New study identified six genetic clusters of Russians by studying Russians in historically highly mixed areas such as Samara, Orenburg and Saint Petersburg. Among them 83% of self identified Russians living in these regions were found to be purely European + with some Finnish admixture, however 17 to 11 percent of ethnic Russians had significant (>5 and >15%) non-European and non-Finnish admixture, 3% of whom were racially ambiguous (non European admixture >40%). In the study, Orenburg Russians was found to be most genetically mixed, according to a 2021 census, self-identified Russians comprised 74% of Orenburg’s population. The biggest limitation of the study was that non-historically mixed metropolitan areas weren’t looked at, so we can’t really say by what percentage the population of ethnic Russians should be reduced. Furthermore, the genetically pure clusters of Russians with little Finnish admixture (2-3) were highly homogenous while the rest were significantly more heterogenous and unstable especially towards their end, suggesting that some clusters could be broken up into smaller ones.https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-50304-1
