'm just giving you my initial eyeballs' impression when contrasting the two.
never be afraid to draw detailed or emoting eyes, so much emotion is in our eyes and it will improve your story without needing words.
>>7872301>eyelash trimprobably because whoever edited gave the guy massive eyelashes. but I mean no one expects every young man to be the Marlboro Man. It even gives you the opportunity to change the guys appearence as the story progresses
>>7872201The doujin scene is pretty strong at least. Even in your hypothetical those events are attended well enough to still warrant participation from small creators. In contrast places like LA where they are advertised as artist havens theres no real local strong market for small times creators(except some niche stores that are scattered about)
>>7872323Not just eyes, but there are many other subtleties in nonverbal communication such as slight hand gestures, body language, how characters react to one another through subtle movements, how people carry themselves, etc.But many people have problems just properly constructing the body with correct proportions, never mind slight or subtle differences from character to character to really define them more.
>>7872323 Personally, I don't really like the way expressions are done in most anime/manga. To me, the more subtle the better.
>>7872325>>7872350>>7872323>>7872315>>7872304this place is now worse then a reddit art hugbox. this is legitimately knowledgeable anons wasting their time on a someone who has proven time and time again across /ic/ to be a talentless retard. what the fuck are you guys doing?
>>7872390You clearly have never been on Reddit. They are way worse than /ic/.
>>7872390because you think helping people costs you something and that you need to get something in return. Whereas it takes me ten seconds to look at someone comic and give my thoughts
>>7872294>Manga does well in the westAnd it's doing better than comics, cope your way out of that.
>>7872390>wasting their timeI contribute from time to time when I'm taking a mental 5 min break from drawing. It's not that often.>proven time and time again across /ic/ to be a talentless retardHe drew worse before, he draws better now. I like seeing people get better. Barring a few very select anons who don't seem like they like making comics (or even drawing as a hobby at all) to begin with, everybody here is doing more and more advanced things. I like going to an /mmg/ anon's work and compare their first and most recent chapters. Oftentimes there is a very marked improvement.
>>7872390What, exactly, do you think these threads are for if not to post work and get/give feedback, critique, and criticism on other people's work? And even at that, what is with this weird, recent trend of people just casting a net and mass replying to a bunch of posts, some of which are completely unrelated? I posted this >>7872350 and it was generalized info in regard to another post and not directed at anyone's work in particular. It wasn't even directed at the guy drawing the space dude.
>>7871753
>>7872432Altarusia anon, I am going to confess I am having a hard time trying to understand what is going on here, especially since the bottom left panel seems to be flipped 90 degrees.
>>7872433It will make sense after I put the expository dialogue
>>7872431>weird, recent trendIt's not weird or recent, it's shitposting and people should have just ignored that dude.
>>7872301Not that I draw guys with huge lashes myself, but men irl have longer lashes than women.
>>7872390anons are barely posting anything as it is. I dont have much to choose from besides sitting here staring at a dying thread
>>7872441>anons are barely posting anything as it is.There's nothing wrong with a slow thread. /mmg/ is normally pretty slow. People are drawing.
>>7872026It's not hosted anywhere yet and it also doesn't have a name yet, sorry.
>>7872432your panels are all wonky
Retard here, in this page the sfx it's rumble if im not mistaken, if you were to this in english would you write rumble each time like this page or just 1 word going vertically/angled ??? also is it cringe if i put the text vertically sometimes?
>>7872460I would simply not put in any SFX at all were it my comic. I won't use Japanese SFX because I'm not Japanese, but I sure as hell won't use english SFX either. If I had to though, then I'd just write rumble a few times.
>>7872070That's nice buddy, but many people have tried this "let's just make our own industry good" thing and it's still shit. It isn't from a lack of trying. There are many factors at play, it isn't as simple as just giving it an honest shot.Comics are hard enough to make money with even in japan. It's hardly taking the easy road, it's just going where there is still a road.In any case, practice what you preach.
>>7872465yeah i feel the same about using jap sfx, but i feel like most of the time it doesnt work that well when is written in english as it kinda litters the page with too much text or it doesnt look that good, pic related it doesnt look good imo.
