>How far from the front were you?
Farthest East I got was Kolomak, Kharkiv Oblast. Kryvih Rih was perhaps were I was closest to the Dnepr front.

>Did you have any runins with the UKR millitary?
Too many to count. I got arrested for taking pics of random ass shit (I'm a tourist after all) shortly after entering Kharkiv Oblast. I originally intended to cycle to Kharkiv. After four hours of interrogation, luggage and phone search and check-ups with the higher-ups at the local police station, the UKR dudes eventually let me go. However, they told me there'd be lots of military checkpoints up ahead on the way to Kharkiv and I'd likely get questioned again. So I decided to turn back.
Another time I got spotted sleeping in an open field (pic related) by military dudes patroling the area with drones, somewhere in Chernihiv Oblast. Military van came up on me in the middle of the night, a bunch of soldiers got out and aimed their rifles at me while I was blinded by the car's front lights. Was scared shitless. Felt like I was about to be executed but they turned out to be Ukrainians and not Russian saboteurs. Local police dudes eventually joined. Everybody was quite amused and confused once they realized I was cycling. They mistook my bike for a motorcycle in the dark.
Apart from that lots of smaller stuff; some questioning at military checkpoints, recruiters asking for my documents, village people calling the police on me etc.

>Were you in danger at any point?
Got into a drone attack targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure somewhere in Mykolaiv Oblast. Slept under a bus stop. Turned out the Ukrainians had a position close by, trying to shoot down the drones. Russia kept sending waves of drones up until the early morning. Didn't get a lot of sleep that night.
https://files.catbox.moe/nryaia.mp4
Small sound recording of the event, might have to turn up the volume.

>Was there anything that suprised you?
Hm. People calling the police on me was kinda odd but it is a country at war after all. There's probably more saboteurs and collaborators operating on Ukrainian soil than you or I can imagine.
Paranoia is one reason for random people calling the police on me; another one is that there appears to be a bounty of sorts for reporting draft dodgers. At least that's what a drunk dude in a hostel in Poltava told me. I'm inclined to believe it. I'm at a perfect age for military service.
Also, Ukrainian is, surprisingly enough, the dominant language even in places as far East as Poltava. Russian is generally understood by the population for obvious reasons but not nearly everyone speaks it (or wants to speak it). Moldova might be more russified than Ukraine.

>Where did you sleep?
Outside and in guesthouses, motels, hotels.

>How was it?
I can't really recommend March for touring Ukraine. It's a cold and messy season, and some roads will inevitably turn into mud during rasputitsa. Roads conditions are generally abysmal, but that's part of Ukraine's charme. It's a lovely country. Very cheap too.

>>204398293
>get any punctures?
Nope.
>avg distance per day?
Really can't say. I could calculate it but I'm a lazy cunt. In generally, on bike trips I average around 150km each day in good conditions. In Ukraine it was less than that, due to poor weather, little daily sunlight and poor road conditions.

That might be part of it but it's not the main reason. I already incelcycled to Ukraine's Black Sea coast last year. Likely would have gone there regardless of the war.
I incelcollect first-level administrative subdivisions; for Ukraine that's the oblasts, for Switzerland the cantons, for Estonia the maakonds etc. Pic related is my current collection. I want to complete all of Europe by bicycle at some point.

>You are like the boss-incel
Thank you, but an incel nonetheless.

>Does this include places you've visited by car/train/etc?
It does but the only regions on my map right now that I didn't do by bicycle are

- the two provinces in Turkey
- the Balearic islands
- Northern Scotland
- Dublin
- two regions in Finland

Everywhere else I cycled, to varying degrees.

>Do you carry a lot less when in warmer countries?
Absolutely. Winter cycling is entirely different beast.

>Can you give a rundown on your operating costs?
Heavily depends on the country. Maybe ten Euros worth of junkfood and fluids each day on average. I try to avoid accomodation in expensive countries as long as my powerbanks and weather permit. Longest I've gone without getting a room was fifteen days if I recall correctly.

>Is there any information specific to the balkan region that is interesting?
Not particularly. It's a very nice region for cycling, one of my favorites in Europe. Roads are good, prices are low, people are friendly, low population density and there's some stunning nature to be experienced. I'd avoid the Croatian coast though; it's scenic but extremely busy. The interior is a lot coomfier. Summers can be extremely hot.

