These arent bad, next time try and get some more confidence with your lines. For the dark shadows keeping the direction of your lines the same will look better. I'd also recommend you look at some hatching examples
>>
>>7980556
I am already trying to gain line confidence. I do it by consistently doing those drawabox and peter han line exercises as part of my warm ups as well as doing some few elipses, basic 2d shapes and boxes, before I start drawing. I am also looking forward to improve my values by rewatching some proko vids and taking notes. Then making my lines more diverse by reading pen & ink drawing workbook. Thanks for the advice though.

>>
>>7980558
Those exercises are useful although for me I found that they didnt help me as much as just doodling in my free time, the kind of doodles people do while on the phone. I like to fill a small digital canvas with lines but in a free form abstract way (I can give an example if you'd like). In your sketch from imagination the lines are better so you can do it, the main issue in that drawing is the little 'swirls' you have, the line exercise will help you use more of your wrist and arm to draw which should help with continuous line making.
>>
>>7980566
Could you point out those swirls?

Focusing on local value is a bad choice. Smile lines don't reinforce the emotion, they even appear in expressions like disgust, so they don't add anything. Instead, they make the image busier and introduce values that compete with the eyes and eyebrows.

I wish I didn’t hate doing line art as much as I do, I feel like when I put in the time for it I can achieve some really good results but otherwise it’s just a stiff mess, at least this is starting to look good to me rather than ugly. One of these days I’ll just start pumping out sketches of my oc and finally become a true /ic/ schizo but I fear I’d feel to embarrassed to do that.

your main tools will be a hard edge brush, a soft brush (like an airbrush) and the lasso tool (which you can combine with the airbrush to create shapes with both hard and soft edges)
a pencil brush is nice for sketching, and texture brushes are useful for finishing touches and to add variation
>>
>>7980668
depends on the type of mark you want to make. this video is a good overview of the basic ones. ctrl-paint's videos on brushes are good if you need more.

What makes you think you cant? Just because it looks horrible? Y'know. You don't have to be so perfectionistic. Besides a bad drawing is still a drawing at the end of the day. Sometimes, you have to make shitty drawings then analyze and reflect on them. Know where your flaws are and then study how it can be cured.

i use this tyoew of opainting when i try to convey tons of strans
using a base color or just a round brush with opacity then erasing as a hightligh and using a darker tone with the same brush to convey shadows, the trick is being able to convey the forms

BONUS CRABBING
i recomend using the blur tool for soft areas like the belly, tits legs instead the hard round brush because it leaves some fugly ass waves of different shados when dont incorrectly, its not bad but you need to know how to do them.
also work on your forms those tits lack some fucking forms.

the face could be rounder...also shouldnt her belly be in the shadows the lighting makes it look as if her upper torso and her belly are in different planes kek

I would recommend doing the first lessons of Draw-a-Box, using vanishing points.
This way, you'll be used to drawing boxes in perspective, and then eye balling boxes the best way you can since using vanishing points every time you want to draw a figure becomes impractical.

This might sound like a weird take at first, but I think going through a lot of guides and tutorials before actually doing something is strictly detrimental. It introduces analysis paralysis and raises your standards for what you are "supposed" to be doing. Use me as a cautionary tale and just draw instead.

There is something wrong with the anatomy here I know it, but what?
This sort of leaning-forward pose was definitely overambitious to do without any specific reference. Actually, does it look like she's actually leaning forward?

it's kinda hard to tell the pose so just to keep it simple you need to convey the deep of the forseshoretening with lines or with the painting afterwards. ie the drappery in the right sleeve is in perspective same with the botton of her shirt going around her torso instead of that flat line in your pic that doesnt sell the perspective well, same with the neck~shoulder area.

Extra crabbing
Eyes don't close in a flat horinzontal line at the middle point lol. depending on the expression they could be higher, lower or angled. learn some expressions.
the face is too boxy even for western styles but maybe it's just muh style of drawing narrow faces but i would make it more like this.