>>7872460If I was writing this in english I probably just wouldn't have sfx like that at all. It doesn't work the same. ゴゴゴ does not have an english equivalent, just writing "rumble" is only a description of what it's depicting, not the sound itself. Plus it doesn't convey the ominous feeling that ゴゴゴ conveys at all. You can't view sfx as being 1:1 between languages, and if you try to transpose a japanese style of sfx into your english-language comics it's going to feel off.
>>7872473its truly over....
>>7872460>>7872469Its because as a native English speaker (or really proficient in it) your mind immediately recognizes them as words and text to be read. For a lot of people who don't know Japanese (or really, most Asian languages are like this) the actual characters are so far removed from romantic languages, that the actual text just sort of fades into the background as design elements.I use relatively small sound effects, but large English letters just become a distraction for most people.
>>7872475What KAPOW do you mean BAM? You don't think CRACK that these large english KABOOM sfx words are totally non-distracting CRUNCH to the readership SCREECH?
>>7872307When was the last time anyone here read at least 30 pages of a comic or book without letting yourselves be distracted by something on your phone in-between reading?
>>7872477Me last week....? 30 pages, especially if it's something that's super light like a comic, doesn't take a long time at all. I'm not trying to count the hairs on the main character's head, here.
>>7872460If it seemed appropriate, I would try to capture what the actual sound might be>grrrrnnn>krmmbleStuff like that
>>7872460It doesnt matter how much we try to make our onomatopeas good ,it will never reach the same aesthetic of the japanese. Sad.
>>7872477I can pick up several volumes of a manga and read them all at once, back to back, with no distractions. If it is a particularly good story, the only distraction may literally be me going down to the book store to pick up more to read, or hunting the manga down online to read more.
>>7872468>many people have tried this "let's just make our own industry good" thing and it's still shitOnly because the people trying didn't make good enough stories
>>7872476Those were from comics made for kids. Well I guess OPM is too, but they do kids media different down there.
>>7872476This post is the result of GOGOGOGOGO someone who has to make comics in JIRIRIRIRIRIRI~ English because that's all he speaks, but has never read a single DONDON English language comic and got all his knowledge of them from 70s-era HYOOOOOOOOO memes.
>>7872480Problem is, we don't have a universally understood onomotopeia for an ominous feeling, like ゴゴゴ is. We only really have onomotopeia for literal sounds, not so much concepts. The sfx in that drawing is not describing the sound it's making but the feeling it's evoking.>>7872484I'm not better than those who have tried. I'm not going to kid myself. If the best alpinists in the world can't scale this mountain, why would I, an amateur in comparison, think I have a chance?
>>7872477Yesterday. You sound like you feel attacked.
>>7872492I am. I can't draw for 5 minutes without checking my phone to see if one of the 5 to 10 threads I have up have moved an inch or if I get an idea for a post to make while drawing or any other excuse to look at my phone.
>>7872497Me. are we brain damaged from lead or what
>>7872490That's a good point, English is more literal or at least the way we use it is more literal.
>>7872498For me it's ADHD and online being my main source of social interaction.
>>7872490Likely comes from Kabuki tradition, and I would say kabuki theater is much more like a live action comic book than a movie or cartoon is thanks to the pacing, scene framing and overall limitation of the stage forcing creative solutions to convey ideas
Gonna start chapter 19 tomorrow. Hoping to finish the cover and 2 pages this week. :)
>>7869901Where do you even look for gigs like these? Is knowing Japanese required or do some of these artists speak English too?
>>7872585NTA but ganmo.I wouldn't count on anybody knowing english. You might not necessarily need to SPEAK japanese, but you'll probably need to be able to understand written instructions.
>>7872538Read the first arc till the football battle. Your comic is really fun to read, your humor reminds me a bit of my own. Lets see how things will turn. Also peter design reminds me law hero. Honestly I like how your characters looked more simple there, Im still not used to how "bimbo" they look now in your recent artstyle.
>>7872477it is supposed to be completely typical to read a book for hours straight
>>7872477I can't. Not because of a low attention span, but because I'm anxious about wasting my time as an adult and need to catch up to my peers after wasting my life.
