Just had a culture shock moment. So I live in modern day (small town) suburban midwestern america, pretty bog-standard stuffMy stepfather (I live with my parents as a NEET) was selling furniture to a family. But then I see this family and I'm just completely flabbergasted. It's an older lady and her younger daughter, but their clothing was like, straight outta the wild west. Like picrel I shit you not, sans cowboy hats.I was like, wtf. Even rural attire these days isn't like, this 19th century.I half expected their car (we were lugging the furniture into it) to be a horse carriage or something, but it was a standard red van, so they're clearly not amish.Apparently they're something called mennonites (though when my stepfather told me, I misheard it as metaknights, lol). They value old 19th century traditions and are religious, but are more lenient on technology unlike amish.I was just, generally confused. Typically in where I am you don't expect someone in your area to casually show up like they just walked out of the wild west era. It's probably just an amerimutt thing (fellas in japan wear kimonos and whatnot from time to time, right?), but I was just generally out of my element. Then again, I don't get out much, so it's on me.

>>215817894nobody here sticks to the 19th century life stlye except some monks
>>215817894>Apparently they're something called mennonitesYou never heard of them until now? Wew
>>215818262Yup. I did know about amish, but I didn't know mennonites (I keep instinctually almost accidentally saying them as "metaknights", I don't know why) were a thing
>>215818299I haven't seen one in ages, but I recall they used to make good cheese and sausages and they avoid interacting with people outside of their community as much as possible.
Some articles keep tripping me up, I've seen the Cure Dolly videos and read about them in Tae Kim multiple times and they still feel pretty much random
>>215819034Which ones? Also I wouldn't suggest trying to mix up Cure Dolly and Tae Kim, their models for how the Japanese language works is fundamentally different (Cure Dolly better matches what actually happens and how the language is taught for natives while Tae Kim tries to turn the language into something easier to digest for westerns while taking shortcuts and arguably butchering how the language actually works). If Cure Dolly explanations aren't working for you or you feel they are insufficient, try Imabi (https://djtguide.github.io/grammar/imabi.html) or a native source like https://www.kokugobunpou.com/ .
>>215819217>Which ones?A lot really, whenever I feel like I have them down, they either don't appear where I'd expect them, or appear in other places meaning something completely different >If Cure Dolly explanations aren't working for you or you feel they are insufficientThey work great, while watching the video, then I can't recall any of it while actually listening/reading and kind of gloss over them and guess what the sentences mean based on context, I feel like there aren't enough examples when they're being explained in order to make them stick >try Imabi (https://djtguide.github.io/grammar/imabi.html) or a native source like https://www.kokugobunpou.com/ I'll give them a try, thanks

>>215821329Speaking of immersion, is there a reason Vocaloid never gets mentioned? There's transcriptions of every Vocaloid song imaginable and most lyrics I've seen are easy. It's music in japanese, sure the robotic voices are not the best, but as you mentioned most lyrics have fairly easy kanji and grammar, if there's something you don't understand just pull out the dictionary.
