The thing you need to learn is called "edges".
There are, generally, 3 main types of edges.
>Sharp edge
>Soft edge
>Some Shit Between edge

>Sharp edge
Think of the sides of a cube. Each time you change from one face to another, that part is going to be likely "cell shaded". Makes it look pointy, no?
>Soft edge
Think of the surface of a sphere. It's all going to be round in how you shade it, blended basically. Maybe airbrushed.
>Some Shit Between edge
Adjust accordingly. Sometimes you'll have a rounded edge between two flat planes, or someone poking into a breast. Some surfaces have several.

There are also cast shadows. Those are sharper the closer you are to the thing that's blocking the light source.

I am 13% Full of Shit though, so I may not be able to practice what I preach. I could ruin your lineart if you want in an attempt to try and illustrate what I mean? The fastest way to do so is to fill your canvas with the shade color and use the eraser tool to chip away where the light hits your subject.
>>

>put no effort + don't care about result / OP

Just like everything in life, huh?

It's fucking amazing how once you stop caring (especially when you want the opposite result), that's when you get what you were previously vying for.
In fact, it feels like everything in life is attainable by literally killing all desire for what you really want.
Thus, you end up living a life where you are perpetually disappointed about getting exactly what you don't want.

Now I just have to stop caring about women and sex...

Drawing, like any skill, requires dopamine to be released while doing it in order to reliably reach competency. This allows you to enter the flow state far easier and spend hours without realizing it. Hours which are necessary to achieve competency. Rote repetition.
Without this, you will never get good at any skill.
Thus, if someone desires to produce artwork but they do not get dopamine (or enter flow states) while drawing, the only viable solution is to search for avenues in which achieving dopamine release and flow states are possible while progressing with said goal.

If the goal is:
>I want to learn to draw
Then there's nothing you can do.
But if it's something like:
>I want to have artwork for my game
or
>I want concept designs for a cover for a book
This opens you up to other possibilities when drawing isn't viable, as it is not for me (I don't enjoy the act of drawing or mark-making).

Of course, I'm not saying AI is the best route, it's simply ONE route for producing artwork. There's painting, 3D, sculpting, and other artforms that also exist. AI is simply the easiest to produce output--which is also why it's the least valuable. It's also the most technical when you want it to be. You can choose to produce slop or you can choose to learn all the technicals that go into actually producing an output. It's up to the person to decide if they want to produce slop or actually work a single output to perfection.

Like I said before, I probably won't even get into AI art.
It's just one of many routes I can take IF I choose to get back into it.
My point is that the physical act of making marks on the page is simply not for me.
But if I still have a reason to produce something, I'm doing myself a disservice by forcing myself to do a skill in which I hate doing and find no enjoyment in. That's the crux.

And, in fact, that's the advice of /ic/.
>if you don't like drawing, then you shouldn't do it
Why would there be a problem in taking their advice?
>>
>>7942945
YOTSUGI RUN
>>
>>7942954
this is like 50% solid as fuck advice and also 50% total bullshit just because it makes me upset lol
But real talk, I think you can go a long ways if you're doing it purely because
>I want to learn to draw
is such a flexible goal, you are more prone to changing your goal when you get bored. It can backfire though, I'd think, which is how you get really good artists starting to deteriorate after a point, since what appeals to them is changing due to them not having a solid goal. Flexibility is key, but I can only speak from the perspective of a fucking mentally broken NEET who spends 90% of his time drawing and nothing else. (sometimes for pocket change)

Truest to your advice is the last few lines. Being downright addicted to drawing will help drag you through your roughest patches. Because that's all they are; rough patches.