>>7872477I never had that problem and I have insane ADHD
>>7872598Crazy that I popped my ultimate ability with this page. It gets posted every time someone does a read through of the early stuff>I like how your characters looked more simple there, I'm still not used to how "bimbo" they look now in your recent artstyle.I definitely want some better balance with how the characters look/act. The sexual element has its place, but it's not supposed to be so indulgent. I've been constantly readjusting upcoming character designs because I'm unsure how far I want to go with certain characters. Some characters are drawn differently now because I wasn't drawing them as intended before. Medli used to look a lot skinnier because I couldn't draw fat people well.>>7872477I've been rereading Vagabond and Death on the Nile. I usually read with music on which you could consider a distraction.
>>7872598You know what, and I'm glad at least someone can enjoy it because I didn't.

Tips for drawing action scenes?
>>7872889I made my own at the size of my pages (or bigger) and saved it as a file that I use as needed. I find it easier than a brush because you dont need 5 extra brushes clogging your toolbar, just use clipping to cut out shapes from the tone layer. You can make screentones by scratch easily and you probably want to create a set that you will use forever so you save yourself time. I found this guide a long time ago and I tried to make three screentone sheets that match the 10%, 20%, and 70% Or you can download screentone brushes from the csp shop, this looks alright https://assets.clip-studio.com/en-us/detail?id=2009924
This isn't perfect, but I'm beginning to actually enjoy how my art looks (after leaving it to cool a few days - I always hate my art after I've just finished it)If I keep applying myself and drawing smartly, I might be able to make something really good.
>>7873053keep it up!
>>7872889This is how I do most of my toning.

>>7873494not them, but i started reading, and this is so good. this is very rare for me, but i really like the whole cast, they’re all just so well written. and i fell a little in love with manny. his expressions are wonderful. i was trying to think how it felt, and experiencing it feels a little like i’ve gotten the treat of stumbling on a very early lost naoki urasawa serial with a dash of hellsing. also backgrounds mean so much to me too, in experiencing the world where your characters live. i’m so glad you craft them so thoughtfully and beautifully in tandem with your people. seriously fantastic work.
>>7873519Aw, y'ain't gotta gas me up... Since the setting is down to earth and not a "fantasy" world, the challenge was in making it feel distinct. Immersion is important to me, so I made sure that even allegorical set pieces weren't just something like a "wacdonalds"- I felt like even they should have their own world specific counterpart. It's a small thing I think matters a lot. The amount of lore this story gets mindboggling and sometimes I feel like i'm balancing several grenades on the tip of my nose.
>>7873564christ that’s cool..i keep drawing my favorite characters from a series that sucked me in a couple years ago and have completely deep-dived into the world which was so vivid and alive it’s not released me from exploring it, yet. there’s just so much..and you can go as intricate as you like. and this is just me trying through a thousand pieces to understand someone else’s world-building, it’s crazy there’s someone here who is actually with that same attentiveness and care in the author’s seat, summoning up one of these whole wholly unique world-things that’s swallowed me for years. arghh it’s just too cool. >haha sorry i’ll not bug you any more, i know responding takes up drawing time
>>7873494whats your gutter size?
>>7873581I had to stop myself from somehow mentioning anything about Breaking Bad twice, and now I failed. BWOOOOWWW>>78736171-1.3 cm for large gutters, .4 mm for small ones. There isn't really a standard other than going wide for horizontals and thin for verticals, it seems like everyone kinda just fudges it in their own way? Same with border width.
>>7873634those are the same as mine. i just copied dragonballs dimensions. this format just plain looks better. I dont care if mine never gets printed (and takes way longer to make) it still looks legit.
>>7873494This is genuinely excellent. It's very rare to see someone who can both draw and write well. Have you put any thought into print publishing? Not that I'd know where to start with that.
>>7873647It just works.>>7873764I wanted to make some copies for myself, maybe for my friends if they ask (one book through mixam sits around 50$) I haven't taken the jump even though I think things should turn out okay I get weird cold feet about doing the whole thing, I'm a shut in hermit. It's also a vanity project so I don't have any goals doing anything that would take me away from it including becoming a serial author or anything like that, this is also the reason I haven't put much more into any of my other side projects. And then even after the story is done there are plans for spinoffs so i'm not getting out of this chair so to speak. It's all fine. I'm more or less resigned to staying small time, so long as the books still end up in my hands one day I don't care how they get there I'll be over the moon.
