>>215912340im pretty sure in youtube you can switch your language to your TL. the best option i remember from my inpooot days is just to make a separate account for inputting so your normal recommendations dont get mixed with stuff in your TL
>>215912340Switch your language in chrome/your web browserIt makes websites automatically switch to your selected language

Building rapport with language partners is hard. They've got no reason to care that youre trying to learn a different language so you can't develop the necessary relationship for fluid dialogue anyway. >>215927439Idk, ask them
I really wanted to drop either French or German because it's so slow learning two langs at once, but I can't bring myself to drop either one of them.I see myself using German more than French, but I'm much further with my French progress than German and it's so much easier that I could probably be fluent much faster.Any time I think of dropping one or the other, I realize that I can't, so I'm stuck learning both hyper-slowly.It's fine except it sucks during these times where I now have to work 2 hours to buy the same thing that cost me 1 hour of work only 3 or 4 years ago. Fucking shit man. I'm tired.

>>215927468I'd just focus on French but do a little German on the side. French can't take you that long if you're a native Portuguese speaker. Switch things around once you're fluent
>>215927468Take the hobby pill.
>>215916606They're considered "easy" but it's relative to other languages, like nightmare mode languages like Japanese. Make no mistake, learning a scandi lang will still take years of your life, there are no freebies. If you want something "extra" to learn on the side that still counts as a language, try Toki Pona.
>>215930544 Learning toki pona gives you gender dysphoria
>>215919102If you read the replies to my post you will see that I acknowledged that I don't have experience with languages like Arabic or Mandarin where I would imagine CI would come with severe limitations due to the unique writing systems. Nonetheless, it should be something incorporated into everyone's learning program even if it's not the exclusive method someone uses to learn the language and for most people it'll be sufficient.
>>215931333ALG gooners cope with this by claiming they don't have to learn how to read or writeIn the mandarin learning community there is a sizeable number of these people They don't learn characters at all Usually they give up pretty quick tho
>>215931682And there’s a bunch of niggas in the mandarin community who will study 3,000 characters individually without learning to read (reading is comprehensible input)
>>215930220What do you mean?
>>215930220yeah I don't care about the practicality or even speaking fluently anymore, I'm only here for enjoyment learning to comprehend. I'd be playing video games otherwise
>>215931682Well I definitely don't endorse that sort of retarded cope. I would be curious to know if there have been attempts to modify the CI system to suit those sorts of languages. As the other anon said, reading is input, and I suppose it'd just be a matter of finding ways to effectively introduce a learner to the writing system through texts suitable to their level (though obviously a more complicated process than it would be if you were teaching a western language using the Latin alphabet or even something like Cyrillic)
>>215931902I mean: treat language learning like a hobby, an activity done for the sake of enjoyment. When you shift your focus to enjoyment in the moment, you tend to get more engaged and you tend to do more hours per day anyway, so it's a win-win.
>>215931858Nobody does that tho
>>215931214I don't get why trannies are attracted to the company, because it is just cultural appropriation and infantilisation of cultures the creator either knowingly or unconsciously deemed stupid. It's literally just a fake Tok Pisin. The creator explicitly went out of their way to make a "simple" language and based it upon a Pacific islander language. Is that based or cringe?
>>215931333Arabic immersion is quite easy. You just go to morning prayers with your habibi, then all the other subsequent prayers. Always prayer with the Muslim prayer channels on the TV.

>>215932853thank you Mei Ling
>>215932225This is good advice, and I do try to do that, but how do you suppress the part of your brain that just wants to reach the goal of fluency? I'm enjoying the process, especially since I dropped anki for French and just watch series now, but I'm also enjoying German even though I'm still on anki. It's cool that I can watch these anime and other series but damn I wish I started like 12 years ago.
bump
>>215933224I don't really think about fluency at all. It's just this distant abstract thing in my mind, like maybe getting to a point where my TL feels the same way English feels in my mind, that would be great but I have no expectation of when I will get there. If you have a lot of goals that depend on fluency, I can see how that could make you restless and feel like the language learning is an obstacle rather than the point. Maybe figure out the minimum level you actually need. Like if you want to live in France/Germany, you can do it way sooner.
>>215933224>goal of fluencyGrim. Your goal should only be to have a good time.
>>215934885>>215934975Do you guys not care about making progress?