Are goals really necessary when you love the act itself though?
When it came to writing, I never had to force myself to create a goal, I just did it because it was fun, even if I wrote absolutely nothing of meaning. I didn't have use "discipline" or whatever to make myself do it.
I think the goal of anyone who tries to pursue art is to choose the medium in which they find themselves drawn to rather than the "correct" approach. That's why being open to AI art is helpful. It doesn't mean that is what you will do, it simply proves to yourself that you're not forcing a paradigm based off of preconceptions that YOU didn't even come up with yourself.
For all I know, I might become a fucking trad sculptor, I don't know. Maybe I find that the act of doing so actually releases dopamine and gives me satisfaction compared to putting lines on a page. But restricting myself to JUST drawing was likely the reason I never made much progress considering the other forms of art that exist.
>>7942965
>>7942969
This works if you actually enjoy the physical act of drawing, just like "just write" actually works if you enjoy writing.
When you don't, no amount of forcing yourself will get you to produce good artwork.
Good artwork is never produced by people forcing themselves to draw when they hate doing it.
Plus talent does exist but I wouldn't say this is a massive advantage. Just makes things easier in the beginning.

Instead of drawing the hair as individual brush strands, first sketch the general shape as a block and then use a semi transparent chalk-like brush going light (in the middle) to dark (closer to the ends) to render the hair.
Rendering the blonde hair may be easier if you make a large blob in a midtone, then lights, then add darks, only after the end adding individual strands. Add the darkest unbleached roots last.

>colors are way too off

Genuinely, because you are learning you should just use the eyedropper tool to compare the colors in the image to the ones you are picking. You are choosing tones that are way too bright and saturated compared to your reference, and not taking the light of the reference into account either.

Why are you using a white background when the background of the original reference is a warm toned grey? Using the eyedropper on the ref will show you that the original color of the white eyes and teeth are not an exact #ffffff white, they are closer to the warm grey of the background. You are taking the colors out of their context. Train your color picking by literally color picking and it will become a lot easier.

The yellow blonde of your artwork has a green undertone while your reference is a warm honey-blonde which would have more of a soft brown undertone. You recognize the warm undertone when you tried to depict the roots and the bangs, but you went to an entirely different part of the colorwheel for the strands.

Try drawing and rendering entirely in greyscale to understand the values before going in with color. You use mostly flat colors and have little to no value in your artwork, while the value is easily the most striking part of your reference photo. After rendering in greyscale, apply color with a clipping layer. Stick to a very limited desaturated palette picked directly from your reference.

Start from base 1. Line weight, forms, construction and perspective need to be your primary focus as of now. This is a very flat drawing, it’s quite unclear, and it just looks sloppy. I advise that you warm up with line weight exercises and Practice drawing from the shoulder annd not the wrist, which you are clearly doing here. Additionally study artists whose work and style that you enjoy and go from. Keep posting and good luck

Women follow the path of least resistance just like everyone else.
If staying a healthy weight is easier, they'll do that.
If becoming obese is easier, they'll do that.
That's why some women immediately bloatmax once they get married, it's simply the easiest route.

All artists are exactly the same.
If drawing was genuinely hard and took discipline, they would never achieve competency.
They continue to draw only because it is the path of least resistance.
This can no longer be disproven because anons here literally prove me right by saying to give up if you don't enjoy drawing << proving my point exactly
>>7942996
Before?
To learn how to draw.
Now that I've accumulated over a decade worth of skill building knowledge and 7 years of drawing on and off?
Mostly to bait.
But always with sprinkles of truth.
I could've just said:
>i'll try to learn sculpting
or
>i'll try to learn painting
instead of mentioning AI, but that's hardly ever interesting.
Always gotta mix in some truth with the bait, otherwise no one will take it.

Though the whole AI debate is interesting anyway because it reduces the need for artwork without purpose. Artwork to display skill rather than to tell a story or get an emotion across, both of which AI don't do--not because of AI itself but of the people mass producing the slop. All of the people who see drawing as JUST a skill rather than a medium in which convey something have all become obsolete. What I find interesting is that instead of evolving with the change, artists on here double down on their pompousness, calling people who spend hundreds of hours drawing "lazy" just because they lack talent. It's truly interesting to see the downfall of the mark-maker. Can't say they didn't bring it upon themselves.