>>7873826>(one book through mixam sits around 50$)Bro, that's dumb to get just one printed. At minimum you should get like 50 printed. I think there are also way better options for just getting single books printed. You could go through Ka-Blam/Indyplanet, or (more preferably) Comix Wellspring.
>>7873952yooooo these should be included in the thread copypaste. i just stopped working for the day now I suddenly wanna keep going
>>7873955I imagine they never got added because people here are often more interested in just getting their foot in the door to a place where they're going to get their works in Japanese publications. For some, it is probably more likely to just print your stuff on your own, depending on what you want to do with it.You should look up which places print via offset printing, and which do print-on-demand. The latter is generally for lower quantity, like if you want to print like, 1 or 10 or 20 or whatever copies, for you and/or your friends. Offset printing is more for larger volume, often really only getting big discounts if you're printing hundreds or even thousands of copies of a book. I wouldn't even print at Mixam unless you want to print at least a couple hundred copies.Ka-Blam/Indyplanet is probably the best if you just want a copy or two, but I think Comix Wellsprings seems to be the go-to printer for comics like this these days. Their minimum is only 20 copies, and when I just dump in numbers like a 200-page black and white manga dimensions book, it is only about $10 per book. Anyway, when I start to get my books done, this is who I plan on using because they seem like the best. The only other one I'd even consider is Printninja, but they were originally based out of China, but I think they have US facilities now, so they might be a lot easier to deal with if problems arise. You can also get free packets/samples from almost all of these self publishing companies for things like paper weight, how color looks on certain paper, etc, so you can hold physical samples, pages, and examples in your hands to see how they look.

New manga contest, add it to the list
I'm again losing my momentum to commissions and paying bills. The material reality of my life holds me back more than anything else.
I'm so bad at shading, I've spent the past 3 fucking hours working on this. Erasing, shadings, erasing, shading, using multiple references. Nothing just seems to look right.

>>7874354i dunno wtf any of that is. The first thing you can do is show me what you've got so far. that will tell me the level you are at.for example if you havent even downloaded a drawing program, I think you should stick to google
Any tips for planning out panels? I have really bad ADD and struggle to plan literally anything without the assistance of drugs.I compensate by making shit up as I go, which I think I am okay at. It doesn't look very professional though. Here is my attempt at fighting, which is just a page worth of drawings arranged to kind of make sense.
>>7874396Make a panel small panel showing the switch from the kick to frog squat. Could just be her legs with a motion line backwards.
>>7874396Looks to me like your favorite manga might be Kimetsu no Yaiba. Here's my tip: pick any chapter that has both dialogue and action scenes, then put the pages into a drawing program and erase the art so only the panel structure is left. Also pool them in a macro image so you can switch back and forth between individual pages and the whole chapter. Ponder them deeply to get a feel of how the panels are arranged. Then go back to the actual chapter and pay attention to how the paneling relates to the content. 'Understanding Comics' is a go-to quick read if you want some theoretical pointers (you can find it on readcomiconline).Paneling is just like drawing in the sense that you already mostly understand the conventions from encountering so many examples, just like you already understand what a human figure should look like. When I did the erase thing I realized that I use way too few panels, for instance.
>>7874363Put your trip back on kiddo

How long have your story been brewing in your head? Mine started around 7 years ago. I would always think "maybe one day...". But the truth is that I never though I'd ever commit to it for real. Picrel is from 2019.
>>7874363>>7872860Why waste your effort forming a strong opinion on the work when you don't care to be specific about your issues with it?>>7874331Can't help but feel like the composition makes him seem kind of small. I think he should take up more space on the page. or you should include a background that compliments his stature. The light source being behind him would be a classic way to make him seem more menacing aswell.>>7874354thread op
>>7874396Well since you already have your drawing scanned, what you can do is just open a blank page on whatever program you use like PS or CSP(even MS Paint though it might be more annoying) and just move the drawings around to see whats more pleasing to the eye and what flows better for the story telling. Like I just did this example I shifted the two drawings around and separated them into two panels. But if you dont think that works just move the drawings around until you find something thats pleasing. And once you have that figured out you can try to see what would be the most pleasing way to approach the actual paneling. My pic related is barebones and in theory gets the job done but you might want some flair. You dont gotta approach it linearly. Sometimes you an make a really good drawing and build you paneling around that.
