I am about to finish unit 1 (of 10) of the TEFL course. So far, it's about CLASSROOM teaching methodologies. How can I teach English 1-on-1?I really want to teach my parents English to test my skill as a teacher.
>>217715773First, do they really want to learn English and have time to learn it/are not too tired after work or so? If you have students that don't really want to learn, then it's going to feel bad for both of you. But if they do want to learn, then I guess trying to introduce Latin script and some basic vocab and grammar would be the first good step
>>217715773Classroom teaching doesn't work though?
>>217715773If only you learned a language yourself so you knew what the actual steps are that your student needs to take... maybe you can help him refund your course after he buys it?
>>217715888I am retarded, I know I am not skilled enough to start a side business so I might just use this TEFL as a hobby thing and teach my parents English. My mother has always wanted to learn English.Maybe I might do private, cash-paid, low-price private lessons in-person if I really get good.I feel like an imposter, but yeah.I might learn a foreign language after this thing. Maybe a year from now?
>>217715926Hey serbbro
>>217715926I am not moving to Germany.I will not even visit France as a tourist.I enjoy Spanish music without caring about understanding the lyrics.I have more intrinsic motivation to learn Middle Eastern languages than those global languages, but again, it'll probably be at the expense of my uni studies. It's a very hard decision. I am banking on somehow stumbling upon a language that has both utility and is fun to learn. But only English fits that criteria... And I speak it.
>>217716086>I enjoy Spanish music without caring about understanding the lyrics. That is pretty smart, most people who dont speak English do that, they enjoy the music without actually understanding it, but once you go from no english to ESL, you get the language learning mind virus, where you believe that you need to understand the lyrics of a song/music genre to enjoy it. i like latino music but i would trade my fluency in Spanish for fluency in German, Russian, French, Japanese or Mandarinhttps://youtu.be/UWV41yEiGq0?si=cpM7ToKKMyIc721F
>>217716086I'm just saying if you learned a language by starting 5 years ago, even a useless one that you never used in real life, you would have still gained a valuable meta-skill of "how to learn a language". It'd be so easy to teach English because you'd know exactly what steps your student needs to take based on your own experience. Too bad English just spawned in your head one day and you have no clue how to help anyone else...
>>217716349I became fluent by watching the videos of this girlhttps://youtu.be/m5GtnMfG9WE?si=qayns_kzEl621zI1I just really liked her personality and the quality of her videos, and i also had a decent starting point from english lessons in school, i started translating every word i came across that i did not know its meaning, after that i think i started watching short form content (tik tok)then youtube and now im watching silence of the lambs with English subtitles (if i turn them off i will miss some dialogue). That is what i remember anyway, i was a teen and my memory is fuzzy It is simply hard to avoid american culture (unlike other languages, where you have to go out of your way to interact with them), i see how my cousins (who are toddlers) are getting bombarded with content made by Americans even at age 3 through youtube and tik tok brainrot. I wonder if future generations could be argued to be EFL simply because of that.
>tfw Jordie is fluent in more languages than I am
>>217716609English doesn't count
>>217716546we're probably going to see a mass die-off of languages in the next 100-200 years, many countries will become primarily English speaking, like how Latin and Arabic spread in the past
Doomer-posting (if I made any language mistakes in this post or have any suggestions, please let me know, it's my daily English practice as well)I don't want to learn German anymore. There isn't much native (easy and interesting) content and they speak English, and by the time I reach a level where I can use the language at work or to hang up with people or to consume more interesting things, I will have to live in Germany for at least a year. I don't even know if I want to immigrate to Germany. Maybe I'll go for six months or a year, save some money and then come back to Poland.I don't even know what criteria to use when choosing another language to learn. Maybe a language that has a wealth of content rooted in culture, providing opportunities to earn money and helping to get leid. I also have an observation: it is impossible to learn a language in the so-called meantime in the long run, especially at work or doing any task which is a bit complicated, it becomes background noise, you stop thinking while learning. Only during walks do audio courses work a little (or during rides but I broke my bike).>>217716829I doubt it. If anything, English as a universal language will replace local universal languages, and there may be a renaissance of niche dialects and dying languages.
>>217717172These are the main trading partners oyc, i think the languages that offer the most practical benefit to you would be european languages, because travelling to Japan or China would be more expensive than travelling to Germany due to the plane ticket cost and then again, this chart would only matter if you engage in international commerce, be it by being an importer, or exporter, having your own business or working for someone else. You said 6 months or a year, but what if you wish to extend that? you will most likely not move to Japan or China, but you could work in Germany for a number of years and then go back to your country and German would likely still be an asset in that scenario (paperwork, industries where English is not as widespread like it is in programming). It makes much less sense for someone like me to learn a language, because most of south america speaks spanish, while America and Canada speak english, and i could only visit Brazil, i would never be able to live or work there the way you can live and work anywhere in the EU.
>>217717350I am planning to go to Germany soon for six months or a year. But I won't be able to learn the language well enough to do anything on my own, integrate, etc. I will always be the foreigner you have to speak English to. So what's the point? I don't have my whole life ahead of me
the 2 phenotypes of Russian womenhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgQEBTG_glQ
>>217718021If you dont have an interest in a foreign culture and you dont see the practical benefit, language learning might not be for you, as you already speak English and most papers in tech and science are written in that language.
Modern English is a mongrel language, and I like it that way. It has a certain hybrid vigor.
>>217718324Well, I like learning about other cultures, I don't get bored listening to people talk about their customs or beliefs (that's why I asked about native content, learning German from translated non-German things seems lame to me), I like learning languages, and any language except maybe Japanese would probably be useful to some extent. It's just that learning the basics annoys me. It's humiliating and irritating in its own way.>>217718753It's like those clever mutts who always find a way to get food, and when they get hit by a car, they get up, dust themselves off, and keep going. >>217707639Just finished book series related auf Deutsch, I'm genuinely amazed I got through the whole series in German and only needed to use a dictionary a handful of times to look up words.Highly recommend to fellow German learners, the writing is simple enough for us GSLs to get but still fully intended for a native adult audience. Also the ending was less bittersweet and more straight bitter, but I liked that.
I think videos about language learning are useless because unless someone has extensively documented every immersion resource, book and course they have used, the most fundamental question in language learning remains: where do i go from here? what resource should i use next?

I will try to stop invading your space because honestly my plan for 2026 is i will just lazy maxx, meaning i will try to learn other things apart from language learning. It is just that i want to document everything extensively so that when someone asks me how i learned a language (no one will ask or they will ask to know what not to do) i can give a real answer instead of saying something ambiguous like 'just immerse in the language' or 'just study grammar'.I think that for many people, learning their target language in and of itself feels complete, for me i really want to have souvenirs of my TLs and use a pen to answer a physical book.I need to learn employable skills
