I've started making anki cards for tae kim I think I've already memorised how to conjugate u-verbs but I don't know how I'll memorise u-verbs which have an e/i vowel
>>204050263I know the term "u-verbs" refers to regular verbs that end with an う as in 買う(kau), 会う(au), 言う(iu) etc. but what do you mean by u-verbs which have an e/i vowel?
>>204050864Somehow u-verbs in many resources means godan verbs, and e/i vowel probably refers to ichidan verbs and their second to last kana being う段 or い段. Often resources for gaijins just use romaji for these things, because those are genuinely more handy when it comes to explaining how those conjugate in cases where the last kana has its vowel change into another.
>>204048627>>farmer-cum-fluent>え?I will assume you are not just being silly. Cum is Latin for "with," so I presume "farmer and also fluent English speaker," though it would have been clearer with more hyphens. Feels like how Japanese uses 兼. If you were just being silly and already knew about cum feel free to point and laugh at me.

Please identify whose post it is.>Just wondering if it wasn't for the 矛盾 and maybe even ぬるっと, would you still feel that way?I can't say for sure. It's hard to put my finger on, but the author's wording is entirely a bit odd in a good way. For example, the phrase "激しく辛いという状況" is not wrong at all, but for some reason it still makes me chuckle considering it was written by a native Japanese speaker.>>it is very cringe to ponder on someone's personality based on her message alone>You didn't really talk about her personality, just the impression you got from her message, no?Yes, something like that I guess.>>204052017I looked up the word in a dictionary and used it.>actor-cum-musician>名>俳優兼ミュージシャンhttps://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=cum

>>204055106A common phrase where an English speaker would encounter the Latin word "cum" is "magna cum laude" "(graduated) with great honors," but I have heard it used in other contexts, just rarely. Pronounced, perhaps ironically enough, as /ku:m/ i.e. "coom."It's difficult to use online without someone snickering, obviously.

This may be a stupid question, but is it normal to use your own name to refer to yourself instead of using "I" in English speaking countries? (pic related)For your information, pic related is a snapshot taken from one scene in Donkey Kong Country 3.The name of the machine wearing sunglasses is "Kaos" and he keeps using his own name over the first-person pronoun (I mean, "I"), which is why I'm asking this.

Or the character is a Hulk Speaking primitive. Or the character could be just a Cloudcuckoolander with a weird speech mannerism. An egotistical villain will especially refer to himself in this fashion if he has a cool or impressive-sounding name or title. Sometimes a character with Acquired Situational Narcissism will temporarily become a Third-Person Person as a sign of his suddenly expanded ego. There are examples of this trope used in the Japanese way, though, such as Elmo from Sesame Street

Only recently it seems to be improving, reflecting feedback from native English speakers (I can't understand why such an essential thing had not been done for this long. This is by no means my personal opinion. Mark Petersen, a literature professor at Meiji University, has written a series of books that illustrate, with thorough and sharpshooting examples, how inaccurate and misleading the English textbooks used in Japan as lately as the 2010s were). We had been so badly conditioned by English classes that it would not be an exaggeration to say that we would be better off if we had never attended classes at all. However, it is totally wrong to think that the only way to learn things is through public education, and we should learn what we want to learn ourselves.I also think it is a myth that "English is an easy language".

It's usually obvious from context which words are names - like, 99% of time it is a person who speaks or walks.Japanese has all these subject and topic markers が/は that make this a bit easier.>In Chinese I think they mark thisIn hk newspapers, books and official documents do mark names with underline but as far as I know this is not practiced in mainland. Causal writing and online we don't use these marks at all (imagine having to underline every names in your post lol).

I've been studying for 9 months. Is it just me or is ChatGPT pretty useful? I've noticed it has weakness with certain things, but sometimes I ask it what a particle is doing in a sentence, for instance, and have an "aha" moment. But I see people online saying it's really bad to use it cause it makes things up, and as a learner it's difficult to discern that. Just now I saw も in a sentence and it didn't make sense to me. I thought it had a different meaning than the も particle that I already know, but ChatGPT explained it to me in a way that I was able to get it. But this is obviously super basic grammar, I have no idea how it performs for more advanced stuff cause I'm not at that level yet.

So I suck at kanji... I dont know if Im retarded or something, but I just cant memorize them. No matter how many anki cards I memorize I still look at simplest kanji like its some kind of math equation. Should I just ignore them for now?
>>204166008>But I see people online saying it's really bad to use it cause it makes things up, and as a learner it's difficult to discern that. Thats true, its just how LLMs work sadly. Its better to ask things here or just do a google search.

>>204179710Keep in mind that kanji are not meaningless sets of lines or curves, but they are embedded in words or sentences that have meaning. The more you encounter sentences where those kanji are used in various ways, the more you'll get familiar with them in an organic way.