I like it. Normally, I wouldn't pay much attention to the objects, but since they are in the foreground and at the same level as the boobs, I think they deserve a little more attention. They feel a bit too cramped together, which flattens the other elements.
I also think making the angry expression a bit cuter would improve the piece. As for the clothing, adding a some value pockets could help reduce the flatness of the frills. For the illustration itself, it might be nice to give her a more believable reason to look annoyed, like spilling beer on her shirt.
Overall, I really like your work. Keep it up, anon!

Just neets, autists and people that geniuly like to draw as a hobby.
Then i realize that it wouldn't work, Discord and left brained fags just outnumber the others by way too much, drawing is no longer a right brained hobby in the western hemisphere and it takes a very long time to draw with the right side of the brain. The ego is too small, the hair color too bright. The site is just dying out, maybe MAYBE the alphas will eventually turn the site into something good again but for now it's beyond useless.

When you start the book, there is a section dedicated to practicing drawing straight lines to train yourself to control it. I already kinda have a good grasp on that when drawing on paper or a screenless tablet, but I'm going to be practicing it for quite a while on this screenless tablet because it's so alien to me.

As for perspective, I learned one-point perspective a couple times by following a tutorial when I needed it, but I already forget how to do it. I guess I'm not even consciously trying to get it correct since I'm being distracted by the inability to draw lines lol. Please ignore my ignorance. It's not intentional.

as someone that did the whole robertson autism with screenless a couple of years back, I can only advise to either do it trad or do it with a screen tablet
skill issue ofc, but it's simply easier to place things like ellipses in perspective when drawing with pencil or pen and paper, and there's a limit to how much erasing you can do before it forces you to move on
>>
>>7981321
I would normally agree with you, but it's been a goal of mine for a long time to get used to a screenless tablet so I can take advantage of my nice big monitor and also have better posture. I'm finally doing it now, and Robertson's book provides a unique opportunity for me to not only learn perspective, which I foolishly skipped, but also to get used to the tablet.

Although you may simply be correct and it may always feel awkward to me if I don't use pen/paper or a screen tablet. I have heard of other people who said they used a screenless tablet for years and it still feels awkward to them for certain things.

I have a regular 24 inch one that I use with a medium tablet (CTL-672) and what annoyed me the most was that a small pencil stroke was magnified due to size difference between tab and monitor. Sure, by sheer luck. Doesn't happen all that often, the ints and pros beat them out. Well, I can't really tell the difference when the so-called int stuff here looks so good it could be on a Square Enix box art. Perhaps to my untrained eye, but also perhaps the hiring managers at those companies also have untrained eyes and the only ones who can see the difference are technical drawing nerds competing with each other.

This piece is mediocre, try hard mediocrity.
Even if you only compare the pure linework the Eo58 piece mogs it to hell

I have a theory as to why this happens, people like uglybastard and what not just give up at some point and they end up spamming the same generic garbage, it's like the western mind is not able to understand appeal so it ends up breaking their EGO and they start tilting to the other side. Western Cartoons with big features are easy to draw, don't believe me? try it. Everyone can draw a batman, a joker perchance? can't do it? use a tutorial.

Feels like drawing generic/ugly is a requirement to become a int westerner artist.

Do you guys ever felt like your art has improved even though you haven't drawn anything in months?
I passively try to understand how things around me are actually structured and it kinda seem to help me get better a bit.
I know that I would just get waaaay better if I did my art daily, but I kinda gave up getting gud.
So I only draw once or twice when inspirations hit and it really seem like I am improving even though I didn't actively tried to. Well at least relatively to the level I was on before

Cute. With some work (face expression), it could easily be part of a coming of age book. Composition wise, going for a squarer aspect ratio would bring more closeness and intimacy to the scene.

>>7981157
the values are really good!, good work

>>7981400
Same as >>7981016: if you're going to have objects in the foreground at the focal point, spend more time on them. For me, this is incredibly hard to read. There's too much local value, especially in the fur, which creates unnecessary blank spaces within the object and ends up making those areas the focus of the image (contrast).