>>7874537Heres another example. Here I didnt even need to move anything around, I just saw the drawings as they were and saw an opportunity to separate them so it can work as two pages. Again play around and have fun with it. Just make sure the story can still flow. Although in your other example >>7874442 I would avoid adding text so early if your still unsure of paneling. Save that for the end
>>7874425i dont use trips homo
>>7874465welp, youre gunna need a character, a storyboard, a narrative, a plot, designs, maybe colors, a setting, a conflict, motivations, compositions, maybe a script, some set up, some payoff, a couple set pieces, some conclusion, maybe a continuation. then your good to go
>>7874469sometime around 2001
>>7874469Over a decade ago but I never felt like I was good enough to pull it off until recently, biggest issues were imagining what should happen between larger story beats and trying to figure out dialogue, so I mostly had to be content with playing scenes out in my head. At least waiting so long gave me plenty of content to work with as the story developed in my mind.
>>7874543>>7874537Okay, I took some smut I made and tried what you recommended on it.I'm surprised how easy this was. It's not great, but I could probably add more sketches to this as I made it to tweak as I go. Thanks!
>>7874603Once you get into the rhythm of things you'll feel a sense for paneling more naturally. Like everything art related, you just keep doing it to get better at it.
>>7874480Is that all it takes?
>>7874660Nta but if you mean the post about shading, the guy in the pic is like eye level with the viewer so on a subconscious level he feels about as tall as us or whoever he's looking at which might be what they meant by him looking "small." One suggestion I'd make is to have the top border go behind the top of his hair and the side borders go behind his arms a bit so hes popping out of the panel slightly. This is personal preference though, it might make him pop more but I just like stuff coming out of panels. Also try shading him so all the darkest shading is towards the middle like a light is right behind him, that might make him more imposing. In a later panel, maybe angle him so the eye level is below him looking up
>>7874480if you cant tell why its gross trash no one can help you
>>7874675oh nah dude I was commenting on the fact that he got flustered cause I said I didn't like it. Getting told "Yeah this sucks, this is boring, I don't like this" is the most normal negative thing to hear ever. He can't handle that real smoke.
>>7874685It's interesting to see your storyboarding process, dingleburied australian man
>>7874685H?
Hi guys, first time posting on this site ever, so apologize if I broke some rules/conventions I wasn't aware of. Nice to see that there's a board for something as niche as making manga. Here's a 2 page manga I made a few days ago. Any better way to increase the contrast/visibility of the background, or better paneling/composition? Thank you!
>>7875029Everything seems to fit together but the faces are uncanny.
>>7873978hmm come to thinkI didnt like that speech bubble formact. Will change later
>>7875065forgot pic
>>7875029Nice panel variety and compositions. I don't think you need that greyscale orange pic to signify the round thing is an orange. You should probably have the therapist gesture towards the plate instead, it's less jarring.
>>7873975I honestly dont give a shit about le grorious nippon publishing meme. but my real question is... do they really expect me to draw over a fucking 5 x 7.5 canvas? the whole point of doing B4 comic paper is being able to photocopy it into multi sized prints. apparently wellspring doesnt do that.
>>7875029If you make an object important the worst thing you can do is minimize narrative value by not providing at least one panel where it is the sole focus. Panel 4 on the first page comes close but the focus is drawn to the girl's expression instead. Doing this would eliminate the need to point it out on the following page. Clarity is king.
>>7875009There's not much process. I write the dialogue on the page and try to picture the layout, then draw in the panel borders, then do the sketches. There's usually a lot of deleting and redoing. I think I tried 20+ different compositions for that bottom right panel, and I'm not even sure I'll keep the current one. It might need to be bigger, at least.>>7875025もちろんです>>7874907He seems to handle it fine though.
>>7875029Well, for the drawn backgrounds you can thicken areas of shadow with black fills. That hatching in particular is a bit too thin to be effective, you could definitely push that more. Of course, you'll need to adjust values throughout the whole page to keep it balanced.
