Their cities look like shit, why are japs so rich yet so unable to build decent architecture?
>>200156956>yet so unable to build decent architecture?Completely unnecessary and their cities are functional than those beautiful european cities, tokyo is best city i have visited and i been around europe a lot.
land reform and real estate development
>>200156956No use when the next typhoon or nuke will flatten the neighborhood
>>200156956real estate boom is what made them rich in the first place.

In relative terms, Japan has been one step ahead of the rest of Asia since the shogunate and perhaps even before in terms of development (bar the developed parts of China). They already had electricity and sewers in first pic when no one else in Asia did.
Lots of educated people, I guess
>>200156927High savings rate, access to US market, investment concentrated in manufacturing
>>200156927japan was already developed
1. Centralized rule2. They saw the need for it right awayCompare to China where it took the Qing decades after the first opium war to admit they couldn't shut out the West and keep living in medieval times anymore, only for the provincial governors to either ignore them or try to hoard power for themselves
>>200156927what do you? quickly? are you talking about the picture? because we were already developed back in late 1800s by that era standards
>>200156956What are they supposed to do? Traditional Japanese architecture is made from wood and isn't adaptable for modern offices and apartments.
>>200158790It could still be mimicked using different construction materials
Japanese outside Tokyo actually live in pretty big house. Go see what the average Japanese house looks like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftbXPDV7nmwhttps://www.instagram.com/cheaphousesjapan/

>>200156927American grants that gave them a lot of industry + centralised competent rule + real estate boom

>>200156927Even in the Tolugawa era they had a strong central government, homogenous population, large cities, and established merchant class that fostered high literacy rates for a pre-indistrial society. Combine that with smart, strong leadership during the Meiji era and imported Western technical experts and it makes sense they outpaced the rest of Asia in the 19th century.
Nationalism was created in Japan at the end of the Edo period.Considering that this period coincides with the American Civil War, Japan's start as a modern nation was by no means late. That would be later than Britain and France, but at the same time as Germany, Italy and the USA.
>>200162237The Edo period was not a centralized system, but a decentralized system. The shogunate did not interfere in the internal affairs of each domain. In addition, both the shogunate and each domain recognized the autonomy of each village to a large extent.
>>200158790it is though
>>200162098interesting
>>200156927simply put, Japanese people are intelligent and also very hard workers. They did in like 50 years what white people took 500 to do. White people only have the advantage because we are always looking for better ways to do things while Japanese just want to perfect the current way and not change it
>>200156927The most likely reason was that they saw Asian countries becoming colonies one after another. This fear was the catalyst for Japan's overthrow of the shogunate and clan system and its transformation into a civilized society.