Study the masters, especially their horses and Hercules paintings.

About the feet that >>7981410 mentioned, I disagree. When you ride something in a horseback stance, your feet naturally point outward in a V shape, which you captured. If anything, the soles would be slightly visible, but that's such a minor detail that it wouldn't add anything to the piece. Honestly, it's a waste of time to worry about. Yours is fine, focus on the composition.

Art is as much about drawing as math is about numbers or dancing is about shoes. We use drawing as a means of expression and a manifestation of art, but art is really about relationships, abstraction, and storytelling. So yes, you can improve without drawing for months simply by observing the world and being mindful of it. Read the art spirit one of the greatest books about this, aesthetics is a good subject too.

not trying to discourage you from learning but this is a really misleading picture.
There's value in copying either the left or the right figure but there's a problem with the middle one. It makes you think that it's the middle step in a process. (It isn't.)

No artist draws the skeleton, then the OUTLINE of the finished figure over it.
Instead, you draw the skeleton, then add rough SHAPES onto it until you got the basic form down.
Maybe you knew this already but I think it's important to mention.

I'm assuming you mean how much the hips block the torso in a low angle perspective? Tell me if I'm understanding your question correctly or not.

In the case of those poses it's a matter of interpreting the reference. Look at it and try to see if the hips intersect the ribcage, then try to determine how much of their bottoms you can see. I think a lot of this ability to perceive body parts as simple shapes comes from practice though, so just be sure to do it somewhat frequently and it should become easier to do over time.

I'm starting to see a pattern in these talented rats though.. they have some autistic drive that makes them draw and draw every day non-stop no matter what. They don't care if it is low effort slop or uninspired shit, they just can't stop. Maybe that autistic need to draw is the secret behind the "talent", they just draw till it becomes second nature to them like breathing, eating or shitting.

nigga going ham on the saturation
on a serious note, the color of skin varies a lot, but averages around the low staturation orange
in a common light setup, moving towards blue will leave this desaturated orange in the desaturated reds
but with saturation in the transition from light to dark due to subsurface scattering
a common simplification in cell shading is to use a saturated warm color for the shadow

where did this even come from.

Your hatred for Westerners is unfounded. The old Masters were all white and the new ones are white, too. The comic industry in Asia might be high status and loved - but in the West comics are just a product. There's no love in this. It's a political vehicle for some writers. Don't look at the Western comic industry and extrapolate the Western mind from that, We are on the cusp of a civil war, so give us a break.

I tried, yours is definitely better. Some things I noticed:

You have very neat layers, but your resolution is small, I'd double your canvas then scale the drawing down when needed, I work on 3,000 by 6,000 pixels or 6x3 depending if I'm doing standing portraits or landscapes.

Your brush and linework have no pen pressure or anti aliasing, it's a nice style but your linework suffers because it can't show any thickness or thinness. You also use the same brush size for the face, which in my opinion is the BIGGEST thing holding you back. Your face is way too simple, if you lowered the brush size and zoom in when drawing the face you'll have more room to add detail to the features.
Again, if that's the style you're going for then ignore me, it still looks good and there's plenty of other great artists who draw without any line weight.

Your colors are very saturated, the girl in the image is more muted brown as her base color, I can kinda see why you drew her red but she looks sunburned.

Your proportions and anatomy are far better than mine so I can't give any critique on that. I also tried not to draw or render exactly the same as the image and stuck with what I know, I think sometimes converting parts to things you're more familiar with is more helpful than being completely accurate

I'll post my notes I made on rendering, hopefully you'll find that useful.

>>7982118
Like the other anon said, it depends on your preference, if you can make it look better with her hip placed upper, then go for it. Just do a test of it and take a decision based on how it looks. That's how "appeal" works. If everyone goes 100% "by the book" all the time, then style variety and originality would not exist and everything would be boring.