>>7875093>do they really expect me to draw over a fucking 5 x 7.5 canvas? No. Even with manga drawn in analog they draw big and shrink it down.
>>7875029I think getting comfortable having things be completely white or using black ink/ darker tones for shading instead of the overuse of light to mid tones. It should fix the issue of having characters be more distinguishable from the background.
>>7875166i mean.. it says right there to make sure to delete the template layer before saving
>>7875186Uh, okay bro. I was just telling you that mangaka aren't drawing on a 5 x 7.5 canvas. They draw big, and the publisher prints it small.
>>7875029In the bottom left panel of the page on the right, I'd put the orange on the table in the middle foreground with her staring at it in the background so it's more in focus
i cant even trace a 3d model and im this close to ending it all
>>7875333Just wait for AI to improve.
>>7875333Think about how many other people also did this, found out how hard it is, and gave up. All you have to do to be better than 99% of them is just to keep pushing
>>7875373AI is winning manga contests, there's no reason to wait.
>>7875402manga contests proved judges don't know what the fuck is critically good just like the rest of you limp dick faggots
>>7875402That requires some ability to trace/photobash, which anon says he does not have. So he'll have to wait and hope for AI to improve, or start practicing harder so he can produce a presentable photobashed AI manga.

Is it worth buying a screen tablet to ink? Anyone can vouch if it makes a difference? I've used a large enough screenless tab all my life but only in manga do I feel the need to make my lines cleaner and I can't seem to do that well. I can't make second guesses because I'm poor.
>>7875432As a portable tablet-only, I am once again shilling the Galaxy Tab S9 FE. I used to use a Huion XP22 or something years ago, it was ok but really I'd recommend a reasonably cheap but not shitty android tablet. I use CSP but you have free options too like Krita which is about as fully featured as CSP. If you're interested, google something "2026 best affordable android art tablets" and watch/read reviews of whatever potentially catches your eye.
>>7875432I inked for years on a small tablet then switched to a screen tablet in 2020. I would say that while they feel different to use, I wouldn't argue one is better than the other. It's just down to what you like more. And one is a lot more expensive, so that's a factor. If I still had a regular tablet I'd probably still use it sometimes, with it on my lap with my feet kicked up like I used to.
>>7875432If you do a lot of inking, it makes it a bit easier. Placing the line in the correct place the first time is easier because you can see exactly where the line will go. If you can't get over the "disconnected" feeling of a screenless tablet, then it's worth it.But the ergonomics are still bad, you need a monitor arm/stand for it too. So the costs add up quickly. Harder to do long sessions for me on the cintiq.See if you can try out an iPad at an Apple store to see if you prefer it.
>>7875432I just use the mouse to smooth out lines.

What's your philosophy for hype moments? Do you save all your dynamic shots and pizzazz only for the finale-tier stuff to keep it special or sprinkle it throughout the story wherever it feels applicable?
>>7875745Why would you ever do the former? You'd end up with nothing but all the cool stuff at the finale and everything prior to that is neutral/milquetoast at best. Almost like you're punishing the reader for daring to slog through the entire story.
>>7875692Kek. Are you talking about what I think you are?
>>7875766I dunno I agree but I see some people give the advice not to go all out because you'll desensitize your audience by the time you get to like the climax or something
>>7875823Well that kind of thinking is misguided. Its approaching storytelling as some sort of formula when the reality is YOU as the author decide what story moments to emphasize and what not to emphasize and what kind of art is needed to achieve that.
Extremely frustrated with my poor inking skills, I know it's ultimately just a matter of practice and that I should simply look at other artists and learn from them but if anyone has any useful resources I would really appreciate some help right now. I draw every day and I rarely post here
>>7876146I just study pages from the comics I want mine to look like. its easy. the writing portion has been more time consuming than any
Drafted the first page of my project today.I'm new to this, so I thought I'd ask - what do we think?
>>7876204is this some guro fetish gooner comic?
>>7876146sttop sketching and draw some comics with raw lineart. combine the sketch and the inking phase, this is assuming you're on digital. The style of trying to trace your sketches with inks is optional. You could instead just draw it nice the first time, or have vague sketches to keep you on track and then draw over it.