>>215935394Confucius say matter not how slowly you go, as long as you don't stop.A happy man who worries not about progress, but about enjoying the process will have more mental fortitude to overcome the hardships that come with panicking over non tangible goals.

>>215947628The problem with Chinese media is that it's so incredibly state controlled and curated, for ages now they've formed the idea that any kind of content creation has to be patriotically focused and to somehow advance the idea of muh grorious nation. It's hard to create anything creative or interesting out of that notion, plus copyright enforcement doesn't exist in China so you don't really have bottom-up media production that can sustain itself (similar issue in the West now with the streaming profit model but still not as bad).I do think the younger generation in China is a bit more savvy and as a country they're headed towards more of an existential reckoning as growth slows and it becomes harder for the state to fix unemployment issues, which may encourage more individual cultural enterprise, but I don't think things will change anytime soon.
>>215948209>The problem with Chinese media is that it's so incredibly state controlled and curatedI used to believe this, and its obviously true to some degree, but I think its mostly overstated. They seem to be finding success with games like Genshin Impact and with their equivalent of anime (Donghua) and manga (manhua). They have tons of ancient traditions they can portray in interesting ways to global audiences like Japan does. >copyright enforcement>existential reckoning as growth slowsYea they gotta figure this out and get a handle on the corruption before more people trust them. I think they still have a while before growth really starts to slow down, but I don't see how they could possibly manage their population timebomb without major unrest.
>>215946928>how much of a clusterfuck Mandarin isHow so?
>>215948209>The problem with Chinese media is that it's so incredibly state controlled and curated, for ages now they've formed the idea that any kind of content creation has to be patriotically focused and to somehow advance the idea of muh grorious nation.Based, so no lefty political messaging, trannies, or woke. I like what Im hearing.>plus copyright enforcement doesn't exist in ChinaBAAAASED. So total freedom as opposed to whiny bogus copyright stuff hindering creative freedom (Pokemon company suing Palworld by saying no game can ride animals or through spheres)(various music artists suing each other because a few notes are similar)This sounds amazing. Maybe I do need to learn Mandarin
>>215948302>They seem to be finding success with games like Genshin Impact and with their equivalent of anime (Donghua) and manga (manhua)Fair, but a lot of this stuff seems quite derivative to me; that's the other problem with a lot of Chinese media, they're basically very good at copying other stuff but it lacks a lot of creative spark of its own, a lot of their stuff feels like someone said, yep, let's make a shonen ripoff, rather than making a story the creator feels personally attached to.>They have tons of ancient traditions they can portray in interesting ways to global audiences like Japan does. Yes and no imo. There is a lot of fantastic stuff in their history they can draw on, but imho a lot of the tradition got wiped out with retarded CCP shenanigans since they've been in power. There's still a broad relationship most Chinese have with folklore but it's really slimmed down.>I think they still have a while before growth really starts to slow downThis is true, the growth itself won't be an issue for a while, but there have been genuine issues with employment for a while now. I think a lot of their current crazy manufacturing drive is basically to keep things ticking over and keep people working, but if Trump is firm on tariffs and other countries follow suit (to make sure they don't become a dumping ground for all the stuff that was originally intended to go to America) there could be a huge slowdown there.Chinese people and the state haven't had to address hard times for so long now, I don't know how they're react to popular discontent.

>>215948505I agree that a lot of their media is too derivative and blatantly ripped off from someone else, but I get the impression they cover stuff specifically about Chinese culture and history very well. For example, I can imagine a Kingdom or Berserk-style manhua or donghua about the Three Kingdoms period that follows different characters. Something kinda like Game of Thrones. And most westerners know nothing about Chinese history so it would be a good way for China to change their global image. They could absolutely find some niche to make their own as long as they stay away from blatant CCP propaganda.
>>215948718>memorizing 3000 characters to reach 8th grade levelAlways get annoyed when people say this shit, you have to memorise the meaning of words in English or any other alphabetical language same as in Chinese. Just because there are more constituent parts of a character than there are letters in an alphabet it doesn't massively change the fact that you have to learn what any word in any language means before you can use it.