>And why no aerobars?
Don't like them.

>>204398918

Last time I brought a tent was in 2019. Too much of a hassle with few upsides. I'd only carry a tent in the mosquito-dense areas and seasons of Scandivia, Russia and the Baltic states.

They're absolutely essential for riding on ice but apart from that one niche they just drag you down everywhere else. I understand Winter road conditions in Scandinavia might warrant them though. I tried cycling in Scandinavia in the middle of winter once and turned back home early after finding out that roads aren't maintained the same way up there as in continental Europe in the winter. Studs provide maximum security, but I'm not sure if it's worth or necessary around here.
I've been considering the Continental Winter Premium II tires, which are winter tires without studs. Might be a good compromise.

>>204399332
>you've been rawdogging with just a sleeping bag??
And a sleeping pad, yes.
>What happens if you're caught in the rain?
Check the weather forecast and find a sleeping spot with a roof of sorts if necessary.
>Do you sleep at campgrounds or do you settle down anywhere?
Nope.
>What criteria do you look for when scouting an area? Can you do it in urban areas?
Cemeteries are my go-to option for most of Europe. Almost nobody ever goes to a cemetery at night. Sometimes they also come with buildings with small roofs, like chapels, or rooms for funerals, or tool sheds. I've incelslept in well over one hundred cemeteries.
Churches can also be a good option in some countries. Other good places are observation towers, bird-watching towers or hiking shelters. Playgrounds may have structures with a roof. In Scandinavia there's a lot of public shelters for barbecues, called vindskydd in Swedish for instance. Bus stops are last resort options if it rains. In good weather I also frequently sleep in open fields or on farm or forest tracks.
I prefer places far from population centers and strongly avoid urban areas.

I dunno but it's a lot cheaper than eating out, and I'm not going to carry ten pounds of oats and beans with me. I prefer stuff from the bakery aisle in supermarkets. I also often eat chips, sometimes candy.

>Why don't you have a frame bag? It's free aero gainz
Not needed, cumbersome and would get in the way with the bottles. It's a bikepacking meme.

>I started planning a route in central bulgaria on googly earth and damn was it time consuming (but worth it desu) If you have any records of your routes, can you share some of the more scenic ones?
Here's a map of almost all the bike trips I've done. Still needs a little work, need to add ferry and train rides and shit, and it's missing a couple of tracks in the Baltic countries and Britain. Pretty complete apart from that.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/1/edit?mid=1ZQ-EV5zsW3rjzD9e3PaiRsiSBwC_bMw

Here's an old map of mine which is no longer being updated. Googlemymaps is terribly limited compared to OSM so I've been migrating. It includes almost all the places I slept at though. Might be interesting.

Scenic stuff in the Balkans include the Carpathians (Transalpina!), Croatian Velebit, pretty much the Southern two thirds of Bosnia (great country), Montenegro as a whole, Transylvania and the mountains of Albania and Greece. It would probably easier to list the shitty parts of the Balkans: Vojvodina and Northeastern Croatia are comfy but just flat. Wallachia is very bad. Following the Danube is easy but incredibly boring outside of the Iron Gates NP. Most of Kosovo pales compared to its neighbors. Most of Albania's high-traffic coastal roads are to be avoided, except for the riviera in the South.

Yeah. It's a small country. Been there twice. Have to return for Ida-Viru maakond though. I can't really blame them. There is a blanket photography ban in oblasts bordering Russia. In non-border oblasts, taking pictures of settlements and anything related to the infrastructre of the country (bridges, train stations, power stations, railways etc.) is not permitted. Couldn't possibly have known that.

It's still funny to me the police in Kharkiv Oblast seriously considered the possibility I'm spying for Russia. They must have been thinking nobody could possibly be doing this just for shits and giggles. There had to be an ulterior motive.
When they searched through my phone they eventually stumbled upon monkey putin images. I think that's when they started to believe me.

I really appreciate these maps and tips.