>>7876355It's not a fetish comic - it's quite violent, but other than that, totally SFW.It's a black comedy about a girl who discovers she's immortal and makes a killing being a snuff film celebrity, meanwhile her legal team tries to fight off the law because the things they're doing aren't technically murder. In the process, she falls in love with her co-star and frequent murderer.
>>7876510Sounds like it could be popular among the right circles. Just remember to make the girl as plain as possible and the guys hot to attract the widest audience.
>>7876510>It's not a fetish comic>snuff film celebrityok dog
>>7876536>That imageDon't you go thinking men and women are so different! They both want to tame or be tamed, that's as simple as it gets! The former is why men are obsessed with breeding and the later is why they're obsessed with dommy mommies, and for women, it's the same way, just with tumblr sexymen both ways. It's all about power and control, like Marina once said.>Just remember to make the main girl as plain as possibleConsidering her mood board, I doubt that'll be possible, and I hate writing plain characters. I know having something to self insert into is important to a lot of people, but it's never been to me!>>7876584Most of it is focused on the behind-the-scenes drama and the inherent absurd comedy of running a snuff ring like a regular business because the lead girl can't actually die. But it might be a turn-off for a lot of people. That's okay.
>>7876510Dark but creative. Is there going to be a rival love interest competing for her heart?
>>7876599but why does it have to be snuff shit specifically? it would be just as absurd if it were like a life insurance fraud ring or maybe identity theft. because right not you cant really separate that from fetish shit. either that or being a little too obvious about "taking the immortal character gimmick to the Nth degree".This kinda works into my idea about too many artists trying to build around some quirky mad-libbed elevator pitches instead of a careful intentionally developed story. with characters that serve to move the plot instead of the other way around
My next pages will take place in space. What should I do about the sound effects then? Space has no sound, so obviously I probably shouldn't even use sound effects. But that just sounds so weird. There will be huge mechanical clamps moving and being released, engines blasting... but none of it will have sound effects? I'm unsure of how to proceed.
>>7876640You could capture the feeling of space being jarringly empty by leaving more empty space on the page. A lot of blackness where sound and SFX should be. If you're trying to accurately capture the feel of action in space, then you should be jarring and strange, since space is jarring and strange. If you're not so committed to realism, just go with usual SFX.
>>7876510If you're trying to make it sfw, you have to be careful with how you present the subject matter as well which is by it's own merit treading into taboo! This could be very tricky.>>7876640In your case rule of cool might just be more important. pew pew pew
>>7876782I think I'd move her nose slightly to the right
>>7876782Where can I actually read your comic, because when you post the pages and partial pages, I really have no idea what is going on. I thought this dude was trying to kill people, but now the girls are hanging out with him?
>>7876782what's a summary of the comic? is the guy an incel?
>>7876895He's deffo the authors self insert
Working on a warp engine concept for my story. I want something mechanical with moving parts instead of the usual magical glowing engine. I'd call it "warp tree" in-universe. This one still looks really lame so I'll try to find some some way to embellish it.
>>7876626It's not that type of story - but the male love interest has a sort-of wife owing to an arranged marriage, and that'll add some drama.>>7876649"SFW" isn't the right term - I was just trying to say that it's not porn. I give no such promise that you can read this with your boss looking over your shoulder!>>7876629>Why does it have to be snuff specifically?A few reasons.>ThematicsI don't want to bore you with the themes of a comic I haven't even drawn yet, but this work deals a lot with psychosexuality and how sex is tied to independence, and something like a life insurance fraud or identity theft plot wouldn't tap into those ideas in the same way. >Status Quo UpkeepThis work is heavily inspired by fly-on-the-wall office dramas, which tend to take place in the same place day after day, and the plot of the week comes in to interrupt things before they go back to normal, with only character relationships shifting permanently. "She's running another scam" doesn't let me do this; how many times can she run a scam before people start catching on? Wouldn't her and the rest of the office have to keep moving locations once the local insurers start catching on? Same idea for other criminal plots. Meanwhile, "she's doing another shoot" doesn't require any explanation.>Sex creates more striking imagery than just violenceIt's true!
