>Parable of the fox and the grapes

Earliest reference is in a russian anthology which refers to it as an "oriental fairy tale"

here are some stories from Panchatantra:

>The Monkey and the Crocodile

A monkey lived in a jamun tree by a river. One day, a crocodile swam up to the tree, and the monkey offered him some fruits.

They became friends, and the crocodile often visited to eat fruits and chat. The crocodile's wife, hearing about the delicious fruits, asked her husband to bring her some. When she tasted them, she thought they were so delicious that the monkey's heart must be even more so. She told her husband to invite the monkey home and kill him so she could eat his heart.

The crocodile, though reluctant, agreed. He invited the monkey to visit, offering to carry him across the river on his back. Midway across, the crocodile revealed his plan.

The quick-thinking monkey said, "Oh dear, I'd be happy to give you my heart, but I always leave it hanging in the tree for safekeeping. Let's go back so I can get it." The crocodile, believing this, swam back. As soon as they reached the shore, the monkey leaped to safety in his tree, having outwitted the crocodile.

>The Blue Jackal

A hungry jackal wandered into a city looking for food. Chased by dogs, he hid in a vat of blue dye. When he emerged, he was completely blue. The forest animals, never having seen such a creature, assumed he was divine and made him their king.

The jackal enjoyed his new status, but kept other jackals away, fearing they would expose him. He appointed lions, tigers, and wolves as his ministers. One day, hearing other jackals howl, he couldn't resist joining in. The animals realized they'd been tricked and attacked him, teaching a lesson about the dangers of deception and pride.

>The Turtle and the Two Geese

A turtle lived in a lake that was drying up. His geese friends offered to fly him to a new lake by having him bite onto a stick they would carry in their beaks. They warned him not to open his mouth during the journey.

As they flew over a town, people looked up in amazement at the sight. One person wondered aloud who had come up with such a clever idea. Unable to resist boasting, the turtle opened his mouth to claim credit, immediately falling to his death. This story teaches the importance of heeding good advice and the dangers of vanity.

>The Lion and the Rabbit

A tyrannical lion demanded that the forest animals send him one animal each day as food, or he would kill many. When it was the rabbit's turn, he devised a plan. He arrived late, telling the lion he was delayed because another lion had claimed to be king and had tried to eat him.

The enraged lion demanded to be shown this impostor. The clever rabbit led him to a deep well. When the lion looked in, he saw his own reflection and, thinking it was the other lion, jumped in to fight it, thus drowning. The rabbit's wit saved all the animals, demonstrating how intelligence can overcome brute strength.

>The Crow and the Serpent

A crow couple lived in a tree, but a serpent in a hollow at the base of the tree kept eating their babies. Distraught, the crow sought advice from a jackal friend. The jackal suggested dropping something valuable belonging to the king near the serpent's hole.

The crow stole a gold necklace from the queen while she was bathing and dropped it into the serpent's hole. When the king's men searched for the necklace, they found the serpent and killed it, freeing the crows from future threat. This tale shows the power of intelligent planning to overcome stronger adversaries.
>>
>The Tiger and the Traveler

A traveler in a forest came upon a tiger trapped in a cage. The tiger begged to be freed, promising not to eat the man. Once released, however, the tiger prepared to eat the traveler, claiming he was too hungry to keep his promise.

The traveler proposed asking three others to judge if this was fair. A tree and an old bull both sided with the tiger, saying the world was unfair. Finally, they met a jackal who asked for a demonstration of how the tiger had been trapped. When the tiger re-entered the cage, the jackal told the man to lock it and walk away, saving the traveler's life. This story warns against naivety and demonstrates the value of wisdom.

>The Lion Makers

Four Brahmin friends, each skilled in a different area of knowledge, were traveling. They came across the bones of a lion and decided to test their skills. The first used his knowledge to assemble the skeleton, the second covered it with flesh and skin, and the third gave it life.

The fourth, who had common sense, warned them to stop, but they ignored him. He climbed a tree for safety. When the lion came to life, it immediately killed and ate the three Brahmins. This story teaches that knowledge without common sense can be dangerous.

Bang! the door flies open wide,
In he runs with hurried stride,
Tailor's in the room to nab
That wee thumb-sucking lad.
Snip! Snap! Snip! The deed is done,
Both his thumbs are quickly gone,
Gone! With the big, sharp shears!
How young Conrad wails and tears!

When his mother comes back home,
Conrad's face is full of gloom.
There he stands, poor little mite,
With no thumbs in sight.

btw gemini mogs the official translation, it's over

Here's for comparison

Bang! here goes the door ker-slam!
Whoop! the tailor lands ker-blam!
Waves his shears, the heartless grub,
and calls for Dawmen-lutscher-bub.
Claps his weapon to the thumb,
Snips it square as head of grum,
While that lad his tongue unfurled
And fired a yell heard 'round the world.
Who can tell mother's sorrow
When she saw her boy the morrow!
There he stood all steeped in shame,
And not a thumbkin to his name.

In France most of the parables we learn are from La Fontaine
I was shocked to learn that he didn't actually come up with all those parables, such as the turtle and the hare, because it was always presented to us in school as "les fables de La Fontaine"