I have this WIP and wanted opinions on the face. Let me explain what I was going for.
So a longass time ago on ic, someone made what was most likely a bait thread saying that westerners who draw anime are betraying their European ancestors, and are ultimately wasting their time as they can never truly master a style they have no cultural roots to.
Truth or bullshit, I have no clue - but it stayed in my head ever since, and made me ask questions about why I draw anime. And over time, I have felt my artstyle becoming "less anime," for whatever reason, especially as I appreciate a wider variety of art styles, as well as experimenting with my own style in the process.
---
ANYWAY, with this recent drawing I tried pushing the face in an extreme direction. What I was going for was a woman who does not look beautiful in a conventional sense but has strong unique features that make her striking regardless. (The lore is she's the priestess in an ascetic cult where removing all body hair is the norm blablabla whatever).
But I know me and I know I tend to get tunnelvisioned, which is why I ask for an outside perspective to set me straight.
So I ask you: if you were standing across from her and looked her in the eyes, would you think "Wow, there's this inhuman and unconventionally beautiful quality in her that makes me feel oddly attracted to her." or would you think "Dayum this bitch ugly, bitch you bald as fuuuuck"?
Be as honest as you want, I'm on the fence myself so you don't have to worry about hurting my feelings. Even if I did successfully fap to completion to the drawing as a test, I want to hear outside opinions.
(Although, perhaps alarmingly, I did realize later when I tried sketching some eyebrows and bobcut on her that she looks vaguely like my mother. But if I keep her hairless, not so much... I think.)
>>
>>7982292
her teeth looks strange, they are too big and her top lip is too thin.

>>7982296
no eyebrows will always look creepy. her face looks uncanny, like a doll or bad plastic surgery. chill with the cheekbones unless you want her to look like Bogdanoff.

>what's people problem with high contrast
nta. Your original image isn't high contrast, it's fairly low. It has high color saturation/chroma. The reason why you'd want more contrast between the shadow and lights is to make room for reflected light and halftones. The reflected light you have in the shadows is as bright as the average light side, which is a no-no. Everything that's in the shadow (including reflected light) is darker than anything on the light side. Your lightest shadow is still darker than anything in the light side.

pic related, having your values close together isn't bad per se, but attempting to include light effects beyond the terminator is going to make it difficult to manage. It becomes very easy to muddy the rendering and will confuse yourself if you're not careful.

>what does anime celshading style have that my drawing here doesn't
Mostly your shorthand and drawing skills are lacking. The rendering in an anime isn't going to be very sophisticated. Here in this shot with Deedlit, aside from the terminator separating the light and shadow, there's really only highlights in the eyes and some occlusion in the ear and neck. While the line art gives some charm with varying line width, you could replace it with a consistent with and be largely left with a similar outcome.

>why does marc brunet say shat for shadows you pick a warmer hue, I read somewhere else that shadows and supposed to be cold
This is completely contextual. Shadows are just dark versions of an objects inherent colour. Shadow colors change as a result of reflected light. A shadow is cool or warm based on the colour and strength of the light source hitting the object. A blue light source will pull a red coloured object towards blue, but that direct light doesn't hit the shadows. Shadows are excluded from that shift. Therefore the shadow is warm. Sometimes the strength of the light source is so strong it affects the surroundings to the point a room becomes almost monochrome.

>low-beg in terms of anatomy/shapes but has passable rendering
rendering and anatomy are different skills and require different logic. Anatomy is very often times concerned with line drawing rather than mass drawing. Rendering has more concern with the flat.

I think you can push her proportions more for sure. Right now she kind of just a bald lady with wide and high cheek bones. Uncommon? Sure. Alien? Nah. I suggest looking for funny faces on pinterest. Raising the eyes or changing them beyond what is comfortable helps with this. Right now, her eyes are very generic sexy lady eyes. So long as you keep the face symmetrical, there's a lot you can get a with. Basically, I feel neither oddly attracted or this bitch ugly. Instead it's, "She'd be a baddie if she had hair." Which if you're going for alien beauty, hair should not be the deciding factor. Look at the ginger in pic related, she'd look worse without hair, but the hair doesn't save her. Ya feel me? I think you've got a good foundation to get freaky with it.