You weren't kidding about avoiding urban areas, many of the cities I wanted to visit are off of the route. Is this a consequence of optimizing your route to hit all the districts efficiently, or do you actively avoid them?
Maybe its feminine, but seeing/hearing the people/culture and unique urban scenery is one of my biggest interests.
Will you ever return to previously covered areas for the fun of it, or is map painting your sole focus? I'd be interested in hearing your motivations
>>
>>204400350
We actually use a ton of salt, to the point that it's damaging to both the environment and cars. At least where I live. And they usually start salting as soon as it gets cold

>Is this a consequence of optimizing your route to hit all the districts efficiently, or do you actively avoid them?
Both. Navigating huge cities on a bicycle is just a pain in most parts of the world. Bucharest and London were probably the worst.
I don't really care about sights. I could have seen visited Stonehenge with an hour detour or so but I couldn't be arsed. I've seen enough European cities and towns that I also no longer care about historical city centers or medieval architecture.

>but seeing/hearing the people/culture
I honestly believe you're more likely to engage with people in rural than in urban areas. You stick out a lot more with a bicycle there.

>Will you ever return to previously covered areas for the fun of it
Map painting is my priority but I'll have to revisit a lot of regions again to get to uncharted territory. I also lack what I call "proof pics" for some regions. A proof pic is proof of me having been to a region. It includes the bike and, ideally, a stele or region border sign like pic related, Cahul District in Moldova. Pictures with the bike in front of signs of any towns or villages within a region work too, or famous landmarks (collisseum in Italy) of that region. Back when I stumbled upon the map ten years ago I was mostly just collecting for the lulz so I didn't take as many such pictures. But it has turned into a fully-fledged autism since.
A secondary goal of mine is connecting starting and ending points of previous trips with new trips, for map aesthetics. Kufstein in Austria or Annaberg-Buchholz in Germany are such "loose ends". I actually just got back from a trip starting in Eastern Poland and ending in Klagenfurt, Austria. I was mostly doing it for fun because the weather forecast was excellent, but I also connected the dots in Graz and Klagenfurt.

I also have an itch to try and cycle to Kharkiv again. Shouldn't have gotten myself cucked last time. That trip wouldn't get me any new regions though.

No offense but the Wallachian Plain is not exactly exciting.
>>
>>204401002
well yeah it's depressing. it's boring when i travel by train there
but what about the hilly upper wallachian counties?
also would you consider overall Romania to fit in the Balkans or in the Eastern Europe? or a mix of both? judging by your travels ofc

If you can't run for more than a few minutes you're just running too fast. If you can walk for an hour you can plod along for 15 minutes, and that's all you need to do a couple times a week until you can plod for 20-30 minutes, and then you can jog for 15 minutes, and then 20-30 minutes, etc.

>but what about the hilly upper wallachian counties?
The valleys leading up to the Carpathians can be quite nice but I've always associated Wallachia its plain. In German the term "Walachei" is actually used to refer to any remote area, bumfuck nowhere.

>also would you consider overall Romania to fit in the Balkans or in the Eastern Europe? or a mix of both? judging by your travels ofc
That's a difficult question. I first went there seven years ago. It was my first visit to a actual Eastern European country. Crossing the Hungarian border at Satu Mare felt like entering a different part of civilization. I definitely considered it Balkan back then.
Now I'm not so sure anymore. Romania has REALLY caught up in the past years. Your roads are now better than where I live. Barely any stray dogs in Transylvania anymore (Western Moldova can still be bad) and even the shepherd dogs that used to chase me hundreds of meters down the road seem to have gotten more chill.
Culturally Crisana, Banat, and Transylvania have very much a Central European vibe (I consider Poland, Hungary, Czechia and Slovakia as part of Central Europe). Wallachia, Dobrogea and Western Moldova feel firmly Eastern European but they're really not that similar to their Balkan neighbors either. Bulgaria for instance looks and feels a lot more gray and "post-Soviet" than Romania and it features Greek influences in its architecture and settlement structures, which Romania lacks entirely. Ceaucescu seems to have done his own little spin on establishing a socialist country, which it gives the country a fairly unique atmosphere. Maramures and Bucovina share distinct Carpathian vibes with neighboring Ukraine, not Balkan either.

