In Poland on top of having a fleet of ancient cars (one of the oldest by average age in Europe) that is massive - more cars per capita than Germany - we haven't done much in regards to what people use to warm their homes. While the city proper usually doesn't have that problem - most polish cities have municipal heating/electricity generation in small towns and rural areas the situation is literally India-tier, there are millions of households still using wood and sometimes even coal for their central heating boilers. And when there's no wind the air quality in the colder months is atrocious, it's impossible to drive through a rural town or village without turning on recirculation