>>7982637
The line work adds a lot to the feeling of softness in Deedlit, but is not the cornerstone or foundation of the drawing or the rendering. The line thickness adds information and feeling on top of the already solid work. You can tell where her face starts to transition from fleshy into bone along her cheek for instance. It's the icing on the cake. Your line art is very thick, using a smaller mark might help circumvent some issues you're having. What would you have in mind as an example of rendering you'd like to achieve or find good?

Yes, actually.
The main reason you're having problems "rendering" or painting is that I think you've never done actual realistic painting or rendering before, so when you look at real life you're unintentionally making choices that don't capture the essence of the model in a way that makes sense or is appealing.
I highlighted a few things I mentioned here to tell you what I mean in this word salad:

The head being slightly more tilted
Her neck being more curved
The watch looking flat in your version
A small triangular negative space being present in between the jacket and the sleeve
Her ass and hip shaped differently,
The hands and pockets at more of a diagonal tilt
I'd say the main problem isn't your approach but your overall observation skills when it comes to saturation, value control and drawing.
Just like how we can tell if something subtly wrong when it comes to a drawing even if we can't see the original reference, we can observe the same slight discomfort for things with lighting and color.
If you're satisfied with your current level then you can ignore my critiques. However, since you seem to want to go farther, you have to change your approach and thinking

I'm being told that constantly. the problem is, I've been drawing that way for so long, it's pretty much impossible for me to relearn how to draw lineart any other way. it'd be ideal if I could find a coloring style that would fit my thick lines

I've done this several times before and it's always embarrassing, but here's a set of some insagram artists I find appealing. didn't pick black-and-white/sketch-centric artists and nsfw ones. those that I think I wouldn't be able to replicate in my lifetime I marked with a cross

why the immediate hostility? I wasn't even trying to be particularly mean this time. are you even the same guy. I'll assume you are. look, I don't disagree with you about the tilts and such, they're not as they are on the ref. I was more focused on coloring it, I was looking for feedback on that
on the other note, here's some studies an artist I like did from refs. do you think his drawings copy all the angles and proportions exactly? and if not, does that make his drawings bad, or discomforting?
I'm not trying to defend my own drawing though, it's bad sure, just saying that there can be more to a good drawing than replicating the tilts, gesture can be exaggerated and warped, the silhouette might change

>I've been drawing that way for so long, it's pretty much impossible for me to relearn how to draw lineart any other way
Do you want to change you're line art? Or do you mostly want to find a way to render that appeals to you? Both require, as my fellow kendoka would tell me as I listen frustratingly, trying something different.

Joey doesn't really even render. They're mostly flats, if he goes that far. In fact a good portion of these examples, even ones that are crossed off, are flats with some additional local colour changes or gradients for variety.

I do recommend that you try and identify light effects (modeling factors) both in reference and in the art you've posted. It makes it easier to analyze what's going on when you want to replicate it. If you pick one of those examples that you'd like replicate, I can break it down for you and if you feel like it try to apply it to some line art that you have laying around.

>those that I think I wouldn't be able to replicate in my lifetime
You're underestimating how much a lifetime of persistence can do.

He might have meant something more like this. Take a figure drawing course or get some reference if you don't have any. How small is this drawing? I can see the texture of the paper. Are you doing this on watercolour paper? Draw bigger if you're drawing small, it'll help to get your whole arm when making a stroke.
>>
>>7982704
I am not that other anon your replied to you. I actually quite enjoy your work, which is why I'm even bothering to give you my time.
>just trace over the reference to be good.

