Country is run by the military, and has a lot of oil money they don't know how to spend. The money does get used to build infrastructure, there is just so much the military also spends a lot.

>>200161386Every country on our borders is either unstable or hostile, Libya, Niger and Mali are unstable and/or warzones, Western Sahara is a shit show, Morocco is hostile, Mauritania and Tunisia are politically stable but still militarily incapable of guarding their borders so we have to foot the bill there too. It's a tough neighborhood to exist in, transnational terrorism, human, weapon and drug trafficking, active warzones, etc. There's also some leftover trauma from the 90s where there was a civil war against Islamic insurgents, so the feeling of threat and the necessity of defending yourself is still there. That being said the spending is probably more than what it should be, but we're always going to spend a lot on defense because no one else is going to defend our borders for us.