Years of experience tends to do that.
Most people here have never done any other skill than drawing which limits their understanding.
That's why it eludes them that people can't good at drawing after years and need to rush towards simplistic conclusions.
The average artist is a simplistic creature, not an educated one.
This is proven by the fact that drawing itself is rote repetition as opposed to amassing a large amount of knowledge.
Just look at the person I replied to below. That's the average intelligence of the typical artist on /ic/. Nuance is a foreign language to the average artist on /ic/.
>>7943225
Nope. Nice try though.
I'm certainly far more hard working than you.
You can prove the above wrong by pointing out a single flaw in my argument.
(I recommend you don't bother trying, you wouldn't want to embarrass yourself.)
>>7943231
Studied Vilppu, Hampton, Eaton, Bridgman, etc.
My knowledge about drawing and art is about a 9/10.
Drawing requires rote repetition however, like factory labor. That knowledge is useless for drawing itself but I can see it being quite useful directing AI art-agents.
Essentially, I become an Art Director rather than sticking to the lower rungs of mark-making. I can see this as being feasible.
>>7943262
Another failure in reading comprehension.
>difficulty =/= forcing yourself
Competitive video games are "difficult." Good luck achieving any kind of success with just a few hundred hours when people play those for 6-12 hours a day.
Just because something is difficult, doesn't automatically mean the person put in effort in order to improve at that skill. No one would ever consider playing a video game for hours a day as being "disciplined."

The same applies to drawing.
Artists are generally not disciplined.
They got good at drawing by accident.
It often came easily to them.
This is precisely why people on here call others "lazy" or "retarded."
If drawing was actually difficult, those responses would have no logical weight.
>>
Regarding the last portion, if drawing was genuinely difficult, it would logically not follow that anyone who cannot achieve success is mentally incapacitated. That would make no sense. To say that would imply that drawing IS easy and IS simple to learn that doesn't require much effort. Thus, you imply:
>drawing is SO easy that you have to literally be stupid/retarded/etc. to not improve
But you then contradict yourselves by implying the exact opposite.

So is drawing difficult or is it not difficult?

By your responses, you admit that drawing came so easily to you that anyone who couldn't improve simply had to be mentally ill or incapable of learning.

Thus, drawing was easy for all of you, is your admission.

>HL Note: Logical Trap has been laid; users will be unable to argue against this point without conceding to one of the proposed arguments.
>>
>>7943341

Why are you even drawing a comic when you're gonna have this attitude, just schizo-ramble your whole story into a .txt file, since you're so confident you don't even have to make it appealing to read.

make drawing the first thing you do each day if possible, don't play vidya before it
draw long enough each day and then you can reward yourself with some vidya after.
ultimately, all of those great designs you see in video games that you love? those designers are drawing much, much more than they are playing, if at all really

For rendering, starting from shadow mapping or shadow and light shapes will be the first obstacle for you. Although outside of rendering, your drawing has a lot of confusion going on around the hips. Make sure to draw your shapes through others to see how they can connect. It's not very clear what the other leg is doing or how it connects to her hip.

Anyway, after you've established the main shadow and light shapes, you need to add a middle tone to round the form. Notice how there's some parts of the shadow shapes where I don't add midtone? That's mostly because it's a cast shadow rather than a form shadow. We can go into things like the penumbra of a cast shadow, but your better off giving form shadows the midtone and cast shadows kept as they are. Then you need to make the gradient where the midtone meets the terminator. That's edge control mostly. You can then keep adding on modelling factors 1 by 1. I finished off by adding some ambient occlusion. Defining areas in the shadow. With how light the value of her skin is, it's difficult to add highlights or do subtler modeling because the value range is so narrow. For now I'd stick to just getting the light and shadow shapes in place. Blending or adding more modeling factors won't help you much right now. I'd recommend a basics drawing course with a good focus on observation followed up by a course featuring things you'd like to draw (i.e. anime girls). Hope this helps.