I think you missed my point.
Tracing over the reference simply helps you focus on one thing at instead of being overwhelmed with the extra information of the lighting and extract just the basic shapes and forms as well as tilts forms.
The key take away is accuracy is still to try honestly try to replicate those shapes and only stylize slightly if you feel like it aligns with your tastes/goals and training your observational skills to an even higher degree that can allow you to deconstruct and reconstruct references in any manner you wish. Again, the problem I notice is your observational skills, which doesn't have to be 100 percent 1:1 for you to gain something. I'd say 90-95 percent proportional accuracy in width height and shape is enough for doing photo studies like this, even for your style.
For example, also notice you tend to make your ribcages too wide. In the red jacket picture ,her far shoulder is tilting away and foreshortening in terms of width compared to your drawing. You appeared to have drawn it at more of a frontal angle making it shoulders look too wide for the pose. Even if you changed the shape design or proportions, this would be something that would carry over into your other work as a mistake.
As for your selected art direction, I'd like to highlight that all of them utilize more detail in tones, gradients and almost unanimously use thinner line art and higher amounts of detail than you in the cloth and hair. Perhaps try setting your brush size to 1 or 2 pixels smaller or copy their settings and canvas size and see how you like it.

Good enough is fine when good prevents you from doing anything else.
Take some courses. Plenty on proko and in the course general. The Russian Academic drawing course with Iliya mirochnik is good but a bit daunting if you want to go the more trad route. Steven Zapata has a course on form and shadow. Dorian Iten has a course on drawing if you'd like that too. He has a shading course and ones he calls guides. The guides are where you'd start.

yeah i think that's fair. so you need to put in more effort in the specific study not your overall output. every study doesn't have to be a 9 or a 10. aim for at least a 7. the time investment necessary to push further is not worth it

>Do you want to change you're line art? Or do you mostly want to find a way to render that appeals to you?
beggars can't be choosers man, either would be great lol. though changing my lineart I think would be way harder
>In fact a good portion of these examples, even ones that are crossed off, are flats with some additional local colour changes or gradients for variety
I think that's because I gravitate more towards shape design when it comes to art I find appealing. I like expressive stuff
tangentially, something else I wanna share. I've noticed that a lot of artists I like are not bound to a particular brushset or style of rendering. some normally do cartoony cel shaded stuff, but occasionally flex with realistic painted portraits, or do a one-off with some weird brush. they'd make a good drawing on a piece of paper if they wanted to. that makes me feel kinda pathetic that I'm out here looking for the 'right' brushes, or that one style that would fit my linework. seems like there are more universal techniques and workflows that these people know
>If you pick one of those examples that you'd like replicate, I can break it down for you
I'm anxious since you've given me plenty of your time already. say, second row, third picture from the left. I'm looking at it now, and I can't seem to figure out where the light source is supposed to be. it's like the artist is being selective with the shadows he decides to paint
>>7982730
I see I see. the takeaway is that I should draw better. I will try. thinner brush size is debatable, any thinner and I won't be able to control my strokes at all. and it wouldn't change the amount of detail I draw. thanks for liking my art enough to bother giving me your time

>some normally do cartoony cel shaded stuff, but occasionally flex with realistic painted portraits, or do a one-off with some weird brush. they'd make a good drawing on a piece of paper if they wanted to
This comes from academic styled training and just drawing. Chinese artist especially have a really good handle on fundamentals. Learning how to draw and refine a drawing to a high degree gives you options to do whatever you want. Copying the process in Bargue plates is some good training for your eye.

For rendering there are conceptual layers to understand that make learning it easier. Base/Local colour, shadow, reflected light, occlusion, halftones, specular highlights. This occurs at the macro and micro scale. Texture would be an example of a micro scale where form principles occur, where as on the macro would be geometric forms receiving light.

>second row, third picture
Best fit that I can give for a light source is to the left, and almost above her. The shapes that don't match that, I would consider artistic liberty and adding interest. It looks arbitrary, especially on the skirt. More the most part, the rendering is a multiply layer and then some paint over the bikini.

Pic related would be an example of going in the direction of the target painting. It's the closest I'm getting in a single attempt. I think I could have gone with a thinner line. If you're worried about layer management, don't. The only thing that matters is that your line art stays on top except for when you want a specific thing above it that would get blocked by the line art. Anyway, the way to improve is to analyze how someone else does something, copy it and try to make sense of their process through reverse engineering, and then attempting to replicate it on a different reference or combination of references. Ask for feedback on what's missing to attain the specific result you're looking for.

