Not getting much out of copying hands after the first 50. Just feel like I'm copying lines; at that point, I might as well just do more anime faces.

I'm going to try to draw the bones of the hand instead. Maybe after getting comfortable copying hands, the best thing to do is to draw the actual anatomy underneath to not stagnate. Since the bones don't squash or stretch, learning how to draw them shouldn't be as difficult. Also, there are significantly more landmarks on bones than there are on skin, at least on female skin. This helps to keep the proportions accurate when drawing, which is something I struggle with a lot.

The point of all of that is to be able to draw the whole human body from reference. I'm not entirely interested in drawing completely from imagination. When I try to draw a human body from reference, it's daunting. I don't know where to begin and the whole drawing ends up looking like crap. So my goal is to draw each individual part to get comfortable with the parts. That way, when I tackle the whole, it'll be a lot less intimidating.

I'll be building on top of the previous anatomy. So I won't move from hands to then the arm in isolation without the hand. Everything prior will be included. This means I draw the hand AND the next thing I move up to.

For now though, I'm going to stick to hands for a while, drawing the bones until I feel like I understand it. Maybe get to 100 iterations like I originally planned. Moving forward though, I'll add bones to a structure. So it'll probably look something like:
>25 hands from life
>25 hands from anime
>25 hand bones
>25 hand muscles
That's probably not exactly what I'll use but it's a template for what I'll likely do.

I've also been drawing anime faces recently. It feels a little easier to draw them now for some reason. It's not like I did anything different. I just drew a bunch of hands.

I'm an absolute complete beginner who's never tried to draw anything more complex than a stickman their whole lives. I've always wanted to draw art and now I'm finally venturing out and posting my awful cringe child scrawls on here

This is a drawing Day5 into my journey. I'm trying the method where I just simply redraw images I like, using them as reference.

Are there any tips or exercises I should do to help with head and upper-body anatomy? I will try and tackle hands and fingers at a later date. I don't want to strive to be some complex artist with mastery over the foreshortening perspectives. I simply desire to get to a level where I'd be happy with drawing cute girls I see in media.

Hey, the most important factor here is actually doing what gets you into doing the drawing part itself
If your approach makes you actually draw and draw more then id say go for it, but if after some time you feel like you're not really making progress then try to balance between drawing random things for fun and studying

Thank you!

It was unironically a Reddit post that finally convinced me that drawing is repetition rather than some missing esoteric knowledge.

This SEEMS illogical until one actually "just draws" themselves. You end up realizing that drawing is just a matter of stacking various microskills into your subconscious by drawing a lot. It's like driving a car. At first you have to consciously think about hitting the brake pedal and the accelerator but after a while you don't even think about it. Your brain doesn't even register "brake pedal" or "accelerator" anymore, it just reacts.

Drawing is the same way.

"Just draw" is valid but it doesn't make sense until you actually do it. You can't logically show that it works because it's not logical. It's like trying to explain how to get better at free throws in basketball by explaining the aerodynamics or physics of a basketball.

Which is also how I looked at drawing. I saw each drawing a free throw. Some shots go in. Some miss. But the important part isn't to hyperfocus on a SINGLE free throw. It's just one of a hundred free throws. And just like free throws, you're not going to sit there and try to perfect your form or whatever before throwing the ball (though you also don't just throw the ball haphazardly). You make an attempt, analyze for a few seconds why you missed, then take another shot. Rinse and repeat.

Drawing is the same way.

Final point: the biggest reason why I think I improved (other than drawing consistently) was getting off of /ic/. I don't mean never visiting /ic/ but rather visiting it very infrequently. I didn't see much improvement until I reduced my time on /ic/ from every single day to once or twice a week. Every time I spend more than 5-10 minutes on /ic/, I could literally feel myself losing progress. It's hard to describe. Like some sort of spiritual succubus or whatever but instead of your semen it steals your drawing gains. Sounds crazy but I think it's real. This place is a trap.
