>>

Guys, I discovered that I struggle with something.
I have a lot of fun drawing and painting from life, be it still life work, figure drawing, landscapes. I don't really have to think much besides how I'm going to translate what I see to a flat surface and make it look appealing. It's not easy, but it's not THAT complicated either. Now don't get me wrong I'm not trying to brag her.
The issue is, I'd love to dive a little deeper into story telling, maybe making a comic, I love the idea of combining story telling with more analogue ways of printing.

But I really have no idea how to write a story, or how to even come up with a story, where does a story even begin? Does it just 'come to you'?

needs a more dramatic angle. it feels too static and symmetrical like this at least to me
i would make that pillar thing even bigger, shift it either slightly left or right, tilt the whole composition slightly and maybe get some 2 point perspective going on. also make that platform the guy is standing on more visible because it's too indistinct. i mean i'm beg at environments too but this is just how i envision a ''beter'' version of it in my imagination. watch more movies

Your face proportions are off, you need to bring the face down the skull. The arm is too long the way you're doing it. The elbow crease is too far, its going into where the joint of the elbow would be. That's all I see, IDK really know much about anime faces or even who you're trying to draw.
>>
>>7893136
I thought this was supposed to be a dude until I read your filename. Sorry man, but this face is way too ugly for a loli/teen girl. Generally speaking you'll want to shorten the midface by moving everything down closer to the chin to give her a more youthful look. Look up official art of her and try to capture her likeness better since this is your biggest issue.

Line-art has the magic ability to take the life out of any drawing, if you're not careful. If I were to do it, I'd make three to four sketches beforehand, just to get a feel of what I'm drawing. Line-art is a skill in and of itself, and it's difficult to master.

I'm trying to do evistons course but drawing something from life and making it look correctly 3D is incomprehensible to me.
You're basically supposed to put a cylinder and a ball on a book / tissue box and draw it so it seems 3d, no shading or whatever but I can't even get the box to look correct as a start. I am greatly annoyed by that, thanks for reading my blog.
>>
>>7893290
that is why you should spend some times on copying things you like to train you eye to draw accurately.
>>
>>7893296
I thought that was the point of the course by copying things I see and putting them into a 2D space. Maybe I misunderstood it.

Doesn't help that copying things from life honestly does not interest me at all.
People say it's important but drawing characters doing goofy shit (even practicing while being bad) is alot more fun than getting the perspective of a tissue box right.
>>
>>7893287
Because you have no sense of perspective (which is okay, you are a newcomer)

Next time try using construction lines even though your subject is very simple. It helps have a sense of placing things like the handle in perspective.

What you could be practicing is drawing simple cylenders like that one, but instead of a handle, try placing a sphere in a way that looks natural. Draw a few different shapes at different angles and place spheres or other 3d shapes on top of them until your sense of space comes naturally.

The book Fun With a Pencil is perfect practice for this. Early on it focuses specifically on drawing heads with this exercise, but really those fundamentals apply to pretty much everything.
>>
>>7893263
Huh, I haven't seen such nice freeform edges in a long while, like real snappy feel, actually felt every moment when my eyes passed from line to line.
Real nice brush too, no idea what's it called though, never seen that edge to soft effect.
>>
>>7893298
Thanks for the advice, trying to place different shapes might be a good idea, I'll try
>>
>>7893290
Everything in drawing is incomprehensible until you bash your head against the wall enough times by doing it over and over until it clicks

Why not ease up on the back light hitting the face and just make the the ice crystal she's holding as a secondary light source much stronger with a bigger radius to light up the face and ease the burden of the more rough back lighting for a double light contrast and a more dramatic shot? It would probably fit your theme better too.

