I didn't really have high expectations but how did they fuck up this bad? I thought Nigeria was some kind of success story as far as African countries are concerned

Their GDP only grew as oil prices did, after oil prices fell their economy went tits up and then you had other problems like oil theft and organized crime on top of that. It's essentially a quasi-failed state.
Big oil are now desperately trying to sell their assets in Nigeria to build offshore rigs because inland oil infastructure is being dismantled and as much as 1/4 of all oil produced in Nigeria is stolen by random mbongo gangs.

isnt this a currency problem? Use PPP

Yeah it's another example of how the thirdie countries are NOT going to automatically ascend like people thought they would 10+ years ago. It's like the BRICS meme, it isn't going to happen at a timescale people think it will. Nobody is going to move to firstie status for a long time.

Commodities markets busted that year and haven't ever really recovered. All sorts of previously middle income resource extractor shitholes that were projected to keep raking in money until they became first world suddenly stagnated or even declined (e.g. Brazil)

Yeah turns out basing your entire economy on plucking cocoa beans might not be a great bet