Layers for this. I don't normally use multiply, don't like how it feels. I just use normal layers and paint everything directly. Sometimes I do all the lighting effect on 1 layer underneath the lines or just paint over top my sketch if I'm not doing line work.

I think the orientation is ok, maybe it just needs to be placed slightly lower to allow for a small gap between ribcage and pelvis
here's what I was thinking in terms of structure
it also depends on how you want to use the boxes later, either manipulating their forms or just using them as rough perspective guides to guide the sketch

No, and I also think you're going to have a hard time grasping the pelvis through a box. I think it's much simpler and more convenient to begin by seeing the whole body as a two-plane system. Take advantage of the fact that this reference is lit with mostly a single light source, so it's really easy to see that the body is much more cuboid than most people think.

Jack Hamm and Bridgman have more examples of this approach.

>>7982900
Good job, but there's too much stuff in the illustration. The theme is clear, rape and pillage, but what's the focus? I think you can change it to a kind of medium long shot and focus on the characters. For storytelling, you can leave the ship on the right. You can still show the size difference while also showing the closeness better. The lighting is good enough, I don't think your target audience will be super anal about that.

I've seen several people say that 'simplified forms' are a good basis for construction regardless of style. besides, I have a problem with picking stuff up and dropping it immediately, so it's a challenge for myself to go through the whole book

I can't say studying morpho didn't teach me anything, I skimmed through it before, and it helped me understand male obliques a little better. the drawings are ugly though not gonna lie haha, and I feel like I'm shooting myself in the foot trying to copy trad sketches in digital

I'm glad you asked. In the ref, there's multiple light sources, so the shadows get harder to identify. I'll explain as much as I can in https://files.catbox.moe/ebo5uh.png as I don't have the space here.

>what logic do you go by when you...
Most of the time it's literal. Although, In the bottom right of the jacket, that's definitely in light and halftone, but I made it part of my shadow shapes by thinking about which side of that plane is turning a way from the light. It's taking what's there already and manipulating further or closer to what it already is. Zooming out and squinting helps a lot with this merging or simplification.

>like, looking at the ref, her cheekbone...
Some of those decisions is because of the style from the target drawing. Some of them are for interest, if everything in the drawing has the same type of edge, it gets a little boring, the knee and hair gradient being good examples. Reason I didn't include the cheek is because I felt it made the face too complicated. The cheek is not in shadow, that's definitely halftone. The style doesn't really have any halftones, so I excluded them. similarly, for the highlights felt that it would be too much. Reason I added them to the chest is because there's only so much going on there. They make up practically half it, so leaving them out would make it look empty. For the leg, while I can say there's halftones on the side of it, they look dark. Making the whole leg shadow cuts work down and makes for a more interesting decision that fits the style. Anytime you can make a simple but cool decision, you should probably take it.

let me know if this helped or if there's anything you're confused about. Especially in the catbox file. It only covers so much.

>c-can you share the psd though, please...
I literally got rid of it after I was done. I'm sorry. I don't tend to keep psd's. Next time, I'll drop one.

Face is cute and the pose is nice. The body seems too thin and the hips don't seem to be connected properly to the body.
I dunno if I'd go for such an extreme Dutch angle like that for a pose where the character is passive and smiling gently at the camera. Usually extreme Dutch angles are used to build a feeling of unease or tension and they're also used to make low and high angles look cooler or more intimidating. A more subtle angle would probably be better, although it's hard to say since you don't know what you're really going for either.

Halfway through this one I realized it was the worst work I've produced so far and got super frustrated with it. I'm glad I sat through it to the end at least. Thank you to the kind anon who helped with the anatomy, I think I was able to make a few improvements to it (although the way the rendering in shadow failed is one of my biggest frustrations here).
There aren't any characters I want to draw birthday art of for a few months so I can finally do some proper studies. (Or maybe I want to retry this one...)
