What language was Edo period literature written in?Is it safe to say that all pre-Meiji literature was in a form more similar to Classical Japanese than modern Japanese?

>>204436828it's all on a continuum that's hard to break into clean partsopening of 冥途の飛脚:みをづくし 難波に咲くや この花の、里は三筋に 町の名も、佐渡と越後の 合の手を通ふ千鳥の 淡路町、亀屋の世継 忠兵衛it's written in a poetic meter where you need to be cognizant of the 5-7 rhythm used in 和歌the grammar is not particularly classical at first glance but also different from the modernlarger problem is proper nouns and vocabulary, which is different between different periods and needs to be specially looked up and understood in many casesin dialogue sections you see things like:「誰そ頼もふ忠兵衛宿にゐやるか」と「ヤアこれは/\甚内さま、忠兵衛は留守なればお下し物の御用ならば、私に仰せ聞けられませ、お茶持ておじや」とclassical helps understand much of the grammar but also not allthings like 持ておじや are casual expressions from the period you will have trouble finding in dictionaries and have to absorb through translation or some other meansand also readings of parts indicating they were written in 候文 like:『来月二日出の三度に金子三百両差上せ申すべく候ふ、九日十日両日の中その地亀屋忠兵衛方より、右三百両受取り、内々申し置き候ふ事ども埒明け申さるべく候ふ、則ち飛脚の受取証文この度上せ候ふ間、金子受取り次第この証文忠兵衛に渡し申さるべく候』which is another kind of advanced knowledgeopening of 心中天網島 again in poetic meter:女郎が情の 底深き、これかや恋の 大海を、かへもほされぬ 蜆川、思ひ/\の 思ひ歌。This grammar is more clearly classical than other playdialogue is again more period-likeアヽコレ伊丹々々といふて下さんすな。それで痛み入るわいな。you can't just start with Edo for any of this, there is no such
>>204437366Alright thanks for the reality check>things like 持ておじや are casual expressions from the period you will have trouble finding in dictionaries and have to absorb through translation or some other meansAre there annotated editions available? Or do most people use modernised texts?
>>204439148I just mean that finding the information will be more difficult than copy pasting into a dictionary持ておじや here is 持っておじゃ which is 持っておいで but it uses an old orthography that disguises itif you google "おじや" you're only going to find things about a rice soup おじや 雑炊 and be lostfirst you have to understand the historical orthography, then you can find things about おぢやる, おいである, likehttps://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/%E3%81%8A%E3%81%98%E3%82%83%E3%82%8B/which is where it comes frombut if you're having trouble even starting to do something like this, can't get your knife to catch and start cutting at all, you might have to start by looking for 現代語訳 of the text you're looking at and see how other people translate the 原文 into modern japanesefor example, this guy has a blog where he posts translations of a lot of old texts, and he is bretty good (I have used him to help check my interpretations of 万葉集 poems in the past many times)https://sanukiya.exblog.jp/25723215/there, you can find that he translates the line as>お茶をお持ちしなさい。which could help you draw the link between おじや/おじゃ and おいで or some other kind of honorific request verbbut in all cases it requires prior knowledgeyou can't go in completely bind

>>204431811Absolutely not. There is some overlap in the overall vocabulary but wanikani has way more uncommon words overall.Wanikanis aim is to teach you 音読み and 訓読み of Kanji. It uses vocabulary to reinforce those readings.Core Decks want to teach you common vocabulary words. It's aim is for you to memorize vocabulary that you will encounter often faster. They're completely different goals.Let me tell you from experience that doing something like Wanikani will yield very little tangible progress on actually understanding Japanese for most people. That is not to say there is no benefit from Wanikani or generally a Heisig method. They can really make Kanji stick for you. The question is how beneficial that is to you early on.My take is that this is the wrong thing to focus on for most learners. There is a tangible risk to lose momentum within the first 2 years of learning due to not making enough progress with understanding actual Japanese, which will make most of their progress in something like Wanikani borderline useless.

Did people historically create new words based on kanji reading mistakes?Like you have a kanji that has 2 different readings but over time people start using one reading in place of the other reading in certain words and suddenly people have invented a new word, maybe a verb or a noun

慣用音 is a phenomenon where the correct Chinese reading becomes corrupted by some means and this corrupted reading becomes entrenched as the correct reading by accustomationExtremely common example of 慣用音 is 立, りつ as in 起立, Which should properly be 立, りゅう as in 建立An easy way to uncover 慣用音 is through Chinese poetry, where the incorrect reading will break the rhyme scheme>軍氣橫大荒 戰酣日將入Military air spreads across the waste - battle reaches heated pitch as sun is soon to set>長風金鼓動 白霧鐵衣濕Long wind and golden drums both sound, as white dew and iron armor both grow moist>四起愁邊聲 南轅時佇立On all sides arise sad sounds of the frontier - turning carriage south, at times one comes to a stop>斷蓬孤自轉 寒雁飛相及Dying grasses solitary turn about, and late-year geese fly after one anotherWe see here that 湿, しつ and 立, りつ were originally meant to both rhyme with 入, にゅう and 及, きゅう

Any of you guys planning on taking the JLPT in December? What level? How long do you have to drive to get there? Are you confident about it?I plan to take N2. I think I'll at least be able to pass, but whether I get a good score or not I'm not sure. I'm lucky that I live in the Bay Area and they're conducting a JLPT test at SFSU. So, I hardly have to go anywhere. I think for lots of people if they want to take the test they're forced to go out of state.

>>204498870Its like half correct here. どう means how, in what way and する is to do. した is past conjugation of する.Sometimes LLMs just hallucinate and make up stuff, you can see that sometimes when you ask them the same question again and the answer is different.
>>204498870>>204499089Actually, this answer is perfectly useful to know what "どうした" means, but not knowing that "どう" and "した/する" are separable (or memorizing that "どうした" is an inseparable set phrase by mistake) might lead to confusion later with phrases like "どうですか" or "そうするね".
