In Germany we have a certain culinary tradition. Parents make sure to feed their child Pumpernickel regularly throughout their childhood, so they know what sadness tastes like. This is believed to make the child tougher and better prepared for the hardships of life. Once they are adults, most Germans choose to never eat Pumpernickel ever again.

As a child I made the ultimate mistake by thinking that it was some sort of chocolate bread.
It's even worse when you expect sweet.

I think we intentionally did that to trick the children. I am sorry you had to go through this.

Seems like you took part in the Pumpernickel humiliation ritual like a proper German child then.

Funny how you can always tell which stories come from Protestant Germany and which ones come from Catholic Germany.

What is pumpernickel's original form? There is pumpernickel-flavor bread that mostly tastes like caraway seed. There is this weird dry brick thing. Then there is the circular cylinder in a can. Then there is pumpernickel at the bakery which could be any shape, any texture, any ingredient, as long as the bread is dark brown and has some caraway.

Might be true, but that name probably has it roots in some midieval westphalian (?) dialect.

I think pumpernickel tastes good and I want to try making it myself
The one I had was sour and weirdly a bit sweet
Also felt very healthy to eat

It actually is, you have to chew it for a while.
>>
>>201290630
I think I had it once maybe? It wasn't so bad if I remember right. I am whole wheat chad though so I don't concern myself with inferior breads

Pampernickel was THIS?

You've got to distinguish pumpernickel with US pumpernickel
In the USA pumpernickel refers to a standard bread made with wheat and some rye with a ton of additives to make the colour dark

Back then my mom basically enforced this and dark rye bread on me and my siblings because of it's nutrional value. Kinda worked desu. We all became healthy and tall and I still like to eat it to this day. Thanks mom!

Try them with cottage cheese, cucumbers, radish and/or other vegetables and herbs
>>

No it is actually from the region of Westphalia and not the french puppet state of Westphalia, which was actually just Eastphalia and nortern Hessen stitched together and did not include any westphalians.
>>
Pumpernickel is pretty tasty and moist though, far better than grey bread especially made from Dinkel.

You can just put toppings on something tasty you know
>>

You don't know how different flavours can complement each other?

'Fries roggebrood' is great. Especially if you leave the toppings to the Danish, they've got it down to a science.

I want that smoked ham one but with jalapenos instead of pickled cucumbers
>>
>>201294289
It was a self inflicted injury.
I found leftovers from a dinner party.
My first clue should have been it's adjacency to the vegetable tray.

If you dont eat Pumpernickel and love it, your basically not white at all!