>>215948742Japan has already done so much on Journey to the West, which has probably the most exciting Chinese stuff going on.I don't really get why people jerk off Three Kingdoms stuff so much online, it's not that exciting, it's a very top down, imperial take on history.I'd really like to see a good take on Outlaws of the Marsh, I think it's criminally underutilised and actually has really cool subversive elements to the heroes which is incredibly rare in Chinese media, especially historical stuff.>They could absolutely find some niche to make their own as long as they stay away from blatant CCP propaganda. My problem isn't so much the blatant CCP propaganda, just the fact that media seems to be made with the intention of advancing the national cause.I remember years ago there used to be fucking tonnes of shows in China always about some plucky young Kung Fu master living in Shanghai at the time of the Japanese invasion and they would fight off thousands of puny weakling Japanese soldiers at once with both hands tied behind their back. They made fucking tonnes of these shows are they were all so BORING, they just wanted to rewrite history and pretend China hadn't been completely raped by the Japanese during the war.
>>215948800não posso. acabou-se.
>>215948867Also idk if you've studied Chinese but even if you come across a character you don't know you can often guess at the pronunciation because most characters follow rules where the element on the right or on top indicates what the pronunciation sounds like. You definitely can't figure out EXACTLY what a character sounds like from it, but of course in English there are also a lot of complicated words where you need to learn the pronunciation first.Alphabetical systems are probably better for guessing at pronunciation of a word you've never seen before, they're just more accurate, but it's all kind of redundant because guessing the pronunciation of a word you don't know the meaning of is useless, you're going to need to ask someone what it means in either language.

when your level is very low, is it better to make your own anki deck or use somebody else's 5k one?
>>215963670for an indo european language i would say making your own deck is better but if it's an asian language it's probably better to get a premade deck at least in the beginning before you make your own

Was talking with a tutor, who is really good with English. But I could see her limitations. I talked too fast for her at one point. As much as I struggle to learn my target language, all things considered I really am grateful English is my native language. Its easy to take for granted. Its closest to a universal language. Imagine being a Spaniard trying to learn English or something, its not just a hobby. Its incredibly useful to know English. My second language is really just for fun at the end of the day.Ironically learning more about my target language and the culture, is kinda just making me more proud to be American. Still interested in their culture and language, but I have a lot to be thankful for I havent really acknowledged before.
>>215963670Pre-made for top 5k words, then sentencing mining/handmade afterwards. Don't waste your time making a deck for something that already exists. Your time is better used for input.
>>215950068Make sure to set Minecraft to your target language too.
Can one realistically learn both Japanese and Chinese as an English speaker? I'm getting pretty okay at my Jap, and the PRC propagandists that post in this thread have piqued my interest in Chinese. I already know the kanji. How difficult can it be?
>>215967319I tried the most popular premade 5k deck on ankiweb for spanish and it sucked. The 1.5k deck for japanese everyone uses is better but I still wouldn't recommend finishing it before starting input.

>>215963819I’d argue the reverse because making your own helps it stick easier
>>215963670>>215964375You generally want to use a premade frequency deck to bruteforce your way through the top ~1000 or so words before making your own. >>215967777I used the 2k/6k for Japanese and started mining my own deck on the side after around 1-2k words. Its a good deck and I finished the whole thing but some of the words are totally unnecessary since its based on frequency in newspapers from the 90s I think. It didn't need words like 日ソ(Japanese-Soviet).

Speaking of learning Persian, obvsiouly the hardest part will be learning the script which will take forever, and it's not really possible to learn the language without knowing the scriptBUT, Tajik, which is just the Tajik name for Persian, is written in Cyrillic.