>navigating huge cities on a bicycle is just a pain in most parts of the world
My nearby big city is detroit, which is infamously sparse (and not bad for bikes). It's the only big city i've biked so far, I guess i'll be in for a shock if I do visit yurop.
>I don't really care about sights
we have some very different axioms
> I've seen enough European cities and towns
I guess that makes sense. My surroundings have been highways and strip malls my whole life, anything will be novel for me, even your slums interest me (picrel)
>I honestly believe you're more likely to engage with people in rural than in urban areas
I defnitely agree, however, the sheer density of stuff in the cities is too alluring

Does your interest start and end with the map changing color, or do you have other reasons? Like a geoguessr connecting with the world by learning the minutiae of each country, or some abstract feeling of conquering your ancestral lands and whatnot.
Do you have any rivals with similar maps?

>>204400712
There's hardly a plan, I just noticed a few spots like sarajevo, ohrid, veliko tarnovo, and the black sea coast towns which all seemed pretty interesting.

>black sea coast towns
There's a few historic towns on Bulgaria's Black Sea like Nesebar but most of them are just generic holiday resorts.

>I guess i'll be in for a shock if I do visit yurop.
Nah. I've never ridden a bike in the US but I can't imagine Europe being worse overall.

>even your slums interest me (picrel)
Those are gypsy ghettos. Yeah there's a certain novelty factor. Luník IX, Stolipinovo and Shuto Orizari are some of most well-known ones. Lots of smaller designated gypsy areas all across the Balkans though. Hard not to stumble upon them by chance.

>Do you have any rivals with similar maps?
There's a semi-regular map thread on /trv/ but it's not a competition kinda thing. As far as I know nobody does what I do.

>Does your interest start and end with the map changing color, or do you have other reasons?
The map gives me clearly defined goals and gets me to places I normally wouldn't ever consider going to, which is pretty cool. But I also just really enjoy cycling, the sense of adventure and the feeling of accomplishment. I think it builds character.

>>204401528
It's from the Apuseni in Western Romania. Really scenic region. Romania is one of my favorite countries overall. But I'm a sucker for Eastern Europe and the Balkans.
>>
>>204401441
Interesting take. I asked you because I'm originally from the hilly region of Oltenia.
>In German the term "Walachei" is actually used to refer to any remote area, bumfuck nowhere.
I didn't know about this kek.

As a matter of facts yes the former A-H provinces feel different. Actually I found Ukraine (Galicia, Podolia, Odessa, Central Ukraine) to be the most similar and feel the most familiar to me in terms of nature, landscape and the general look of the cities and especially villages, beside Moldova. Other regions that come close are northeastern Serbia and the northern half of Bulgaria but even those feel a but different. For example Sofia resembles more Istanbul than Bucharest imo.
>Bulgaria for instance looks and feels a lot more gray
I wouldn't say so. It's a very sunny country. Maybe dusty and unkempt because.

For me Moldova and Wallachia feel both eastern and balkanic.

I think it's the commieblocks. Bulgaria's are overwhelmingly gray. Romania uses a lot more Mediterranean colors, shades of brown and orange.
The very first impression I got from Bulgaria was from the country's Northwest though, which is a notorious dump and gypsy haven.

different strokes different folks

Then again it also depends a lot on where you're cycling. France has a bunch of bike trails following canals. Very easy to cycle, no traffic, completely straight, no settlements inbetween - notoriously boring. Wide plains, river trails or endless forest roads (Sweden!) can be similarly dull. In Ukraine the roads are so bad they require a high level of concentration, all the time, which is stressful but hardly ever boring. Even when you're just riding across the open steppe.

My dad once encountered a bear while hiking the Carpathians. He crossed the entirety of the mountain range in stretches of three weeks over the course of several years, starting in Caransebes and ending in Nitra in Slovakia. Retezat, Bucegi, Fagaras, Rodna, Maramures, Calimani and Ceahlau are some of the Romanian ranges he crossed. I planned the trips for him since he's not got with his computers. I turned to cycling instead of hiking since I have cripple feet.

That being said, the Transfagarasan probably can't compare to the Transalpina. A motorcyclist who did both once told me the Transfagarasan is in worse condition, has way more traffic and has generally fewer open panoramas than the Transalpina,