>but I had fun
That's the most important part. Having fun is actually one of the best ways to improve, if you're conscious about learning to draw. It's going to do wonders, if you keep up the attitude, anon.
I like the drawing. You might want to keep the perspective more uniform. It's a good idea to study how focal lengths influence the perspective distortion as well. Having a low focal length of 35 mm (which is one of the most common) is more pleasing to the eye, and it will help in combating fish-eye effect. Unless that's what you were going for.
Pic related, not mine. Difference in focal lengths.

she actually IS supposed to be uncomfortably close. as in, standing within centimeters from you and looking directly up at you. Mnnn. The right arm angle might be a bit low, but it's hard to judge because the original pose is more of a leaning/floating gesture. Your redline reads more like she's standing upright, which wasn't the intention.

yah dude and also your lineart is kinda sloppy. which program are you using? maybe do it in a high resolution so your drawing is not that pixelated
>>
>>7893821
What exactly are you struggling with and how are you trying to use it now?
Typically you don't have to since in 95% of drawings every part of the body is roughly the same distance from the vanishing point. The only time it would be useful is dutch angle type scenarios like picrel where one or more parts of the body are significantly further from the vanishing point than the others. Note how in this drawing the sides of the head don't trend towards the vanishing point, thats because the neck is bent so the top of the head is (basically) the same distance from the vp as the bottom of the head.

If you making a drawing like this I would start by placing the vp and then drawing two converging lines to represent the outer legs/torso. These should be contained within those lines. This doesn't mean everything needs to be parallel. You can see in picrel that the hips are cocked, so the inner thighs don't converge towards the vanishing point and the body left side of the legs/torso don't perfectly follow the perspective line. For that you just need to kind of eyeball it a bit.

My problem is more of a "how do you implement it" sorta thing.
Because I cannot grasp how you lay out shapes in perspective, if you gave me a pencil and told me to try it, i'd just draw boxes using the perspective ruler as if i was drawing a machine or a building or a pile of crates floating in space and probably try to jam egg shapes inside those boxes. but when i'd have to bend over limbs or something i'd just wouldn't know what to do.
its a bit hard to explain.

Technically each set of parallel lines has its own vanishing point on the horizon line like the legs in that picture. Drawing a whole new perspective grid is unfeasible, so practicing until you get a feel for it is important. Sorry for my shaky lines btw, I'm phone posting.

I've drawn chainmail a few times. You can simplify them as little C shapes, and you can also use shading to sell the effect. Since you're using a fineliner, an example of how I'd do the shading on the right picture, is to shade underneath with a pencil and erase the graphite in C shapes to reserve the highlights, the lightly hatch with the fineliner under the graphite, and then lightly drawing the links while looking at a reference to get an understanding for how chainmail looks and behaves.

>>7894058
Oh, nevermind. Not only do you already get it but you also mogg me. I'm sold on the effect.

Draw really lightly at first until you have the rough form mostly right, it feels like you drew parts of the body by themselves without considering the whole form.

>>7893993
Mirroring is a good trick but you can also work on being able to see the fucked up proportions without having to mirror.

>>7893512
I think the way you use the circles and straight lines for the underdrawing is keeping you from thinking about the 3D forms as much as you could be. Try to think in rhythms and edges instead of drawing the stick person and then adding the curve later.

Anyone have any tips on not chicken scratching as much? Been doing timed hand studies and I feel like my cowardly lines are limiting the amount of texture I can show.

its still a fucking dick move. its not even a fucking redline what he did, he just redrew the whole thing on a higher technical level (not to say it has more soul, which it definitely doesnt, it looks like the most generic run-off-the-mill commercialised anime, unlike the original). so what exactly is the „point“ of this critique? original poster is not gonna improve from it because its just a whole new drawing, not at all focused on actually helping to fix flaws in OPs art. the entire purpose of this middle finger disguised as a redline was just a near-pro level artist coming in to shit on a beg and harvest attention. i really doubt this was anywhere near well intentioned but just on the off chance that it was, use your brains next time and have the common courtesy to ask „can i do this“ instead of just appropiating other peoples art for some (you) farming

just wondering, i know this site prob doesnt care as much, but i care.
how can i know if what i draw is culturally insensitive?
like im thinking of doing a masai giraffe with traditional kenyan beadwork. but i want to make sure its respectful
>>
>>7894397
yea, i was def going to do more research to make sure i know exactly what im drawing. i just def didnt want to do anything wrong, like if it would even be disrespectful just to try doing it in my style

