日本語と英語の大きな違いは有生性に敏感であるかどうかという点である。日本語は有生性に敏感な言語で英語は有生性よりも数に敏感な言語と言える。有生性に関して日本語に顕著なのは「存在」を表す「いる」と「ある」の区別であるが、それ以外にも多く有生性の違いで日英の違いが現れているものがたくさんある。最近、考えている違いに英語の前置詞 with がある。with は辞書では「同居」や「所有」や「道具」を表す前置詞として説明しているが基本は A with B とAと Bの togatherness を表してるだけで、それが文の中で「同居」とか「所有」という意味に変わるだけのことである。しかし日本語は有生性に敏感な言語なので英語では同じ with を使っているのに日本語では同じ表現で表すことができなくなっているのである
It's easier to think of it as less "plural", and more "non-singular". It's a quirk with how English deals with numbers. The only number that takes singular marking is "one", because if you think about it, that's the definition of what "singular" means.redditからだけど
