However, they told me there'd be lots of military checkpoints up ahead on the way to Kharkiv and I'd likely get questioned again. So I decided to turn back.Another time I got spotted sleeping in an open field (pic related) by military dudes patroling the area with drones, somewhere in Chernihiv Oblast. Military van came up on me in the middle of the night, a bunch of soldiers got out and aimed their rifles at me while I was blinded by the car's front lights. Was scared shitless. Felt like I was about to be executed but they turned out to be Ukrainians and not Russian saboteurs. Local police dudes eventually joined. Everybody was quite amused and confused once they realized I was cycling. They mistook my bike for a motorcycle in the dark.Apart from that lots of smaller stuff; some questioning at military checkpoints, recruiters asking for my documents, village people calling the police on me etc.

I first went there seven years ago. It was my first visit to a actual Eastern European country. Crossing the Hungarian border at Satu Mare felt like entering a different part of civilization. I definitely considered it Balkan back then.Now I'm not so sure anymore. Romania has REALLY caught up in the past years. Your roads are now better than where I live. Barely any stray dogs in Transylvania anymore (Western Moldova can still be bad) and even the shepherd dogs that used to chase me hundreds of meters down the road seem to have gotten more chill.Culturally Crisana, Banat, and Transylvania have very much a Central European vibe (I consider Poland, Hungary, Czechia and Slovakia as part of Central Europe). Wallachia, Dobrogea and Western Moldova feel firmly Eastern European but they're really not that similar to their Balkan neighbors either. Bulgaria for instance looks and feels a lot more gray and "post-Soviet" than Romania and it features Greek influences in its architecture and settlement structures, which Romania lacks entirely. Ceaucescu seems to have done his own little spin on establishing a socialist country, which it gives the country a fairly unique atmosphere. Maramures and Bucovina share distinct Carpathian vibes with neighboring Ukraine, not Balkan either.

Actually I found Ukraine (Galicia, Podolia, Odessa, Central Ukraine) to be the most similar and feel the most familiar to me in terms of nature, landscape and the general look of the cities and especially villages, beside Moldova. Other regions that come close are northeastern Serbia and the northern half of Bulgaria but even those feel a but different. Very easy to cycle, no traffic, completely straight, no settlements inbetween - notoriously boring. Wide plains, river trails or endless forest roads (Sweden!) can be similarly dull. In Ukraine the roads are so bad they require a high level of concentration, all the time, which is stressful but hardly ever boring. Even when you're just riding across the open steppe.