Professor! Thank you so much for asking! Very kind of you! Don't worry, I'm great, I'm just having a weird falling on the drawing aspect interest. I got bored, I need to do something radically different. Maybe reading, or catching up with other unrelated stuff. I have a lot of energy that just doesn't want to go into the "drawing task" lol. Yeah I can draw whatever, the problem is that the "act" of drawing is not "doing it" for me right now, I don't know, it feels like a chore. I need to "miss it" so the passion for it ignites again.
I saw that many times on artists overwhelmed by commission work, they are stuck so deep into it, that they can't break away from it no matter how much they hate it, and they get suicidal. I can stop drawing whenever I want fortunately, lol.
>>
i did these at the mall so they're rushed and awful but I'm considering today my first day of "trying to draw everyday again" and I'm determined this time
i saw a convo about sobriety between two very good artists but had nothing to post because not been drawing and wanted to say it's really inspiring and brings me a lot of joy to see people talk about sobriety, im almost a month sober from alcohol and hoping to keep it going, it really helped my mood to read, I think lioness oc guy was one. thanks guys

why would you think you'd be able to draw nice stuff fast if you have not practiced it? what makes you think you are already as good as other artists? who are you trying to impress? why can't you accept yourself how you are at this moment? don't you think it is ok if you do some bad drawings? if you get too emotionally attached to every single drawing instead of taking it easy and giggling about your mistakes, you will find yourself in a negative feedback loop where you don't draw, don't improve and start hating drawing, and the more it takes for you to improve the more you will hate it. now go and do some shitty drawings

No prob Deer! Here you have another Scared Egil, the cruels shaved his crotch for some reason, he's not used to feel his skin so unprotected and exposed there, just the air must feel so fresh and menacing, I hope they aren't planning to hurt him or do anything cruel right in that oh so sensitive part of his convulsing scared body. hee-hee.

>>7894540
>Do you use reference or is this all from imagination?
Yeah, 99% of my stuff is from imagination, no ref. That's one of my most problematic "pet peeves" (aside from the "ahem" controversial sexual tone). If I have to get a ref, I just get bummed out of the initial motivation. It has to be something really quick, and that comes with its cons. I know my "no-ref" figures lack a lot in the "realistic anatomy department" lol

>>7894556
If you're acknowledging and facing that "problem", then you're ready to "fail" on purpose, or "with a purpose". Yeah, just have at it, do weird figures, retorted, extreme, break the mold. Some people call that "artistic" or "creative", you just go at it, with a playful mind, no one cares, if you trigger someone, you just laugh, because, it is actually fun and funny to play with something so ethereal that can cause so much emotions in others. It's just water flowing down the river, you can't hold it, just let it flow eternally through your fingers. Your riches are infinite, you can draw it again, and again, and again... Forever.
This is good advice too >>7894563 I tried once doing simple pixel art, wich is the reduction of art to the minimal expression, and it worked.

>>7894560

I don't understand this pose. The outline is already pretty blocky, so should I try to just copy it or turn it into a 3D block? I can't make sense of the head either. Is he looking forward or to his left?

I'm falling for the bait here but just in case there is someone in this thread who thinks hung is only used to describe cocks I'm replying

Hung is the most common between hanged and hung, hanged only applies for hanging people but hung is also applicable. It's like how all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares

Torso is too long, head is too boxy/square (female skulls/jaws are rounder and pointier at the extremes), eyes/nose/face too high for anime style (in my opinion), and the arms seem to be disconnected from the back (the lats insert between the triceps and the biceps, more prominently in men but it should also be visible in women).
The pose is also very straight and stiff. Maybe adding a bit of rotation (like in contrapposto) or hip tilt (lordosis since female) would add more dynamism or give a stronger impression.
Just my personal opinion, though.

How the fuck do you shade with layers? You put a multiply layer, and then the color looks like shit because it's too muddy, then you put over lay on top so they have some fucking saturation. But there are DARKER colors I want to draw, then what? I do the whole process again? Another two layers? And if I want to change a shadow how do I do it without redoing everything again because I can use an eraser in two layers at the same time.
What an absolute load of crap layer blending modes turned out to be

Shift your hues or go with complementary colors. Like shading yellows with a darker violets, reds with dark greens and so on. If you shade with complementaries, don't make the shadows too saturated.

>>

Her ribs to pelvis connection looks a bit strange, too much of a wasp waist. I also think her belt should wrap more around her ass more as it feels more flat.
Lastly her legs to ass connection is wrong, and the lighting makes no sense as there are should be more cast shadows from the arm onto the ribs and more parts of the left edges in shadow if ithe lighting is coming from top right. The design is cute though.

so your main drive is drawing for other people?
It depends, this site is great to pick on amazing stuff like this >>7894661 and then have a great time doing something fun with it, I can't do that anywhere else. I did that Figuary thing on /fig/ and I think that I did "some" pretty beautiful pieces there (I believe), wich I don't care to do usually, and I didn't get any remarkable feedback, maybe that reminded me of how pointless and futile can be to try to be a "real artist" nowadays. No one really cares, now more than ever before. I came to realize that what I draw matters only if it is fun for ME. Otherwise, if you put your heart on the care of an "audience" your "artistic heart" will end up on the trash bin.

You're welcome. I actually like the concept of your drawing, the character is like a god or angel descending upon us.
>I tried to add perspective to the face to make it look like she is looking slightly down at the viewer, if you are thinking this I probably failed at the perspective
Yeah, in that case the top of the head should be less visible, and the underside of both the nose and the chin should be visible, since the head is tilted back to look down. You should probably add some curvature to the face features (I made the same mistake a while ago).
On the other hand, if you want her to look like she's coming down from above (rather than just looking down), you'll have to redraw the perspective of the whole body as well.
>I wanted a full frontal pose, something kind of imposing, maybe it just doesn't match with the theme? idk.
On the contrary, it fits perfectly. You're drawing is reminiscent of Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil.

I don't like planning
What's wrong specifically?

>I don’t like planning

This is going to be a huge problem for you as an artist. Planning is literally the most important part of a drawing, it’s how everything falls into place

As for what’s wrong with it, it’s hard to tell what I’m looking at. I see a robot, but where is he? Is it a city? Is it futuristic? Everything is drawn very ambiguously, almost as if you expect the viewer to understand it because you do. Please consider getting used to planning your drawings, because it’s really going to hurt you as an artist if you don’t.

Do artists who dοn't draw faces well end up just learning one face really well (like all the angles) and just copy that?
And that's how you end up with sameface artists?

First you try to understand where the muscles attach to, then you can more easily remember the direction of the fibers, and then you try to give them volume while following the direction of the muscle fibers, making them more apparent near and towards the insertion points of the muscles. Follow their curvature, because flat lines will flatten their volume, think of it as adding a shape on top of another shape. Also remember that striations are more apparent in flexed muscles rather than relaxed ones, and some muscles like the biceps rarely show proper striations.

If they don't enjoy chasing trends and drawing things to appeal to others instead of themselves, yes that's bad.
>>
>>7896164
Drawing for others is bad, yes. You should only be drawing for yourself.

Here I really exaggerated the striation effect on the triceps, following both the photo and a more anatomical guide for the direction of the muscle fibers. The red drawing was simply getting a feel for the form underneath, and the green one was testing the direction of the fibers.

And another example of how I'd do it with the muscles of the chest. The chest is a good area to train this sort of thing, because it has fibers that attach to the same point towards the biceps, but since it is a large muscle, the fibers separate into distinct groups according to the direction of their contraction.
